This book follows the author's familiar formula, opening with a murder before launching into the investigation. It's a style that works well and immediately draws you into the story.
The protagonist was generally likeable, but I found her interactions with her partner a little immature. He came across as the more experienced and professional of the two, and at times their dynamic felt more like father and daughter than equal colleagues. One moment she seemed like a giddy schoolgirl, and the next the reader was expected to view her as a highly capable professional. For me, those two sides never quite came together, although I'm hoping the character matures as the series progresses.
The storyline itself was what kept me reading. It was fast-paced, realistic, and easy to imagine happening in real life. The suspect was well developed, and the motive behind the killings felt believable and grounded.
I would have liked the author to delve a little deeper into the killer's psychology, as I think that would have added greater intensity and made the story even more compelling.
My biggest criticism was the recurring family drama involving the protagonist's sister and father. It felt like the same well-worn trauma subplot that appears throughout many of the author's books, and by this point it had me rolling my eyes more than feeling invested.
Overall, this was an enjoyable, easy read and perfect for a rainy afternoon. While I wouldn't be rushing out to buy the next book, I'd still recommend it to readers looking for a solid crime thriller.
Addison Shine and her partner Javier Esposito are agents who are on another mission now, their mission is to find the abductor and disappearance of several young women who just vanished from sight. There are looking to find a young woman called Emily Torres who was at a theme park with her friends but who suddenly vanished and they couldn't find her. Well they wouldn't, as she has been kidnapped and was at that moment in a wooden boxed maze with no way out and the walls were closing in on her, she was inside her worst nightmare. The killer meanwhile watching her and enjoying watching her die. Then another young woman is finally found drown in a tank of water with weights so never being able to surface, and another was put in a maze full of spiders, her worst nightmare. Addie and Javi have their work cut out trying to figure out who the killer was and why was he doing this? Very strong theme here and quite gory but it flowed along nicely and the chemistry between these two new characters is really good.
