Being Australian, I'd never heard of Creek Stewart and I'm no outdoorsy survivor-skills type of person. Even though I do love watching Survivor!

However, I'm experiencing my own wilderness season and so I've been leaning into resources that assist me in walking this season with hope and perseverance.

And I loved the books title. God is wild and as Stewart reminds us repeatedly God meets us in the wilderness.

This was a surprisingly excellent set of devotionals. Stewart uses his experiences, his skills and the wisdom gained from his teaching, TV shows and the like, to forge a set of devotionals that are very relevant and applicable for our time. I'm discovering that a key element of true spiritual formation, ie, becoming more like Jesus, requires time in the wilderness, following Jesus and many others in the Bible's example. Stewart is humble and often discusses the mistakes he made, even on live television, and what he learnt from those. He's gained a lot of experience from his survivor skill expertise and training but more significantly has allowed himself to surrender increasingly to God to discover more about God, himself and how he can participate in what God's doing in and around his life. It's tremendously uplifting and inspirational in many ways.

Typically, each devotional was 2-3 pages in length, meaty enough to be applicable and gain some wisdom. Then he provided a Key Verse, a set of questions to enable you to reflect and act upon one's learnings, plus a prayer and then a wilderness application, eg, go outside and build a fire!

The Wilderness applications didn't really grab me, however, they did get me outside more, simply being amongst God's creation with God. Stewarts's prayers are outstanding and I've saved many for future reference and prayer.

I have no hesitation in recommending this and do not be put off if your not an outdoorsy sort/survivor skills as you'll learn much from this set of devotionals and who knows you might actually discover you don't mind learning some of those survivor skills like fire making.

I feel blessed having received an early ebook copy from the author via NetGalley. This has had no bearing on my review and I'm thinking I'll purchase my own hardback plus buy a few for friends of mine to read.
