I really don’t like how they keep jumping from different scenes to different scenes without like a warning. It happened out of nowhere and I don’t know what’s going on. It also confuses me I’ll be thinking where on one scene and then all sudden it’s a different scene and I didn’t notice it. I can’t tell if it’s been days, hours or months. Honestly this story was not what I was expecting. It wasn’t bad per se but by the impression of the little snip I read I thought it was going to take a different direction/ approach. I don’t mean to be a hater, but some of these things she’s able to do now she wasn’t able to do in the beginning and no, where does it say how she learned to do these things and I’m all down for treating each each other, the same and all that but there is a time we gotta use common sense. This alien is a train assassin literally he’s train to take people out, start or finish wars and she’s literally a hairstylist. How in the name of all the avocado’s can she do all the things he can. To be completely honest, I was expecting something totally different than what I actually read. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t like it either.

I couldn't finish

This was a DNR for me. I could not finish it for the life of me. I stopped at chapter 14, halfway through the book. Chapter 11 and 12 were so confusing and had so many big gaps, it was like there were 2 stories that were combined and they were deleted halfway through. In the beginning I could have sworn the author described the FMC as blonde and the MMC with dark scales. But later on the FMC is a redhead and the MMC is gold then red. I could go on with the inconsistencies, however, it basically needs some heavy editing and rework. The plot is there but the execution is horrible.

Scales Make Three is a wildly entertaining monster romance that blends creature chaos, possessive tension, and addictive group dynamics into one seriously fun read.

Cara Stone and Athena Storm create a story where the chemistry doesn’t just happen between two people — it expands, shifts, and intensifies with every interaction. The “scales” element adds a distinctly non-human edge that makes the romance feel fresh, primal, and unpredictable.

What makes this book work so well is the balance between tension and playfulness. Beneath the monster romance setup is a story about connection, trust, and finding where you belong — even if it looks completely unconventional from the outside.

If you love monster romance, possessive but devoted love interests, and chaotic chemistry that somehow works perfectly, Scales Make Three is ridiculously bingeable.

🖤 As always, please check your content warnings before reading.

Good book!

I absolutely don’t like SF books, BUT this was done well with the SF business for a non-reader like me. I actually liked that part. Very mildly spicy for a person who never read spice but now reads dark spice. Done well. The story was great and it was a HEA, which is I will read. There was was part where no transition was done from one place in the home to one whole building to another. I slide by stuff like that normally but as an unfortunate speed reader I had to reread that bit. The FB ad sucked me into where I check out a book thoroughly and I couldn’t resist and I am so glad I didn’t. Plenty of action the only regret I had was we weren’t in the pregnancy part or child part quite long enough for me, but I am happy with what I got because some books would have just ended with her pregnant. So read it, it’s great!

Holy Continuity Errors

I've never read a book with so many continuity errors. She's never met people before and all of a sudden she's known them for years and either long standing enemies or best friends. Voltar started as a purple monster but by the end was red. There are times they started in salon but all of a sudden she is able to walk into her room in her apartment. They walk to the roof next to a farmer's market all of a sudden it's her apartment roof. Other people mention the ungodly useof "ozone" and it's so bad. I had to start ignoring it because it was mentioned so much. I loved the romance but the plot and continuity were so bad that I couldn't focus on it.

4 1/2 stars - Enjoyable Athenaverse fated mate romance story. This story has likable characters with chemistry in an interesting storyline with action, romance, and drama. This story is about Sable a stylist who after getting the latest Velvra-9 shoes in a boutique in Glindora was walking back home when she witnessed a hit by The Nines and Voltar a Vakutan warrior who was assigned by General Dowron to protect her after she refused police protection. I'd volunteer to read and review this enjoyable story as they evade the syndicate that wants her erased as our couple fall for each other.

Felt like it was written using AI. There were a few good lines in the book that I enjoyed though.

"Your record," Lazarus mutters, "reads like a war crime indictment with a fan club."

"I can be subtle," I protest. "Sometimes. Usually. When I'm unconscious."

"Regret's just a fancy word for adventure you didn't see coming."

Bad title but good story

Bad title but good story. The title to this book was very misleading. It doesn’t describe the book at all. It was a very good book. I was kind of surprised at how good it was. This book is the perfect example of don’t let the Title fool you. I might need a second time, which is something I really do.

Arc review I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. When sable witnesses something she shouldn't have she finds herself with voltage as her protection. Very cute

The authors have taken us to another time and place to pull us into the lives of Sable and Voltar. The heart pounding story keeps us turning the pages with danger, connection, secrets, action and steam.

Amazing

This book was way better than I thought it was gonna be. There is action throughout the book. And how can you not love the main character Sabel? She is one strong female, but she has to be to deal with the huge alien that is protecting her. What starts out as one thing definitely turns in to more. You must read this book if you love alien love stories. It has a great ending, and all the characters come full circle.

Voltar and Sable

This was good! Different, spicey, and sweet! We have so many good tropes in here and the ending was as perfect as it could be. Although having a six foot toddler sounds as scary as a regular toddler but with a comedic element!

Ahh; the ending was unnecessary & kind of stupid, but I really rather enjoyed the rest of it. Anything "three years later" could've been left off IMO. I really loved both of our main characters, though, & enjoyed the story well enough overall.

well, that’s a pleasant surprise

I bought this book not really thinking that it would be. I love it. You’ll love it. There’s nothing not to love. It’s fast paced. It’s funny. It’s engaging. You’ll love the characters. It’s just full on fun

This was such a fun read! I was a little confused with some of the character descriptions - either I skimmed something or they weren’t consistent. But I really liked Sable and how things work throughout this story.

Choppy

I thought I was getting a different book from the description. The whole thing was choppy and disconnected. There were mentions of the heroine knowing an assassin years ago but the thought wasn't finished.

Unsuitably advertised

Never had such a bait and switch.
The book is actually decent, but it needs some attentive editing.
It suffers from jumps in logic and situations.
The pregnancy is it the last 80% so... what the heck is with the title!

Good draft

This has good bones, but really is a set of disjointed scenes. The writing and ideas are good but it lacks very needed transitions.

Interesting! Cover art is sort of at odds with the character descriptions and tone of the book. It was a little repetitive but also captivating and unique and sweeter than I expected!

Missing pieces

Starts off good. The mmc is funny and charming. The fmc is strong and sweet. However the book just felt like a puzzle that had missing pieces.

Amazing Read!

It is a great read, plenty of twists and turns, and the witty back-and-forth makes it an even better read!
