When Joshua Chandler identifies the hacker attempting to infiltrate his security software, he becomes a target for assassination. A genius, contracted to safeguard government secrets, he concludes a lot of people could see him as a threat. Various government agencies vie to protect him, but he prefers to hire his own bodyguard. When he falls in love with her, he has only one choice. Catch his assassin, so he can focus on winning her. Catriana Duplessiss, (Cat) hired to protect Josh, remains professional and distant in order to do her job. An ex-marine, she’s well trained to keep him safe, but pretending to be his live-in-lover tests her rule “never get involved with a principal”. She’s lost too many loved ones to death and refuses to risk her heart again. When her feelings for Josh affect her ability to do her job, she insists on being replaced, so he has the best protection possible. It also allows her to run, but she can’t hide from the truth. She’s lost her heart to this brilliant man whose death seems imminent. Both the assassin and Cat elude Josh’s efforts to capture them. He doesn’t know which is the greater threat losing his life or losing his love.

I enjoyed this romantic suspense story. There are a few areas I would have liked more information on but those looking for an adult romance with a buildup to a thriller will be happy.

A US government computer security analyst (who works out and lives in a fine house with Zen garden) gets on the wrong side of a hacker who is also in the US. The FBI believes he may be under threat and a female bodyguard is assigned to look after him. Normally a close protection officer will be one of two or three rotating duties over the 24 hours, and a man would seem useful for the times when the person under threat might need to use a restroom. So I am not sure why only one person was assigned, or why she agreed to run a solo operation pretending to be the man's girlfriend. As an ex soldier she's tough and steady, and she's also used to protecting the wives of the wealthy. The two get to know each other and have to live in close quarters as the analyst keeps working, until the menace develops. Then the girl takes the man off to a remote cabin where a scene very much like that in The Bodyguard occurs. Me, I'd have taken him to Quantico. Wouldn't you?

The hacking depictions are skimpy and the brief discussion between two experts late in the book, boils down to jargon, quantum, jargon, quantum. So no marks I'm afraid. Readers could understand well provided content and might prefer it to stretched out episodes of sexual tension. Those looking for an account of hacking and protecting against hacking in a thriller should try Swiftshadow by DS Kane or Intrusion by Reece Hirsch.

High Ground is an adult romance suspense which simmers for a while before boiling into action. There are frequent references to an earlier book about mountaineering which I had not read. However it stands well alone.
