The beloved owner of the wildly popular Sweetie Pie's restaurant, and star of the OWN reality television show Welcome to Sweetie Pie's shares recipes for her renowned soul food and the lessons she's learned on the path to success. Growing up in Mississippi and St. Louis, Robbie Montgomery, the oldest of nine children, was often responsible for putting meals on the family table. Working side by side with her mother in their St. Louis kitchen, Robbie learned to prepare dozens of classic soul food dishes. Now, at seventy-two, Miss Robbie passes down those traditions for generations of fans to enjoy in Sweetie Pie's Cookbook . Robbie takes you into the kitchen to prepare her most favored meals—smothered pork chops, salmon croquettes, baked chicken—and tells you heartfelt and humorous stories, including amazing tales from her life at the restaurant and on the road as a back-up singer. Miss Robbie began her culinary career on the road—in the segregated America of the1960s, finding welcoming restaurants in small cities and towns was often challenging for African-Americans. When a collapsed lung prematurely ended her singing career, Miss Robbie returned to St. Louis, using her formidable cooking talent to open a soul food restaurant that would make her legend. Through her show and this special cookbook, Miss Robbie hopes to maintain the place of soul food cooking—its recipes, history, and legacy—in American culture for decades to come. Sweetie Pie's Cookbook includes 75-100 gorgeous color photos and an Index.
This is the cutest cookbook! I am a beginner so these recipes look simple. I am looking forward to testing out my skills with Miss Robbie's recipes. I am looking forward to making these dishes this upcoming holiday season.
Update: I thoroughly enjoyed the dishes by Miss Robbie. Her recipes don't require too much and the ingredients are not hard to find(well that is what I would expect from a soul food cookbook). I made the cornbread dressing, macaroni and cheese, fried green tomatoes and candied yams for Thanksgiving and my family truly enjoyed it. I am not an experienced cook so for a somewhat beginner the food came out amazing. I will be using more of Sweetie Pie's recipes for any time of the year. Miss Robbie uses plenty of spices and ingredients for her dishes and she does say in the book that she is heavy handed but that just makes for a more flavorful dish. I did scale back on some of the ingredients she uses but just following her directions makes the dish come out great. I hope she comes out with another cookbook
I recieved this book free through goodreads giveaways. This does not influence my review in any way.
Part of being a southern woman means cooking good food for family and friends. At least to me it does, which is why I was so thrilled to get this cookbook. I have the ingredients for so many of these recipes already and that makes it even easier to get started with. The recipes are easy to follow and everything in this book screams comfort food to me. This is definitely a great addition to my cookbook collection. I'm even using the Thanksgiving menu in the back of the book to help me plan my Thanksgiving meal. If you like soulful southern foods but aren't sure how to cook dishes like that, then this is the book for you. Also great for beginner chefs.
This is a fantastic book filled with southern recipes! I'm definitely going to be making a lot of the recipes in the book. I also liked the snippets of information about Robbie's past and present life. I would have liked to see more pictures because I'm a visual person.
The recipes are easy and familiar and thanks to this cookbooks, I have found that the addition of green pepper and onion really ups the deliciousness of a simple recipe. Miss Robbie’s stories are entertaining also.
Having grown up in the South this cookbook contains many of the favorites I grew up with but never learned to make. The chicken an dumplings recipe is fabulous. And I have never seen a gooey butter cake recipe that didn't call for a box cake mix. Thank you for one that is entirely homemade. I have used it successfully in the variations of the gooey butter cake I make - peanut butter or chocolate - and it went over very well. My one criticism is that I never put sugar in my biscuits. Overall I really enjoyed this cookbook.
I received a free copy of this book from Goodreads but my opinions are my own.
I bought this on a special sale, but I would have paid much more if I'd known how great it would be. I was raised on my Big Mama's cooking and learned much watching while standing on a chair. Although I'm not a person of color, I'm definitely Southern and we all have a shared heritage in cooking. If you're interested in this kind of cooking, I highly recommend this book! Great job Sweetie Pie!
Great old fashioned and new recipes that can definitely want to try. This was a truly amazing recipe book that reminded me of my favorite recipes growing up that my grandmother and mother made for my family. I loved the special little bits of love that the author inserted in this book to give the readers a look into her family photos and some interesting recipe tips. I highly recommend this book to read and enjoy.
This is probably the worst cookbook I have ever opened in my life. This lady is so sweet and I loved her show, but I do not love this book. I judge anyone who puts velveeta cheese in their macaroni & cheese recipe. She puts chicken livers in her deviled eggs. I didn’t see anything in this book worth cooking. And not only that, there are not enough images in the book! I hope her restaurant doesn’t follow the recipes in this book because chile...

I have eaten almost everything she put in this book. My grandmother and mother cooked just like her! I am so glad I have the recipes I'm from Texas so we eat all this and love every bite!
I think I gained 5 lbs just reading the recipes. Every one I've tried so far has been fabulous! I can say without reservation one of the top 3 cookbooks I have ever used. I also enjoyed her sharing snipets of her life.
I received this through Goodread giveaways. I did debate on whether to try out a few recipes before my review. But I decided I am to report on the book and not my ability to follow directions. The recipes look easy to follow. There is a large variety and something for everyone. I appreciate all of the personal notations to add that special touch to the dishes. I am eager to start cooking "Sweetie Pie's" way. Also enjoyed the life story tidbits scattered throughout. Here's to cooking soulful Southern recipes.
I received this book as a First Reads giveaway. I was so excited to receive this book because I have been in such a mood to cook. I started flipping through pages and found so many things I wanted to make that I started my grocery list right away. So far, the recipes look simple to follow and delicious! Can't wait to try some!
Great cookbook for beginners and seasoned cooks alike. The recipes are easy to follow and allows you to make adjustments to fit your liking. I use this cookbook ALL OF THE TIME! I'm not exaggerating!
Thank You Goodreads for a wonderful cookbook. Haven't made any of the recipes yet, but I certainly intend to. I might start with the chili. The recipes are easy to read, the photos are delightful and make my mouth water. This is a really nice book to add to my cookbook collection.
