Parks #1

Denying Mr Parks

Rate this book
Evelyn Banks is her own worst enemy…

A recovering alcoholic, the key to Evelyn’s continuing sobriety is to remain focused and controlled. She finally has her life on track with a new job at a law firm, but her world is shaken when she meets the firm’s gorgeous, charming, dominant CEO.

Wade Parks asks for only one thing—to be obeyed…

Wade’s perfect world is one of discipline and obedience. When he encounters his firm’s new employee, he begins a cat-and-mouse game in his pursuit of the feisty and independent Evelyn, determined to break through her cold demeanor and give her the discipline he’s sure she craves.

Evelyn is willing to submit to his dominance, but her emotions are another matter…

Both of Evelyn’s parents were addicts, incapable of giving her the slightest bit of affection, and she’s not equipped to deal with the rush of powerful emotions her relationship with Mr. Parks unleashes. So she turns to the only solace she knows—numbing her feelings with alcohol.

He sees past Evelyn’s flaws, but some secrets hit too close to home…

Just as Evelyn’s heart begins to thaw, Mr. Parks is reminded of his own troubled upbringing and he pulls away, leaving her feeling abandoned.

But another very real danger is lurking, and Evelyn might be very wrong about the source of the threat…

Can she be saved by denying Mr. Parks?

Or is submitting to him the only way to save them both?

“Why was I so afraid of him finding out about my past when I never wanted him in my future?”

First time author Lilly James just did something wildly unusual, she brought the big guns and totally blew me away with one hell of an emotionally draining, infuriating, raw and highly addictive read. What an amazing ride. It sucked me in completely and spit me out totally messed up in the end.

There was absolutely nothing that didn't work for me in Denying Mr. Parks. I loved the deeply flawed characters, the highly descriptive writing style and the emotional roller-coaster I just went through over the last 24 hours.

I finished reading seven hours ago and I'm still thinking about Evey and Wade, and thanks to that mother of a cliffy at the end I will be biting my nails until the next book -in the planned trilogy- will be out. Hurry up Ms. James and expect some fangirl stalking in the meantime. ;D

I try and be as vague as I can with my review, 'cause only having the blurb to go with worked out really well for me.

“When I want something, I always get it. Right now, what I want is you. I knew it as soon as you introduced yourself to me. And I don't necessarily need to know all about someone to understand that I want them and I won't stop until I have it.”

Evelyn Banks is doing fine. No she is doing good in fact. Her life is almost normal after a lifetime of struggle. She is living with her best friend, there is a man interested in her (Alex, her best friend's brother) and she has the perfect job as an assistant at one of the best law firms in the city. At twenty-five she is finally doing good.

That is until Wade Parks comes into her life. The founder of Parks Law Firm is not only insanely good looking, rich and highly intelligent; no, on top of that he has an almost insane obsession with poor Evey the moment he lays eyes on her. And let me tell you, that man doesn't take no for on answer. Literally.

“Yes, he was a man that sucked air from lungs.”

He states his intentions so bluntly, that cocky bastard...I was clutching my pearls in shock. *wink wink*

“The things that mess us up in life are fantasies inside our heads telling us how life is meant to be. How life should be. When really, life is a living nightmare.”

For the casual reader this sounds just like any other 'billionaire falls for the employee' romance trope. But it's not. There are so many layers and facets to these characters, I couldn't even begin to tell you who they are. But that's also because we still don't know that much after the first book.

Evey is flawed, and deeply so. She is not alright and even contemplating any kind of connection with Mr. Parks is potentially toxic and most definitely ill-advised. And yet, it's just so damn tempting and irresistible.

“If I tell you my past, I'm scared you won't want my future.”

Evey's daemons are a brave subject for the author to touch on. I personally haven't seen it in a romance novel before and it was not an easy thing to read and her journey gets very self-destructive and painful to watch. I'm not going into details here, or even telling what exactly her problem is, but in my humble opinion it's a good twist.

Wade on the other hand is not used to being told no. He is the epitome of rich kid who gets it all. Or as Evey would put it; he is a controlling, domineering and possessive arsehole. Yeah, I really like him and then at times I just wanted him gone.

But to be honest, for now he is - putting the obvious characteristics aside - a total mystery. There are a few glimpses over the course of the book and a big and shiny neon sign at the end of the book that makes you wonder what's really going on. I think there is a lot more than meets the eye.

“Parks was slowly trying to destroy my barricade. He was trying to break down that defence I had built, and I had hoped I was strong enough to keep myself from caving in.”

I absolutely love the development of their relationship. It's a constant struggle with Evey denying him and Wade just barrelling through all her walls. As a result the two are highly combustible together and you can tell they are just made for each other. But it's not all fun, in fact I would most definitely say the book is more in the dark reads category.

My feelings were all over the place with that as well. I alternated between yelling at my kindle and Evey to give in and then I just wanted her to run the other way. Told ya, roller-coaster ride.

I can absolutely see this book will polarise the reading community. Some people will fall head over heels and I guess a few just won't warm up to Evey with her constant push-back and erratic behaviour or they will think Wade is just too much. They are complex and very complicated characters, with mostly reasonable behaviour given where they come from and I for one really appreciate that.

“Do you even have a heart Parks?”
His lips twitched “Do You?”
That was easy. “No.” I said clearly.”

I'm firmly in the head over heels category, but I'm really looking forward to see some other reactions after Denying Mr. Parks is finally published. The current release date is February 20th 2015. Mark it, people!

Thank you so much for this little gem Ms. James, I'm here to stay. Desperately waiting for the next book. Please don't make me wait too long.

Because...that ending?

“If I tell you my past, I’m scared you won’t want my future.”

Evey Banks is a broken woman who has finally made strides to better her life all with the help of her best friend, Steph. Sober for quite some time now, employed (with a bitchy boss), dating her best friend's brother who seems to be interested in starting where they left off and she is happy. At least happier than she has been in a while. She's a complex introvert with a bad attitude who tends to scare people off.
“You’re a woman with a broken smile, Evelyn. I just wish I knew why.”

Her mouth gets her the attention of Mr.Wade Parks, the owner of the company she works for. A man who is not used to the word No and gets whatever it is he wants. Their initial meeting was truly unconventional, with his abrupt cocky demeanor and her inability to control her ire. Every meeting after that has been no holds bar, consequences be damned.
“Don’t fuck with me, Miss Banks.”

“Then don’t fuck with me, Mr. Parks.”

“Oh I will fuck with you,” he grumbled, his eyes sliding down the length of my body. “And you will love every second of it.”

Both are completely taken aback with their reaction to each other and is handling it in totally different ways. Wade pursues her to no end, inserting himself rather forcefully into her life, giving her no reprieve. Evey runs, stumble and falls, she can't figure out why she can't stay away, hating herself for wanting what he has to offer.
“The things that mess us up in life are the fantasies inside our heads telling us how life is meant to be. How life should be. When really, life is a living nightmare.”

Spiraling out of control, she isn't sure what she wants or what to do, but her default reaction is to choose the cowards way out and runs... pushing everyone away. Staying on the path of denial and oblivious, she won't give Wade the credit he is owed for soothing her when nothing else good can.
“Then let me prove to you. If it’s words you need then I’ll give them to you. I’ll write you a whole fucking novel if I have to.”

Denying Mr. Parks is the beginning of Evey and Wade, an explosive-destructive-sexually beginning to an inevitable battle; a battle between heart, body and mind. Evey is a product of her past, not knowing anything but self preservation; not letting anything in giving it no chance to hurt her. She vows to never be put in the position again, but the one she ultimately hates is herself, Wade and Steph are just the closest and easiest targets to push her fear and hate too. Wade came in and tore down all her walls, not knowing the damage he was causing her within.
Fear of happiness. I was a coward. A liar and deceitful. I felt empty. Lonely. A failure. The only person I had to blame was my very worst enemy. Myself.

The beginning was a whirlwind, jumping right in and not holding anything back. Wade is cocky, arrogant and powerfully in control, but the more his feelings for Evey grew, he evolved to be a man of worth. Sure he had his back ass ways of dealing with situations, but underneath all the commands and demands, is the fact that he cares deeply for Evey. He didn't let it scare him, he knows she is constantly on the defensive and will use anything she can to push him away. Letting his actions speak louder than his words.

Evey is one your are going to love or hate, in my opinion, for those who don't take the time to get to know her, but she never pretends to be something she is not. It is her weakness, her inability to deal and cope that brings the realness into the story. Some might even question if she is really worth all the trouble, but everyone needs someone in their corner to stand by them and fight for them. That is how I see my role as the reader is, as much as I might have not agreed with her choices, I had to see it through. It was like watching a collision, just waiting for the destruction.

The story is told from Evey POV and before their story can get any better, it will get a lot worse, they have a long road ahead of them. And I hope in his arms she finds what she is looking for, learn to accept and love herself. Their story begins to explore the need for punishment and control, no hardcore BDSM in it. A wonderful debut novel to a series that I look forward to seeing what happens next.

3-3.5 “impossible sum” STARS

This is Lilly James’ debut novel about an average, young woman and a dominant millionaire. I know, colour me grey, it’s been done many times over. But that’s where the cliché ends. This story was nothing like I expected; it was endearing, bittersweet and refreshing.

Evelyn (Evey) Banks is a 25 year old associate secretary in a law firm and to say she was brash, foul mouthed and abrasive would be an understatement. Harsh words, sarcasm and indifference were her weapons of choice to keep people at arm’s length and herself numb from feeling.

“Exposed and vulnerable is not something I am.
I’m cold and withdrawn and that’s the way I like it.”

Evey's childhood was bleak and hard with drug-addicts for parents. She cowers from affection, she doesn't do relationships only sex as the act without intimacy and she's a recovering alcoholic and drug addict. Evey's now in survival mode. With nine months of sobriety under her belt, she's living with her best friend, Steph, and has a job she likes.

“I am just an average woman in the middle of a billion others. There is nothing extraordinary about me.”
 photo Evey_zpsa1o0wxhn.jpg

Wade Parks is an American millionaire (story takes place in London) who owns the law firm Evey works at among other businesses. Of course, he's gorgeous, domineering and sex-on-a-stick. The minute Parks sees Evey, he must have her and he has no qualms about telling her.

 photo Parks_zpspxryigqi.jpg

I didn't like Parks at first. I'm the first one to swoon over a dominant Alpha but I found his first moves on Evey to be closer to a self-harassment lawsuit waiting to happen. And his words and actions just cheapened Evey rather than built her up. Alas, despite Evey’s bold, angry and abrasive NOs to all of Parks' advances, she wants him, or more accurately, her body wants Parks.

“Your mind is denying me Evelyn. You keep denying me, but your body is accepting every part of me.”

Here ensues a cat and mouse game between Evey and Parks as he tears apart every barrier she puts in his way and unbeknownst to him, he also tears apart her carefully crafted and not so stable foundation.

“I can read your body perfectly, your mind…nothing.”

Evey is not your average woman. She is broken and unhinged and has struggled for the past year to be in a place where things are okay.
 photo Denying_zpsmwnrupde.jpg

As Parks unravels Evey's mind and body, she begins to spiral down into her old habits to escape all the feelings...

Parks is a mystery. He grew on me as it became apparent that even though he doesn't understand it himself, he cares for Evey. One thing about Wade that I can't help but think will unearth more about him is his need for control.

The chemistry and encounters between Evey and Parks are panty-dropping. It's not hard to understand why Evey can't resist him...

I enjoyed this book and I would recommend it. This was a truly original, emotional and touching story. This book ends on a serious cliffy...

and I want the second book.

3 Infuriating Stars

Lilly James gives us an infuriating story with deeply flawed characters, that will either make you love them or hate them. But, in the end, sometimes,  glass houses are meant to be shattered.(For you Mr.Parks)

Evelyn Banks is a by-product of her parents drug and alcohol addictions. A young girl, hardened against the world; remaining emotionless and withdrawn from any form of intimacy, as an adult. Living her life by her own rules, without any exceptions and with absolutely no thought for those close to her. Evelyn is a recovering alcoholic, who has been sober for nine months. Living with her best friend and dating his brother, working as an associate secretary in a renowned law firm, Evelyn has made strides to make a better life for herself.

Evelyn has a seriously bad attitude, she comes off as intense, with her brash words, and take no prisoners persona. She definitely isn't liked by her immediate boss and most, if not all of the women, within her working environment. Her entire demeanor gets the attention of the visiting CEO and owner of Parks Law firm, Mr. Wade Parks himself.

Wade Parks only needed to stay a week to ensure the proper operations of the firm, and do a 'meet and greet' with the staff. But, after meeting Evelyn Banks, this flawless beauty, peaked his interest. Something about her, screamed vulnerability. Her intensity brought out Wade's dominant side. And he was more than ready to play.

“When I want something, I always get it. Right now, what I want is you. I knew it as soon as you introduced yourself to me. And I don't necessarily need to know all about someone to understand that I want them and I won't stop until I have it.”

Even though I wanted to file a personal lawsuit against Mr.Parks, on behalf of Evelyn and myself, his character enticed me to the core. The whispered words, his own intensity, all that alpha-male hotness. The man knew what he wanted and had no qualms about going after it. Even though I thought, for a CEO, who was portrayed as the epitome of professional, Wade Parks was anything but that. This made me lose some appeal with the story itself.

Evelyn's demons shin through when Mr.Parks enters her life. Evelyn is a woman who has tried to be strong her entire life. Living with disappointment after disappointment. Yet, as much as she tried, she realized she was the exact opposite of strong. She was weak. Evelyn was a woman that couldn't cope with emotions. Using her drug of choice, alcohol, to hide and numb her pain. Blistful oblivion. She preferred to hide behind a bottle and run from every and anything remotely close to showing or having emotions, rather than facing her problems and dealing with them.

Hiding and running from her own demons and emotions, made up most of the book, while Wade attempted to get closer to Evelyn. He brought out her inner sexual deviant. Making her lust after spankings, unknown to Wade, these were her form of personal, soul searing punishment. Even if they both got pleasure from the act. Added bonus!

"If I tell you my past, I'm scared you won't want my future."

Told from the heroine's POV, this debut novel is a refreshing and unique read. A story about addiction, loss, infatuation, desire, fear, regret, anger, hatred and self-worth. I had a love hate relationship with these characters. What I loved the most in this story was Evelyn's portrayal as an innocent child, forced into emotional and physical turmoil by the persons that was supposed to love her. Evey also infuriated me throughout the novel, with her constant up and down, push and pull attitude. We also see where keys factors in the novel affects Mr. Parks when they are revealed. Clearly, we know their is more depth to Mr.Parks and his very own past. I am looking froward to either a dual POV or Mr. Parks POV in the 2nd book.

Fear of happiness. I was a coward. A liar and deceitful. I felt empty. Lonely. A failure. The only person I had to blame was my very worst enemy. Myself.

Can a broken and damaged woman be healed? Through time, maybe. But what happens when an explosive force comes knocking down walls and pushing the limits? Will the push and pull dynamic set a whirlwind of destruction or will it be the saving grace? In Denying Mr. Parks, Ms. Lilly James truly captures her readers attentions as she delicately pulls the strings of the hearts of her readers as we feel the emotional struggle of a heroine trying to staying afloat while battling her demons and her heart.

#parks

Evelyn Banks is her worst enemy. She is in fact a recovering addict who is trying to get her life back in order. So when she meets Wade Parks, her life is turn upside down. Parks is everything that she knows must stay away. He is cocky, arrogant and dominant. He is the trouble that Evelyn knows she must stay away but the only problem is that she couldn't since Wade pursues her endlessly. The sexual chemistry was thoroughly evident and tangible between the two. But as walls begins to crumble, secrets and truths begins to unravel causing Evelyn to question her feelings. Wade begins to make her feel but the problem is that these feelings begins to resurface old wounds and fears causing her to retreat back to what she only knows that can temporarily heal and numb her. So will Wade be the one to help her from the darkness and save her from her demons? Or will Evelyn's truth be the destruction on the downfall of her relationship with Parks? Is he the destruction or salvation?

Denying Mr. Parks ends in a cliff-hanger and definitely has me wanting to get my hands on the second installment. Ms. James did a remarkable job in luring her readers to FEEL all the emotions from emptiness, hope, love, disappointment, lust, carnal desire, and heartbreak. In this heart-tugging read, Ms. James highlighted an imperfect person trying to get their life in order. And what I love about this book is that this book did not show a perfect or romantic fairy tale but a gritty side of loving a person who is battling with addiction and their demons. Love is not perfect and so Denying Mr. Parks shows the ugly sides of addiction and the emotional turmoil and battle of a couple trying to survive the darkness that plagues them.

1 ★ for the storyline + 1 ★ for Wade + 1 ★ for the smexy times – 1.5 ★ for Evey = 1.5 ★

I was just really frustrated with this one. As in really frustrated!!! Especially with Evey, the h!!! Gah!!! Sigh… And seriously, how many times can you say “whilst”?!? Apparently, 123 times! Sigh…

While this is a storyline that I know I would have enjoyed thoroughly albeit not original, there were just too many things I couldn’t ignore. Mind you, this is getting a lot of high reviews so you might think that I may just be out to lunch with my thoughts, and that’s fine by me:D I thought Evey’s backstory was such a good fodder for some serious angst and Wade and his dominating ways will add further layer. But sadly, for me, no.

As I delve further into the story, all I can think of is sexual harassment and insubordination. 2 things that no one ever wants to deal with at work. But Evey and Wade are doing it left, right and centre here. Oy!

More importantly though, my biggest gripe with this one is Evey. I’m really sorry, but for all of Evey’s painful past, I just couldn’t muster enough empathy for her. I thought she was bordering on rude and obnoxious in some scenes. She has too much edge that I didn’t understand. I think some of her actions were meant to be seen as endearing but it just came across as childish. And that confusing hot/cold treatment she gives to Wade, all the lies and deception to her friends… no, just no!! >.< I expect traits like that from the villain or a heroine in contemporary fiction but not in my romance reads (just call me cray!)

And because of that, I honestly don’t know why Wade went thru lengths to accommodate her. His patience felt unappreciated. And with him having to keep coming back to her, despite the abrasive treatment from her, it made me question his character. Therefore, it goes without saying, I never really bought into their “relationship”. Real shame…

I trudged thru the story up until 80-ish% mark then I just skimmed thru the rest. I just stopped caring what happen to Evey, plain and simple. And Wade was not enough to save the day, so to speak. So in short, I believe I’m done with this… you think? O.o

4 stars. This was a great debut from Ms. James. I always love coming across new authors and even better when I love their work! On the surface, the story seemed like one that has been done numerous times. Uber-dominant millionaire CEO is awestruck by the executive assistant working at his firm. He makes it known that he must have her and she puts up a fight at every turn. I have to admit, I'm a sucker for that plot and sometimes it works out and other times it does not. This time it definitely worked out for me and I think it was because there was so much more to Evey(h) than what I first assumed. She is definitely damaged having been raised by alcoholic and drug addicted parents. And now as a grown woman is a recovering alcoholic herself. My heart hurt for everything she endured in her life and when she would make awful choices throughout the book, I was cringing.

Wade Parks is the controlling and protective hero that is sort of obsessed with Evey. At times, he annoyed me with his barking orders at her, but I loved the way she always put up a fight. There are definitely some kinky elements to this book and Wade and Evey's chemistry was smoking hot!!

There were some grammatical errors, but it didn't take away from the enjoyment of my read. All in all, it was a great first book. I'm not sure how many are planned b/c it's really not like me to read without knowing what I'm getting myself into. I typically wait for the complete series before diving in, but that blurb got me and sucked me in. Now...I'm off to stalk the author and see what I can find out! :-)

DNF at 30%.

I am a huge fan of dark erotica. This one was not pulling my attention at all. I couldn't find a connection to the characters from any point in the book. The writing was good, but it wasn't working for me.

You know the biggest cliche in the world?
"It's not you, it's me"?
That's what I feel like saying now, after reading this. "It's not you, it's me."

This was recommended by a great friend I found on GR and she was sure I'll love it. I was sure i will too, because we have similar taste in books, so imagine my surprise.

I definitely didn't hate it and saying I didn't like it makes me feel like a liar, so.....
Let me explain.

Meet Evelyn Banks and Wade Parks.
She's working as an assistant secretary at Parks Law Firm.
He's a rich American tycoon who comes to check things in his London company and when he sees Evelyn and of course he decides he wants her.

The book is called "Denying Mr. Parks", right? Well, it's the most perfect title ever for this. Why? Because all book you'll hear something like:

Him: "I want to fuck you, Evelyn. You'll be mine. I want to posses you."
Her: "NO! Leave me alone. Get away from me. I don't want you."

Besides that, here are other things that didn't work for me:

1. I really don't like weak, secretive heroes/heroines. The feminist in me yells that I'm mainly talking about the women in my books. Evelyn is an alcoholic, ex drug addict, her parents being the same and she had a life full of misery, pain and nobody to show her affection. Ok, I get it. It's tough. She says she's been sober for 9 months, but you'll see her drunk more than once. Of course, she's lying to everyone saying she's fine and sober.

2. Mr. Parks definitely has his own demons to fight. I felt something was wrong with him all book, to get some kind of confirmation in the end.

3. All this chase. "Yes". "No." "Yes". "No." "Yes". "No." "Yes". "No." "Yes". "No." "Yes". "No."

4. There's sexual attraction between them. I felt you and if you read the book you will too. So he takes advantage of that and "forces" himself on Evelyn. They even get to have sex a couple of times. What does she do? The moment it's over she runs away. Each and every time.

5. Alex. Evelyn lives with her best friend, Steph, who wants her to be with her brother, Alex. Alex is good and kind, but Evelyn doesn't feel anything for him. What does she do? She plays with him. Accepts to go on dates with him, kisses him and in my opinion, simply leads him on. Not cool.

6. The end. I think you can call it a cliffhanger, since Steph

7. The writing. Not bad, but things like "sinking deeply into my slick channel with his hard length" made me burst into laughing.

Now, there where some good things too. I won't lie. I got aroused a couple of times, because Mr. Parks is a controlling, dominant, possessive alpha male and as Evelyn said:
"I could tell that under that expensive suit was a recipe for woman's hormonal eruption."

I also appreciated the fact that he tried very hard to have Evelyn, but at some point it got frustrating and sort of demeaning to chase a woman you don't even know, who keeps telling you no, who keeps telling you to "fuck off".

So basically, I feel like there's just something wrong with me, not this book. Since it's FREE ON AMAZON you should definitely try it and make your own opinion about it.

I have to say I love reading books that are written by English authors. It has to be the small things like how the language is different that takes me to a special place. Isn't that the point of reading and I love finding new authors that spark my fancy.

I don't know there is just something about referring to the trunk of the car as a boot. Then factor into the mix the boot of a Red Ferrari………..

Let me just say that the car is bad ass, but the man behind the car is the real key to the story!!

Wade Parks is everything that Evelyn know she needs to avoid and yet she can’t stay away from him. Evelyn has just started to pick up the pieces of her life and move forward when Mr. Parks and his controlling and dominant self walks into her place of work. It is evident right from the bat that these two have an uncontrollable chemistry, but the real question is how will they be able to stay apart.

“If we had something, Parks, it would be flammable.” “Then let’s ignite the flame.”

The real problem is that Evelyn has huge walls to protect herself from a past that was full of disappointment and heartbreak that leaves her with fearing an real emotions. Wade seems to be the one thing that causes Eve to feel again and well that could be a great thing, but things never come easy for Eve. Around each corner she struggles with her emotions and the intensity of the connection and it triggers her to resort back to her former comforts. Alcohol is the one thing that calms her nerves and helps relieve the pain for a moment, but the negatives far outweigh the instant relief.

“Fear traps people, Evelyn, because it is a threat that seems unbeatable. But until you become fearless, only then can you conquer your dreams.”

Wade is the one person that forces Eve to even consider her future and well that is full of challenges it is bittersweet. They bring out amazing things in one another, but they both have a secrets from their pasts that will cause them fight for their beginning. Can a glimpse of the roots of Eve’s past stop things before they even start?

“I was a coward. A liar and deceitful. I felt empty. Lonely. A failure. The only person I had to blame was my very worst enemy. Myself.”

I so can’t wait to get my hands on the second installment in the series and I only have a little over a week to wait!!

WOW!
An emotional, raw read.
This is the first book from Lilly James and it drew all kinds of emotions from me.
I couldn't even get the words out....

This book is not for the faint of heart. It's emotional and not everyone will get it.
Those that do, will be taken on an emotional ride. My emotions are all over the map on this book and I know it will haunt me for a long time. I can't wait for the next book in this series. I'll be putting everything else aside for that!

One stars are rare from me these days, but unfortunately I couldn't even with this book...

Starting with the heroine...I find Evey completely innaproachable as a character, I felt no connection with her. She was quite rude in my opinion, the way she demoralized all her work collegues. I don't know if it was meant to be funny, but she just sounded like an awful person. No matter how right she was, she gave me the impression of a hollier than thou attitude towards them.

And Mr. Parks...can I say innapropriate??? I mean, I LOVE CEO books and dark erotica. I love bossy heroes, but Wade Parks was not one of those, from the first minute he met Evey. He was a borderline bully and quite obnoxious too...

Now to the writing, I can't help to feel like this book needed a better editing. Not only for the grammar mistakes, but for structure ones as well. I mean, the story is told from the heroine's POV but some of the things she described she couldn't know unless she was inside the other character's mind, like the author is. So to me this 1st person POV was mixed with a 3rd person POV, which ends up being a mess...

If maybe at least the hero was written differently I could have liked it a bit, but the guy was almots creepy in the way he treated her from the first time they met. I would have run away from him instead of wanting him, which is something so very rare for me when it comes to male characters. I LOVE the jerks and I usually love the characters most peple would hate.

Unfortunately I couldn't get past these things to like the story. Evey has a troubled past, but I didn't like her enough to sympathize with it. To me the main characters, plus Evey's best friend, were unlikeable and that mixed with a story that wasn't executed quite fittingly resulted in me not liking the book at all. Which is a shame because the premisse is good and from the blurb it seemed like a good story.

If you love a HOT and sexy ALPHA male, you must one-click Denying Mr. Parks right now.
Wade Parks is one yummy and determined HUNK of a man. In this first installment in The Parks Series we're taken through a steamy journey full of ups and downs that make up Evey (Evelyn) and Wade's story.

Evey is broken. She has inner demons she fights on a daily basis and has made herself an expert in keeping people at bay, especially men. But you see, Wade Parks is not a man that takes 'no' for an answer. He's determined to make Evey his and soon enough he would accomplish his goal. Evey can only hold off for so long. Now mind you, she wasn't weak or a pushover (huge plus for me - I love strong heroines!!), but the inevitable can only be put off so long... And with the way Parks pursues her?? Sheesh! You cannot blame the girl for giving in!! He's quite the naughty man. *wink*

While this book definitely leans towards the hot and steamy side of things, it also covers a serious subject: addiction. Evey's secret is one she works VERY hard to keep just that: a secret. When things begin to unveil, the page-turning action becomes inevitable!

And then, the end happens....
Holy cliffhanger, Batman! Is book two READY Ms James???!!!! Because I need more of Mr Parks and Ms Banks! Go one-click, HEA readers! DENYING MR. PARKS is a well-written book that will keep your interest intact from beginning to end! Four Stars!

Arghhhh, this book!

It is littered with mistakes. ... spelling, grammar, incorrect words, missing words. This made it really frustrating to read. I ended up looking for the inevitable next mistake rather than being able enjoy the story.

The book is in SERIOUS need of editing.

I also noticed that that feel of the book and some actual scenes play more than a passing resemblance to a couple of other books which didn't sit hugely well with me.

Great intro. Parks guy is a bit annoying, but I think that's exactly how these characters should be. Lilly James described everything great, and all the characters are special on their own way. Evey and Parks are going to have an emotional rollercoaster obviously. I continued this series so I'll tell everything later :)

This review has been a long time coming. I just actually finished the book since life got in the way and I couldn't better manage my time. I started this book two weeks ago and got to about 50% of it but eventually stopped, then resumed earlier last night and finished the rest of it in one go.

I don't know where to start actually, cause I really have a lot to say.

Caution: I haven't done a long review in a long time, but this one will be very long and may contain spoilers. :)

"I would rather be heartless than heartbroken."

As much as I want to hate Evelyn, I don't think I can. Frustrated with her, maybe, but she's just getting by her own way with all her "issues" and that makes her just another human trying to "survive" another day. The people she surrounds herself with though, she could do better without.

"The things that mess up in life are the fantasies inside our heads telling us how life is meant to be. How life should be. When really, life is a living nightmare."

Wade Parks, not necessarily Evelyn's boss, but the founder of the firm she works in. Another one of those rich "heroes" with a screwed up way of living and thinks they can get whatever the hell the want just because they can. Parks, as Evey likes to call him, is confusing as the heroine but can be really sweet when he puts his mind to it. LOL

"And you will be mine. even if I have to fight you for you."

If you think I hate Parks, I didn't, until in the end where he.... well, you have to find out what he did to make me go Anti-Wade-Parks on him. But throughout the book, he was hot and cold which was, for me, a good thing cause it made Evelyn on her toes and convincing her of opening up her horizons a bit. At least that's what I think.

As a recovering alcoholic for nine months, I think Evey was a bit confined. Home-work-home-work. I think that was her routine and it was keeping her in focus but I think she isn't "living" at all, just trying to "survive" each day and is giving into the pressure that others are putting onto her, especially her best friend.

"You haven't told him? Of course you haven't. Because you lie don't you, Evey? You lie and manipulate people so it suits you!"

Steph is Evelyn's "awful" best friend. I think she is awful because she doesn't ask Evelyn what she wants at all. As a friend, I think the most you would do would be to talk to your friend, to be there for them when they need you, and to listen. I think the reason why Evey doesn't talk to Steph in most cases here is because she was afraid to be judged, and judge DID Steph do. Not only that, she was pressuring Evey to date her brother and has this fucked up fantasy of being her sister-in-law in the future, not even cringing when she thinks her best friend is having sex with her brother. Yes, and I cannot think of anymore synonyms to tell you how messed up that is in another way.

Also, Steph had the nerve to give it to Evelyn but she is also confused as to where she was. She had a boyfriend who she didn't want and was always complaining and moaning about, and has a bad habit of collecting junk and scraps. She at least could admit to herself she has a problem as well, not just observing what mistakes Evey will be doing next, because that's what I think Steph is doing, she was watching Evey and waiting for her to slip up. So to conclude, Steph is just fucked up and selfish. At least Evelyn admits she's an alcoholic, how about her? And don't get me started on Alex, Julian, and Carla. *smh*

"Then let me prove to you. If it's words you need then I'll give them to you. I'll write you a whole fucking novel if I have to."

Back to Evelyn and Wade. So Wade wants Evelyn for more than just the sex, and Evelyn wants nothing to do with him because she doesn't want to feel emotions and get heartbroken. She's afraid and confused and every single time, she pushes Wade away. Wade is stubborn, he wants Evelyn and thinks she's his now but goes cold and distant when he chases her and realizes this. And this goes back and forth to the point where it becomes irritating and exhausting.

And with all these pressures and her issues, Evelyn succumbs to what she fears the most. She fears she will be like her parents, that she will be just like another addict who went back to her addictions, and ironically, she did. And they all left her in the end.

If I were Evelyn, I'd tell them all to shove it and fuck off instead of being sorry for herself. I stand by what I said earlier, she is better off without them. Maybe not Parks and her aunt and uncle, but the rest of them she could have done without. Why? Because as a person without any addictions whatsoever, if people push you and pressure you into doing stuff you don't want and messes up with the way you think things should be, it's only a matter of time where one will go off the rails, and that's what happened to Evelyn.

"Sometimes it's easier to be strong because it seems so hard when you're weak."

Ms. Lilly James book, by the end of it, will make you want more. I honestly could do without the grammatical errors, and too long unnecessary descriptions, but I surely can't wait to read the next succeeding books because she's still hiding a lot of Evelyn's issues, Wade's issues, and those mysterious glimpses wherein Evelyn thinks she's being followed. And I also can't wait for the enemies to follow through all their threats to her and Wade saves the day, that's what I'm looking forward the most, I think.

Denying Mr. Parks is one hell of a book. This is one full of messed up characters and confusing personalities that would make you want to throttle them all to oblivion. However, I think it is because of these characters that I think I fell in too deep with the story and made this book (what's the word?) "effective", I guess? I'm not sure, but in reading through the book I got to feel anxious, giddy, disgusted, angry, and had the occasional laugh-out-loud moments.

I admit I had some preconceived judgments going into this book. New author, rich business man, office girl, dominate male, weak submissive female. Man was I wrong, this was a brilliant book, well written, emotionally driven characters, passionate scenes, head strong introverted woman, controlling yet very protective alpha male who has a sensitive side to him. This book blew me out of the water and left me with a major book hangover. I was beating myself up for leaving this on my kindle unread for those few days, if I had known what was between those pages I would have dropped life to get into this story ASAP.
You have heard of people who build walls around themselves for protection, well Evelyn has multiple layers of walls that no one is going to penetrate. She has had a hard life with two addicts as parents, she struggles with her own addictions and she is the queen of pushing people away and reminding herself why she is a horrible person. She works in a law firm and lives with her friend, trying to get a second chance at life and is doing a good job at it till Mr. Parks comes to inspect his company. The way she keeps people at a safe distance is to appear cold, ruthless, mean and stubborn, that usually works but Wade Parks sees something beyond that. He sees her curves, her sex appeal, and her beauty and knows this is one fragile young woman hiding behind a wall of barbed wire. He is determined to break her defenses down and get to her soul.
Wade, who hates it when she calls him Parks, is egotistic, arrogant, forceful, controlling and one of the sweetest, protective men I have read about. He has substance, patience and determination. He knows with one touch he controls her body, but even he realizes he is going to have to chase her to get to her mind and heart. He listens to her when she tells him little crumbs of her past life with her family and he searches to replace those missing items she yearns for now. He pays attention to what music she likes, the dresses she looks at but can’t buy. He wants to show her how to be loved and when she tells him words is what she pays attention to, he offers to write her a novel to express how he feels. When her friend finally has enough of Evelyn’s behavior and the first of many secrets come out, the whole world of Wade and Evelyn collapses and we go to cliff hanger, waiting for the next book and more clues to the mysteries still remaining.
Did I mention book hangover? Well I am suffering. Lilly James not only described Evelyn and Wade and all of the other characters so well, I felt I was living each of their parts. I so get Evey, I understand that the risk of abandonment and pain once again could be the crushing blow. I understand feeling that as soon as someone sees you vulnerable they will attack. As she said, if he finds out her past will he want to be part of her future? Wade, he isn’t the alpha male that had everything handed to him. We don’t know all of his secrets but from the way he acted when he learned a bit more about Evey it is clear he has been hurt as well, but he was still willing to risk his heart for love. The author gave us hints as to why punishment and control was a driving need for him, not a fetish or kink, but as important as the oxygen he breathes. Those two are perfect for each other, if they would get out of the way and let love and trust grow. So here is my warning, if you don’t like being left emotionally raw after a cliff hanger, then you want to get this book and wait for the complete series because you will be raw when you finish the last page. If you are like me and love the reality of the emotions and waiting like the characters have to wait to find resolution, then GET IT NOW……….I am so impressed with this author, she is certainly on my watch list because I think she has a great future ahead of her in the book world.

“I looked up into his suggestive brown eyes and saw what gave me the hots for him in the first place. But I couldn’t go back to the past, and Travie had too many demons to remind me of. I shook my head and shifted away.”

4 stars. This was a refreshing take on an almost “Grey” like book. Great debut novel from Lilly! Excited to see what she comes out with next!

Evey is a secretary at a law firm, she’s quit witted and super sassy, which I loved! She’s not big on affection and she doesn’t do relationships. Did I also mention she’s a recovering drug addict and alcoholic. She’s fighting to survive everyday, and it’s a struggle as you can imagine. Wade is a millionaire, and owns the law firm that Evey works for. When Wade sees/meets Evey he wants her and he’s not shy in telling her so. Once in his grasps, she fights like h@ll to stay away, but even she can admit, that she can’t stay away. He slowly starts to break down her walls against Evey’s better wishes. This book was so amazingly well written and the characters are beyond likeable and yeah, I loved the book!!

Evey Banks is a 25 year old secretary in a law firm. Her childhood was a bleak one with parents who weren’t the best and addicted to drugs to boot. As an addict herself now, life is tough and with 8 months of sobriety behind her she is trying very hard to get herself back on track.

Wade Parks owns the law firm where Evey works. Once he sets his sights on her he wants her in every way and he lets her know this too. Wade is hot, and with an American accent to compliment his sexiness he is a dream catch.

I loved how Wade pursued Evey. The way he orchestrated catching her and ensuring he knocked down all her barriers won my heart over. It was exactly what she needed and you could see why she found his personality and body hard to resist.

I was sad at the fact Evey used her addiction to control the emotions she was feeling from the fact that Wade was winning her over. I would totally advise you to pick this book up. Lilly James done an excellent job with this book and kept me entirely captivated the whole way through.

A warning to you all would be that this book ends on a cliffhanger and you will have a serious book hangover afterwards. It is safe to say that I need book two now!!

***** 5 HUGE STARS FOR YOU LILLY! *****

I could not put this book down, but when I did all I thought about was Evelyn and Wade. What was going to happen next?

I connected from page one with Evey, although I wasn't too keen on Steph! I agreed with Evey in the beginning, that Wade Parks was an obnoxious assclown! But I soon warmed to him and started swooning!

Even though I finished the book yesterday I'm still thinking about the characters now, that's how much they effected me.

I loved the way the relationship built up was great, you could feel the sexual tension through the pages. Wade made it perfectly clear what he was after but Evey? Evey was still battling inner demons, and didn't feel herself worthy.

That end oh my good lord above! You have some explaining to do Miss James!! You almost got sent my bill for a new kindle :-P.

I can't wait for the next instalment!

Well done Lilly!

RATED A SOLID 4 STARS!!!

The wealthy CEO, Wade Parks and the recovering alcoholic executive assistant, Evelyn make Denying Mr. Parks a very entertaining book. There is never a dull moment with these two, while Evey is hiding her past and current activities from her co-workers, friends, family and Mr. Park. Mr. Park is actively persuing Evey, for reasons that are even unknown to himself.

This book illustrated some of the ugly sides of addiction from the lying, hiding and hurt that it causes. I thought that some of the situations that occurred at work may have been stretched a bit, especially in how employees were disciplined. However, in no way did this take away from the story or me wanting to read more. I'm ready for Addicted to Mr. Parks!

Denying Mr. Parks by Lilly James was definitely an interesting storyline. It starts with Evelyn Banks who works at a law firm. She meets the CEO of the company, Wade Banks, and that's when the real story starts. He is a dominating, controlling, bastard who also happens to be super hot and Evelyn keeps trying to push him away. She knows nothing good will come of even thinking about being with him. The storyline keeps you intrigued although there are times I felt Evelyn should either really stay away from him or give in, instead of teetering between being with him or Alex, her best friend's brother. It ends with a cliffhanger, and I can't wait to see what happens in the next one. Evelyn's secrets come out in the end, but I feel like Wade Parks his hiding some of his own.

Wow...this book is so well written, the last chapter especially. I'm sitting here with my heart in my throat downloading the next book. I warn you it's a cliffhanger but omg it's the best cliffhanger I've read in a very long time! The flow of the story and the chemistry between the characters is great. Onto the next book.
