October Arden writes emotionally raw queer stories that live somewhere between literary fiction and romance. Their work explores fluid identities, found families, co-dependent devotion, and complicated love—often through the lens of characters who are chronically ill, neurodivergent, or quietly self-destructive. These are stories for anyone who's ever felt unwanted or unseen, where even the most damaged hearts can find a home.

October loves hearing from readers, so feel free to reach out, ask questions, or suggest what you'd like to see next. You can also join the newsletter to stay in touch—and as a thank you, you'll receive a free copy of Starting with Cake, a quietly unhinged neurodivergent love story full of snack cakes, janitor uniforms, and the kind of care that sneaks up on you. I struggled big time with this story. I got this book as a freebie with the promise of an honest review, and I'm stuck.

The take on the omegaverse genre with a huge difference. Each character is in one instance loveable and the in another instance hard to like. The selfishness of each character , with possible the exception of Eli the dominant alpga is staggering. There is so much evidence of behaviour that borders on abuse that there where many a time I felt like stopping. However i made it to the end.

How do i score, I have two options
- 2 stars, well written but I did not like it did not like the characters what it was saying or
- 4 stars, well crafted storytelling, hard to read book as it covers so much hard topics. Abuse, discrimination, confused relationships, illness, disability, Hope, how one positive solution can impact negatively in another. Miscommunication, self sacrifice and so on and so on. I end up opting for a 3 star fir the storytelling, as I do think it was very clever. But it has not left me happy at the end, confused and relieved its over.

Brilliant, thought-provoking, chaotic, emotional and sexy to the extreme; a unique omegaverse (non-shifter, no mpreg), just modified, stressed humans surviving and shining through a pheromone-based world, conscious of their needs, dealing with their desires in humane and thoughtful fashion. MM+M, we have lovely Nathaniel, a Beta and the tititular Zero, who is unable to sense, or produce, the pheremones that abound and rule this very contemporary society, who is happily (thoroughly) married to masculine, handsome Eli, doctor and Alpha Dominant, gentle but possessed of the strongest pheromones possible; Samuel is a rare Continuous Omega, in constant high Heat, vulnerable, abused, requiring constant monitoring, care, medical suppressants, a depressed and almost manic tragedy in the making. On a late night ice cream run, Nate finds Sam practically dead on the sidewalk and takes heroic, selfless and invasive action to save him, thereby becoming his 'partner' medically, sexually and psychologically, as he can't arouse the heats but can soothe and suppress them. The support provided can't be ignored by stable, calm and nurturing Eli, and the continuous heats and necessary manipulations and couplings require the three men to form a new living arrangement, with help and consternation from their family members. A new and different 'found family' support structure, not without comedy, banter, some danger, and always spice. The complications, chaos of this pheromone-drenched world is relieved by the good humor, humanity, caring and conscious unconditional and conditional love of these strong characters, surviving trauma and somehow thriving. The writing is intense, hypnotic and sometimes stream-of-consciousness, the constant spice almost becomes blase as the plot evolves. Kudos to the author for conveying such an extraordinary, spicy, ultimately immersive story in such an inclusive manner.

Perfect Zero: A Breaking Free Alternative Omegaverse Story by October Arden presents a character driven fantasy romance that explores identity, belonging, resilience, and personal transformation within an imaginative alternative Omegaverse setting.

One of the novel's greatest strengths is its emphasis on character development. Rather than relying solely on familiar genre conventions, the story centers on personal growth, emotional conflict, and the pursuit of self determination, allowing readers to become invested in the protagonist's journey and evolving relationships.

The alternative Omegaverse setting provides an intriguing backdrop that expands opportunities for world building and social exploration. By examining established hierarchies, expectations, and personal freedom through a unique perspective, the novel creates space for meaningful character choices and evolving interpersonal dynamics.

Another notable strength is the emotional focus throughout the narrative. Themes of acceptance, trust, healing, and discovering one's own path are woven into the story, creating a balance between relationship development and larger questions surrounding identity and purpose.

The combination of fantasy elements, interpersonal conflict, and emotional storytelling results in a narrative that encourages readers to invest not only in the world itself but also in the characters' individual journeys as they navigate difficult choices and changing circumstances.

For readers who enjoy Omegaverse fiction, fantasy romance, emotionally driven character arcs, and stories centered on personal growth and self discovery, Perfect Zero offers an engaging reading experience with strong emotional appeal.

Completely unexpected in the best way

I can’t even explain the kind and strength of emotion this book has made me feel. I was 40% into this ARC and had already cried twice (and I’m not a crier). This is unlike anything I’ve read before—not even just in Omegaverse. The writing style is so unique and makes for deeply moving characters.

A/B/O, non-shifter in a very contemporary setting, but it does focus on hard themes. Our wonderful Samuel is a Continuous Omega, meaning he lives in a constant state of heat, which is a life-threatening and chronic illness. It is treated as such and with immense tact and emotion. Samuel’s life is bleak (and nearly over) when Nathaniel (our MMC) finds him. This speaks to aspects of the human condition and trauma in a way that felt so safe yet overwhelmingly poignant.

It is MMM but the third M is hard fought and not immediate—even though he is Nathaniel’s husband (though it is not a cheating trope). There is a fantastic HEA.

And yes, there is spice. Lots of it. But some of that is treated as medically necessary, which might sound insane but this book totally pulls it off in a way I never would’ve thought possible.

I honestly picked this up because the blurb was well written enough and I was in the mood for Omegaverse. Never did I expect to find a 5-star story.

If you can handle the triggers, please do yourself a favor and read this.

I can’t recommend this enough.

Read it.

Perfect Zero is an intense, character-focused story, that is not only emotionally complex but distinctly original and unconventional take on the usual omegaverse storylines, as it leans more into biology, psychology, and care than typical genre expectations.

What stands out immediately is the concept, Nathaniel’s complete absence of pheromonal response set against a world ruled by it creates a fascinating contrast. His role as a “calm in the storm” feels central, especially when paired with Samuel, whose condition is intense, relentless, and deeply affecting. Their connection is unusual from the start, shaped as much by necessity as by emotion, and that tension carries throughout the story.

The relationship dynamics are layered, particularly with Eli’s presence adding stability and warmth. Rather than feeling like a simple extension of the romance, the trio’s bond develops through trust, adaptation, and shared responsibility, which gives it a more grounded and thoughtful edge.

The book doesn’t shy away from heavier themes such as control, autonomy & trauma but balances them with moments of humour, care, and genuine tenderness. The world itself feels immersive, with its pheromone-driven society adding constant pressure to the characters’ choices and relationships. Highly recomend

Same characters, different story

This book is based on a really interesting idea, that of taking the same characters from a previous book (The Care of Broken Things) and writing an alternate world version of their story. I liked the original book and this one is equally interesting. In the original story Samuel was in a physical prison whereas in this one the prison is Samuel’s own body. I don’t know of any other book that has had a Continuous, which is an omega who is constantly in Heat. The idea changes the story, but the attraction between Samuel, Nathaniel and Eli is still there.
It is a very different story and continues the unique story telling of October Arden that was also shown in her book The Needs of Human Pets. I appreciate the slow way this story develops the relationship between them and the secondary characters. Instead of insta love we get a medical emergency when Sam and Nathaniel meet with Nat only having a need to help Sam with his problem. The plot is driven by Sam’s medical issues and that gives us an alternate version of these same characters and it makes it really interesting.
You don’t need to have read the original story, but it does add an interesting twist.

Wow. I’ve never read an omegaverse like this before. It was such a painful take on excessive heats and how hard it is for omegas.

My heart broke for Samuel. The horrible things done to him as a child by those supposed to protect him was abhorrent. They destroyed his life in more ways than one.

Had it not been Nathaniel, who knows what would have happened to Samuel that fateful day. Nathaniel became more than just his savior, he became his reason for living.

At first I was afraid Eli would have to leave his husband in order for Nate and Samuel to be together, considering that Sam couldn’t stand alphas. But as I kept reading, it was clear we were going to have a poly relationship. One that was very unconventional but still beautiful.

Eli had to endure watching the love of his life love on someone else. But instead of losing his marbles, he was patient and supportive of Nate’s decision. He really was the best alpha.

I loved how much Samuel cared about Nathaniel and Hailey. Even at his own risk, he defended what was his with such ferocity that you would have thought he was the alpha.

Definitely an interesting read and one I enjoyed reading a lot.

So unlike any Omegaverse I've ever read!

I didn't read the original story this AU is based off of (and truly I don't understand why author's do this) but I really liked the concept so I picked it up and I'm glad I did.

We have a "Perfect Zero" which is a Beta that cannot detect or be affected by any pheromones; a Continuous Omega who is constantly in heat and thus attracting every Alpha around him good or bad; and a Dominant Alpha who plays largely a supporting role in the story until the end when all 3 men are together.

The beta and the alpha are happily married, but one night the beta goes out to get ice cream and stumbles on a hurting and abused omega. He does what he has to in order to help and the two become somewhat bonded. It's such a loving story full of care and understanding. The relationship between beta and alpha is sooooo beautiful and only becomes more so as the omega joins in.

Lots of hurt/comfort in a unique setting. I highly recommend for fans of Omegaverse who are looking for something different.

This was a complex romantic dynamic, with messy characters, fierce devotion and chaotic hormones, set in a world with unique omegaverse designations.
Nathaniel helps save a rare omega in crisis, and it erupts into a volatile co-dependency, unexpected feelings, and a dangerous mix of pheromones and possessiveness.
Beta Nathaniel is happily married to Alpha Eli, but now he's multitasking his life and love between his alpha and omega, and trapped between his loyalty and desires.
The worst part is Eli is fully supportive despite the volatility of his alpha genes triggering Samuel, and Samuel could literally die without Nathaniel by his side.
It's a story that explores vulnerability, trauma, and being out of control, while also having a supportive family network to anchor you, and a wholesome love to save you.
This is a unique and emotional OV story, filled with lots of pain, hurt and comfort, and a satisfying hea.

maybe this will get a star rating at another date once i’ve had time to sit with my feelings. i’m conflicted. on one hand, ive never seen omegaverse depicted like this so i was thoroughly engaged. and i guess i didn’t read the full blurb so surprise mmm? which im always a big fan of. we have super complex characters who are dealing with difficult situations (another big bonus). even the side characters are interesting. everything was very fluffy while also being set against a heavy, emotional backdrop which is difficult to do.

BUT on the other, i lowkey hated the relationship dynamics here. idk something was just off. i understand that eli was willing to give up all these things because he’s a good partner, person, whatever but he never felt included to me??? like we focused so heavily on nathaniel helping samuel that eli seems almost neglected until the end where we’re magically all in love and samuel becomes temporarily fine?

Pain, so much pain between these pages, saturating the story with the richest, deepest, and sharpest taste of it. If we could create a bouquet of Pain in all its aromas and nuances, this book would be just that!
Pain is a main character here, just like the other ones - Nathaniel, Samuel, Eli. It is Samuel's constant companion in a life devoid of human interaction, lacking the joy of simple pleasures, because he is a Continues Omega. It is also Nathaniel's friend, because in a world where pheromones and scents are of paramount importance, he is a Zero and is deprived of them. Pain is good acquaintance of Eli, who is a Dominant alpha and a doctor, dealing with pain, loss and devastation on a daily basis. Two men - Nathaniel and Samuel, brought together by cruel biological twists who have shaped their lives in more ways than one. And a third one Eli, who was dealt a hard blow that's difficult to be forgotten. Three pieces of a puzzle that look incompatible, but aren't.
A plot built on what Pain and Trauma can do to a person. A unique, dark, heartbreaking world where compassion, consideration, and empathy are as rare as the rebirth of a Phoenix. Sometimes Consent is the last thing on your mind when someone's existence and health are at stake.
I have rarely come across a book or series where high heat and spiciness are part of the very fabric of the plot, not because the story is kinky or for sheer entertainment, but because heat and spiciness are essential to the development of the story.
It's a kind of accidental polyamory, if I can describe it that way, because none of the characters thought in advance that this would be their life and their first choice. But Life, or Fate, or whatever intervening Force, is out there, likes to test the limits of what a person can endure and make the best outcomes out of the whole mess.
Trauma and the response to it are the beating heart of the story. There is no single way that a person responds to violence, assault, or other traumatic events. But every survivor deserves to be heard, respected, and supported in whatever way they need.
Finding Samuel was an eye opening, life changing moment for Nathaniel. It shattered the blissful quiet of his married life bringing in chaos, uncertainty and the intricacies of navigating something completely new and frightening.
This isn't a story about indefinitely even though it skirts the edges of quite a lot lines of consent and personal boundaries. It's a story about Saving a life that's on the brink of extinction and how it changes perspectives, values and even the future. It's a story about unconventional love and one heart so big, that when everyone else passed by indifferent and uncaring, Nathaniel couldn't. He stopped exactly when a stranger needed someone to halt their daily routine and show up. It was the kind of action that spoke for itself - "You matter". "Life isn't only a Pain"."There is love and it could be beautiful and real".
The TW are not to be trifled with here, so please don't skip them over.
Suicidal thoughts and attempts are a serious matter.

Nathaniel, a rare Zero; Eli, his steady Alpha doctor husband; and Samuel, a Continuous Omega trapped in endless Heat. When Nate finds Sam near death and instinctively saves him, their lives tangle in ways neither he nor Eli could have imagined. What follows is a chaotic, tender, and surprisingly funny journey into found family. Nate’s unique physiology makes him the only one who can soothe Sam’s constant Heats, and Eli’s compassion refuses to let Sam fall through the cracks. Their new triad household grows out of necessity but becomes something deeply human. The writing is hypnotic—sometimes stream‑of‑consciousness, always intense. The spice is constant, almost background noise as the emotional core takes over. Despite trauma, danger, and pheromone‑soaked chaos, the story shines with humor, care, and inclusivity. A bold, immersive, and unexpectedly moving read.

So first of all I freaking love that this author has used the characters Nathaniel, Samuel and Eli from their previous book and sequel and made it omegaverse and so different! I love when authors do this as I also get to stay with these characters longer. This is a bit of a longer book for some but it doesn't feel that way when you start to read and then all of a sudden you're half way through. I love the way this author described and portrayed Nathaniel and Samuel's conditions and the way their bodies are different from others and that they can't control it until they meet and their story unfolds. This was an interesting enjoyable read and I'm happy I got the chance to read it. I'll be on the look out for other books by this author.

This was a complex read. My first thought is to mention the amount of fluids in this book. This is one thing that I had a hard time with, as my sensory issues were flaring big time with certain mental pictures. This book borders on erotica for some the content, but the plot is important.

But the characters are beautifully written, and the plot does in fact thicken. The story is written well, and it is obvious that October is dedicated to their craft. This story of Samuel, Nathaniel and Eli, as well as their family, is written with intention that you can feel in every page. You can feel the pain of each character, each worry and desire woven through their daily lives. Samuel thinks of bridges frequently, and I FEEL that as a disabled human who has dealt with mental health issues from childhood. Some of the omega specifics were different for me, as I do not have much experience with omegaverse writing, but I kept reading to see the characters grow, and grow they did. I enjoyed the read and I thank October Arden for the chance to arc read their book.

I really enjoyed this book. Great world building and wonderful characters. This is the most unique omegaverse world I've read about- and scarier when you think about it. Poor Samuel's story and condition broke my heart. Nathaniel found him at the very beginning of this story and just like that I was completely sucked in- and horrified for Samuel's suffering and his initial willingness to give up than go on; Nathaniel's determination to help him. I really liked Samuel's personality, different from Nathaniel's. And I loved Eli. I thought he was so sweet and supportive. I got so emotionally invested in these guys. 5 stars

What a delightful read this was, and the teaser at the end just left me wanting more, Can’t wait to read Dominant Beta!

Eli, Samuel and Nathaniel are still as chaotic and charming as they were in “The Care of Broken Things” and this alternate omegaverse story felt like the missing chapters we should have had in “Boyfriend on Parole”

Trigger Warnings should definitely be read in advance (beginning of the book), the story has some strong themes, is well written and paced has the funniest banter!

This is a book about (found) family finding together through medical crises, about different kinds of relationships that are possible if you keep an open heart. It is intense, tragic and heartwarming. It was interesting to see the characters of a previous book in a new unique setting. I would have loved to see other POVs throughout the book.
I am not 100% on board with the writing style. I would prefer it a little more straightforward, maybe. I still enjoyed this book and this author's unique voice.

I finished most of this in short order and I was fascinated, although I'm still not sure if I enjoyed it or not! It was painful and complicated and I didn't entirely understand the world or its rules, but I loved the characters. It might have helped that I was familiar with them already, although Samuel especially presents differently in this one, because of his different experiences. This was sometimes very difficult to read, but also compelling.

This book was interesting, but a little too chaotic for my taste. The “rules” of this AU were not very clear, so I found myself getting distracted trying to recall whether that “rule” was new or had already been mentioned, and whether it conflicted with other areas of the story.
The saliva play also squicked me out, but that’s more of a personal taste thing (no pun intended!)

Note: I did not read the original story thus was based on, so the characters were new to me.

Two very different men are going to be pulled together, one has no connection to the outer world while his now husband is ruled by being on heat all the time. A fire may just change how the world looks like for them both. They will be faced with many different challenges as they try to heal them. A great read

Unconventionally beautiful omegaverse

My heart broke for Samuel, constantly at the mercy of and made a prisoner of his own body.
Nathaniel is the quiet strength thst steps into the gap to be the shield Samuel so desperately needs and Eli is the absolute unshakable shield that completely protects them.

DNF

I’m sorry, I truly wanted to like this, but I draw the line at an adult male standing naked in a shower while in heat holding a 12 year old girl. Regardless of how innocent the scene may have been intended to be, as a mother it made me extremely uncomfortable and felt completely unnecessary to include and I won’t be continuing the story.
