I was raised in the dark, sharpened into a weapon, and sent into the mortal world to secure my coven's future.
The Southern Kingdom holds secrets, and I will uncover them. But it holds my past—Cage, the man who slaughtered my mother, now stands as the King's most trusted mage.
Stronger. Colder. Alive.
She was supposed to be dead. A ghost from an old life. But Millicent walks these halls, her power coiled like a snake beneath her skin. She is everything I was warned about—ruthless, dangerous, a disciple of a monster.
Yet the North stirs. Something ancient is waking in its shadows. The land rots beneath their touch, and the dead do not stay buried. Whispers of unnatural creatures and the undead spread like wildfire.
Whatever they are building, it is beyond magic—it is beyond war.
We are enemies. But something darker stirs beneath our feet, a threat neither of us can face alone. The past is a noose tightening around us, dragging old truths to the surface.
I should kill him. I should destroy her. But if we do, we may not survive.
The North is coming.

**Audiobook Review** OMFG. I didn't think it was possible to love this book even more than I already did, but with Cassandra's writing and the amazing work of these narrators, this book was brought to life in a way I didn't even know was possible.
The female narrator did an incredible job of capturing Millicent's attitude and hidden vulnerabilities, while also somehow bringing so much life to Ollie and the other characters. I was actually giddy hearing Ollie for the first time. I love that little imp so much, I might actually never recover if anything happens to him in the books to come.
And then the male narrator... I was absolutely blown away by how well Cage's character was captured. It was pretty much exactly how I thought he would be in my head when I read this through the first time. His give-no-fucks attitude comes through so well, and the banter and spicy scenes with Millicent had me floored. It was just perfect. And on top of that, when chapter 43 rolled around, it had my jaw on the floor. I can't believe the skill and heart behind the voices in this audiobook, and you can guarantee I will be grabbing up the audio for the next books as well.
These characters live rent-free in my head, and I couldn't be happier to have their voices in there now too lol
Thank you so much to the author, Cassandra M.D., and Podium Entertainment for allowing me to listen to this as an ALC!!
**Original Review** I don't think I can accurately describe how much I loved this book. From the very first page, I knew I was going to love it—and I did. Truly. The author takes you through SO MUCH in this read, and every moment has a purpose.
Starting off, I was obsessed with the world-building and lore. It’s incredibly unique, well thought out, and beautifully described. The details are stunning, and I could picture the world perfectly. Some of the imagery in these passages was unreal. I love being uncomfortable when I read horror, and this HIT THE MARK every time. While it’s more than just horror, those elements fit seamlessly into the story and the world the author is creating.
The characters will make you want to scream, cry, laugh, and throw your book or Kindle across the room—only for you to crawl right back to it for more. I know I did.
Millicent is not what she projects to the outside world, and only a few select people can see the truth. She’s traumatized, brainwashed, and ashamed of feeling anything beyond what she was taught. At times, I was so incredibly frustrated with her—and Cage—but it only took a moment of reflection to understand why she acted and thought the way she did. You want her to break free so fucking bad, but she’s stuck and doesn’t even know it. It will drive you insane, but the story is worth every second.
And then there’s Cage. You want to hate him, but you can’t—because, just like Millicent, he has his own demons and trauma to overcome. They hate each other so good though, so is it really that bad? Yes and no. You can see Cage’s resolve slowly crumble as he tries to reach Millicent, and you’ll find yourself screaming internally for him to just get there already. But the story wouldn’t be complete without the way the two of them revolve around each other.
Beware the deliciously cruel cliffhanger. It caught me completely off guard. There I was, manically flipping through my Kindle when, all of a sudden, I hit the acknowledgements. The gasp I let out when I realized it was over, and I had to wait for the next book, was tragic. I was so absorbed I didn’t even notice I was near the end.
Now, please excuse me while I take 5–10 business days to recover and cope with my pressing need for book 2.
I was lucky enough to be chosen for an ALC, so thank you Cassi for giving me the opportunity to review it and for trusting my opinions! It took me a week to finish the audio, which clocked in at just under 15.5 hours. Anyway, here are my thoughts:
Narration Performance (4.5/5): From a performance standpoint, the narrators did an excellent job at bringing the characters to life. Both used distinct voices to differentiate the characters they narrated, which I can always appreciate. I thought Christine did the characters justice, especially Millie and Ollie. Her voices for both of them were perfect. My only gripe about the narration is that I didn’t think Kayden’s voice fit Cage’s character. That is, it wasn’t how I imagined Cage to sound. But that’s more of a preference/expectation on my end and not necessarily reflective of the narrator’s performance.
Pacing (5/5): The pacing of the audio was great. No awkward pauses, none of the scenes felt rushed or glazed over, and I felt as engaged listening to the audio as much as I did when I read the book itself.
Character interpretation (4/5): Again, this all goes back to preference. I had imagined Cage to be dark, broody, and tormented, especially considering his past and his trauma. I didn’t think Kayden’s interpretation nailed that exactly, but the elements (weight, tone, and sharp, controlled tones when speaking to Millie) were there. I just think a little more could’ve been done.
Emotional Impact (5/5): Listen, if there was one thing this audiobook did well, it was the emotional weight that the voices of the narrators lent to the characters. Not just during the heartfelt or emotionally devastating moments, but in the lighter, humorous points too. I laughed, I felt anxious, and I felt angry (mostly at Millie because she’s a brat and the narrator captured that very well). The story felt much more vivid with the audio; it brought it to life.
Overall listening experience (4.5/5): There really isn’t much to critique with this audiobook, and what little gripes I had were minimal and really comes down to preference. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to supplement reading along with the book for a more immersive experience.
Thank you sooo much to Cassandra M.D. and Podium Audio for the opportunity to listen to this as an ALC! All my opinions and thoughts are my own and left voluntarily.
GUYS. ARE WE SURPRISED THAT IT WAS A 5 STAR FOR ME?! I devoured this audiobook sooo quickly that I didn't realize it was over until I heard the end credits😂.
Being able to listen to this and do a reread of this book (it's GOD TIER for me) was probably the highlight of this month. I literally dropped all my current reads as soon as this slid into my hands.
The audiobook made me even love this book even more and I didn't think that could happen. Cassandra M.D's writing is so descriptive and addictive that getting to hear my favorite quotes (and I had a lot) was truly the best part of listening to this.
I have talked about how much I love this book so much, so let me at least tell you what I thought of the audiobook!
I kid you not, the audiobook brought this book even more to life. I love Christine Forsythe and Kayden Lukakis! They were perfectly casted.
Kayden really brought Cage to life and I'm assuming chapter 43!? My jaw.... DROPPED. I didn't know who to picture as Cage when I heard the audiobook was coming. However, the moment I heard the raspiness in his voice?! SOLD.
Christine was AMAZING. Not only did she do a phenomenal job bringing Milicent to life, but also Ollie! I think she made me love Ollie even more. Christine's inflection and tone of voice was perfect in portraying Milicent's complex character.
Despite it being a dual narration, the story is so immersive and narrators did well to keep the reader engaged.
I will continue to scream it out to the world, but EVERYONE needs to read this and soon listen to it too!😍
5⭐️ did my ALC re read for the upcoming audio release and it was PHENOMENAL. The narrarators did such a killer job on this & truly brought the book to life. Specifically the rage from Kayden was executed to PERFECTION. my lawd this was just chefs kiss 🤌🏼✨
thank you Cassandra & Podium for this opportunity xx
