Big thank you to the author for sending me this ARC to check out. Bohemian Sledgehammer is Alex Naylor's debut novel, and shows some big promise for a short book!

The book tells the story of Briar, a man who has come to Appalachia to study a cryptic religious group buried deep in mountains that are suffering from blight and rot. There is an air of mystery about the town, its people, and its religion. As events unfold and the truth is revealed, we go on a tense, building ride that leaves you questioning everything and everyone.

Set in Appalachia and with eldritch horror elements, this book gave me big time Midsommar vibes, if Midsommar were steeped in Appalachian history and folklore. Fans of religious or cult-based horror will also find some really satisfying elements here to enjoy. The author does a great job setting the tone early and building the tension slowly. We have some really scary moments, and the wrap up and revelations were great.

This is really impressive for a debut novel. I thought the writing was really good, the world felt well fleshed out and lived in, and the characters were all intriguing. My only real complaint is, unlike most modern horror novels, I kind of wanted more backstory and more time in the world! A lot of modern horror gets hung up on bloated backstory and overly done themes, but Bohemian Sledgehammer gets to the point, and hits you with it all in a snappy read.

Overall if you are a fan of Appalachian horror, folklore based horror, eldritch/crpytid horror, religious/cult based horror, or just a fresh snappy horror novel, then you should definitely check this one out!

The author was kind enough to gift me a copy of his debut novel BOHEMIAN SLEDGEHAMMER. I just finished it this morning, so I thought I’d give a lil review.

(This book helped me get out of a reading slump, so already that endears me to it greatly.)

We meet our main character, Briar, as he is entering the small town of Haybone at the foot of the Appalachian mountains. High above lies Dorcha Cove, a secluded compound that houses a mysterious religious group that Briar has come with the intent to learn their unique theology. He is warned against it from the moment he arrives in Haybone, though no one will give him a true answer as to why, and he goes anyway.

The mountain path is treacherous, even with a guide, and a horrific blight is infecting the surrounding forestry and wildlife. When we reach Dorcha Cove everything starts to slowly unravel, and I was hooked. I wanted to know more with every chapter. I loved the inclusion of local folklore into the narrative, and the characters themselves were engaging, (I really loved Briar, Holt, and Corena!), as was the plot itself, the unfolding truth of this cult, their god, and the sickness that has overtaken the mountain.

All in all, I think this was a really good debut, and Naylor shows a lot of promise as a writer and I am beyond excited to see what he’ll write next.

This book also introduced me to squonks. Which. Ew. (positive)

I absolutely loved the quiet and dark atmosphere of this book! This folk horror is stunning, it keeps you turning those pages as you keep uncovering the horrors of Dorcha.

I loved how it was written, the characters came to life out from the pages! You can really imagine it all in your head so clearly.

The slight twist of fantasy was amazing, I love cryptids and to see a few crop up within the pages was lovely, especially as it was left to the readers discretion if they viewed them as real or as a figment of imagination for some of creatures.

The Appalachian mountains hold a lot of folklore and mystery, and this book just highlights the horror that can come of a myth…. And that maybe the real monsters.. aren’t always inhuman…

Cult atmosphere mixed with secrets of Appalachia.
It took me on such a journey of twist and turns i didn't expect and it kept me hooked from the first chapter.

In the beginning i wasn’t quite sure where the book was going. But after the first few chapters, when you have been introduced to Briar and what he’s gonna do. You get more interested. He goes to this small town which gives cult vibes. And when was there I was hooked. There where twist and turns. Amazing debut

Not my usual read, but didn't care about preferences pretty quick into this one. It became clear early that the writing alone was enough to demand my attention, before even contemplating the subtle yet loud themes of the narrative, and twisty intentions of the characters. All of which assisted in building tension progressivly before bringing home a conclusion that left me feeling a little guilty for being so morbidly satisfying. Absolutely, give this one a go.
