After losing her husband, Kate Sanders wasn’t sure she’d ever be whole again. For months, she kept herself together for her two kids, hiding her grief behind strength and structure. Love, sex, romance? Those belonged to another lifetime.
Then came Nico DeLuca, her new boss, a man who lived in suits and schedules, structure and silence. But beneath the polished exterior, Kate found something a patient heart, a careful touch, and a passion that burned far deeper than she was ready for.
Their connection was impossible to ignore, but falling in love again comes with guilt, grief, and the messy business of healing. As Kate begins to reclaim the parts of herself she thought were gone forever, Nico must navigate what it means to step into a life already halfway built, and to earn not just Kate’s trust, but the love of her children too.
Some stories begin with falling in love. Theirs begins after the fall.
Nikki Harlow has been telling stories in her head for as long as she can remember — long before she ever dared to write them down. Drawn to messy emotions, complicated characters, and love stories that feel as real as they are consuming, she writes romance that celebrates growth, healing, passion, and the courage it takes to choose connection.
Her books center characters who don’t fit the mold: women who’ve lived, loved, and learned; men with rough edges and soft hearts; and relationships that prove it’s never too late to rewrite your story. Nikki believes romance isn’t about perfection — it’s about honesty, vulnerability, and finding someone who sees you exactly as you are.
When she’s not writing emotionally intense scenes or falling in love with her own fictional men, she’s usually plotting her next story, talking books with readers, or daydreaming about the next characters who refuse to leave her imagination alone.
This is the 3rd book in the Noir series. We have Kate the FMC who is widowed with 2 kids and starts a new job where she meets Nico . Kate feels like she is betraying Ben her husband as she wants to move on since his death. The one quote I loved is “Healing doesn’t come with a timeline”. Please read your trigger warnings if you have any as this does speak on death . Thank you Nikki once again for allowing me to arc read for you did not disappoint.
What a beautiful story! Thankful to be given this ARC! The grief, the healing and the love was a wildly beautiful ride I was happy to take. I loved the space that was held for Kate by Nico as a grieving widow and the space that was held for Liv as a grieving child. This story wrecked me in the best way. Another beautiful work of art by Nikki Harlow! The slow burn was worth it 🥵🌶️
Tropes: Single mom Widow Work place romance He’s her boss Rope play
I haven't lost my husband(thankfully), but a lot of Kate's struggles resonate with me still. I got misty eyes several times. I a mom of two young kids and often feel like I lose myself to exhaustion and life's demands. I felt the children's adjustment and acting out was slightly under done, and that the resolve for those struggles were too easy. However, it could be argued that the absolute war raised against a new parent partner is an overdone trope, and kids aren't all the same. Thank you for this
I’ve loved every Nikki Harlow book I’ve read, but this one was exceptional. Days later, it’s still sitting heavy in my chest. The story follows a single mom grieving her spouse; trying to stay strong for her kids while figuring out how to move forward without letting go of the love she lost.
I loved watching Kate explore Shibari with curiosity, finding not domination but a way to quiet the chaos in her mind. And Nico… his patience and respect were everything. He never pushed, simply waited for her to be ready: for exploration, for trust, for something more. What stayed with me most was how tenderly this book handles healing. It’s messy, nonlinear, full of guilt, hope, fear, and small moments of reclaiming yourself. Kate’s journey felt so honest and deeply human. And Nico shows what real support looks like: steady, gentle, never trying to “fix” her. Their connection grows slowly and safely, making the payoff feel earned.
This story is tender, a little heavy at times, empowering, and beautifully real. It’s about grief, identity, desire, and the terrifying hope of starting over and Nikki Harlow delivers it with so much compassion. Easily one of her best in my opinion.
Okay… this one was different from the others in the Noir series.
Same world—Noir (that club 👀), same friend group finding love—but this one hit way more emotional.
Kate just lost her husband and is trying to hold it together for her kids… and that’s such a rollercoaster.
Then her boss Nico comes in with his side looks, helpfulness, and those looks!
The boss/employee tension?? Yeah it’s there. The romance?? Slow, careful, kinda messy and raw. But really this one is about her learning how to live again without feeling guilty for it.
It still has the Noir/kink club element, but it’s not as heavy in this one—it’s more about healing and trust than anything else.
I liked that it felt more real and emotional especially that one chapter from a third POV!
After the Fall has to be my favorite out of the Noir Series. I cried heavily in this book with some laughs along the way. Witnessing a character completely break down just to be pieced back together one shard at a time was so genuine. I absolutely loved seeing the grief effecting each character in different ways. Losing a major part of your heart is so difficult even more so when you try to move on without leaving anyone out. The answer is yes you can have two soulmates in one lifetime and this book proved it. Thank you for allowing me to review your entire series it’s been a wild ride. I can’t wait to read more works by Nikki Harlow. Highly recommend
There are several trigger warning but it was worth it.
This story starts off with tragedy- the loss of a spouse. Harlow captures all the feels with her words. Devastation, doubt, guilt, joy, and overwhelming love. Not just for the main character Kate, but also her daughter Liv. This is a well written story showing that you can pick up the pieces after a devastating loss. That it is okay to still love your lost spouse. That it is okay to start a new chapter.
This is the third book of the series, but I feel like each can be read as a stand alone. I have enjoyed them all and definitely recommend the entire series!
This was an ARC read, thank you to Nikki for letting me read this beautiful book!
This book made me sad, and happy, and mad. This book made me feel. I love it and read it so blood fast! It's not too long, and the spice 👌👌 make sure to read the triggers, I haven't lots my husband but I can imagine this book would hurt to read if I had. It was very well written and realistic feelings wise, I believe. Give this a read if you want to read a widowed mother getting a second chance at love and everything that comes with that 👌
Kate lost her husband in an accident that changed her whole life and now she has to return to work full-time after staying at home with her children for years. Nico is looking for a marketing assistant and Kate fills the bill. As they work together, they find that they are both attracted to the other but don't do anything about it. Then, as Kate's friends push her back out into the world, she runs into Nico in a club he owns, and then everything changes. This is a bit of a spicy read that you will really enjoy.
I’m so very thankful to have received this book as an ARC in return for my honest review! I absolutely devoured this book and did not want to put it down! The characters had me kicking my feet the entire time and I love how sweet and understanding Nico was from the beginning! I love the girls friendship throughout the whole series and how it never fails any of the 3 of them!! If you haven’t read this series, you’re truly missing out!! Such great and even spicy reads!!❤️😍
OHH my goodness, this series could not have ended ANY better. The emotion in this one was so real and the pacing was also so perfect. I love little Liv so much and feel for her so deeply and I appreciate the realness that we got in this story, especially from her. Next was Nico. The way he stepped in and took care of Kate’s heart but also didn’t rush her was everything. Can’t wait to see what comes next from Nikki and SO thankful to be on this team to receive ARCs!!!
The best story of the series! This one truly has deeper meaning and makes you feel all the emotions, of all 3 books in this series I liked this one best! The characters are both very likeable and their kink is not just sexual but has deeper meaning to them. I will say that I hardly know our MMC, because his background info is very sparse. And I feel like the timing/timeline of the last few events is very rapid and fast. But other than that, I liked the storyline a lot.
Ohhhh Nikki you broke my heart with this one. The beginning absolutely broke me. Watch Kate grieve and move on was inspiring, no matter what you go through in life things will get better with time and support. Watching Kate and Nico fall in love was so sweet and eye opening.
This whole series was amazing and so proud of this author and her first series. Congratulations gir. You totally rocked it.
Third book in the series and follows the third best friend in the friend group :)
She faces sad news in this book. This book shows how grief is not linear, some days are better and some days are worse
Her going to therapy and also having her kids go was a great move. It might have been hard but it was great to see her be firm but gentle with her daughter
What a lovely book. I dived into this storyline. Love the Noir club and its kink nights… especially the intro into shibari, from both main characters viewpoints. Great spice, great storyline. The FMC learns to live with and through her grief. And you get to watch the slow burn between the two main characters evolve into a well developed relationship.
When Kate finds herself a widow with two children and she has to return to work, she finds instant attraction and connection with her boss. At a girls night out she finds herself at club Noir and learns her boss is the owner. I enjoyed this story it wasna quick fast paced read.
ARC review Thank you to Nikki Harlow for this ARC. this is book 3 in the Noir Series and this one is sooo good! I loved this second chance Romance for a widow and her 2 children. trying to navigate feelings after loosing ones spouse is heartbreaking but was routing for these 2 all the way.
I absolutely loved this book! This whole series is worth the read but this book was all the feelings. Kate lost her husband and has to learn to live life without him. Learning that it’s okay to continue on with life is hard. The end of this book was fantastic!
Grief, healing, and finding your way back to yourself are at the heart of Kate's story and I loved how honestly it was handled. Her struggles felt incredibly real, especially as she tried to balance being a single mom, navigating her grief, and figuring out who she was beyond everything life expected of her. There were definitely a few moments that got me misty eyed. 😢 The way Nico supported Kate without ever trying to rush or fix her was 🤌🏼!! His patience, respect, and willingness to let her move at her own pace made their slow burn connection feel so genuine. I also loved watching Kate explore something new and find a way to quiet the chaos in her mind. This was tender, emotional, and beautifully human. 🧡
I looked forward to this book the most, out of the 3 book series. Kate's story made me cry and laugh while also making me feel things I haven't felt in a long time (my dad passed away a handful of years ago - look at TW). While this is mostly from Kate and Nico's perspective, the chapter from her daughter's perspective absolutely destroyed me 😭. I definitely recommend this entire series. They are all such quick reads (for me) and I enjoyed them all in different ways and for different reasons. Amy, Mel and Kate are BFF goals ✨️
