What really happens when you take on a system — without a lawyer?
Fired by text message. No warning. No explanation. No way back.
At 46, Ryan Lee watched his career end in a single moment. No severance. No support. No legal representation. Most people don’t fight the system. They don’t know how. Or they can’t afford to. He had neither option.
What followed was a six-year battle across three courts—facing a system few individuals truly understand, and even fewer dare to challenge alone.
No legal training. No deep pockets. Just relentless persistence—and a refusal to let the official record stand.
This is not just a story about losing a job. It’s about what it takes to fight back when the odds are designed against you.
Winning Without a Lawyer is a gripping true story of resilience, strategy, and quiet defiance— a powerful two-hour read that stays with you long after the final page.
For anyone who has ever felt powerless against an institution… and wondered if one person could actually win.
Ryan Lee is a former sales professional whose unfair dismissal in 2019 led him into a six-year encounter with the court system. After his dismissal, he navigated the Industrial Court on his own, then engaged counsel for the High Court — and lost. That loss became a turning point. He chose to face the Court of Appeal alone, without a lawyer, and won. That experience taught him what legal training alone cannot: how to read a system, when to wait, and why the smallest details matter most. This is his first book.
He welcomes feedback, reader stories and media enquiries. For adaptation inquiries or updates on the launch of Book 2, you can reach him at ryanlee1973.author@gmail.com.
If this book helped you see an institutional process differently, or reminded you that persistence is possible even when the odds are not in your favor, I would be genuinely grateful if you took a moment to leave a review wherever you purchased it. Reviews from real readers are what allow stories like this one to find the people who need them most. Even a few sentences make a difference.
Landing a job is an achievement, but keeping it can be just as challenging. So imagine you’ve landed a job and everything seems to be going well. Then suddenly, you receive a message indicating that you’ve been terminated from this position. No just cause and no explanation why. You’re left dumbfounded. Questions ruminate in your mind. How could this happen? Why did it happen? What are my next steps? Etc. While most individuals will gather themselves after this devastating loss, move on, and seek other employment, some choose to fight, refusing to let the company go unpunished. Ryan Lee is one of these individuals.
After receiving a WhatsApp message informing him that he’d been fired from the company he was working for at the time, which, according to him, was done without just cause, Lee decided to take legal action and seek justice for being wrongfully let go. Lee details the entire process in his memoir Winning Without a Lawyer: How I Fought My Unfair Dismissal for Six Years—and Won. Six years of being in and out of different court systems, including the Industrial and the Appellate Courts, led to ongoing stress and emotional exhaustion. Six years of filing documents to argue and prove the injustice he faced due to the company’s actions, often feeling uncertainty and frustration about the future and his self-worth. All of the tears, frustrations, doubts, and uncertainty led to one final answer in 2025: yes. The courts agreed with Lee and found his argument to be justified. He’d won his case.
Now what? Due to his findings and everything he went through during this process, Lee is compiling and preparing information to begin work on book two. Focusing on the Industrial Court quantum assessment. Some of the things his book will cover include “The complexities of enforcing entitlement in a system influenced by discretionary decisions and bureaucratic inertia,” states Lee.
There’s a vast array of authors who supply readers with numerous stories. Some are intriguing, comical, sad, frustrating, informative, and Winning Without a Lawyer: How I Fought My Unfair Dismissal for Six Years —and Won was informative. I appreciated Lee’s tenacity, his willingness to educate himself on court matters to strengthen his case, and his win without a lawyer. It’s unfortunate that Lee and many others have to endure, at times, the injustices of being terminated from a job without a valid reason, and I feel that it takes specific individuals to seek justice when they know that they’ve been wrongfully terminated.
Winning Without a Lawyer: How I Fought My Unfair Dismissal for Six Years — and Won was a short read, which I appreciated. Despite Lee’s book being a quick, informative read, his tenacity and his willingness to share his story in hopes of helping someone else in a similar circumstance, it wasn’t for me. It was hard for me to connect with his story. Yes, this is what happened to him, and I understand that it didn’t happen to me, but if Lee possibly had said that losing that job made it more difficult for him to provide for himself or his family, I could have sympathized with him and understood his point a little better. Honestly, based on the title, I thought Lee was wrongfully convicted of a crime and fought the legal system, and won his case.
Although I sympathize with Lee’s situation, I wondered why he didn’t look for other employment. The story could benefit from more personal details, such as the impact on his family or finances, particularly his relationship with his late father. The book reads more like a document than a memoir, making it difficult to connect on a human level.
If you are seeking information on how to hold a company legally accountable for a wrongful dismissal, Lee’s personal insights could be invaluable on your journey. Winning Without a Lawyer: How I Fought My Unfair Dismissal for Six Years —and Won is not only an insightful, quick read but also an empowering resource that demonstrates how perseverance and self-advocacy can lead to justice. For anyone facing a similar battle, Lee’s story stands as both guidance and inspiration.
I frequently joke that I’m not an attorney, but I sometimes play one on the internet. Ryan Lee, the author of this book, did the equivalent of responding to that with “hold my beer,” acting as his own attorney after being fired from his job in what I’ll describe as a very non-professional way that I don’t think any normal person would see as a reasonable approach, even if the firing was justifiable which in this case it doesn’t appear to be. How Ryan fought back is an interesting read, at least for an internet lawyer like myself. His disclaimer makes it clear that while he tried his best to cover the story fully, that it is based largely on memory and he might have missed something in his version here. (Yeah, disclaimers are good in this situation.) He also avoids getting too deep into the weeds where only an actual attorney or someone doing their best to be their own would understand the fine points, instead talking about things from a higher level that an average person can follow while still getting a sense of what this battle was like for him. If you’re interested in this kind of thing like I am and find yourself playing attorney on the internet, odds are reasonable that you’ll enjoy this story.

Haven’t fully finished this yet, but I was drawn in just from the title and the premise alone. The idea of taking on a legal battle without a lawyer is something most people wouldn’t even consider, so it immediately stood out to me.
From what I’ve read so far, it feels very real and straightforward—no fluff, just someone sharing what it actually takes to push back when things feel unfair. You can already sense the persistence behind the story.
Definitely one I’m curious to keep reading, especially for the insight and real-life experience behind it.
