Finding Home

Rate this book
Left adrift after escaping from an abusive relationship has left Salem Rooks with little in the way of personal connections in his life. So when Salem bumps into an attractive stranger on his way to work one morning he isn’t expecting it to lead anywhere. He certainly isn’t expecting it to change his life.

Wyatt Pendleton is handsome, sweet natured, and homeless. Drawn to the quiet strength Wyatt exudes, Salem finds himself pulled back to the man’s side time and time again. Working through their differences is a challenge, as is the ever looming shadow of Salem’s abusive ex. Despite that, Salem finds that he and Wyatt are both willing to fight to protect the home that they’ve found in each other.

A Hearts On Fire Review

FOUR HEARTS--If you like hurt/comfort featuring abused MC's, Rebecca Brochu's "Finding Home", hit my spot. A little heavy in the sweet towards the end, but overall, it gave me the story fitting for the characters.

Salem Rooks has picked up and left his life the moment his abusive, stalking ex comes around. His ex wanted to "train him" with his fists. (Trigger warning: abuse happened in the past and off page) He has restarted his life, moved, changed jobs too many times to count and yet his rich ex still finds him. In the latest attempt to jump start his life, he works as a paralegal and suffers from PTSD. One morning changes his life when he bumps into a homeless man, Wyatt.

He slowly opens up to Wyatt - sharing food, outerwear for the cold nights. And they develop a bond - both men had eccentricities and adapted. I won't lie, the homeless MC as a love interest made me stop and think some. Would I pick a hobo? I highly doubt it. But it's not my story.

Learning how sweet Salem was, it would totally be in his nature to befriend a homeless man as long as it was on his terms because he has trust issues. The romance progress was slow and believable once you stretch reality a little to think of a homeless MC as a potential lover.

The pacing was natural, the love scenes were spot on. The length gave enough for both MC's to show who they were. I felt like I got a sense of each guy. Learning why Wyatt was homeless was a little different but I'm sure there are more people with his story on the streets than we know.

Quibbles? Minor yet I have some. Wyatt...he didn't have any counseling. I felt like he should've. To make him go that extreme and then finally return to the land of the living? Also, the resolution with the ex. A little to fast and quick. Also, I would have liked to read what he said in those emails to Salem - to fully grasp how evil he truly was.

I really liked this story. It hit my major points for abused MC books - displaying their emotional trauma so the reader could understand, giving the MC the right length of time to jump into a new relationship and not sweeping their issues under the rug once the new man steps in.

The sticky sweet bits were toward the end (thank goodness).
I really enjoy the author's tone and would definitely read more from this author in the future.

It was easy to read: two compelling characters, a steadily building *interesting* relationship, all told with a prose often paced well. But when it wasn't paced well, the problems were exposition and repetition: we were told how Salem feels often and repeatedly. I rolled my eyes, moaning, "Pease stop explaining, you've already showed. Less--when it's exquisitely chosen baroque moments--is more."

I liked Salem; his voice rang out strong, sincere, and likeable. Wyatt, while initially mysterious, kind, with a hint of danger because of his powerful, big body and that same mysteriousness, eventually became a-fucking-nnoying, what with his Jesus-wisdom: he was too perfectly understanding, too perfectly gentle and gentlemanly. His homelessness was *almost* whitewashed, idealized.

The whole abusive ex thing started out convincingly vivid, as seen through the eyes of our strong survivor, Salem, but soon deteriorated into cardboard, personality-less, and chopped off resolution. (Who were these angels, descending from the magical police department that finally respects Salem's complaints?) Carter was an archetype, not a real person. Also, I didn't like the dismissing, women-belittling comment about feeling like 'some sort of downtrodden fifties housewife'; women in DV relationships (regardless of the era) suffer too, need incredible strength too, just as Salem did, to escape certain thought patterns and choices. Where's the respect, man?

Anyway, I still gave this story a solid, respectable three because I was completely involved all the way through, and I did enjoy it: it was all heartwarming fuzzies, with a slow-burn believable love-growing vibe (minus the occasional OD of sugah), and--thank you lord--a lovely slow physical relationship building, with just an edge of feelz every once in awhile.

Salem has been in the run for a while. Ever since he ran away from his abusive boyfriend. He gets settled somewhere and then the emails start, followed by deliveries. And finally a in person visit that does usually end well for Salem. He is always ready to pick up and take off again. That is until he runs into Wyatt, literally.

Wyatt is a local homeless military vet. He has been living in the doorway of a building across the street from Salem’s apartment. After first run in Salem takes an interest in Wyatt. First it’s warmer clothes and food. Over time it becomes something more for both of them.

This book is just sweet. Two lost souls find what they are looking for in the other. Perhaps the circumstances are not the most realistic, but I didn't really care either. The great writing and emotion of both characters drew me in.

This is great for a when you need a “pick me up” kind of feeling book. There is no way else to really describe it.

Taking the time to stop and do one small thing for a stranger shows what a beautiful heart Salem has. His strength of character shines through, even when he feels anxiety and panic attacks try to rule his life. This story is so wonderfully written, my only wish is that we could have the same insight into Wyatt’s character as well. Their feelings for each other come across as completely genuine and honest, pulling you right in and not letting go.

I liked that these characters were strong individually but still needed each other and were even stronger together. I also liked that the relationship built over time instead of developing over the course of a few days. I would totally want to be friends with this couple! They are so sweet together and I definitely see them lasting long-term. I'll probably be picking this one up again in the future for a nice comfort read.

Wyatt and Salem. I really liked them. I loved Salem's willingness to help, but still cautious. I loved Wyatt. He was strong, protective, thankful and I loved everything about him.

Their relationship seemed natural and the pacing was perfect.
