Okay, first off I want to think Kara for the ability to read this early with my ebook ARC copy! This isn’t a spoiler free review, sorry, but I just can’t see how to do that without talking about major aspects of the book. But first, while I did re-read book 1, Cursed Coven, before reading the ARC, I didn’t even really need to. I felt like this book picked up perfectly well from where the first one ended off at.

Now… it was painful to read Octavia hating herself throughout the book, but also loving her magic (even when she shouldn’t). The first half of the book is where the coven is trying to figure out how to help Octavia control her magic. They even enlist in the help of other covens, and it seems to be that they were able to find a way to help her control it. Getting to read Octavia truly happy again was great because it showed me how things could be with them. Hell, they even were able to bring other covens together (which is unheard of due to safety reasons). All Octavia wants to do is protect her family, be better than Gwynn and just as good as her grandmother. And it seems like it could happen until the seal for her magic starts to fail.

Leif has his own battles as well… he has to deal with being able that his power is strengthening but also hating the self-resentment that Octavia has at the beginning of the book. The great thing about Leif, is that you never once question if he still loves Octavia. He never gives you a reason to. That’s why when Octavia finally has her magic in control, they are the happiest we have seen them in both books. As I said, Leif is also having to deal with the fact that his mother is the reason all of this happened. If it wasn’t for her and her need of power, things would’ve been different. Even once Octavia’s seal is failing, Leif doesn’t give up on her.

Final part of the book had me BITING my nails! Knowing that the witch hunters have a witch on their side was a knife to the gut… and I do think I have an idea on who it could be… but I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m wrong. The final fight scene was devastating! Jocasta and Luna dying… I knew it was probably going to happen and that would’ve been the final straw for Octavia. There were two people she cared the most about… and so when Jo died, Octavia killed them all! (Well Leif ended Garren…) Now those last couple of pages have me wondering a few things- How will Octavia come back from this? Who is Adrian and how does he know Octavia like an old friend? What did Octavia see when she was finally able to read the redacted grimoires? Did Emery know that was going to happen? Did Octavia actually fail or did it look like she was supposed to fail? Why did Octavia kill Landon? How will her coven forgive her? Especially Sage? What will Leif do with the fact that Octavia left with Adrian? Who will protect the Salem coven? And I’m sure I have many more questions!

I read CURSED COVEN three years ago and have been so impatiently waiting for the next installment. Octavia and Leif are back with more magic, higher stakes, and new allies. I really loved how supportive Leif was throughout this entire book. He loves Tavi so much. Octavia has a journey to go through as she figures out her magic. I love the glimpses we saw of her being herself, but this one focuses on the mental gymnastics of her internal struggle to get a handle on her magic.

Urban fantasy and witches are two of my favorite things and this one brings those two things together in the best way.

*ARC Review*

Picked up where the first book finished, so it's a must to read these wonderful books in order.
Magic, found family, romance and action, this is a must read for everyone.
The story continues to enthral with twists and turns, more questions and the slow unravelling of answers that keep you reading.
Octavia and Leif face some inner turmoil and question how they will get through the choices that need to be made, but knowing they have each other is a small solace. The covens bonds are tested, and prove that chosen family may be more important than you realise.
Absolutely captivating, I could not put it down.

This book picked up where the first one left off. Octavia got something back she desperately wanted but not everything is as it seems. With the help of her family and Leif she tries to figure out how to fix things but has some struggles along the way and ultimately tries to fix everything on her own. Only question is how will everything end 👀

I DESPERATELY need the third book now 😭
