This was so good!! I’ve loved Dani’s books for a long time, and they can write the hell out of a novella!! This was no different! It was thought out and carefully written. We got enough of Paige and Benji’s past to see how we got where we were present day. I could have read an entire full length novel about Paige and Benji and their before and after!!

They were GOOD! It was so clear how much they loved each other, how meant to be they were! I loved how easily they were able to come back to each other. Even with Paige’s hesitations she knew that she loved Benji and that’s what matters most to her! And it was clear how much work Benji had done to be able to come back!!!

I also reaaaally loved Paige and Skye! Again, I could read a whole book about just their friendship!!

I’ll for sure be going to read the rest of the novella’s in this series!!

Thanks to Dani McLean for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

An amazing story is told between the pages of this book! Being under 200 pages, that is not easy, but Dani McLean does it spectacularly. The characters are amazing, the storyline flows, and nothing feels forced for the sake of the story. Can’t Stay Away is book 4 in the Hotel Bellwether series and is a book for everyone who loves second chance romances. With a beautiful dual timeline that stays clear and easy to follow, we get a wonderful look at what our MCs used to be, who they are now, and where they headed in the future.

Paige has spent the last year putting her heart back together after a breakup. She has poured herself into making her candle shop she runs with her cousin a success. When her cousin signs her up for a speed dating event, Paige isn’t thrilled, but does go. She never expects to run into the man who broke her heart. She doesn’t even know why he left her as he gave her no explanation, just left. But now he keeps showing up, wanting her back, and she is terrified to be hurt again. If she gives him another chance and he doesn’t stay this time, she won’t survive.

Benji never meant to hurt Paige the way he did, but knew he needed to work on himself first. I loved him being open and honest about his need for therapy, while at the same time understood why Paige was so hurt by him. He never stopped loving her and wants her back. He isn’t going to give up on what he knows they can have. However, he has to prove to Paige he has changed and won’t hurt her again. Dani made this man grovel for forgiveness and I ate every moment of this up!

Dani definitely paced this book quickly, but everything works within the pages of this book. As Paige and Benji begin to spend time together, it is easy to feel Paige’s defenses up and Benji trying to do everything he can to get back to where they once were. I could have easily read a full length novel about these two as they had so much to unpack. The dual timeline gives us insight to what happened between them in the past, both as a couple and individuals. Overall this book is a fun, romantic read that I think is a wonderful addition to the overall series. Each book can be read as a standalone too, if you choose to only read a few. I definitely recommend reading them all though!

As always, review any author notes before reading.

(I received an ARC for this book)

Trigger Warnings include:
focus on mental health, depression, and therapy; the loss of a spouse (side character) is mentioned, public sex

Can I say that I loved them already just based on the dedication and the prologue? Because I did! And after spending 2 seconds with Paige I knew I was right, and the moment Benji was on page, I was ready for the groveling to start! They’re both small business owners (wonderful!!) and he falls under the “good with his hands” category. When you’re on the forefront of moving forward, the last thing you expect (or want) is your ex to waltz in the door. And that’s exactly what Benji does. Waltzes in. With all the bells and whistles on. Ready to do everything he can to win Paige’s forgiveness. Even if it means losing her. But he’s not going to just give up! I ached for them. The heartbreak, missed time. But the growth! It was perfectly done, well paced, and because of that it did a great job giving both characters the space to grow! A man who is well aware of his emotional boundaries and willing to LEARN how to be a better person!? YES please and thanks! Oh, and in case a man good with his hands in therapy isn’t enough of a selling point: there’s a “want to watch” moment.

Benji is a collection of all of my favorite Dani MMCs. I felt them in all of his moments. Paige is exactly who I needed and wanted. They have a knock knock joke meet cute, and it’s the quirky adorableness that I loved about Roxie’s book in this multi-author series!

My Favorite Quotes:
• “I want to be the only man you ever want for the rest of your life.”
• “The only person I wanted, the only person I’ll ever want, is you.”
• “I can’t think when you look at me like that.” “And I can’t breathe without wanting to kiss you.”
• “This isn’t how you apologize.” “Would it help if I got on my knees?”
• “I’m consumed with wanting to know you.”
• “I’ll never stop loving you.”

7/10 Dirty Birdy
8/10 Second Chance
5/10 Slow Burn

This was my first experience reading Dani McLean’s books and I really enjoyed the writing style and overall vibe. I love it when we get to see first person perspectives from both sides. All of the characters were quite loveable and had their own unique little personality traits which added some interesting depth to the story. There’s also a bit of an open door left for secondary characters to perhaps get their own love stories (though nothing specifically was set up in this book) and I’d absolutely be interested in reading more about them as well. The relationship between Paige and Benji had all the fun, yearning and intensity that makes a couple amazing. I think the only thing that kept me from fully sinking into their renewed love story was my own struggle to fully understand what stopped it during their first try a year prior. Where some romance authors manufacture fairly ridiculous reasons for a couple to struggle and then reunite, I found that in this case I had the opposite issue. The reasons provided for the problems which caused their first breakup and then created a small test for their renewed relationship never quite seemed serious enough to cause that level of concern. It pulled me out of the story a bit because it didn’t quite feel realistic - not because the problems felt outlandish but because they felt almost too mundane. I felt like those things could have been handled without their relationship being impacted the way it was. That being said, their adorable connection is what kept me invested and I did enjoy that this book gave me a love story that felt refreshingly new. The spicy scenes were a bit of a slow burn and they felt completely natural within the context of this story. I received a free, early copy of this book to review and I’m happy to report that I really enjoyed it! I’d recommend it as a fun, light-hearted read that’s perfect for those times when you want an HEA that’s not going to emotionally destroy you in the process. It’d make a great vacation book!

ARC review

3.75 ⭐️

Title: Can’t stay away
(Book 4 in the hotel bellwether series)

Author: Dani McLean

Genre: contemporary romance

Spice: 3.5/5 it could’ve been a little more descriptive, and savored some of these moments a little slower, however the scenes themselves are 🔥

Pace: moderate.

Readability: easy to read and follow. Some parts were 10/10 wonderfully written. Other parts were okay.

Character development: the fmc and mmc are both likable. They run their own shops. They have a connection that just won’t quit and is easy to enjoy. There’s an energy between them you can feel.

Mentions/tropes:
Novella quick read
Mental health
Therapy
Intrusive thoughts
Speed dating
Miscommunication
Second chance romance
Fear of abandonment
They make a bet

My thoughts: this was very cute. It was flirty, fun, and overall I enjoyed it. This is the first book in the series that really didn’t seem related to the series itself. The hotel seemed like it was mentioned a couple of times but not really any sort of focal point that was necessary to the story. This could definitely have been read as a standalone and I don’t think you would miss anything in relation to the series. This book mentions things about mental health and gives a couple of examples, but it is kept very light. Basically the MMC is having mental health trouble and instead of having a real breakup he just ditches her and seeks therapy. The entire time he wants her back. They reconnected at a speed dating event a year later. They make a bet. You watch along while he fights to get her back. She’s terrified of him leaving again. There’s a couple friends in the mix but they don’t seem super relevant. It could’ve used a few more details on his leaving, but overall it’s a cute feel good romance with a lesson that you can’t pour from an empty cup.

This novella is the 4th book in the Hotel Belwether series, all of which I have received as Book Funnel ARCs (one remains in my inbox, so stay tuned). I believe this is my favorite so far, though it is quite tangentially related to the hotel that holds this series together. I requested the arc because the first book was written by Roxie Noir, one of my favorite romance writers. As it turned out, that novella was not up to regular Roxie Noir standards, and it was my least favorite of the lot. But accepting all these arcs turned me on to several other new-to-me writers who I now look forward to spending more time with, including Dani McLean, who authored this one.

Paige owns a high-end San Diego candle shop with her best frend/cousin, and she falls for Benji, the woodworker (not a double entendre) whose store is across the way. We meet the two after they dated, fell in love, and he left for a year without explanation. Paige was destroyed and spent a year wondering what she had done wrong. Benji comes back, blindsiding her at a dating event and begging for a second chance. We don't get an explanation as to why he could not tell her he was having personal issues, but just walked out, and though there are hints of a traumatic childhood, it is never really explained. If McLean had turned this into a novel instead of a novella, that giant hole could have been filled and it would be easier to see why Paige would take him back. I wish she had because the writing here is good, and I loved the characters, and there is a ton of potential. A 3.5, and I look forward to reading more from the author.

3.5 rounded to 4

Dani McLean's writing is some of my favorites. Her novellas always feel like such an immersive world in such a short amount of words. Her detailing is so well done. Her writing flows well, which leads to engaging and bingable reading.

Paige and Benji were a bit of an off couple for me. I did enjoy Paige and her best friend. I wish I got more of their friendship and how they got their business. I really enjoyed the FMC's personality and sense of humor. I found myself laughing at her jokes and smiling at the way she thought, etc.

I really enjoyed the dual POV, and the dual timeline. I liked seeing Benji and Paige's relationship THEN and how they were reforming their connection now.

I got a bit lost in Benji. I don't know if it's because he reminds me of someone I know, but I just found him deeply unlikable. I don't understand why he wouldn't just have told her why he was breaking up with her then? I found him to be really cocky and just overall insufferable. BUT, I think this may just be a me issue.

I think this is the first time I felt like I just wanted more of the characters and their stories. I did have enough meat in the book to really fall in love with their love stories and I left the book overall just wanting more.

NOW, with that said. I still had a good time. It was enjoyable and I would recommend it if you're looking for a quick second

I enjoyed this lighthearted “second-chance” romance by an author I hadn’t read before. The plot is captivating, well-written, and full of emotion, moments that made me laugh, and spice. I really liked the characters. Paige is introverted and a little awkward, and Benji is a determined “Golden Retriever” hero. The chemistry between them and their inner conflicts are palpable from the very beginning. I especially liked that he did everything he could to win her back. The supporting characters were also very likable, especially Skye, who was very protective.

When her cousin, best friend, and business partner Skye convinces her to attend The Belle’s weekly speed-dating night, single Paige Monroe has no idea that she’ll run into none other than her ex, Benji Collins, who left her a year ago without explanation and broke her heart.
Benji, who has spent the past year confronting his fears, has returned to win back the love of his life, but Paige is afraid he might hurt her again and isn’t ready to forgive him just yet…

If you enjoy entertaining, emotionally engaging quick reads set in a lovely setting, with humor and heat, this book is for you.

I received a free ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and left voluntarily.

This is a nice second-chance romance where the hero Benji returns to win his girl Paige back after a year apart. He had some mental-health issues that aren't discussed in detail, but he got therapy and is ready to engage with Paige in a healthier way. Paige spent the year crestfallen over the breakup, thinking he'd left her for his ex. The book was really well written and easily drew me in; I loved the prologue with characters' hand-written goals, which quickly and effectively set the stage. I loved Paige's deep interiority and on-page vulnerability, but Benji remained somewhat of a mystery, likely because the story was told almost exclusively from Paige's POV despite technically being dual POV. I feel we should've seen him grovel and explain himself more. Nonetheless, I quite enjoyed the book, as it was overall nicely crafted and filled with emotion. Lots of thirsting by Paige over Benji (who might be the hottest man alive!) with a bit of open-door spice.

Many thanks to the author for the ARC.

“You said we could either prove people right or prove them wrong, but we couldn’t do either if we didn’t even try.”

Communication is the key to everything that ends with a ship! This novella follows a carpenter and a candle maker as they find their way back to each other. I really enjoyed the first 10%. Paige trying to stay away from Benji while still being hopelessly in love with him, while he's determined to win her back, had me hooked. And I absolutely love a man who recognizes he needs help and goes to therapy to become a better person. GREEN FLAG!

I also loved, loved, loved Skye. Everyone deserves a Skye in their life. It's such a bummer because the beginning had so much potential, but the rest was weighed down by too much doubt and miscommunication, which dropped my rating to below 3 stars. Dani definitely nailed the slow burn, especially for a novella. I could totally understand why Paige couldn't stop getting lost in Benji's eyes and falling even harder for him.

Anyone calling this spicy must be into vanilla because the spice was barely there. My favorite part of the book was actually seeing Benji be such an amazing uncle.

I'm voluntarily leaving an honest review for the ARC I received from Dani. Thank you for the opportunity!

Thank you Dani McLean for this ARC of Can’t Stay Away, let me say I couldn’t stay away from these two‼️

A second chance with the power to knock both Paige and Benji off their axis with how spectacular their love bloomed the second time around. With Benji shutting down and closing himself off and not communicating with Paige the struggles that he was having and that ultimately his love for her and his desperate need for her is what saved them both!

This was the sweetest journey of healing and rediscovering the passion and devotion to one another that they shared.

The way that Dani wrote these characters in such a way that your heart was broken from the start but the way she covered us with the blissful memories of the why these characters were destined to be by the powers of the Bellwether Hotel, to burn for eternity and not just the lengths of a 100 hour candle 🫶

Tropes:

While this book had the least amount set at Hotel Bellwether in the series, it was another great addition!

Paige and Benji broke up a year ago, and he abruptly left town. The last place Paige expected to see him again was at a speed dating event held at her favorite hotel known for love. Benji’s back with one goal - win Paige back. But in order to do that, he has to be truthful about why he left in the first place and why now will be different.

Paige and Benji get their happy ending in this standalone novella in a series.

I feel the spice level in this book, compared to the others in the series, is lighter, but it also made sense and worked really well. I loved watching the conflicting emotions play across the page for Paige and how sometimes you need to listen to someone when they say they’ve put in the work to change. Though I thought her sister’s idea for a condition for forgiveness was hilarious.

I received an advance review copy from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I’m a sucker for a good cover of a book and this one reeled me in. I’ve never read this author before so I thought I’d give her a chance and I really enjoyed this book. It’s a second chance finding yourself and being who you are story. Paige and Benji updated in the past. Benji broke Paige‘s heart and says he’s trying to move on there in each other’s lives again. I like to open and honest Benji was for the reasoning of the breakup. He was trying to make himself better as a person and for her as well. This was the fourth book in the series and although I have not read their previous three, I did not feel like I was missing anything. Even though the book was a little bit shorter than most, I did not feel like this book was rushed. This was a cute dual timeline story that I would recommend.

I received this ARC through the publisher and I am voluntarily reviewing this book, opinions are my own.

5 ⭐ 2 🌶️

I just adore Dani and her stories. Every one is so full of heart and whimsy and spice and I can't get enough. Paige and Benji were no exception—this second chance, forced proximity, mutual pining novella was exactly what I needed to start my summer off right and the only complaint I have is that she hasn't confirmed we're getting Issac's story too because I NEEDS IT DANI. Also I'd keel over for Shay's too, preferably with Bianca pleaseandthankyou.

This was a slow burn built on yearning and the tension was thick as hades. The rain scene mayyyy live rent free in my head five ever, alongside the snooty customer scene too. While the spice may be limited, it packs a hot lil punch that makes you ooey gooey.

Up next is A Bitter Suite Divide and as excited as I am, I'm not sure I'm ready to leave Southern California....

Thank you so much to Dani for the advanced copy!!

Firstly I would like to thank the author and BookFunnel for the ARC.

I loved Paige and Benji's story! Two lovers having a second-chance at love after a year of heartbreak. We were able to read about what happened in the past, but also their present day love too. Both had their own vulnerabilities that they had to work through as individuals, but as a couple as well. The power of being open and honest in a safe relationship.
I admire Paige for being able to distance herself from Benji like she did, I fell for him after his first chapter!

Kudos to the relationship between Paige and her best friend Skye too - this was a beautiful addition to have which complemented the romantic love story with a platonic love story too.

Thank you again to Dani McLean for the ARC, I'll be adding more books to my TBR pile now.

Book 4 in the multi author series set around the infamous Hotel Bellwether. This is a second chance at love for Benji and Paige. Paige is attending a speed dating event at the hotel and Benji crashes it just to catch Paige’s attention after leaving her 12 months prior. The breakup left Paige absolutely broken-hearted and unable to move on, even when she tried her hardest. Benji put on the biggest grovel show, and what a show it was! But once he explained what happened 12 months ago, that cracked my heart a little too. So pleased they’re in for a second chance. A quick little slow burn novella and lovely addition to the series.

Short fun story
This is the fourth book of a multi author series of novellas set around the Hotel Bellwether.
A short story featuring Paige and Benji who have history.
They dated a year ago then Benji leaves town leaving a heartbroken Paige wondering if he went back to his ex girlfriend.
They reconnect at the Hotel Bellwether where they are both at a speed-dating event.
Benji wants her back and tries to explain why he left her but she’s too hurt and won’t listen.
He’s pretty creative and will do anything to get her back but she’s worried he will leave again.
This is a fun second chance at love story with mention of mental health issues, it’s also emotional and steamy.
A story I enjoyed reading.
Thank you Dani McLean for the opportunity to read this story.

Thank you to author Dani McLean for the arc! I love a good second chance romance and I’m so glad Paige and Benji found their way back to each other. I loved that Paige and Benji really worked on getting it right this time by giving each other what the other needed: Paige needed an explanation for why Benji left the first time and Benji needed Paige to listen and forgive him. Then even when they had fun together, flirted and had some steamy moments, it felt like they were on much more solid ground for the relationship to move forward. I also liked Paige’s friendship with Skye and Benji’s friendship with Isaac and his niece and nephew. I look forward to reading the rest of the books in this series and more books by this author.

Benji messed up. That's evident, but there's no deep dive into why he left the way he did. It certainly broke Paige's heart.
Running into him at a speed dating event at the hotel a year later kicks things off, and I wasn't honestly sure if I wanted to root for him or not. After the year apart, it's easy to see that neither of them moved on.

The sparks are there, but can she trust him? He has communication issues, and a history of ghosting. She just wants to be chosen and loved.

It's a beautiful look at the rebuilding of a love story. This one is a little different as the hotel isn't the main backdrop, but I don't hate that. In the end, Hotel Bellwether is a magical place.

I think this was my favourite novella out of this collection. I highlighted and annotated so much on my kobo. Hello second chance romance…! I love when books have mixed media like text messages or letters. This book starts off with handwritten goals for each character which already gives us an insight into the themes of this book. I love Paige and Benji :,) so much! He makes a big mistake but will spend forever trying to make it up to her. So much yearning and grovelling…it’s delicious. It makes me wild (in the best way) when the main characters only want each other and nobody else turns them on or gets them like they do…a micro trope I love love love. We have chapters that flick between past and present so we feel what these characters felt. Benji goes to therapy and works on his healing which is so hot and I love seeing it spoken about in books. Hot people go to therapy!

ARC REVIEW
Paige hadn’t been on a date for over a year when her cousin signed her up for speed dating at the Romantic Bellwether Hotel she was all for it until in walked her ex boyfriend Benji, who had broken her heart when he left and she never got over him. He couldn’t believe his luck to see her again and he all he wanted was the chance to apologise and make it up to her for walking away. This story took you on an emotional roller coaster of will they or won’t they get back together, can she or can’t she trust him to not walk away again, it was a great story of second chance love and and forgiveness and trust

I really enjoyed this novella. It's part of a series, but can be read as a standalone. This is a second chance romance between Paige and Benji. It's told in dual timeline and starts when Paige is at a speed dating event and her ex (Benji) is also attending. We get the whole story of what happened in the before time of their relationship and what is happening currently - it's spicy and their chemistry is well written. Very well told!

I really enjoyed this one. Paige and Benji had great chemistry, and it was obvious there were still feelings between them from the very beginning.

I liked watching Benji try to make things right and earn another chance with Paige. Even though this is a novella, I still felt invested in their story and honestly could have read a full-length book about them.

Overall, this was a sweet second-chance romance that was easy to get into and left me smiling by the end.

Thank you to Dani McLean for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Yucky Second chance. A second chance romance that had some holes. Starts at a speed dating event, Paige had to be talked into going and Benji arrives looking confident and interested in meeting new people but wants to talk with Paige. The story jumps between current day and a year or more ago. Several parts get muddled as there isn’t always a good point made for the time travel. Much of the story has weak, unsatisfactory or inappropriate interactions between the characters. Finished it but was tempted not to.

Paige attends speed dating at the Hotel Bellwether, where she runs into Benji, her ex who left her devastated. A friendly bet is made and after Paige wins she must plan Benji's date for him. Only to find out that Benji never made a date and used this situation to get Paige on a date with him. Benji has been doing some self-work and now has decided that he can't let Paige get away a second time. This was a cute, emotional and funny read - all the good things! Another great addition in this book series.

Paige + Benji

Let me start this off with I love a second chance romance. Mostly, because I believe in love and believe that people deserve a second chance. Benji 100% deserved a second chance. Yes, he did hurt Paige but I loved how well they communicated the second time around. Paige needed that to feel secure and to know he wouldn't leave her a second time. He also gave her closure as to why he left before and why they didn't work out. It really wasn't her, it was him. He had some things to work through and he went to therapy. It also sounded like he had continued therapy which I love.

It was short, sweet, and a really good story.

I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing.

Another Amazing Romance In The HotelBellwether Series!

I was completely sucked in from the beginning. When Paige decided to try speed dating to help get over her ex, nothing could prepare her for him being at the speed dating event also. Paige decides to make a bet with him over who gets the most matches and then will set the date up for the other person. She does win, and also chooses outfit for him as well. One thing leads to another and he tells her the truth. This was such a good story, I couldn’t put it down!

This is the fourth book in the series. They are all short stories that revolve around a hotel. Paige and Benji were in love or so she thought until one day he just up and left. What she didn’t know was that he needed to work on himself so that he could be the man she deserves. When he comes back he is determined to prove his love. This is a fun slightly spicy read that will remind you that you are no good to others if you are not good to yourself. Can’t wait for the next one!!

Aww… Benji and Paige’s second-chance love story is so romantic that I found myself swooning and melting the whole time. I loved their intense chemistry and the way they worked through their problems step by step. I especially liked that Benji went to great lengths to win Paige back, and that Paige made him work for it …
“Can’t Stay Away” is an entertaining novella that I wish were much longer, since I’m not ready to say goodbye to these wonderful main and supporting characters just yet.
