Dear Bishop

DEAR BISHOP, a new audio original written and read by former professional football player and television personality, COLTON UNDERWOOD.

Throughout his life, Colton was chasing perfection. He wanted to be the most decorated student athlete. The best professional football player. The beloved lead on The Bachelor. But even as he found success, he knew in his heart that he wasn’t being honest with himself. When Colton finally found his way to living openly as a gay man, he knew that his journey was not about following his ambition. It was a search for self-love and acceptance.

Last fall, Colton and his husband welcomed home their son, Bishop, and their lives were forever changed. Nobody could have warned Colton about the new kind of love that filled their home. It was instant and all-encompassing, built on the foundation of self-love that Colton cultivated for himself as he worked through his own obstacles.

As Bishop approaches a year old, Colton wants to reflect on this experience of new fatherhood in the form of DEAR BISHOP, an audio letter about his son’s first year of life and the path that led him there. From football to fame. Dating shows and diapers. DEAR BISHOP is not only a deeply emotional account of Colton’s life, but a tribute to the universal message that love makes a family. While the piece is incredibly personal, Colton aims to reach parents within the LGBTQ+ community through his story that expands the typical narrative surrounding parenthood.

I used to be a big fan of The Bachelor and watched Colton’s journey to try to find love unfold on TV. He seemed like such a nice and genuine guy, until more developments revealed some issues with how he treated women (especially Cassie.) I haven’t followed his story closely, but know enough from social media and publicity updates to know that he came out as gay and had gotten married.
This short audiobook was recently released and came across my book suggestions so I thought I’d give it a try. It’s interesting to me to hear about the real lives of people that I’ve watched on scripted or ‘reality’ shows. I kind of wanted to hear how Colton might explain his journey and what he’d find as the most important things to say to his son.
This book is a letter to his young son on his 1st birthday. The introduction was maybe the best part as an actual letter to his son. The rest of it felt more autobiographical, sometimes addressing his son but giving more details and info about some aspects of his life. It’s short, so it kind of skims the surface.
It’s mostly sweet. I like that he’s trying to communicate love and acceptance to his son. I don’t always appreciate the way Colton speaks about himself, often glossing over issues and not taking responsibility for his actions. But this little book isn’t the place for full disclosure. Overall this didn’t feel fully like just a letter to his child or a full autobiography. It’s just Colton saying some stuff he wanted to communicate and sell publicly. So it’s ok. Definitely for a limited audience of Bach fans who watched him on TV, and probably people who are more recently interested in his path to fatherhood in a same sex marriage. Not my usual genre. But I continue to wish him happiness.

Dear Bishop: A Letter to My Son is a truly special book that radiates love, intention, and hope.

I appreciated the ownership Colton takes over certain parts of his story. Of course, there are other aspects of his past where I personally wish there had been more reflection and accountability—but that’s not the purpose of this book. This isn’t a memoir or a comprehensive retelling of his life. It’s a heartfelt journey of healing and a beautiful letter from a father to his son.

I don’t know if I’ll ever have children of my own, but reading this gave me a glimpse of the kind of love, vulnerability, and presence that parenthood can be. More than anything, I found myself smiling through much of the book because you can genuinely feel how happy Colton is today. For someone who spent so many years carrying shame and fear, seeing him find peace and joy is a beautiful thing.

Whether you’re a parent, hope to become one someday, or simply enjoy stories about growth and healing, this is a meaningful read.

Very sweet and earnest. He clearly loves his family and his son. That said, the way in which he seems to completely let himself off the hook for the very real harm he inflicted on Cassie such that it doesn’t even warrant a passing mention is fucked up, so I can’t give it more than two stars.

Having watched the Netflix documentary it was a nice ‘closure’. More about him and his struggles than his son but at a year old, what’s to say?!

Beautiful, moving memoir! I loved how Colton wrote it as a letter to his son, Bishop. I loved listening to every single word. I loved every second of this audiobook. Highly highly recommend!
