Alma has spent years perfecting her mask.

Sweet, Innocent, Liar.

She can fool everyone but me.

I never liked the good girls anyways.

I hated who she pretended to be.

The person that lured my brother in with her innocence,

But I’ve seen her dark side.

Seen the void in her eyes the night she stood there covered in his blood.

I thought the years I spent in prison would make me forget her,

But I thought wrong.

She was always meant to be 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘦.

In the shadows of Calavera Hotel, lust turns dangerous and the truth will damn them both.
Because when the masks fall…
What’s left behind is raw.
And some truths were never meant to stay buried.
Are you ready to get Exposed?

Nix Murguia is a dark contemporary romance author. She resides in Boise, Idaho with her husband and three sons. As a young Chicana growing up in the 90s her grandfather introduced her to various movies that would help her connect with her culture and embrace her identity.
It was in the 1987 movie La Bamba that Nix realized the bad boy was much more attractive. The Bobs, the Miklos, and Chuchos. Her love for the anti-hero, morally grey alpha male bled into the books she read.
She uses her love for story telling and writing to create diverse characters that Latina women can relate to and love. Morally grey men that say “Mija.” And “Te quiero.” And the strong women who would be their only weakness.

‎A very tragic story: the author promised me a femdom awakening story.

‎I waited for the femdom awakening until 50%.

‎I didn’t get the femdom awakening.

‎I’m sad.

‎Like I said, I gave this book a chance until chapter 23/43. That’s around half of it. My problem with Exposed started early, when Spanish words were thrown in randomly without translation. It had me constantly used translator and it was exhausting. Please, PLEASE, I’m begging authors who slip non English words into their books to consider readers who don’t understand them. It won’t make you look less smart. It’s not even about being lazy. It just reduces the fun when I have to keep pulling myself out of the story in the middle of reading. Especially since English is already my second language.

‎Second, the author said this book could be read as a standalone.

‎It can’t.

‎There are so many characters and established relationships that are only briefly explained. As a new reader, I was expected to just go along with it. To make it worse, there are a LOT of nicknames. I felt like I was at a party where everyone knew each other and I was the only stranger. And before anyone comes at me for not reading the previous books, I did ask about it on the author’s fb page. She only liked my comment. Oh well ....

‎Third, I hate the love interest.

‎Don’t get me wrong, I usually like psycho characters. Bratty ones? Even better. Efren had the potential to be the perfect mix, but he was written so poorly that he leans more toward asshole. He’s instantly obsessed with Alma, but without any clear motive. It’s just another case of “because she’s different”. Honestly, I believe Efren wanted Alma mostly because she was his brother’s gf and they had some kind of sibling rivalry.

‎Alma also pissed me off. She’s definitely the kind of girl who would write letters to prisoners just because they look hot. I can’t believe she feels safe with Efren after everything he’s done (violating her boundaries, stalking her) just because he cooked for her once. Seriously, Alma. Maybe you should date your local kebab merchant.

‎As far as I read, there were three smut scenes, and two of them involved him forcing himself on Alma with dubious consent. The first one was so uncomfortable that I should have DNF’d the book right there. But it ended in an interesting way, so I pushed myself to continue. I saw a spark of something in Alma.

‎And then the spark died.

‎Alma just lets Efren dominate her again, which leads me to the big question:

‎WHERE’S the power exchange?

‎I understand that a femdom awakening isn’t something that happens instantly. Women don’t usually wake up and think, hmmz ... I want to peg my bf today. But this took way TOO long. I kept waiting and waiting until their third scene, where Alma finally took some control ... Only for it to switch back to Efren again. And once again, this is already 50% into the book.

‎I’m sorry, but I’m tired. I’m starving and the author only fed me scraps while she keeps the main dish just out of reach.

‎I feel like I was given false hope. If femdom isn’t actually a core theme in your book, if it’s only lightly explored, then maybe don’t include it in the promotion. So people won’t get their hopes up.

‎It’s already hard to find a decent femdom book with a real plot instead of pure erotica.

*ARC Review* (Thank you Nix!)

Now that I've had a few days to process this book, I wanted to update my review.
Nix is really able to write these stories in a way that is addicting. You cannot put any of her books down. I read this book in one day!

I wasn't expecting Alma's story to be what it was. She was the quiet friend, the good girl, in the other books, but here she is, living a double life as a midnight ballerina! She never thought he would find her again after *that night*, but he did. Both Alma and Efren have a very heartbreaking back story and that seemed to help them fully understand each other. I love that Efren is so comfortable with himself that he lets Alma do what she needs/wants in order to really explore herself. He also seems to be very in tune with her and how she needs to process her thoughts/feelings. Love that for her!

This can be read as a standalone, but I recommend reading the series in order to fully understand the other characters and how Alma was perceived by her friends. There are also a lot of dark topics in this book, so please check your trigger warnings.

If you’re a Dark Romance girly, you will eat this series up! This is the 4th book in the series and I’ve loved every single one.

I really appreciated the family tree at the beginning because I this point in the series were introduced to several different families. It helped me recall the previous books.

Nix always does a great job with banter that gives some levity to otherwise very emotionally heavy topics in the book. It’s a great balance that kept me totally sucked in to the story. Theres a scene in a mansion that is especially hilarious and almost gives Scooby doo vibes.

Although I didn’t personally connect with Efren and Alma’s characters, I still really enjoyed their story. It’s definitely a tragic story. I don’t really think it’s a love story, but a story of discovery, obsession, and codependency. Which I didn’t know was a trope I enjoyed until this book because, DAMN🥵!

All in all. It was Picasso🤌🏻 IYKYK!

I stayed up until the crack of dawn to finish this and have zero regrets.

The FMC, Alma lives true to the phrase “it’s ALWAYS the quiet ones” and somebody needs to match her freak - enter Efren, her ex-lovers brother, and things escalate quickly.

It’s hot as hell and the last few chapters had my heart palpitating! I also loved that these characters spoke Spanish, and nothing was watered down.

While this can be read as a standalone, the calamity and drama of The Calavera Hotel clan is unmatched! I suggest reading the series.

Exposed can be read as a standalone, but if you really want to appreciate the world of Calavera Hotels and its complex characters, I definitely recommend starting with the previous books in the series.

The story begins with Esteban’s death and slowly unravels how Alma and Efren are connected. Nix does an incredible job weaving a dual timeline that keeps you constantly questioning what really happened. Every chapter had me trying to piece together the truth.

Efren is the type of character you kind of hate at first but as the story unfolds and you learn about his past, it becomes impossible not to love him.. Alma has always been a bit of a mystery. In the previous books, she was the quiet friend—the good girl who stayed in the background. But in this story, she’s done holding back. Alma is determined to uncover the truth, no matter what it takes.

Both Alma and Efren carry deeply heartbreaking pasts, and that shared pain helps them truly understand one another. I loved how secure Efren is in himself and how he gives Alma the freedom and space to discover who she is. He’s also incredibly in tune with her emotions, always understanding when she needs time to process everything she’s feeling.

The Calavera Hotels series just keeps getting better and better, and now I’m already impatiently waiting for the next book.

ARC Review:

Girl, I finished this in less than 24 hours! I was hooked from the very first chapter. 🤭

I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’ll keep it vague, but I absolutely loved this couple. We met Alma in book one, but we never really got to know her. In this book we finally see her on a much deeper level, and let me tell you… I loved it. Her confidence and the way she explores and fully embraces her desires? Yes please! 👏

And Efron… uff girl. Un hombre que cocina and lets you use him however you want? Say less. 🥵

The dynamic between them was everything. The tension, the passion, the emotions it had me going from 😵 to 😲 to 🥵 to 🥰 the entire time.

But what really had me with my mouth open was that we also get a little murder mystery and some identity twists mixed in. When things started getting revealed I was literally like… wait WHAT?! 😲

I also absolutely love how the author incorporates Chicano representation and Spanish throughout the story. Being able to connect through the language and understand the dichos that are commonly used just makes the story feel so much more real. Girl, that always makes the book 10x better for me!

If you love a powerful FMC who knows what she wants, a man who is completely obsessed, a little femdom energy, and some suspense in the mix… buckle up amiga, because this one is a ride.

I wish I could say more, but I refuse to spoil anything. Just trust me and add it to your TBR.

4.5 STARS 🌩️!

Exposed by Nix Murguia is the fourth book in the Calavera Hotels series. It's a tangled web of secrets, mystery, and drama!!

The story begins in the past. Alma and Efren are both in high school. Esteban, her boyfriend and Efren's brother, is dead. Who did it? This is the moment that ultimately ties them together. As the story progresses, truths begin to unravel.

I loved Efren. He's someone who knows what he wants and isn't afraid to go after it. He's so down bad and we like it. He wasn't afraid to push Alma to her limits.

We don't know much about Alma, just that she's Mireya and Thalia's friend. Quiet and a bookworm. But we learn she has a painful past. She's looking for answers about where she came from and she will stop at nothing until she knows the truth.

Alma and Efren both share heartbreaking pasts. There's obsession, passion, and intrigue. They're kinda of toxic for each other but it works. They share a deeper connection! It was chef's kiss delicious 🤌🏼.

This series is a thrill! It keeps you at the edge of your seat. With each book so much comes to light. There's more to come and I cannot wait for it 👏🏼.

Thank you Nix and Team for the e-ARC copy ✨

EXPOSED REVIEW

I absolutely loved this! After reading the whole series and Patron Saint of Pendejas. This book topped it all for me. Seeing the growth not only from the author but the story itself has been amazing.

I grew up in Arizona surrounded by the Chicano culture and there are so many moments in the series that just warms my heart. The way Nix presents her stories, her characters and the awareness behind them is so special.

The emotional connection between Alma and Efren was everything. Not to mention the comedic sections that lightened up some of the heavier moments, I adored these so greatly.

“Every day feels like I’m on the edge of having my very own Selena moment. The one where she bitch slaps Chris for trashing the hotel room.”

The exploration of kink and the connection between them being comfortable in their sexuality’s. HOT. PLUS THE SPICE. Let me just say pink ski masks will be living rent free in my head going forward. ✨

Overall this book was an amazing read, it will pull you out of a slump I promise you! I appreciate the ARC and I look forward to see where Nix takes us when it comes to G’s story

Talk about mind blown when I read this book! The mystery surrounding Alma and Efren’s family history had me constantly turning the pages. Every time I thought I had things figured out, another secret would come to light.

Alma was definitely not what I expected. In the other books in the series she comes across as so sweet and innocent, but baaaaaby… this book proves she is anything but! They always say you have to watch out for the quiet ones, and Alma is the perfect example of that.

And Efren? Let’s just say he had a kink that had my jaw on the floor. I was not prepared. All I’m going to say is Chapter 38… whew. That scene will be living rent-free in my head for a very long time.

This story honestly reads like a telenovela in the best way possible. The family secrets, the drama, the twists it had me gasping more than once. And the spicy scenes? Let’s just say they’ll have you clutching your pearls.

I truly can’t get enough of this series, and I already hate that we have to wait until 2027 to get more!

***ADVANCED COPY REVIEW***

Looks are deceiving baby! So of course everyone assumes that Alma is a sweet innocent baby. Whole time she is just a woman who needs her man to give her a safe space to explore!

Efren clearly only has eyes for Alma and would take on the entire world to make her safe and happy.

Exposed takes us on a layered ride, as we learn who Efren and Alma are in present day and who they were back then, even if they themselves are unsure of who that was.

Exposed is HOT baby and will keep you reading late into the evening, heart pounding and anxious.

I love seeing our old favorites make their cameos as they rally around Alma and Efren. We also get a slight cliffhanger for the next couple’s book while still tying up Alma and Efren’s hot as sin HEA.

I cannot wait to get Genesis and Cassiel’s book in 2027. I think it’s one I’ve been most looking forward since getting my Queen Thalia’s story.

This one. I was not ready for Alma. First, I loved being back at the Calavera Hotel. This is book 4. Can be read as a standalone, but you’d be missing out if you didn’t read the others.

Alma is the quiet one of the group. So we thought. She is finding herself. And I am here for it. She really wants to find out who she is and where she came from. So she finds herself working at the Calavera Hotel and the local strip club.

While working at the strip club, in walks her ex-boyfriend’s brother, Efren. You know the ex-boyfriend that Efren killed. When Efren sees Alma, he’s like, yea you’re mine.

So many lies, and twists. We get to see the found family. New family, and a blast from the past, Isabel and Manny from the Patron Saint of Pendejas.

I loved every moment of this. The Spanglish. The spice. The tension. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next one.

Exposed is the 4th book in the Calavera Hotel Series and I personally think you need to read books 1-3 to really appreciate this book. That being said if you enjoy Latinos being in the spotlight and our culture represented through telenovela worthy drama, having crushes on the cholitos our moms told us we’re not allowed to be around and the best spice this series is for you!

I loved Efren and his crazy ass ways! He represents all the middle school crushes I had on the boys who wore their pro clubs and 501’s 🥵 the way he not only allowed Alma to explore and be who she is but how he made sure she felt safe in that space is the reason why I’m rating this 5 stars.

The spice in this one?!?? It’s hot af and if you like a little power exchange you’re gonna love this one.

Thank you Nix for writing for the brown girls, love you for lyfeeee 🤎

Calavera Hotels book 4 “ Exposed “
By author @Haunt Girl Nix
5/5 ⭐️

I am a mood reader and the only challenge I had was putting this ARC down. I wanted to binge read it yesterday but today I was able to finish it.

I love the Chicano representation.
Adrian and Mirella from book one “ Punished “ were interconnected in this book which I enjoyed very much.
I have not read books 2 & 3!

This could be read as a standalone book so if you haven’t read the previous books, don’t worry this book doesn’t have any loopholes. The character development and plot is well written so it’s easy to understand.

I love the spice !!!
Efren and Alma have this dark sexual chemistry that takes you for a wild ride!!! Check your TW !!!

Recommend for all my dark romance lovers that love a great story….

The aggressive connection in this. I absolutely LOVED this one. Efren. Obsessed. Claimed the beautiful Alma way back when they were kids. His need for her and his claim to her and the way he just had to protect her was so good. His entire way about him was everything. Then Alma, sweet, naughty naughty Alma... She is now part of my spirit as much as Thalia. I loved her. She had to find out her past but she stuck very confident in what she had already done with herself. I loved that about her. And the love/hate these two had was perfection. Also. Nix. Fricken puts the best little things that make you die laughing. I love the personality she gives everyone of her characters. and then THE BACHELORETTE PARTY.. GIRLLLLL. Phew. You nailed it. The whole thing. A+, 10/10.

Exposed is the fourth installment in the Calavera Hotels series and its just getting better and better!!

Instantly, you will be pulled into the world of darkness and danger. This time around, we are following Efren and Alma's story. Traumatic, twisted and heart-wrenching. Efren and Alma are delicious perfection.

Nix is a must read author for me, and her Hotel Calavera series is a definite must read! Highly recommend!

Be sure to check the trigger warnings before diving in. This book is not for the faint-hearted. Your mental health matters.

This book was fantastic, Nix knows how to capture sexy, deep, exiting stories that will take you on an adventure. Each book in the series gets spicer and spicer but the main thing that I love about this series is learning and watching the relationships and connections of the characters. I don't think I will ever get enough of this series, it is easily bingable and well written.
Thank you again for a arc copy of this amazing story.

Efren is the kind of guy you hate to love in the beginning of the book, but towards the middle, you learn why he is the way he is and love him to death. Efren and Alma have my whole heart in this book. I knew their story was going to be a lot, but Nix is really trying to pull some new emotions out of me with this one.

I loved stepping back into the Consuelo family drama. When I found out this was going to be Alma and Efren’s story, I was unsure how it would play out, but Nix definitely did not disappoint. Once again, she had me hooked from the very first chapter. Since I had read Silent Night and it mentioned Alma and Efren, I was really interested to see what led up to that point in their story.

Since Alma was always portrayed as the quiet, good friend, I loved getting to see the side of her she had been hiding. As for Efren, learning more about his backstory helped me better understand why he and Adrian are so close.

While it is said that this book can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend reading the other books in the series first since the first half references events from the previous stories. As always, this book touches on some darker topics, so be sure to check the trigger warnings before reading.
