In the wake of WWII, former Army nurse Eva Bryant is determined to save her grandfather's Oregon farm and prove herself in the Arabian horse show world. When decorated veteran Warren Hayes arrives with Phantom—the spirited colt Eva helped deliver in war-torn Germany—she seizes her chance to train the unmanageable horse.

As Eva works to tame Phantom and salvage her failing farm, Warren wrestles with his own future: a promised Senate campaign to fight for veterans. But everything unravels under sabotage from a predatory neighbor, crushing debts, and the undeniable pull between the two of them. As victories carry Phantom toward a national championship, Eva and Warren must fight to protect everything they've built—even as Eva guards a devastating secret that could destroy the growing love between them.

Nicole M. Miller masterfully weaves a story of post-World War II resilience with equestrian passion, crafting an emotionally rich historical romance.

“None of that really matters to me. You won’t face the frenzy alone, Eva. The only last name I care about is you taking mine.”

Did you have a “horse-girl” phase? This amazing book will definitely speak to that piece of your heart. It’s a beautiful story of healing, second chances, faith, and hope.

I loved how this story showed the struggles of returned soldiers (and a nurse) but also a soldier’s family. I loved how these soldiers latched on to their new mission and found healing, acceptance, and meaning for their lives. This found family was a highlight of the story! All of these characters are fantastic!
Eva is strong, determined, and talented. I loved that she didn’t back down when facing her horrible neighbor. I loved that she accepted Warren’s help and his soldier friends. I loved her compassion for every person and animal she encountered. I loved her amazing horse training sessions. The way she held the sins of her parents against herself was heartbreaking. I loved her surrender of her past and seeking God’s will. Warren! 😍 Warren is intelligent, protective, and caring. I loved his devotion to his fellow soldiers and his deep desire to better their lives. I loved that he didn’t even hesitate to help Eva and that he stood by her through all the danger. I loved his acceptance of her revealed secrets and his determination to win her heart. Eva and Warren’s journey to their happily ever after has lows, highs, and twists but it also has deep friendship and swoony moments. The epilogue was a perfect ending!

A few more quotes:
“You’re not alone in this. I’ve got your back.”

“I’m sorry, Warren. You were right.” “I don’t want to be right about these things. I just want you to be safe.”

“I don’t trust anyone else with our horse,” I said. She pressed her lips together and looked up with a small smile. “Our horse?” “Well. We did bring him into this world together.” Her chin trembled slightly. “We did.”

As the heroes of World War II, including those in Miller's debut work, Until Our Time Comes, return home, they find some things about home irrevocably changed. Eva Bryant's adoptive grandfather is gone, and his horse ranch is in disrepair, with his life's work in jeopardy. Ghost Rider Warren Hayes, however, finds not enough has changed and not enough is being done for veterans struggling to reenter daily life at home. When he rescues Phantom, a prized Arabian from Europe, only Eva will take on the challenge of erasing war wounds. A long-standing dispute with a neighboring ranch turns into deadly sabotage, even as both discarded horses and heroes converge in Baker, OR. Readers will be excited to return to the Arabian horse world, much changed by total war.
VERDICT: With so much publishing focus on European WWII novels, Miller brings a needed perspective on its aftermath and picking up the pieces of a life and rebuilding relationships torn apart by war. The added suspense from the ranch feud and past secrets set this book apart.

As a former horse owner and horse show mom, every so often I need a good horsy novel to remind me of the past. I found one like this on Net Galley. It starts in Poland towards the end of World War II where the Horse Cowboys of the American Cavalry are rescuing Arabian and Lipizzaner horses stolen by the Germans. Warren, a Captain, is facing a difficult birth for a valuable mare. He finds an able assistant in nurse Eva and they succeed in delivering Phantom, a gray colt with the rare blood marking on his shoulder that indicates a true warrior.

The story is told in alternating chapters by Captain Warren and nurse and horsewoman Eva. Eva was adopted by a famous horse whisperer after being orphaned. Her parents were killed while robbing a bank and Eva was traumatized and ran away from an orphanage placement. She is raised and taught by Bill, whom she calls her grandfather. After the war, Eva returns to the farm in Oregon and attempts to buy the colt she delivered.

Captain Warren was the lucky buyer, but Phantom has been turned into a biter and kicker by cruel treatment and Warren has to find that special trainer who can save this valuable animal. You can expect some interesting information about training horses and Arabian horse showing and judging. The author adds excitement and suspense when her neighbor, who desperately wants her farm, threatens her life with goons. Warren appears as a white knight to rescue and fall in love with Eva. The novel is gripping, suspenseful and most entertaining.

The book would have been five stars had I not been disappointed by the inclusion of “Christian Literature”.. Please leave the faith-based commercials for God in church. It tends to turn off us non-believers.

Thanks to Net Galley and the pyblisher for an ARC copy of this book. The opinions are my own honest ones.

Five stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I just finished All We Carry Home by Nicole M. Miller, and wow—this book was absolutely amazing! I cried both sad tears and happy tears. ❤️

This WWII novel follows Eva Bryant, a former Army nurse who returns home determined to save her grandfather’s Oregon farm. But coming home is not easy. Eva is struggling with the memories and trauma of war, the loss of the grandfather who raised her, and the responsibility of keeping the farm alive. To make matters worse, a nasty neighbor is determined to take away the last thing she has left.

I loved how this story showed the lasting effects of war—not only on the soldiers who return home, but also on their families and children. Eva and Warren find healing and purpose through their work with trauma horses, while also creating a place where broken soldiers can feel accepted, needed, and like they still have a mission.

This book beautifully explores family secrets, new beginnings, found family, true love, and the courage it takes to share your deepest fears with the right person. Eva learns that trusting the wrong person with her secrets can hurt her because of their fear, but the right person will stand beside her and refuse to let her past define her.

Thank you for sharing such a beautiful, emotional, and unforgettable story. If you love horses, trauma-horse training, competitions, family secrets, romance, and stories about healing after war, this is a must-read!

Thank you so much, Nicole, for having me on your ARC team and for giving me the opportunity to read your book early. It truly was an honor to be part of your team and experience this beautiful story. 🤍

All thoughts and opinions are completely my own.

What an incredible and inspiring book! The themes that resonated with me are about trust, second chances and redemption.

The characters are brilliantly written! I immediately cared about each of the men, women and children that loved and protected Eva. Eva is absolutely AMAZING! People and animals are drawn to her. She's compassionate, caring and reliable. Warren is 😍!! He's the captain of Operation Cowboy. He's loyal to his men and a protector to everyone he considers family. Phantom is my favorite 🐎! He'd been frightened and neglected since a young colt and he needed a calm and patient person to pull him from his dark and broken current situation.

Eva faces some financial hardships and unscrupulous people soon prey on her. "..I was truly alone and a David to this Goliath, without a stone to my name, surrounded by sand." It was wonderful when Warren gathered up his "soldiers" and they became Eva's protectors and eventually her family!

If you grew up loving all things horses, this one is definitely going to be right up your alley. But honestly, as someone who is not a horse person, this book still drew me right into this world and kept me intrigued. Eva and Warren meet in the midst of WWII while delivering a colt, Phantom. They part ways, but post war they find themselves brought back together by Phantom once again. I really enjoyed this link between them and found it made for a really interesting story... and presented a unique aspect of the war that I don't believe I'd seen in other books in the past. They had a sweet slow burn romance with just enough secrets and hints of suspense to keep me reading on. If you enjoy Christian romance, books centered around horses, or life post WWII, this is certainly one worth adding to your TBR.
