The Tyranny of our Longing

I feel like gothic fiction has this tendency to be sorta vague and metaphorical. Look, I love gothic everything. But I also like when I can understand a book and not have to reread chapters just so I’m not confused. Sadly, that was the case with this.
This is my understanding of the book. I’m gonna mark this as spoilers just in case.
The setting is Victorian England. Phaedra Mercer, an encaustic painter, is hired by heir Nathaniel to create a series of paintings depicting scenes and people from his sister’s diary, which survived a house fire. Nathaniel has a condition where he cannot understand what he reads or visualize the words on paper, and he wants to know what happened to his family that died in the mysterious fire, so he is using Phaedra’s wax paintings as a medium to sorta glean the past. However, Phaedra starts to lose track of time and seems to know things she shouldn’t know and she has an obsession with the green wallpaper and a green dress.
My assumption is that this is a case of arsenic wallpaper, which was super common in the Victorian era (it’s called Scheele’s Green and it’s a super fascinating phenomena), along with a Scheele’s Green dress.
However, like Nathaniel, I have no idea what was going on besides that. Who was his sister’s lover? I legit thought it was their father based on the diary… What the heck happened at the end? Was it actually a case of arsenic and copper and “madness”? I don’t know.
This was an interesting little novella that I feel is gothic at the most shallowest level. Thank you again to the author for an arc!

This wasn’t what I expected at all.
The writing style felt very new to me—unique, but sometimes a bit vague. I found myself re-reading certain sentences just to fully understand what the author meant. I’m not sure if that’s because I’m not used to this style or if it was intentionally written that way, but it did affect my reading experience at times.
As for the characters, I kept feeling like there was more to them that we didn’t get to see. I was especially hoping for deeper insight into their pasts—particularly Phaedra—but that depth never fully came, which was a bit disappointing.
That said, the story itself really delivered. The plot was unexpected from the very beginning, and the twists kept coming in a way that felt fresh and engaging. It was refreshing to see such a feeling conveyed in this way. I’m trying not to spoil anything, but the title gives away more than you might initially think.
Despite the writing style being a bit challenging at times, I still found myself enjoying the book. I was curious, engaged, and never bored—I just wish the characters had been explored more deeply so I could connect with them better.

Our main character, Phaedra, agrees to take on a unique painting commission for the newly inherited owner of Brackenhurst Hall, Nathaniel Hawthorn. Right off the bat, we see that there is something eerie about this half-burned house and a mystery to be solved as Phaedra circles ever closer to the truth of its ghosts… and ever closer to a simmering desire that feels more and more like madness.
This book evoked gothic mansions, tragic family pasts, hidden passions, and through it all, a thread of darkness in shades of emerald green. I loved that Phaedra is several years older than Nathaniel and their yearning was exquisitely painful in the best way. This is one of those stories that make you want more and wish that more would be revealed but at the same time, the atmosphere evoked gothic classics and you will be transported to a different time!

The Deadly Obsession
Reading this book left me absolutely spellbound; and, quite frankly, terrified. It is terrifyingly brilliant how the author managed to perfectly capture the essence of the Victorian era, a time when a mere fashion and decor obsession literally dictated the lives and fates of the characters.
It is both stunning and deeply fascinating to see how an entire, gripping story could be woven from nothing more than a single color. The historical accuracy mixed with the eerie atmosphere of the green-stained obsession kept me hooked from start to finish.
A magnificent achievement. Huge congratulations to the author for crafting such a hauntingly beautiful masterpiece!

What a ride! I enjoyed this book. It was myserious and there were so many twists and turns, you never really know what is going to happen next. The time period is also my favorite. Phaedra is a painter who arrives at Nathanel's manor and is tasked with painting portraits to find out what exactly happened in the family fire. During her time there, she has a burning desire to be with Nathaniel, but learns that the green fabric is the reason for her desire through reading the half-burned journal of Nathaniel's sister. In the end, they escape and the house burns to the ground, the desires fading with it.

Loved this gothic romantic mystery! The language (like the title) draws the reader along on the same journey of longing as the MCs, sentences peeling back layers of mystery like the wallpaper that lines both house and story… I only wish the journey had been longer and we’d gotten more of Phaedra and Nathaniel. Could there be a sequel (please)? I also loved that the FMC was an accomplished, professional artist in 1880 – no typical ‘damsel in distress.’ Her eye for decaying beauty, and the beauty of the (younger!) MMC, was delicious to read. If you like lyrical language and dark gothic vibes this book has both in abundance. Recommend!

The author did a beautiful job painting the picture of the surroundings, the FMC and the issues surrounding her. While I do like lyrical writing, at times it found myself skimming to get to the dialogue or internal discussion.
If you enjoy beautiful prose, reminiscent of the old days of writing, gothic architecture and spooky vibes, you’ll love this book.
Be aware this is not a typical romance even though there is a strong undertone.

In a word: gothic. This book is giving all the moody historical romance vibes you might want. It’s giving Crimson Peak but in book form. It’s lyrical prose that hints at a deeper, almost spooky, mystery. It’s a steamy (not spicy) MF romance that embraces strong emotion. It’s an exploration into the concepts of art and beauty. Heads up though, while this is a love story, the ending is not a normal one. But then again, nothing about this book is ‘normal.’ It doesn’t say, it implies. It teases and leaves you guessing. And it’s sadly over before you can blink.

I honestly wasn't sure what to expect from this book.
Victorian Gothic Romance can bring SO much variance.
But I was blown away.
The story grips you and keeps you in its hold until the many moments you realize you've been holding your breath, fearful of the next line, entranced by the story.
I will definitely be reading more of Miranda Faye

This book was really interesting to me. I’m always drawn to a good gothic setting, and this one absolutely delivered on the atmosphere. There were a few moments where I felt a little confused about what was happening, but overall I still enjoyed the plot and wanted to see how everything unfolded.
The writing itself flowed really well and made it easy to stay immersed in the story. The eerie, gothic vibe throughout the book was probably my favorite part and kept me intrigued from beginning to end!
