Thank you to NetGalley and Bethany House Publishing for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

If walls were able to talk, what would they say?

In 1879, Eloise James is determined to find out the truth of what happened to her sister Evania, who disappeared after being admitted to an asylum by their father. While investigating Evania's disappearance, Eloise discovers evidence of patients dying and their bodies being stolen.

In the present day, Tilly Thompson finds herself in possession of the old James Mansion, a gift to her by her aging grandfather. Upon exploring the estate, she discovers human remains hidden behind the mansion's walls, making Tilly intent to uncover the secrets of the James family's dark legacy.

I have enjoyed every book I've read by Jaime Jo Wright, and The Resurrection of Evania James was no exception. Wright is a master in dual timeline Gothic mysteries. This is the perfect spooky book to read in October with the eerie asylum and creepy century-old mansion settings, but Wright has the unique ability to provide hope in the face of fear. Both Eloise and Tilly are characters who have always felt unseen by those around them. Eloise has suffered under the emotional abuse by her father, while Tilly has struggled with finding a place to belong. In this beautifully woven story, both women find their belonging as they discover who God has called them to be.

This, like every other book I have read by Jaime Jo Wright, kept me turning the pages, anxious to find out what would happen next. I always wonder how she's going to tie it all together, but she has done so masterfully once again. I would recommend Wright's books to anyone! She points readers to truth while also keeping them engaged in truly chilling stories. Add this one to your fall TBR!

Content Considerations:
-Emotional abuse
-Depictions of death and grave robbing
-Mention of a stillborn child

💭What I thought…
This book was so atmospheric and had all the gothic vibes! Once I started this audiobook, it was hard to quit listening. It was that good! I don’t want to give too much away and spoil a main plot point, but some of the things mentioned actually happened in the late 1800s. I enjoyed that the author tied that piece of history into this story.

Read this story if you enjoy:
🖤dual timelines
🖤gothic vibes
🖤atmospheric thrillers
🖤creepy mansions
🖤dark family secrets
🖤themes of faith

A big thank you to NetGalley and RBmedia for the advance copy of this audiobook. All opinions are my own.

Her sister’s free-spirited nature and disregard for propriety is a threat to their austere father so he has her committed. Decades later, another young woman finds the ghostly shadowy presence of past evil keeping her palpable company in her new house. Jaime Jo Wright’s Inspirational Gothic Suspense has fast become some of my most highly anticipated reads each year and The Resurrection of Evania James is no exception.

A dual-timeline gothic suspense tale opens in the past with the story of Eloise James, a sheltered young lady brought up to wealth who has followed all the rules of society and the tighter rules of her own father while her sister, Evania, broke free of the tight bonds and lived in the sunshine. Now, her sister is paying a harsh price for living outside their father’s bonds- being institutionalized like a madwoman. However, Eloise slowly realizes that all is not as it seems when it comes to her father’s motives and her sister’s welfare- even her safety. This is the catalyst needed to slip her father’s stringed rules and go to the asylum to bring her sister home to nurse her. Easier said than done even with the help of a cheeky journalist also seeking answers for the darker side of that asylum.

Meanwhile, in the present time, Tilly, a woman who has never fit in among others for her quirks and ways has only ever found understanding among her own family and full acceptance from her beloved grandfather. In a surprising turn of fate, as her grandfather starts slip further away due to Alzheimer’s he places himself in her care and gives her early inheritance of the old James mansion which she has always admired.
Not long after she moves in, strange and spooky occurrences take place and she finds her unlikely partner in figuring it out, the youngest member of the James family who once was her bully and the person who hurt her the most in her high school days. Tilly could never imagine forgiving him let alone relying on him to discover what truths they would dig up in that old house.

If walls could talk… and the walls of the James mansion have seen much. Dark and spooky events happen in these two times and two different women find they are stronger and more intrepid than they think as they face what they must. I enjoyed both heroines and both their timeline stories. They had distinct personalities and situation. The historical details about women being at the mercy of fathers or husbands when it came to being committed caused as many chills as the build of atmosphere and mystery in the present. I was riveted and had to know the final events for both women as things got their most intense.

All in all, The Resurrection of Evania James was as good or better than I anticipated and I felt a letdown that I have to wait once again for the next inspirational gothic suspense from Jaime Jo Wright. The inspirational themes of letting the past go and forgiveness for Tilly and knowing where duty and honor lie for Eloise, the historical and present backdrops, and atmospheric suspense will appeal to a wide range of readers.

I rec'd an eARC via NetGalley and a print copy from Bethany House Publishers and Great Reads Book Promo to read in exchange for an honest review.

“The dynamics of a small town were always a bit like a soap opera.”
A wonderfully mysterious, even spooky dual time story. Just the thing to read on an October evening. And the curious thing is that it is based on real things that happened at the end of the 19th Century.
The prose was flowing, the characters believable and the plot was priceless. This might be my favorite by this author, although I have read and loved every one of Ms Wright’s books.
Told in dual timelines the mysteries are not restricted to the past. In fact the past at times defines what is in the present. From confinement in an insane asylum and body snatching in the 1890s, to DNA technology in the present, this was a mesmerizing story that was hard to put down. I especially like the parts where the mansion was a character in the plot. I appreciated the inspirational slant to the story and the faith of the characters.
“Legacy is the memories that live in its children. The memories that become the choices and the consequences and the blessings. A legacy can be one of broken pieces or a legacy can be one of faith.”

"I can only watch. Listen. Whisper. Then I am silent. Because walls cannot speak. Even when we want to."

Tilly Thompson wasn't sure that she wanted the walls to speak any louder than they already had; finding skeletal remains encased in the walls along a central staircase was enough, thank you very much. On the other hand, she could hardly ignore the precious voice that had obviously been prematurely snuffed out. Working alongside a surprising ally, Tilly determines to discover what might have happened in the historic James Mansion that her grandfather recently purchased for the two of them. As it turns out, memories have a voice of their own.

Over a century earlier, Eloise James is horrified when her overbearing father sends her dear sister Evania to a nearby asylum. Defying her father's dictates, Eloise sneaks away to visit the facility, only to discover that her sister has been declared deceased, and that her remains have been taken to an undisclosed location. Suspecting foul play, Eloise stumbles someone else interested in her quest for the truth, which appears to be much darker than the dead of night when Evania disappeared.

On the one hand, this novel is an exceptional duet of mysteries, but if you read the author's endnotes, which I highly encourage that you do, this story also hints at the power memories can wield, either imprisoning us behind walls of hurt and brokenness or freeing us to expose those same hurts to the power of hope and healing. Our descendants depend on us to make the right choice. It's called a legacy.

🎧ALC Review🎧

In 1870, Eloise James is desperately searching for her sister, who disappeared after being admitted to an asylum. Her search uncovers a disturbing world of grave robbing, stolen bodies, and dangerous secrets. Fast forward to present, where Tilly Thompson discovers human remains hidden inside the walls of an old mansion. As she begins digging in to the home's history, she uncovers a dark mystery connecting the past to the present. Two timelines, plenty of secrets, and a mystery that just might be better left buried!

What a perfectly creepy read for October! I absolutely loved the dual timelines and how the mystery slowly unfolded between the past and present. The eerie atmosphere, suspense, and unsettling moments kept me listening, trying to piece everything together. In fact I listened to this in one setting while working today.

Jaime Jo Wright did such a great job creating that spooky, atmospheric feeling without needing all the gore. Just the right amount of creepy mixed with mystery! If you’re looking for a suspenseful, atmospheric read to add to your fall TBR, this one is definitely worth picking up!

Thank you NetGalley and RBmedia for the opportunity to listen to this book before its release! All thoughts and opinions are my own.

“Maybe one day, love, there’ll be a man who grows up here an’ says ‘enough is enough,’ an’ seeks what is good and true.”

Jaime Jo has done it again!! Her seamless dual-timeline storytelling had me speechless. I absolutely loved this book, every eerie, heartbreaking, sweet, convicting, and encouraging moment. It’s full of mystery, suspense, twists, family secrets, friendship, and faith! I loved these reminders: God sees us as precious even if no one else does, only we can determine the legacy we leave behind, and we should strive for a legacy of faith. Please, please read the author’s notes!

Eloise is smart, caring, and determined. She loved her sister fiercely and wanted to save her. I loved her moments of bravery and her willingness to search for the truth. I loved how she trusted Silas almost from the first second they met. Silas is charming, determined, and smitten with Eloise. I love how he was willing to do just about anything to learn the truth. I loved his charming, flirty personality. I loved that he encouraged Eloise to find the truth with him but he didn’t push her when she was unsure. He truly saw her for who she was, which was so endearing.

Tilly is intelligent and blunt but caring. I loved her devotion to her Grandpa. I loved that even though she was scared a few times she was still trying to find answers. I loved her relationship with her brother and Grandpa. Luke is wounded but kind and trying to live life according to his faith. I loved that he didn’t back down when the family secrets were revealed and tried to find answers himself. I loved the unlikely friendship between these high school “enemies”. Luke was patient and kind with Tilly. She listened and supported him without judgment. I loved their dynamic and how they worked together to find answers.

A few more quotes:
“The walls of this house have seen generations of secrets, and it appears as though someone wants to resurrect them and bring them into the light.” “Secrets are usually kept for a reason,” Tilly said.

“Aw, love, don’t start cryin’. Tears are like fire to butter. They make me melt, and I’ll have nothin’ left in me to fight.”

“You should be proud of yourself,” Tilly said. “No. I’ll never be proud,” Luke replied gently. “I’ll just be grateful. That the old can be made new. That there can be redemption. That I can end a cycle, and new growth can come from it.”

How do you review a book by Jaime Jo Wright?

This one felt different than her other books. Not a bad different, by any means, but deeper, maybe. Richer. I can't tell you the number of times I was brought to tears with this one.

As always, I can't say much because of spoilers, but how...cold...people can be gave me chills.

More than 5 stars for this book! In the words of Anne Shirley, I was "deliciously scared"! This is a spooky book filled with peculiar and otherworldly idiosyncrasies. It also points to human frailness and our innate longing to be loved.

Eloise is a very interesting character. At times she is a strong and capable woman, and then other times she turns into a shrinking violet, bending beneath her overbearing father. She loves her sister, Evania a lot. "Eloise would go to war on her sister's behalf. She would stand before the Grim Reaper and return his life-stealing blows, strike for strike." Tilly is unique. She's never fit in anywhere but she doesn't care. Her life centers around her Grandpa Don. He's her best friend and she loves him with all her heart.

Tilly's recently acquired house is filled with secrets and "visitors" that start to make her feel unsafe. An old rival, Luke, helps her unravel some of the mysteries that end up being linked to his family. Through their unlikely friendship, Luke finds healing from his traumatic past.

Jaime Jo Wright truly has such a gift for creating stories that are creepy and mysterious... but also faith-filled where nothing is ever quite what it seems. Her stories are always unlike any others within the Christian fiction genre, and I always look forward to reading each one. This one was no exception. From the start, I found myself drawn into both Eloise's story in 1879 as she tried to uncover what happened to her sister in the asylum and Tilly's as she uncovers human remains and uncovers the secrets of the James' family past. These stories were weaved together brilliantly, each helping to piece together what had happened in the past and how it all fit together. It was an intriguing story that kept me guessing and I loved every moment. If you're looking for a perfect spooky read that still honors God, this (and Jaime Jo Wright's books in general) are certainly ones to check out.

Jaime Jo Wright does it again! I have read every book of hers to date and I'm just as impressed with her work as the last. I love how creepy and eerie the stories are and yet they have so much meaning.

Eloise James is the daughter of a powerful man who controls her every move. When her sister Eviana is sent to am asylum for some poor choices Eloise looks into what is happening at the asylum.

Tilly Thompson and her grandfather purchase the old James mansion. The first week they find a dead body in the walls. Immediately strange things begin to happen in the house. Tilly works hard to discover the past.

This story is about compassion and that not everything is as it seems. It's beautifully written and of course a page turner as is every other book written by Jaime
Jo Wright! I highly recommend this book!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Captivating Gothic Mystery with a Wonderful Surprise Ending!

Disclosure: I received a complimentary audiobook of The Resurrection of Evania James by Jaime Jo Wright through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

I’ve enjoyed books by Jaime Jo Wright before, but this was my first experience with one of her suspense novels, and I absolutely loved it!

The dual timelines were wonderfully woven together, although I have to admit that the 1879 storyline was my favorite. I was completely drawn into the mystery surrounding Evania’s disappearance and found myself constantly trying to piece together the clues and figure out what had really happened.

What I especially appreciated was the atmosphere of the story. It had that wonderful Gothic feeling, filled with secrets, mystery, and anticipation, without being overly dark, graphic, or frightening. The suspense came from wanting to uncover the truth, and I found that so enjoyable!

I also appreciated the Christian faith elements woven throughout the story. I always enjoy when faith has a place in the books I read, and it was lovely to have that spiritual dimension alongside such an intriguing mystery.

And the ending! I certainly didn’t see that coming! I love when an author can keep me guessing and then genuinely surprise me with the conclusion.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Erin Bennett, and her narration was excellent. She brought the story to life and made the listening experience even more enjoyable.

This was such an exciting, engaging mystery from beginning to end. Five wonderful stars from me, and I’m certainly looking forward to reading more of Jaime Jo Wright’s suspense novels!

The Resurrection of Evania James by Jaime Jo Wright was unputdownable. I gasped in disbelief. I panted in disgust. I railed at the audacity of the ones carrying out such evil. And yet, as Jaime Jo always does, she put light and hope into the story as well. I had to just sit and take it all in when I finished the book. I highly recommend it!!

Jaime Jo nails it again with this brilliant dual timeline that somehow perfectly marries creepy history with faith, thriller, and modern mystery!
In 1879, Eloise James’s sister Evania is sent to an asylum by their wealthy father—and she then mysteriously disappears. Feisty Eloise proceeds to unravel the disturbing strands of truth with the help of an unlikely, rough-around-the-edges journalist, Silas Dobbs.

In current day, Tilly Thomson is surprised by her grandfather’s purchase of a somewhat dilapidated Gothic mansion for them to live in—one that has been in the successful James family for generations. The new home is not only rich in history but, as Tilly discovers, comes complete with a buried body in its walls!
Family secrets and devotion, sweet romance, a thread of faith, and page-turning suspense… this is a haunting yet compelling read.

I’ll be honest, this one was almost too much for me. The past storyline was just SO horrific. I know the history, so it wasn’t shocking, but it’s just tough to read about a father so easily discarding his own daughter in order to save his name.

As always with JJ’s books, the eerie vibes are immaculate, and though there are two stories happening, each one feels complete and ends with things tied up or resolved in a way that I wasn’t left with questions.

Overall, this one was another page turner from Jaime Jo!

Atmospheric dual-timeline tale of Gothic suspense.

The Resurrection of Evania James by Jaime Jo Wright is an eerie, atmospheric Gothic suspense tale and perfect entertainment not only for the spooky season, but for the entire year. Two tales of suspense unfold: one set in 1879, the other in the present, and both are mesmerizing as the past encroaches on and informs the present.

In the earlier timeline, Eloise James is horrified when her father has her younger sister, Evania, committed to an asylum for the chronically insane as his solution for dealing with her grief over the loss of her illegitimate infant during childbirth. But when Eloise gets word that the hospitalized Evania is at death’s door, she defies their father and travels to the institution with the intention of demanding her release and taking her to distant relatives to help her convalesce. However, once she arrives at the asylum, she discovers that many patients admitted there are never seen again, and Evania is among the missing.

In current times, Tilly Thompson, the caregiver for her grandfather who is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, moves with him into the James Mansion, the ancestral home of the town’s founding family, only to accidentally discover the skeletal remains of a young woman entombed behind a stairwell wall. Together with her high school nemesis, one of the last members of the James family, she tries to uncover the story of the woman in the wall.

Both storylines had me enthralled from the start with their earnest, engaging, and very vulnerable female protagonists. Eloise, heartbroken over her beloved sister’s fate, has always been an obedient daughter and is defenseless before her father, who sees her as little more than property. Although his attitude is the prevailing sentiment of the time, her father is truly a cruel, unfeeling tyrant. Tilly is neurodivergent and was the target of bullying in high school; her most painful treatment came at the hands of the popular scion of the town’s founding family, Luke James. Nurtured by her paternal grandfather, she has become his caregiver in his waning years after his recent diagnosis of early Alzheimer’s. Knowing her affinity for the large Victorian mansion, abandoned by Luke James and his brother, Kyle, after the deaths of their parents, Grandpa Don purchases the old home as a gift for Tilly in return for her caring for him there until he eventually succumbs to his disease.

From the start, the house holds clues to the past, and the author’s vivid descriptions create a waiting-and-watching atmosphere. Tilly must overcome the pain of her memories to pursue the mystery of the unidentified woman, and her alliance with her former tormentor reveals that he, too, suffered from the memories of his own past. It was satisfying to watch the two reconcile their memories, collaborate, and see their relationship evolve as they work to uncover the truth hidden behind the walls of James Mansion.

I recommend THE RESURRECTION OF EVANIA JAMES to readers of gothic mysteries, suspense, and thrillers.

I received an ARC of The Resurrection of Evania James from Jaime Jo Wright and Bethany House Fiction. Thank you for the advance copy for my review!

I was immediately drawn to the premise of this book: two mysteries unfolding in the same gothic mansion, separated by more than a century. With a late 19th century storyline involving a missing sister and an asylum. A present day mystery involving a body hidden within the walls, and an underlying Christian theme, this book had so many elements I love!

Overall, I enjoyed the story. I particularly enjoyed the way the two timelines complemented one another. Each storyline helped illuminate the other, and I appreciated how the mysteries were woven together. I found Tilley’s modern day storyline especially compelling, in part because I felt more immersed in her world.

Where I struggled was with the historical storyline. I enjoy gothic fiction and I wanted to feel more transported into the late 1800s setting. Although there were descriptions of the setting, I never quite felt immersed in that world the way I had hoped. I also wanted more depth in the characterization, particularly for Eloise, Silas and Eloise’s father. Eloise & Silas’s relationship had potential, but I wanted a better understanding of Silas and a more developed sense of how their connection evolved. Some of the other characters in the historical timeline could have benefited from more development as well.

I also struggled with a few of the revelations toward the end. I enjoy being surprised by a mystery, but I want to feel that the pieces have been there all along, even if I haven’t put them together. Some of the twists felt abrupt rather than earned, and I would have appreciated more groundwork leading up to them.

****What changed my perspective, however, was the author’s note.****

I had approached this book primarily as a gothic mystery, but learning more about its allegorical meaning gave me a deeper appreciation for the story. The idea of buried secrets eventually being brought into the light, and the painful process of confronting those truths before healing can begin, really resonated with me.

The author writes:

“We must walk through the pain, barefoot on shards of glass, our hearts exposed and vulnerable in our hands, before new life can be breathed into our battered souls.”

I absolutely love this sentiment. There is something deeply meaningful about the idea that we must confront what has been buried, even when doing so is painful, before we can begin to heal and experience restoration.

In retrospect, I almost wish I had known about the allegory before beginning the book. I wonder whether I would have noticed different connections and appreciated certain aspects of the story more deeply. In fact, the author’s note left me considering a reread with this new perspective.

While I was somewhat underwhelmed by aspects of the storytelling, I still enjoyed the book and appreciated the deeper message woven into its mysteries. I would recommend it to readers who enjoy Christian fiction, gothic mysteries, and dual timelines, especially those who appreciate stories with a deeper allegorical meaning.

I’m glad I read it, and I’m curious how my perspective might change if I return to read it again after reading Jaime Jo Wright’s note at the end!

Oh my gosh, this book. Eloise and Evania are already grown women when we meet them in 1879, so you know from the start that neither of them is still here in the present day. But knowing that, whatever happens in this mystery, didn’t make it hurt any less. I got so attached to these women that it was hard to come to terms with the fact that they’re gone. This book had me forgetting to breathe. My heart was racing, and I was constantly shaking my head in disbelief at the horrors that went on behind closed doors back then. I often had to put the book down just to remind myself to breathe and take a minute.

This is the third book I’ve read by Jaime Jo Wright, all of them haunting gothic mysteries, and she is officially one of my favorite authors. Something consistent across all three, and something I absolutely love, is how she completely changes her writing style for each timeline. The 1879 chapters are eloquent, poetic, and so very Victorian, not just in the dialogue but in the narration itself, while the present day chapters feel completely modern. She moves between the two so effortlessly that the past never feels like a flashback. It’s its own full story, and it feels like reading two stories side by side.

Both timelines share the same location, the James mansion, which makes the house a character all its own. It holds tragic history, secrets, and memories. People come and go across generations, but the house has seen it all.

I love reading about brave women in an era when women were meant to be seen and not heard, with their lives mapped out for them and any independent thought risking being written out of society. Eloise and Evania’s story is so heartbreaking. They are completely controlled by the upper-class men in their lives and desperately want a way out. Evania goes missing early on, but Eloise talks about her so often that we still come to know her through her sister’s eyes. And in the present day, Tilly Thompson is a little odd, a little nerdy, a homebody who has always been a bit different, and I absolutely loved her.

As always with Jaime Jo Wright’s books, the heartbeat for me is respecting what came before us and honoring the stories of those who lived before our time. The world can feel so big and lonely sometimes, but there’s something so comforting in knowing that other people have lived, loved, and laughed in the same places we do. We’re not so different after all.

I recommend this to anyone who loves strong, empowered women, especially in the 19th century, with a twist of hauntings, creepy mansions, and gothic, spooky mystery.

I cannot think of one thing I did not like about this book. Of course, this author is one of my go-to reads and I’ve read all but one of her books.
The premise of this tale is back in 1879 the James family inhabited the James Mansion … back in the day, the James family was a prominent one and Father, as he is not-so-affectionately called, was a wealthy man. But … where did his wealth come from is the question. He had two daughters, Evania and Eloise, and a deceased wife (the girls’ mother). Evania stepped out of what would be deemed appropriate behavior in the day and terrible things happened. So much so that she was shipped off to an asylum, to which Eloise did not agree. In Eloise’s ventures (again stepping out of appropriate behavior) she meets Silas who himself is of a dubious nature, or so it seems. Let me just say that Father was not happy with Eloise’s behavior. The more Eloise and Silas asked questions, the more they discovered and the more they discovered …
Fast forward to present day and we meet Tilly Thompson and Grandpa Don. Grandpa Don suffers from Alzheimer’s and I have to say the author’s portrayal of this devastating disease … so spot on. Anywho, Grandpa Don purchased James Mansion for Tilly with a couple stipulations to which Tilly agreed because James Mansion … well, it was James Mansion after all. Enter Erik, Tilly’s brother. Enter Luke, a long-ago crush of Tilly’s. Enter … the walls talking. And the mansion’s secrets revealed.
I was intrigued by the chapters that are simply called: If Walls Could Talk. The secrets they could tell!
To me, once again, this author has absolutely nailed the details, the intricacies of James Mansion’s walls and how they revealed their secrets, Grandpa Don’s illness, the discovering of the truths of what laid behind the walls for so many decades. The ghostliness and the hauntedness of the James Mansion.
I would have to say that this is my second-most favorite book of this author … not to be outshined by The Vanishing at Castle Moreau which is the first book I read by this author.
If you like ghostly hauntings and secrets from long-past being revealed, pick up Evania’s story. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Jaime Jo Wright is the master of dual timeline mysteries. She introduces a mysterious event, then weaves the past and present together to unravel the truth.

In 1879, Evania James has brought dishonor to the James name by having an illicit affair and giving birth to an illegitimate baby. Her grief when the baby is stillborn gives her father the means of getting rid of the problem. He has her confined to an insane asylum! Her sister, Eloise, is horrified and determined to rescue her.

In the present day, Tilly Thompson's beloved Grandpa Don is in the early stages of Alzheimer's. He knows how much she loves history and purchases the James Mansion for her. Tilly wants to give her Grandpa the best life possible, so the two move into the mansion so she can be his caregiver.

As the book progresses, these two women slowly uncover several horrific deeds. Eloise learns that patients of the asylum disappear, probably at the hands of grave robbers! She encounters a would-be reporter named Silas Dobbs, who has also lost family members to this horror. The two decide to work together to reveal the truth.

Meanwhile, Tilly stumbles upon a gruesome discovery in her new home and has to rely on Luke James, the last resident of the mansion, for some answers. The book is full of twists, a bit of romance, and a lot of faith in God. Both women receive wisdom from their family who point out: "You are exactly who God made you to be." "God did not create you to walk alone."

The author shines a light on several social issues along the way, including addiction, the way women were treated in the late 1800's and the horrors of grave robbing. All in all, I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery mixed with messages of faith.

"Legacy is the memories that live in its children. The memories that become the choices and the consequences and the blessings... If walls could talk, then that is what I would say."

It's another beautifully written, thought-provoking, heart-stirring dual time suspense novel from Jamie Jo Wright. The author's books have become less jump-scare scary and goosebump eerie in recent years (there are still those moments in the book though) but with the same delightful amount of heart, soul and suspense. Eloise from 1879 was the meek, pliable older daughter of a powerful and wealthy man in New Jamestown, IN. Her loyalty to her family and her hunger for love and acceptance made Eloise real, vulnerable, and lovable. Tilly from the present time was quirky, smart, loyal to her family, compassionate and totally unfiltered, which made for honest and transparent conversations. I really enjoyed Tilly's friendship with Luke; it showed that people can change and how powerful forgiveness can be. Generational sin and evil created suspense in both timelines and it was gratifying to see both Luke and his older brother break free from the cycle of sin and death mired in the James family. Luke's faith was admirable even in the face of loss, grief, and pain. Silas from 1879 was also a worthy hero though we didn't see him as much with Eloise as we did Luke with Tilly. And the twists and turns in the plot! Oh, they will surprise and delight you as the puzzle pieces all fall into place.

If you enjoy Jaime Jo Wright's books, you will absolutely love this one. If you've never read a Jaime Jo Wright book, I highly recommend you pick this one. Full of suspense, twists and turns, fantastic characters, and with the great theme of redemption scaffolding the story, this book will captivate you from the beginning to the end. 4.5 stars

“But Tilly believed that memories shouldn’t be forgotten. They should be resurrected. To remind the living of good to be repeated and, more so, to warn them of the bad that should be forever forsaken.”

Jaime Jo Wright spins another suspenseful mystery, full of spook and intrigue around the generational history of a family deep in sin and their involvement with resurrectionism, the illegal selling of corpses. Although the women in the family have been forced to be submissive, Eloise and her friend Silas work together to bring light to the horrific secrets of the Asylum where her sister Evania has been sent by her father. Eloise’s love and devotion to her sister is beautiful to see, and her tenacity to find the answers and justice her sister deserves. I loved how Eloise, although more meek and submissive from suffering years of abuse, had a quiet determination and strength to expose and bring light into a dark and potential hopeless situation.

I had never heard the term resurrectionism before, but I knew of the concept of selling bodies illegally for monetary gain. Although the practice of resurrectionism in this story took place in 1879, the unfortunate reality is that this practice still exists today. This story gives hope that although this evil happens in the world, there are those who are willing to expose this evil and bring justice and closure to those who are impacted.

This book is a perfect fall spooky read set in a historic gothic mansion, hidden family secrets, small town mystery, light overcoming darkness, the power of strong sibling relationships, and hope through persevering for the truth.

Jaime Jo Wright has earned her reputation as the Gothic Queen, but The Resurrection of Evania James may be one of her most haunting novels yet. With the skill of a literary artist, Wright paints two timelines with equal mastery, weaving an atmosphere that feels darker and more unsettling than ever. Perhaps it's the story's unflinching look at human greed and depravity—or the way her wonderfully unconventional characters expose the frailties we all share. Whatever the reason, this is more than a Gothic mystery. It's a story that lingers, leaving readers with plenty to ponder about the darkness in human nature and the hope that reaches beyond it.

THE STORY: In 1879, Eloise James searches for her missing sister, Evania, after discovering disturbing evidence of stolen remains at the asylum where she was committed. With the help of aspiring journalist Silas Dobbs, she uncovers a sinister network of underground resurrectionists. In the present day, Tilly Thompson discovers human remains hidden within a Gothic mansion her grandfather has purchased, leading her to investigate the James family’s dark history. As the two timelines converge, long-buried secrets threaten to resurrect dangers best left forgotten.

5 STARS BECAUSE the Gothic Queen knows how to draw readers in and hold them by the throat until they can barely breathe—in a good way. Yet beneath the chilling atmosphere and unsettling revelations lies a powerful theme of redemption that leads to a satisfying—and surprising—conclusion. Jaime Jo Wright has done it again!

Another win from Jaime Jo Wright! This one definitely has ghost vibes and I was loving every minute of it!

The story is told in three POV‘s, the past, the present, and the “if walls could talk“ these sections are literally coming from the voice of "the walls". Very creative! Kind of like being a fly on the wall.

In books like these, where there is a past and present, the past parts are always my favorite! And that is no exception in this book. I loved reading about Eloise and Evania back in the late 1800s. Also this is a favorite time period for me to read about. This really made me feel like I was back in time. I love how the two time periods compliment each other.

Character development was excellent! After only a third of this book I really felt like I knew these characters and held some of them in my heart! Eloise of course was a favorite of mine. But also… Silas, I fell head over heels for him right away! I did also like the characters in the present day , Tilly and Luke! :-) I also loved Grandpa who was suffering with Alzheimer's. I thought this was very tastefully done and having dealt with dementia in our family - this felt very real to me.

As always in Jaime Jo Wright's books, both timelines, past and present, could hold a book on their own. But together… It is magic! I highly recommend this one, especially if you are a fan of ghost stories or historical fiction.

The Resurrection of Evania James by Jaime Jo Wright is another fabulous gothic Christian mystery read! Inside, readers are taken into a dual timeline of events that both intersect and have importance on the current time period. A woman searches for her lost sister from an asylum. The scary factor is that patients were dying and bodies of the deceased were robbed or taken to be used. This almost has Frankenstein vibe to it. Graveyard robbery. The woman continues her for her sister hoping to find her alive. Then, we have the present time period of a woman who finds human remains entombed into the walls of her ancestor's home, Her family is hiding dark secrets...The truth will come to light and the evil will face the day for their crimes. The women will have their story come to light. Justice, truth, hope, family, and danger all entwined perfectly in this suspenseful novel. Jaime JO Wright brings historical fiction to life and makes it so eerie, mysterious, and deadly that readers like me, continue to come back and beg for more stories. The Resurrection of Evania James combines many genres like historical, gothic literature, Christian, suspense thriller, and crime fiction all into one unforgettable masterpiece. I would truly love to see Jaime Jo Wright's books featured as movies on Masterpiece Mystery. The Agatha Christie type of mystery is a lure no crime fiction or literate fan could ignore. The past won't stay quiet anymore...hope and redemption are also included in this read.

The Resurrection Of Evania James by Jamie Jo Wright is a historical Christian fiction that is expected to be released out at the end of this month. Tilly Thompson is in our current time frame and she finds mummified remains in the walls of the mansion that he grandfather just bought. In this story we also get to hear the story of Evania who was over a century older than Tilly. Eloise's sister, Evana, is sent to an asylum by her father and Eloise finds that her sister is reported dead and her body has been taken away to another location. Now it is up to Eloise to solve the case and find out what is happening at the asylum and what happened to Evania. Along with the help from Silas Dobbs, who is a journalist at the time. I really liked the dual timeline in this book where we are in the past and the present. It made the story much more interesting to me. I love older homes with an interesting history like this mansion has. And the fact that Tilly is also trying to figure out what happened to the body found is another draw to the story. I read this one in one sitting and loved that the past was so sorted and there was so much happening with Evana's father and Evana. The mystery leaves you guessing till the end and the creepy vibes in this one are just spot on. I look forward to more of the author's books!

ARC Review of The Resurrection of Evania James 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Since my childhood, when I greedily consumed all the Nancy Drew books at my local library, mystery/suspense has been my favorite genre. I have loved every book of Jaime's I've read, and I'm eager to someday finish reading all the rest. I plan to collect all the shelf trophies as well. 📚

I knew the bare minimum of the plot going into this read, and that's really the best way a mystery should be savored, don't you agree? So I shall not be enlightening you any further with spoilers regarding the actual storyline. If you require more than Evania James is "An Atmospheric Dual Timeline Christian Gothic Mystery and Suspense Novel" then you can find the blurb on Jaime's posts and wherever her books are sold.

What you really want or need to know is about the atmosphere and feelings that I experienced whilst reading. I shall do my best.

The setting of an old mansion was perfect. The house played a main character in this story. It was fairly easy to imagine myself walking through the hallways and rooms, admiring the beautiful windows that bring light into what would otherwise be a dark stairway (not a spoiler, you can see it in the cover!)

It was definitely spooky 👻 and filled with tension. You won't find humorous situations or conversation to lighten things up, though there are some happy moments sprinkled throughout. The dual timelines that take you through the mysteries and the unfolding solutions in both times are perfect. And the added *bit* of romance is the cherry on the top.

Are we destined to follow in the footsteps of those who've gone before us, suffering from generational curses of the choices of our ancestors? Or do we hold the power to change ourselves and our future? What lessons can we learn from history?

This was a five star read for me, I read it all in a single day, in between regular life happenings. Definitely recommend, and will read again.

I will never tire of how wonderfully Jaime Jo Wright lays out a novel! The first half introduces us to the characters and gives us the story and information so we can form our questions. There's a heartfelt look into the characters; there's building mystery and suspense. I have so many questions by the time she slowly reveals the answers in the last half of the book.

The Resurrection of Evania James is a dual timeline, like Wright's other books, but there's also a mysterious third point of view!

I especially loved the historical timeline. I could tell good research went into it, along with references shared in the Author's Notes. Did you know a resurrectionist was a grave robber who dug up new graves in order to sell the bodies for science?! There are truly selfish and evil characters in this story!

There's wonderful insight into families, both good and bad relationships. There are loving sibling bonds. Hard family topics covered: alcoholism, autism, dementia. There are underdog heroes and light romance.

Bonus points for this novel: it's set in Indiana (my home state), and there are snippets of poems at the beginning of each chapter, taking me back to my high school days.

I received an early copy of this book from the publisher. Opinions are my own.

Maybe her spookiest tale yet? All I know is my house is not close to 7,000 sq feet, but all I kept picturing was my 100-year-old house with its creepy, all stone basement and coal rooms and wondering what secrets could be in the crawl space below the porch section.
I just love how JJW takes what was meant for evil with all its seemingly unexplainable supernatural elements and then WAM! Light beams in and shows you how that evil is being turned to good because of Jesus.
This book might have had less Christian aspects than her others, but it was no less full of hope for anyone searching. I also loved Grandpa Don. I know the author said he was based on a real family member, so his struggles, and subsequently Tilly's feelings, became that much more poignant too. So not only is this book creepy, it's also relatable and sad. BUT, again, it is also full of hope and family and love.
Overall, another great mystery with well-thought out characters who pull on your heartstrings and have you yelling, "Don't open that door!" because you know you're about to read a jump scare and you just want them to be safe.

Thank you to the author and publisher for my copy! All opinions expressed are my own.
