Si no, solo estás haciendo ruido.”

The Essence of Being Resides in the Shadow (La esencia del ser reside en la sombra) is one of those rare books that doesn’t just arrive in your life — it finds you.
I first stumbled across it in a bookstore on a busy street in Barcelona, in a moment that still felt almost cinematic. The author, Nathalie d’Arc, was scheduled to make her appearance later that week, but I couldn’t stay long enough to meet her. And oddly enough, I couldn’t leave without taking a copy with me. Something in me knew I had to take the book home. It felt like the book chose me, not the other way around.
Weeks later, when I finally opened it, I understood why.
And boy, was I in for a treat. This book speaks to the parts of us that live beneath the surface — the roots, the shadows, the places where healing truly begins. Nathalie writes about the unseen world with a clarity that feels both intimate and unsettling. Her reflections on weaving the terrestrial and spiritual planes — with responsibility, memory, and the invisible systems that connect us (like the underground grid of trees I’d once read about in Braiding Sweetgrass) — felt like gentle reminders of truths I already carried.
It wasn’t just a single chapter that stayed with me; it was her entire self‑discovery journey. The way she researched, questioned, and laid out her understanding using well‑known writers, physicists, and acclaimed authors to support her insights — integrating them into footnotes that quietly build the foundation beneath her story — made the experience even richer.
Her writing is raw, eerie, and deeply human. Nathalie describes many “attacks” with such precision — Claudia, the entity at the foot of the bed, the physical scratch left behind, and so many more — that you feel the thin veil between dream and reality tremble. It’s not written for shock value; it’s written as testimony. As crossing. As warning. And perhaps as an invitation to face our own demons.
This book is not just about the supernatural.
It’s about the emotional and spiritual landscapes we inherit, confront, and eventually transform — and perhaps the beginning of a long journey ahead.
There is no light without darkness.
There is no joy without sadness.
“Is there consciousness behind the gesture?
If not, you’re only making noise.”
How the need to understand can sometimes mean fear of the void.
The essence of being resides in the shadow.
It’s such an appropriate title, and I’ve had to explain it more than once. Even from the first read, I understood that its essence is not about what is hidden to scare us, but what lies hidden because we refuse to see it. And I can’t help but wish I had the opportunity to ask her how she chose the title.
Because energy has no morality — only coherence.
And I’d like to thank her for sparking enough curiosity in me to continue understanding my own self.
