Razz James should have been the toast of Manhattan society. At twenty-eight, with an Ivy League pedigree, a prominent family name, and inherent charm, he was poised for flight. But six years after his twin brother's death, Razz is trapped in a black hole of grief. His days are a blur of gin, video games, and denial, while his two lifelong best friends, Hatcher Boudreaux, a shining star at an elite hedge fund, and Archie Stonebridge, a cybersecurity expert, quietly brace for the moment Razz doesn’t come back from the brink.
Then Hatcher receives a cryptic invitation…
…an offer to join Scepter & Scythe, an exclusive secret society.
The initiation challenge is a task so daring few would ever attempt it: steal a memento from Apollo Peck, Hatcher’s infamous billionaire boss. Peck’s residence, a fantastical mansion perched atop New York City’s poshest building, is impenetrable. Fearful of losing his job, Hatcher refuses the assignment, but Razz, intrigued and desperate for a distraction, volunteers.
Razz thinks he’s executed the perfect crime…
…then someone turns up dead.
What started as a lark quickly spirals into a far more devious and deadly plot with Razz in the crosshairs. In a world where power buys innocence, and the truth is subjective, Razz must unmask the mastermind before he becomes the next pawn sacrificed on the board.
Fans of Riley Sager, Freida McFadden, and Sandra Brown will love The Architect of Deception.
This book contains explicit consensual sexual situations and violence equivalent to that in an R-rated movie.

the setup… Erasmus (Razz) James has it all. At twenty-eight, he’s an Ivy League graduate, from a wealthy and well respected family, has loyal friends and is simply brilliant. But six years ago, his twin brother died and Razz is drowning in grief and excess, his family and friends waiting for the day when they will lose him, too. When his friend Hatcher receives a cryptic invitation to join an exclusive secret society, the outrageous conditions of the initiation piques Razz’s interest. What begins as an interesting distraction turns into something dangerous and deadly.
the heart of the story… Hands down, this is one of the best plotted stories I’ve ever read. The misdirections, red herrings and other subterfuge were beyond excellent as they didn’t feel like what they were. I thought this was another rich frat boy playing at life until Razz wasn’t. I’ve never been this far off and when the story took a turn (and it’s a biggie), I was mesmerized. Great villains, unsympathetic victims, an romance and good guys you don’t see coming.
the bottom line… It’s evident this was well researched as the signs of wealth and opulence aren’t the typical but those you see with old money. It adds authenticity to a complex story and renders the characters believable. It’s masterful in its design and plotting, beyond five stars. But, that’s been my experience with Baldwin’s writing.
Are you a Debbie Baldwin fan? If not, grab a copy of The Architect of Deception and join the crowd. This book is top shelf, from the hook, to the pacing, and on to the characterization. The twists will have any reader furiously flipping the pages.
MC Razz James, broken-hearted over his twin’s death, drowns his sorrows in a liquor bottle. Only the task of solving a complex riddle shakes him from a routine of daily blackout drinking. What a well-written thriller, with twists, turns, red herrings, dead-ends, and detours. I never figured it out.
Debbie Baldwin is a master at writing human emotions, and deftly weaves a web of suspense, surprise, and high stakes. The result is intoxicating. I’ll be checking her backlist later today!
The Architect of Deception is a contemporary thriller that will have you hooked from the beginning you open it to the first page. I will admit before I started reading it I had no idea what the experience would be like and I am glad that I took the opportunity to read it because it ended up being worth it. The setting and the characters were very well drawn out. While this book won't be everyone's cup of tea I will admit I have a great deal of praises and love for this novel.
We are introduced to Razz who can't seem to cope with the death of his twin seems to spend his days wallowing away. His friends Hatcher and Archie are worried but their abilities to fix the issue are limited. Until the invitation to join a very secret society comes along which seems to be the answer to all their troubles. For a moment Razz seems to have found the solution to pull himself out of his funk. However, when things go wrong it is going to take some strong skills to come back.
What a thriller!!! The first 30% or so was a little slow while you’re learning the characters/plot but after that it picks up so fast! I loved that there were a couple different plot lines going on that all connected in the end. I had so many people on my suspect list & still didn’t figure it out. Several twists completely threw me at the end, I was truly shocked! If you’re a fan of m*rder /mystery, I definitely think you should pick this one up.
This was definitely a really good mystery/ thriller. So many twists. Some I predicted and a few I did not! Took me a bit to get into it but once I did I was hooked !
I ate this one up. If you love a good murder, mystery and secret societies book with lots of twists, add this to your TBR!
Razz James had everything going for him until grief completely derailed his life, and the second he gets pulled into this secret society situation it spirals fast. What starts as a risky little challenge turns into something way bigger, darker, and really hard to put down.
I loved the different points of view and the short chapters. It made it so easy to keep saying just one more chapter. And the way everything starts clicking together at the end was so good. I was guessing the whole time and loved how everything tied together at the end! Totally did not have anything figured out (which I love!)
I felt like book read like a movie in my head the entire time and I could actually see every scene play out. I was thinking about who I would cast as the characters!
This book was such a fun ride! There is a lot to digest in the beginning and a lot of characters to get to know, but absorb it and push through because once this story gets going, it doesn’t stop. So many twists and turns in this one! What starts as a small heist Razz decides to undertake to give him a sense of purpose after his brother’s death turns into so much more. Razz successfully pulls off his heist, but gets wrapped up in a murder investigation with a dirty cop determined to pin the murder on him. I absolutely love how this book had several different storylines going on that all weaved together by the end. If you like thrillers be sure to add this one to your tbr. Thank you Get Red Pr for the advance copy of this book.
This was my introduction to Debbie Baldwin’s writing, and I am officially hooked! It was such a page-turner and kept me thoroughly entertained from start to finish. While there are several characters and intersecting storylines to keep track of at the beginning, don't let that deter you. Once the pieces start falling into place I literally could not put it down.
I loved Razz’s character so much! On the flip side, Baldwin crafts a villain you love to hate. And I’ve never loved hating a character more than I have Glick. I also loved the romantic side plot. It was the perfect addition, adding heart to the high-stakes suspense without overshadowing the mystery.
If you are looking for a murder mystery (with a hint of romance) that will keep you guessing until the very last page, The Architect of Deception is a must-read!
Thank you so much Get Red PR for the early copy of this book!
This book perfectly fits into both the mystery and thriller category. You will keep thinking you have the plot figured out and another twist will come. I can usually figure out the guilty party pretty quickly but this one actually kept me guessing.
Razz is among the wealthy in New York. He's 28, has an Ivy League Pedigree, and status. His brother's passing shatters him though. He can't seem to climb out of the depression and grief. He does have 2 best friends, Hatcher and Archie, that have been through a lot with him. It is Hatcher that receives the info about a secret society, Scepter & Scythe.
To get into Scepter & Scythe, Hatcher has to do something that could cost him his career for the initiation. Hatcher decides to not do it but Razz steps up to the plate. He has to execute the plan perfectly to be considered. That's where things go really wrong. He executes the plan but has no idea how someone ended up unalived.
The pacing of this book is fantastic. You won't want to put it down. Just be prepared for the twists and turns that will keep you on your toes until the end!
4.5/5 stars! Really good book! I loved the multiple mysteries going on at the same time. They get all twisted together and I was surprised with the outcomes. Enjoyed reading it!
Thank you to the author and publisher for the advanced copy! This is my honest review.
Debbie Baldwin did it again. Created a multilayered story that pulls you in. The characters are complex and unique in their own way. Needing to know what makes them tick and uncover their backstory. The book is laugh aloud funny and emotionally deep at the same time. The mystery behind the jewelry heists, the death of a prominent man, and what makes Razz a target seamlessly weaves together to make a gem of a read. I tore through this book, pages flying everywhere. The romance is steamy and will set you on fire. This is a must read!
Razz James is a twenty-eight-year-old who is still reeling from the death of his twin six years ago. He has lapsed into a bottomless pit of despair, depression, and anger. He cannot seem to pick himself up and become motivated again. Razz's two best friends, Archie and Hatch, have been trying to entice him into anything. Sponsoring an archaeological dig, shipwreck hunting, you name it they have tried it and nothing has worked. Until Hatch is asked to audition for the secret society, Scepter & Scythe. This immediately grabs Razz's attention and no one else thinks it is a good idea. Even though his friend throws the invitation away, Razz plucks it from a trashcan determined to break the codes. No one realizes this invitation could turn deadly. Good thing Razz has other distractions found at his local coffeehouse, who he lovingly calls Muffin. She wants to slap him and calls him Pig instead.
I was lucky enough to get an unbound copy of this terrific book. I have been dying to spread my recommendations high and low. Shout about this book from the rooftops. It is fun, fast, and you will not soon forget this incredible cast of characters. Thank you so much for my gifted copy and for having me take part in arc team. You and this book are incredible!
The Architect of Deception Debbie Baldwin 04/21/2026 Gatekeeper Press
This is my first Debbie Baldwin book and it will not be my last. . The Architect of Deception is a twisty, upper class psychological crime thriller set in NYC with characters that are dripping with money, sass and secrets. Meet Razz James. He lost his twin brother in an accident years ago and decided the best thing for him to do would be to get lost in a bottle of liquor. Thankfully he has a tight friend group and they refuse to let him lose the battle. His best friend receives a cryptic invitation from an elite and secret group called Scepter & Scythe - solve the riddle - come to the club. What is this about? Is it real? Razz has time on his hands and decides to solve the riddle.
Pay attention to the details - they matter! What happens next is a cat and mouse game that goes from penthouse to penthouse with loose ends, murder and crimes where nothing is what it seems, power and money distort the truth and Razz seems to be the target in something much bigger, but why? This book has what we all want - short chapters, secret societies, elite wealth and corruption, layered deception and reveals - but hang on all the way to the end because when you think it is going to wind down, here comes some more. Honestly without giving anything away (and this is for everyone who reads this) I think we could shift in the main characters and have a sequel. This is something that I totally need to talk about and will be paying attention to in the future.
What did I just read?!?!? When I started reading I had no idea what a treasure hunt would turn into and how seemingly unrelated events were connected. Razz James is grieving the death of his twin and seems incapable of even the smallest task and as a billionaire he really does not need to leave his New York City home. His friends, Hatch and Archie, are supportive and want him to do something. An invitation to solve a challenge for the secret Scepter & Scythe society that Hatch receives may be just the thing. As Razz attempts to solve the clues he finds himself the prime suspect in a crime. With corrupt cops trying to make sure he is charged with the crime it seems like his life of leisure may be at an end. But things are not what they seem. The twists kept coming and the end took me by surprise. The cast of characters are engaging and the perfect mix of likeable characters that I wanted good things for and a few miserable ones that made things interesting. If you have read the Bishop Security series you are in for a treat with a character from that series making a brief appearance in this one. I enjoyed this touch and it has me wondering and hoping that there is going to be another book with these characters.
If you enjoy thrillers that keep you guessing with connections and endings that you don’t see coming. I recommend that you read this book. You won’t be disappointed.
Thanks to Get Red PR for the free, gifted copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
If you love: • psychological thrillers • secret societies • heists gone wrong • rich elite drama • morally gray characters • twisty, layered mysteries
THIS ONE KEEPS YOU GUESSING 👀🔥
Razz James is still deep in his grief, spiraling and searching for anything to pull him out—and when this secret society opportunity drops in his lap?? You already know it’s about to go LEFT.
What starts as a reckless heist quickly turns dark, and once things escalate… it’s a nonstop unraveling of secrets, lies, and power plays 🧩
Razz was such an interesting main character—flawed, messy, and not always easy to root for, but that’s what made him feel real.
Hatcher and Archie added that grounding element, but even they couldn’t escape the chaos once everything started unfolding.
The mystery itself was solid—plenty of twists, lots of suspicion, and that constant “who can you even trust?” feeling.
For me, it was more of a slow burn at times, but once it picked up?? I was hooked and needed to know how it all came together.
If you love thrillers with layered plots, messy characters, and secrets hiding behind wealth and power… this is definitely worth the read 🖤🔪

This was my first book. I have read by Debbie Baldwin, but it definitely will not be the last! If you want to fast paced, whodunit, that is filled with suspense and a touch of romance, then this is the perfect book for you.
I had such a great time reading this story. It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. And I truly fell in love with our main character Razz. The entire time I was rooting for him. I loved how witty he was. And I also loved the love that he gave to some of the other characters. And I loved the ending, which of course I won’t spoil, but it was pretty bad ass. This book had me feeling pretty much every single emotion from happy to sad to angry to overwhelmed. It is filled with plot twist and a really satisfying ending. There was a moment in the story that made my heart skip a beat because I was so worried for one of our characters. I loved the entire mystery aspect of the book and just seeing Razz have such great character, development and growth from the beginning to the end.
Thank you so much to Get Red Pr for allowing me to be an early reader of this book. I highly recommend it!
4.5 stars rounded up Thank you Get Red PR Books for my gifted copy.
Wow! I picked up 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘋𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 and was immediately pulled in by the story of Razz James. There’s so much to learn about this complex main character: his past, his current struggles, and the dynamics of his inner circle. The multiple layers of this book are woven together, creating a tapestry of elements that are both classic and unique. Author Debbie Baldwin’s newest novel is full of compelling characters and riveting plot twists. As the plot and subplots unfold, readers are taken on a whirlwind adventure. Just like a roller coaster ride, the momentum of the narrative builds, and then the reader is transported full speed ahead, with many twists and turns. Just when you think you know what’s what, there’s another unexpected turn up ahead. I throughly enjoyed the way Baldwin set the scene with her vivid descriptions of settings as well as characters’ appearances, personalities, and motives. I was engaged in the story and invested in its outcome. In my opinion, this book would make a great movie! This is the first book I’ve read by Debbie Baldwin, and I now need to check out her backlist.
Thank you to GetRedPR for the free copy of The Architect of Deception by Debbie Baldwin (Gatekeeper Press). This publishes on Tuesday April 21st.
This gave me strong Logan Huntzberger/Life and Death Brigade energy from Gilmore Girls, but with a darker, more mystery-driven edge.
Once the backstory and character development are in place, the plot really takes off. It becomes a fast-paced, engaging read with plenty of twists that keep the pages turning, a good weaving of plot reveals and puzzle/riddle style clues that give the mystery some interesting added notes of intrigue. The NYC setting, combined with subtle dark academia and secret society elements, adds a strong sense of atmosphere that worked for me. I do love NYC settings and exploration of the behind the scenes rich people life motifs.
Razz is a compelling main character, flawed and privileged, but still easy to root for, with meaningful emotional weight tied to his grief. The supporting cast adds depth, moments of humor, and helps ground the story as the mystery unfolds.
Overall, this is a solid, immersive escape read....perfect if you’re in the mood for something twisty, character-driven, and easy to get pulled into. I recommend this for a Spring stormy afternoon or evening when you want to get quickly drawn into a mystery!
📚Book Review 📚- Architect of Deception by Debbie Baldwin Happy Release Day to Debbie Baldwin! This was a new author read for me and I enjoyed this book. The storyline was interesting and I liked the character development. There is also a few twists, morally gray characters, and suspense that keeps the book moving. Razz James, an ultra-wealthy 28 year old is grieving the loss of his brother and finally finds something that can grab him from his despair. He finds an invitation to a secret society and decides that he will try and solve the riddle in order to find out who is in this club. He needs to find a clue which is located in the home of a billionaire and must sneak it out of house during a party. Something occurs at the party that makes him the suspect in murder! He and his friends must work to clear his name. I was hooked and finished this book quickly! I am looking forward to reading this author’s backlist! Thank you to GetRed Pr, Debbie Baldwin, and Gatekeeper Press Publishing for a copy of this book to review!
I absolutely love a good thriller. I mean, who doesn't love a good murder mystery book? I loved how in the beginning, the author really layed out the characters and the beginning storyline. At first I thought I was truly prepared for whatever story was to come but man, was I severely underestimating the plot of the story. Oh, and the twists, well, let's just say .... throwing a curveball big time.
I like to think of myself as one of those people that generally sees what's coming in a book but this was unexpected. Every time I thought I had figured out what was going to happen, or who had done what, I was so wrong. That made me love the book so much more.
This book has amazing characters, lies, deception, secret societies, grief and trauma, and lots of "on the edge of your seat" excitement. I had never read a book by this author but I definitely will be adding her as one of my must read authors. Her writing captivated me and just truly sucked me into the story.
For now, you just need to get to know Razz by getting you a copy of this book. You can definitely thank me later.
An Ivy league twenty-something man who is on the right track to success gets wrapped up in loss, grief, and a murder in this fast-paced thriller. Razz James risks more than he bargained for and it all starts with a riddle that he is determined to solve. Debbie Baldwin writes a story that is thrilling and leaves readers with shocking, unexpected revelations as the book progresses.
Razz seems to have it all. He has all the advantages to lead a successful career, but when his twin brother dies, he is left in a depressive state. When one of his friends receives an invitation about joining a secret society, he can't help but want to solve the riddle. But it leads him down a path that makes him the prime suspect. Jazz is now trying to prove his innocence even when it looks like his is pinned against the wall.
The Architect of Deception keeps you guessing and even then you won't see it coming.
So many twists and turns, in this one I never knew where the story was going, and that made this a very fast-paced read for me.
I will admit I did struggle with a couple things. I struggled with keeping people straight because we get so many different pov's. There also were a couple chapters that felt a bit random in my opinion. Outside of that this one had me flipping through so quickly to try to figure out who did what, and I never would have guessed it! The chapters are short, and even though I struggled with keeping pov's separate at first I did still appreciate getting all of them, such a great read!
Thank you GetRedPR and the author for my advanced reader copy in return for my honest review!
If you said no, well get ready, THE ARCHITECT OF DECEPTION will grab you within the first 10 pages and not let you go.
Razz James once was soaring high on his way to be the TOP dog of Manhattan's elite scene, but when his twin brother dies, everything changes. Years later we find Razz in a drunken, self pitied stupor at his lowest.
When he and two friends are invited into a world of secret society, Razz thinks he's found his solution and ability to climb back on top.
But, nothing is as it seems.....
A huge thank you to GetRedPR and Debbie Baldwin for a chance to read prior to it's release on 4/21/2026. If you love twists and turns, get yourself a copy!
I’m new to Debbie Baldwin’s work, but The Architect of Deception has made me an instant fan. From start to finish, this book was phenomenal, the pacing was spot-on, keeping me completely hooked from the first chapter to the jaw-dropping finale. The twists at the end had me flipping back a few pages just to make sure I read that right; I totally didn’t see it coming! Debbie Baldwin masterfully blends suspense, emotion, and complex characters into a story that’s both clever and addictive. I couldn’t put it down, and I’ll definitely be watching for more of her books in the future. If you love a well written thriller that keeps you guessing until the very end, I cannot recommend this enough.
Masterfully executed. This truly sucked you into the mystery of whodunnit. It was subtle and effective. I didn’t realize how invested I was until I couldn’t put it down. The layers to the mystery. The complex character. The way everything came together in the end was simply perfection. I haven’t read a thriller this well planned out that was so complex and compelling.
Then one simple line in the epilogue has me at the edge of my seat questioning and guessing if there will be more. “Now, the next phase of their plan can commence.” What does this mean?!
Anywho! Here I am just dying and needing another Debbie Baldwin read.
📖 Book Review 📖 We all walk our own path in this world and comparison is futile. A truly thrilling event in this household of seven is when the calendar is clear and we can all relax together but in Debbie Baldwin’s heart-pounding thriller, stakes are a tad bit higher. With great wealth and generational privilege comes secret societies and responsibilities that result in a page turner that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Full of riddles and adventures, The Architect of Deception is a fast-paced read with lots of layers that feels like an escape to another world of intrigue and mystery.
This was a fantastic intense thriller. Razz James is struggling with the death of his twin. Razz is working to solve a challenge and finds himself trapped as a suspect in a crime. This was a slow burn for the first portion, but it quickly ramps up and escalates into a fast paced and twist filled thriller. This one will keep you guessing until the final pages. This was a very cinematic read, fully engaging and well paced. Debbie Baldwin is one to keep your eyes on.
If this isn’t a MOVIE in the next year, I will be SHOCKED!!!
My jaw is still on the ground. If you thought The Sixth Sense had a great twist, you are going to love this book. Razz James is so grief-stricken over the death of his twin he can barely get out of bed to get blackout drunk every day. When his friend gets an invitation to join a secret club, Razz tries to help by solving a complex riddle. Every step pulls him further into a web. I loved the character so much that I was shouting at my Kindle when he was doing something stupid. Every step, every red herring, every subplot is so perfectly woven together. Just when I was sure I figured it out, the author knocked me on my butt. I actually went back and read it again to assemble the clues! I wish I could give it a dozen stars. It’s going to make the best movie. I’m already casting it in my head!!!
If you are looking for a thriller that makes you gues and Jump and the plot has a way to pull you deeply in let me tell you this book did not disappoint!! There is so many twist and I makes you feel like you have to be a deceive to try to figure out what is going on and how you are able to solve of the person you think it is! It was a both slow at the start but it decently picked up and the ending I was not expecting it!
Wow, just, wow. (I counted on Goodreads how many reviews that begin with the word “wow.” Mine is the fourth.) This book is a plotting masterpiece. As an avid reader and watcher of mysteries, I am always looking for a great whodunit. This book is it. In addition to a unique and inventive take on a classic whodunnit, the author also creates a complex and enthralling world—a present-day Gilded Age. It would be easy to write off the main character, Razz James, as a spoiled rich do-nothing, but his pain is so real and his angst so believable, I was rooting for him from the first page. Then when he finds himself about to be framed for a murder, the stakes go sky-high. The book lands on every level. Five stars.
