Kindred: A thrilling slow burn romance

Rate this book
"Isn't that how all horror stories begin, in the woods where nobody can hear you scream?"

Lyra runs to the woods to survive,
clinging to the shadows as her only refuge.
Otto, scarred and guarded, hides behind pride and biting sarcasm,
convinced love has no place in his life.

The storm outside is relentless,
thunder shaking the windows as though to tear their walls down.
Fear stalks Lyra’s every breath,
while Otto wears his cynicism like battered armor.
Yet danger has a way of stripping people bare,
and in the dark, even their sharpest edges threaten to lock into place.

Remote cabin, a stalker, a horror author, a hot elder emo, Twilight hoa hoa forest vibes, and a love story that sneaks up on you like fog through the trees (this is why she’s the author and I’m not 😅).

“There’s a subconscious tether women have to their sense of safety – an invisible thread pulled taut through every generation.”
This quote (and the rest of this paragraph) stood out to me so I had to include it in my review as I felt it really set the tone for everything that follows.

G.M. White writes with such intentionality that every sentence feels considered, giving the whole book a quiet, beautiful weight. I don’t read a lot of books like this with its unhurried pace and prose that pulls you into the forest with them and actually makes you stop and experience the story instead of just racing through. The thriller elements, the romance, and the world building were all woven together seamlessly. Nothing felt forced and the mystery kept me on edge. Of course I made a couple of very confident and very wrong theories along the way.

Lyra (the FMC) is being stalked, and the stalker’s motivation is rooted in something so frustratingly real (I will not spoil this), but it hit a bit differently because of that and became less ‘scary for the sake of being scary’ and more ‘scary because this energy really does exist’. Then there’s Otto (the MMC), who brings lightness to an otherwise heavy atmosphere. The slow build between him and Lyra was the sweetest part of the whole book. Yes it’s a closed door romance, but some of the tension was genuinely 🔥🔥🔥. The quiet love felt earnt and realistic in a way that romance doesn’t always manage to pull off.

There were moments I laughed out loud (G.M. White, thank you for the pasta recipe 😉) and moments that were genuinely unnerving. The balance of tender, creepy, and occasionally chaotic is just *chef’s kiss*.

Thank you @gwhite.writes for the ARC, I can’t wait to read the next in the series!

Firstly, I got my copy of Kindred as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I haven’t read a thriller in a quick minute but I am so glad I got this one. Gabi, you had my heart securely lodged in my throat and I felt maybe I bit off more than I could chew with this. It wasn’t an all out crazy, it was subtle and calculated and f***ed with my brain. This book voiced a few thoughts and feelings, I’m guessing, most women have when it comes to trusting their guts when things don’t feel right but also the difficulty of believing when things feel right.

Lyra is a horror author on a deadline but also has a stalker to deal with. So when a friend suggests she has found a place for her to get away from it all, she heads off to a secluded cottage.
Otto arrives, not expecting anyone to be at his father cottage and just sticks around as he has work to do.
How they encounter in the same house in very different ways and how they both relate to each other from their own trauma makes this book a heart pounding ride.

Early on I thought I had worked out who Lyra’s stalker was, then changed my mind 2 more times and still got it wrong. The atmosphere was so well written it had me jumping at every bump in the night and second guessing myself.

Also the mushroom scene…IYKYK.

From the very first page, this book wrap around you like fog in the woods. It blends romance, suspense, mystery and eerie small-town darkness in a way that feels both beautiful and deeply uncomfortable, in the best possible way.
There’s this constant feeling of being watched. Storms rattle the windows, secrets lurk in the woods, and every chapter carries a something that just keeps you turning the pages to see what happens. Under all the fear and mystery is a story about loneliness, survival, womanhood and finding safety in another person when the world has taught you not to trust anyone.
