5 Sterne

Lieblingskapitelbilder: Kapitel 20, Kapitel 21, Kapitel 22.

This volume is a lot about Fynn's past - poor Fynn - and the story is slowly moving on. Chiaki and Marron get to a new point in their relationship ;)

I love the whole series but this might be my favourite book. The plot twist is still heartbreaking, even after many re-reads.

I didn't like finding out that Finn was really a scheming, manipulative, hating little brat. That revelation tore me up inside. But, I did enjoy Finn's backstory, perhaps even more than I thought I would. And, I adored the side story, where Access used the Saint Lovers' Flower to cause Finn to fall in love with him, then told her off in the end.
Now that I'm getting down to the final volumes of this series, it seems like it's getting alot more personal. Not just for Maron, but for everyone.

And from here it started to get really interesting :)

I grew up with the Anime and never really read the Mangas before and up to this Manga I was entertained but not thrilled. I enjoyed the Anime more (and it's still great). But starting with this Manga the whole thing started to get more dimension, got deeper into detail than the Anime. Fynns story was really interesting. I liked her in the Anime but it was better here.

Review for complete series

Although seemingly an ordinary girl, Maron lives a double life in which she goes out at night disguised as thief Jeanne to steal paintings. But Jeanne doesn't steal just any paintings - as the reincarnation of Joan of Arc, she only has her eyes set on paintings concealing demons sent by the devil. But it isn't long before the devil sends more than just demons to get in Jeanne's way - the thief Sinbad isn't far behind to try and steal the paintings from right under her nose.

Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne was my first manga and therefore holds an unshakeable place in my heart. I remember the times I watched it on TV, not really knowing what manga or anime was, and just utterly falling in love with Jeanne's violet eyes. It was only by chance that I came across the manga in a bookstore - that was the beginning of my manga collection which now, a decade later, would put most libraries to shame.

Of course, the biased and nostalgic me would say this is the greatest manga out there and it is absolutely flawless. Yet I also believe that there is no such thing as a flawless work. Reading it now is different from reading it years ago, but it is no less enjoyable. It stands out from other magical girl series in many ways!

For one thing, Maron and Jeanne look completely different - it always irks me how most magical girls are never recognized by other characters despite the obvious. Unfortunately, Sinbad can't boast the same, but at least he's got a mask and is found out quite early in the story. The concept of Joan of Arc's reincarnation, the demon-infested paintings, and the character's motivations strike me as much more plausible.

Tanemura's art style has always been a major point in her works - provided you like typical shoujo style. Fortunately, I've always liked the shoujo style and I think Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne is showing the author at her best. Although it isn't as refined as her later works, it has the most heart. The characters are adorable, believable and they feel. You can easily see Tanemura pouring her heart into this series while, in more recent ones, I always feel like she is just trying too hard.

The same holds true for the comedy. The humour in her older works has always been a major plus point for me. It is often very simple - just in the expressions characters make. I could never decide what I liked most about this series; the humour, the art, the characters, the emotion. Not to mention that this series also draws a heavy focus on friendship and family. Even side characters get their moments to shine.

Like any other serires, Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne has its weak points and it won't be everyone's cup of tea. Yet I can't find it in my heart to point them out as I hold this series so dear, whatever flaws it holds now come to me as adorable absurdities.

Re-Read

I love this cover so much! It’s my favorite cover! It’s so beautiful and it’s rules all the other covers! Can you hear me scream in fangirl?

Yeah. Collecting myself here.

This volume is the one I would call "shit goes down." Because really, holy plot twist Batman!

Since I watched the Anime first, it was my first introduction to Finn‘s big betrayal. But as devastating as it was in the Anime, the Manga adds a whole new dimension with the backstory. I don’t remember exactly what the Anime did, I think they portrayed Finn as being manipulated by the devil or something, but the intensity of this backstory is just so much better and incredibly heartbreaking. It also begs the question, something surprisingly no one asks, if it was really fair to ban Finn for an accident. It’s not like she murdered people on purpose, but whatever.

The backstory also adds more development to Access, aka the best character in the whole series.

Going back to the beginning it’s interesting to see how this twist was set up. While I don’t think that everything makes sense in retrospective (Access and Finn‘s behavior towards each other doesn’t always fit with the indication she was a villain all along) there are some strong points here. Especially Finn trying so hard to convince Maron that Chiaki and Access are working for the devil, when there was never indication towards it, her trying to sabotage the blossoming relationship and especially Access‘s refusal to explain Chiaki why they go up against Jeanne.

The romance between Maron and Chiaki takes really off in this volume. It’s so beautiful and sweet and I feel like a teenager again reading it.

It’s a fantastic volume that definitely comes with the most interesting storyline of the series.

Art - ★★★★★

Volume - Enjoyable. Cute. Entertaining. Emotional.

"Manga is an unusual medium (as is anything meant for entertainment). You read it casually, and you can throw it away casually. Or it can move you, make you feel, and change the way you think. It can enrich your life... it depends on you." - Arina Tanemura.

This is a good series, even if it has a push-and-go relationship; it is nice to see the character's growth and how their relationship develops. There are a lot of obstacles the characters have to go through in the fantasy that is this story. A lot of it is intertwined with religious figures and beliefs, but at its core, it is a story of friendship and relationships and how one tries to push through, and sometime's it's okay to need help.

Huwaaaaah!

*4.5*

My jaw is still on the floor! So many twists and turns, even when I think I have a grasp on the story, and what's to come, the rug is pulled from beneath me yet again.

We finally get some backstory on Fin, who she was, and what led her to work with Maron. It's quite sad actually, ny heart goes out to her. The whole thing reminded me a lot of a certain plot thread in Full Moon, I guess Miss Tanemura has a specific type of plot she likes for secondary female characters haha.

The ending didn't let up either, and I need to know immediately what's going on there, but I have to wait for my friend (who I'm buddy reading this with) to catch up lol.

When Chiaki tells Maron that Finn is actually an agent of Satan, she runs home to find out that it's true: Finn is working for the prince of darkness. Abandoned by her closest friend, Chiaki comforts her and Access tells the story of how Finn came to be a fallen angel. I love this backstory. I'm not even 100% sure why - it's cliche and full of tropes - but something about that story makes me want to read it over and over again. That backstory made reading the entire series worth it for me.

Beginning a little in the previous volume, but mostly in this one, the emotions become stronger and more real; the reader becomes emotionally involved in a way he or she never was earlier in the series. For this, it almost seems like I'm reading a different series - in a good way. Though still consistent with its tropes and cliches, the Finn/Access backstory shows that despite her siding with the bad guy, Finn isn't totally evil; these gradations and shades of gray keep the series strong. Maron suggests that she's just using Chiaki. All of this adds up to this volume being far more compelling than earlier ones. The art, of course, is still gorgeous.

One thing I kept wondering: if Chiaki has known for a while that Finn was evil, why didn't he tell Maron? Yes, he was trying to protect her, but really, wouldn't it better to tell Maron now that she's actually doing evil deeds? Wouldn't it hurt her more to know she's been helping the devil? This is one of those situations when Chiaki keeping his mouth shut didn't make any sense (it actually seems a bit contrived).

Chiaki has fallen fully in love with Maron and finally sticks to his promise to her when he swore that he would keep no more secrets from her. Wanting her to know the truth, he tells her the information he found out from Access about Finn. But when Chiaki tells Maron, it shatters her entire world and she loses her holy powers..! Will Maron or Jeanne ever recover?

I loved this volume. Maron is so sad. This kind of series is really at my reading level, so this makes me feel very inferior to my age group and especially to my boyfriend... I don't deserve that boy at all, I swear... But because this book is at my reading level it allows me to enjoy it quite a bit more than if I was anywhere else.

haha What a surprise! It kind of proved my dunce-d theory right... I'm happy this the series hasn't deteriorated, but I guess that's the advantage to shorter series. (although Gravitation wasn't that long and look what happened to it. 8/)

You get a lot back story about Finn and Access in this volume, which is great. It's definitely a slightly different than the direction the anime chose to go, and I like it better. There is a really delightful side story about Access tacked on at the end of the volume too. He is such an adorable character, I can't help rooting for him.
