The king is trapped. The chaos should be over. So why does everything feel like it's just beginning?
With the immortal king sealed away and the rebellion finally breathing, Naevyn thought she'd earned a moment to figure out who she actually is, but with her mother's growing weakness and Valthaeron growing stronger by the day, she doesn't have that luxury anymore.
Now she's hunting answers in the last place she the domain of the true dragons.
With faction lines fracturing and old loyalties curdling into something dangerous, Naevyn can't afford to trust anyone. Except maybe Cairos, who has decided that if he has to suffer, so does she. And he's very, very good at making her suffer.
But the deeper they go, the more Naevyn realizes that saving her mother might cost her everything she just fought to protect. The prophecy isn't finished with her. And the blood that saved them once?
It's going to demand a lot more than she's ready to give.
i was kinda procrastinating with reading this at the beginning but that changed into me not being able to put the damn book down. the story picks up exactly where book 1 ended so it was so nice to read this right after that!
i really enjoyed reading about the underneath and watching naevyn trust herself more. my heart BROKE when she and cairos fought. and omg i feel beaten up after that ending. cause (spoiler) WHAT DO YOU MEAN? they feel absolutely nothing??? THE BOND??? and now hessa is suffering too?? i genuinely can’ttttt.
book 3 can’t come soon enough!
thank you so much for the advanced copy, eliza 💗 really
I’m obsessed with this series. The tension, the plot. The characters. Literally everything is just great. I’m so glad I got an arc of this second book as well because the thought of having to wait for it stressed me out.
I thoroughly enjoyed this one as well as the first one. However, not quite as much. It felt a little bit like this book suffered from second book syndrome and since the main characters are apart for quite a while during this book I found it a little dragging during some parts.
But, 4,25 stars I mean obviously I still loved it.
Crossing my fingers that there will be a third book out. I’ll definitely do a reread of these either way.
*ARC REVIEW* This is the second book in the Circus of Souls series & once again, I am left yearning for more! Dysphoria dives into backstories and character development. Any questions you might have had from book one have been answered or have been baited to be revealed in book 3! Eliza’s world building is warm & velvety.. it’s simply gorgeous! I’m in love with it this series & my soul-bond is longing for book 3! Thank you, Eliza!
This oneeeeeee wrecked me!!! I didn’t want to put it down at any point, it’s just as good if not better than book one! My mind is still reeling from the horrible awful cliffhanger at the end, and I’m waiting with bated breath for the next one! Eliza Benner knows how to keep you wanting more, and I desperately NEED more.
This is the second book in the Circus of Souls series. We’re following the group from the first group on a mission to find a way to save Bellamine/ Naevyn’s mother from shadowstone without releasing Valthaeron.
The journey takes us on a mission where Cairos is captured and Naevyn has to venture into the Dragon realm, the Underneath, without him. She needs to find the dragon responsible for the very curse that has affected Cairos and the rest of the group, Voryn. Many secrets come to light, on this journey and deals are made. Saving Orlia might cost Naevryn more than she is willing to give. Or more than she can sacrifice on her own.
I love that we get some world building, some background on Bellamine, Cairos and the true dragons. I enjoyed 2/3 of the book and then things kinda took a turn for me. Mostly Naevyn pissed me off royally and i’m still raging! (Spoilers below)
We also get a few big new plot points and end on a cliffhanger. I’m very ready to see what happens!
****** Spoilers
Bellamie’s origin story she’s actually the daughter of the God of Chaos, who created the shadow stalkers which is why they are so protective of her. Cairos is off to seek out the God’s and the true dragons are rising. I’m curious why Cairos is going to see the gods when they don’t create soul bonds.
Neavyn drove me crazy this book. First, she knows she needs to ask certain questions but just conveniently decides to keep letting it slide until it’s too late!? I hate when characters so clearly know to ask about important and relevant things but just…don’t. She does it with Cairos, she does it with Voryn. Then she (in my opinion) overreacts to Cairos “lie of omission”. Shes mad he tried to protect his friends the only way he thought was right and made a decision for them. Honestly I cannot believe I would ever utter the words / defend a man about a lie of omission but here I am, telling Naevyn she needs to chill out and not demand things of him that have ZERO to do with her and he’s been dealing with for 600 years. As if all that isn’t enough, SHE IMMEDIATELY BECOMES THE BIGGEST HYPOCRITE AND MAKES THE DECISION TO BREAK THE SOUL BOND WITHOUT EVEN TALKING TO CAIROS ABOUT IT!? For a mother she doesn’t even remember from her past life. Like yes Orlia deserves freedom but Cairos would have helped her if she asked!
The last straw is that once again she doesn’t ask for extremely valid information before making this deal. She doesn’t ask WHAT OR WHY Voryn wants the soul bond? What he plans to use it for? What happened to all the other soul infused shadow stone he’s traded for 600 years !? Just nope, she’s mad Cairos kept things secret so let’s go make a deal in the heat of an overreaction and lose all intelligence?? I just lost it at this point. This isn’t the same FMC from the first storyline. I know characters need growth and arcs and book 2 in series is often about hurdles and the “third act break up” but I hate that trope and think how this all played out was a bit ridiculous.
Favorite Quotes: - "Touch her," Cairos says, and his voice drops, low and deadly, "and there is nowhere in either realm where you will be safe from me. Nowhere in the depths of Hell where you could escape from me." - "I love you," he says. "And I choose you every day. Every morning I wake up, and every night I close my eyes, I choose you."

Vitalia was my very first arc and it will always hold a special place in my heart, so being able to read book two as an arc as well was so exciting.
3.5 Stars
I think Eliza writes in a way that’s really easy to love. She has the tool belt to write great fantasy books. I’m going to be honest. I don’t know how to feel about book 2. Part of me loved it. The world building, the eloquent writing, but I’m really upset about the choices Naevyn made and frankly, the ending.
Hear me out, I loved that we got some more backstory about Bellamie, Cairos’s past and the true Dragons, but I really hope that book 3 isn’t going to be a hunt for more people entombed in shadowstone. The cliffhanger ending could definitely mean a few different things, but I feel like we were told a specific story snip at the end and it would lead the reader to assume that end note means we are going hunting for a specific person in shadowstone. I really hope not, because it would feel like a book 2 repeat to me. I will be reading book 3 because I have to know where it goes and if we get some redemption, because right now, I’m straight up mad at Naevyn. I know Cairos lied by omission, but her berating him over it and then making worse choices on her own and omitting that to him is so hypocritical it hurts me and it feels like a betrayal to her strong FMC energy to be a coward about it. Overall, I love the world, and the story elements, and I NEED TO KNOW MORE but this one left me with a bitter taste.
Come back after you’ve read the book for the spoilers below to understand why.
SPOILERS from here, so STOP here if you haven’t read this book yet. You have been warned
I’m sorry. Maybe it’s because I’m a husband’s girlie, but I could never give up my husband for anyone, except maybe my children if I had them, but I don’t so I can’t say. But I could NEVER give up my love/bond with my husband for my mom that I don’t even remember and then NOT tell him until after I’ve already sealed the deal. You should talk about everything because communication is the most important thing in a relationship and the fact that she got mad at him for not telling her about the dragons and then immediately sold off their bond in a fit of anger like an emotional child; oooh that left me steaming. I was loving the book until that moment. She was such a hypocrite! How can you love someone so deeply then throw it all away for your mom you don’t remember without even talking to him about what was happening. If she had told him, I feel like he would have been upset of course, but would have understood and probably would have agreed to give it up for her to have her past life's mom back because he would do anything for her. OR they maybe could have found another way. I did appreciate the hate sex, but I would’ve preferred they work through it together instead of breaking the bond feeling like a heavy betrayal. If that was the only way, they would have come together in sadness for their loss but instead I think they both felt so empty because the decision was made in haste and without consulting the other. I can’t believe she did that to him after all he went through to get to her. Like I said, I will be reading book 3 because at this point, I’m so invested in this story, but ooh Naevyn, you are on my list girl.
Dysphoria, book 2 in the Circus of souls trilogy by Eliza Benner, brings us right in to where Vitalia, book 1, left off. Which was beautiful and draws you back into the story immediately. Naevyn and Cairos are trying to find a way to get her mother, Orlia, out of the shadowstone she has been trapped in for 600 years and separating her bond to Valthaeron in the shadowstone he is trapped in. Accompanied by mates new and old, they search several realms for the answers they seek. They will go anywhere and sacrifice a lot to do so. But will the sacrifice be worth it?
The imagery of each realm pulls you into the scenes with the characters. You can feel the lush velvet on the forest floor, taste the sea salt in the coastal air, hear the wind blowing past your ears as you ride on dragon back, smell the ash from the fire, see the bioluminescence on the walls. There's a scene in the circus tent that allows you to touch the silk and makes you gasp for breath. Your eyes screaming at the beauty of hundreds of magically covered dragons emerging into the sky.
I love the back and forth between Cairos and Naevyn. The sauciness of it all. Their growth and struggles solidified my love for them. Cairos, my man, with his humor, teasing and unfettered affections will leave you drooling and begging for more. There are some new faces and some familiar ones that we learn more about as well. All are written so supremely that you can read their souls through the pages.
When you've just finished something you thought impossible, but then the even more impossible starts. That's what this book is about. Facing the difficult, staring it down and fighting it, through fear and doubt, to rise against all the injustices knowing that whatever may happen it was all worth the choices you've made. Dysphoria is the perfect title for what takes place in its pages.
This has become a top shelf, god tier series for me. There isn't anything I would change. Eliza Benner, if you were going to rip out my soul through my chest, why didn't you let it happen the first time I went to the circus? While I am mostly kidding, this is without doubt a 5☆ read! It is such a unique storyline, one I've never read anything like before. And yes, there's some spice mixed in.
I want to thank the author and publisher for allowing me to be an early part of this journey through an ARC. And for creating such a fantastical world. I hope to always be a part of it, as it will always be a part of me.
So back to Circus of Souls series. Now book two and I so love this series.
Book one Vitalia didn’t end with a cliffhanger, but it had some loose ends. This story picks up exactly where the last book ended. The first half of the book was a bit slower. Where we get to know the characters a bit more and get some backstory about Bellamie Naevyns “mother". Who has been imprisoned for 600 years and then we meet Voryn a true dragon and we get some more of the original dragons.
There is also dual POV in this book. Where we follow both Naevyn (fmc/human/reincarnatedand) and Cairos (mmc/dragon/fae/cursed) and that I really enjoyed. To learn more about Cairos and I really loved seeing more of him. About their soul bond and the depth of it. I really loved the lake scene. This was so magical between them and one of my favourite scene. The gentle side of Cairos. But I also like the touch her and die part.
"Touch her", Cairos says, and his vocie drops, low and deadly, "and there are is nowhere in either realm where you will be safe from me. Nowhere in the depths of Hell where you could escape from me"
I just love the way the author writes. It has an easy flow and a feeling of beeing in a fairytale. Amazing worldbuilding and tons of atmosphere, but sometimes also funny and light moments.
The first half of the book was a bit too slow for me, but the second part just kicked in. It became fast-paced and I just couldn’t put the book down. In this part we get a new world that feels like being in a “center of the earth” fantasy and I just love it. The author also brings in the whole old myth of dragons living in caves. Loved it.
My absolute favorite scene was when several dragons flew in the air. It was EPIC AND GRAND. It felt massive and breathtaking and I could just see it in my mind.
"The sky is full of dragons, and the sun is catching their scales. The light they throw back turns the whole world into kaleidoscope. Tears run down my face at how big and beautiful the scene is."
Then we also get a some hot spicy moments, heartbreak, betrayal, twist, plots and a massiv cliffhanger!!
Which gives you the question: what are you willing to do for love? What are you willing to sacrifice and lose to save someone else. If that means you will have to lose your own happiness?
There is a hint of book 3. Yes!
I am so happy to be a part of this author’s journey. To read ARCs for both book one and two. Of course, I am hoping to be a part of book 3 if and when it comes.
Thank you so much Eliza for giving me this amazing opportunity.
This was an eARC given to me by the author and I leave my honest review freely.
Picking up right where book one left off, Dysphoria pulls you back into the adventure. The change in setting was fantastic, expanding the world-building and making it incredibly easy to feel invested in the plot alongside the characters.
What I Loved:
The Pacing: The scenes move quickly, and the new conflict brilliantly tackles the aftermath of book one. I loved the balance of action and tenderness, and that the characters are quick, realistic problem-solvers.
The Supporting Cast: The secondary characters are fantastic! Watching their believable, evolving dynamics with each other was a highlight.
Individual Arcs: Naevyn and Cairos solo storylines were fantastic. Being on her own brought back the version of Naevyn I loved at the start of book one.
What Didn't Work For Me:
The Romance & Spice: I really dislike Naevyn and Cairos as a couple, making their shared plot hard to get through. While the author successfully delivers on the spicy romantasy premise, some of their spicy scenes pulled me right out of the story during what I thought were crucial plot moments.
Dropped Threads: The sibling storyline from book one felt completely left behind, and some new characters lacked proper introductions, leaving me with questions.
The Lore: I’m still confused about the prophecy and how the dragon/fae/shade stalker systems actually function. The explanations tended to just repeat known info rather than deepening the world.
Despite my personal disconnect with the main romance, Eliza Benner has written a solid, fast-paced, and engaging second installment. If you love immersive fantasy adventures and great ensemble casts, this series is well worth the ride. I'm definitely curious to see what book three brings!
I didn’t think Eliza Benner could pull me back into this world harder than Vitalia did, but somehow Dysphoria completely consumed me 🖤
After finishing this book, I genuinely don’t know what to do with myself. 😭
The worldbuilding continues to be one of my favourite things about this series. Every new revelation, every hidden secret, every piece of history we uncover just makes the world feel bigger and more fascinating. I was constantly trying to piece everything together alongside the characters.
And Cairos... 😭 That man had me stressed, intrigued, and obsessed all at the same time. Half the time I wanted answers from him, and the other half I didn’t want the mystery around him to end.
I also loved Naevyn. She’s strong without feeling unrealistically perfect, and watching her navigate all the secrets, dangers, and revelations around her made me root for her the entire time.
And the chemistry between them completely stole the show. It was incredible from the start, but what really got me was the banter. Every conversation between them felt effortless. They challenged each other, frustrated each other, made me laugh, and somehow made me fall in love with them even more.
What I loved most was how perfectly the romance and plot balanced each other. Neither one overshadowed the other. The mysteries kept me hooked, while Naevyn and Cairos kept me emotionally invested.
Needless to say, by the end I was completely invested in this world and these characters. The wait for the next book is going to be brutal 😭
My Review: Dysphoria (Circus of Souls, #2) My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5 Stars) Release Date: 06/30/2026 "An Absolute Must-Read Masterpiece—I Couldn't Put It Down!" I was fortunate enough to receive an Advanced Review Copy of Dysphoria, and to say I was completely consumed by it would be an understatement. I literally could not put this book down, and any time real life or work forced me to take a break, I was absolutely itching to get back to the story. Picking up after the brutal battle against Valthaeron, this sequel hits the ground running and never lets up. Being reunited with Cairos, Naevyn, Gileon, Hessa, and Fenric felt like coming home to the best kind of chaos. The stakes are higher than ever, and Eliza Benner handles the fallout of book one with absolute perfection. The highlights of this book for me were twofold: The Romance: The slow-burn romance in this series continues to absolutely burn. The tension is exquisite, and watching their connection deepen amidst the chaos is everything a romantasy reader could ever want. The Emotional Stakes: Watching what Naevyn is willing to sacrifice to save her mother’s life was utterly gut-wrenching. The emotional depth in this installment is raw, powerful, and beautifully written. The character growth across the entire gang is phenomenal, and the trajectory of this journey has me completely hooked. Dysphoria is a spectacular sophomore novel that easily avoids the dreaded "second book syndrome." I am already desperate to get my hands on Book 3 to see where this incredible journey goes next! Thank you to Eliza Benner for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this storyline a lot more than I thought I would - it was adventurous and went a bit deeper with the worldbuilding compared to the first book, which I appreciated. I was invested in the story the entire time, although it might be a bit simple - it would have been interesting if the mysteries with the different monsters and the Gods was being further investigated alongside the main plot. I also really enjoyed the humorous characters and the new world that was added. Eliza has a way with building scenes that I really, really enjoy. I can see exactly what she describes and she is able to add a lot of depth to the scenes and the emotions as well, making me feel like I’m in the story.
I didn’t find any major plotholes as I did in the first book which made the reading experience a lot more smooth and enjoyable, but I was pulled out of the story quite often by a somewhat repetitive writing. There were a lot of ”just”, and ”like” and ”something” that eventually made me focus more on the wording than the actual book. This was compensated by the great sceneries though.
I liked the dual POV, but honestly - most of all I liked how Naevyn and Cairos were separated for most of the book. I really can’t stand the man for so many reasons and I’m struggling to see what Naevyn loves about him. I am questioning whether he is truly the main love interest? I feel like the morally grey theme went more towards cowardice and that Cairos has neither moral nor spine, making him a little bit pathetic in my eyes.
All and all, I enjoyed the book and I am curious about what happens in the next one!

I mean for real, what happened? I am sitting here writing this review still reeling from that ending. Emotional devastation hit hard and true in this book. ACTUAL TEARS. This book was absolutely brilliant Eliza Benner writes a story that brings out all of your feelings, from the good, the bad and everything in between. You become consumed with this book and the characters or the book consumes you. Either way, it is an emotional journey.
The world building. I don't think I can express how this world keeps evolving. You can just see the crystal trees, feel the shards under your feet. From the lands, to the creatures, to the dragons, to the world as it continues to grow. This book continues to draw you in by that alone. You live and breathe this world along with the characters.
Cairos, man, dragon shifter. He keeps me on a string, holds me by the throat and never lets go. He has such a presence on the paper. You want to get to know him, you want him by your side, you heart breaks with him. Naevyn, I just love getting to know her more, watching her stand on her own feet and make choices that break your heart as well as understanding why she made them. I love the banter between the two of them, they are always ready to play but also be so serious. Cairos knows her so well, I know the choices made will only bring them closer together.
The last 10% of the book had in me tears, had me holding my breath and cradling my kindle as if I could help with the scenes playing out. You are loving the story, knowing we are getting somewhere. Knowing it's coming to an end.
Then BAM Cliff hanger. Done. Ruined. Devastation.
Thank you Eliza Benner for allowing me to read this ARC early. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thank you to Eliza for the opportunity on this ARC!
A wild ride with Book 2 in the Circus of Souls series. I could not put this book down. Eliza you have absolutely outdone yourself once again.
World Building: It is absolutely incredible and immersive. I thoroughly enjoyed how descriptive Eliza is with the different worlds and realm she writes about. It was as if I was a character living in the book itself.
Characters: Daddy Cairos (MMC) forever has me in a chokehold. He’s hotter and more protective than ever. Naevyn (FMC) is more relatable than ever. She will always stand for what she believes is right, even if it could cost her everything and more. The side characters are still as epic as the first book. You’ll discover their growth and learn more of who they are. Someone new is introduced, Gideon, and he’s cheeky. He’s truly unexpected but makes you laugh with his antics.
Plot twists: ELIZA. What the heck?!? I was screaming, cheering, and tossing my phone across the room. I mean all this in a good way, because what do you mean?!? I was floored and had to repeatedly pickup my jaw from the floor. I did not see any of that coming. If you love cliff hangers, well Eliza does them really well! Get ready to be punched in the face with that insane cliff hanger ending!
Other notes: I am forever going to be on this roller coaster ride of a series, because honey I NEED and WANT to know what happens next. You’re in for a treat, so add Vitalia (Book 1) AND Dysphoria (Book 2) to your TBR!
First, I want to thank Eliza Benner for the opportunity to read this ARC. It’s book two in the ‘Circus of Souls’ series, Dysphoria.
This book has evolved exponentially from book one. I absolutely loved book one! Loved it! After reading Dysphoria, it felt like Vitalia was merely a warm-up. Dysphoria has built on and expanded upon the previous book, Vitalia.
I found the growth of the characters surprising. Naevyn, despite her origins and life of drudgery, has seamlessly adapted to this new life with grace and style. This demonstrates her strength and resilience.
Cairos, a Fae/Dragon Shifter, has revealed a more human side. The ‘mated bond’ between these two suggests that life and love should be smoother with such a connection. There’s a genuine human element that makes you relate.
While navigating love, there’s still life to contend with. An evil king to keep imprisoned, a mother to free from a 600-year-old prison, the original dragons to find, another realm to discover, and a cliffhanger that leaves you craving more.
Reading this book was a rollercoaster of emotions. I felt angry, frustrated, annoyed, sad, disbelief, excitement, elation, and even had to fan myself a few times during the steamy scenes. I couldn’t help but giggle in some spots too.
Eliza Benner, you’ve done it again! I couldn’t put this book down and I can’t wait for the next one.
This is book two of The Circus of Souls series by Eliza Benner and picks up almost immediately after the events of book one. Naevyn and Cairos are coming to terms with what happened and the consequences of that day when they learn that Orlia is dying due to the bond with Valthaeron. They spend the book trying to learn what they can and convince the people with the knowledge they need to help them.
I really enjoyed this book. The new characters added new elements to everything and raised the stakes for book 3. There was a new comic relief that was actually heart breaking, a tragic new romance, and a new villain that was very unsettling. The ending hurt more than I thought it would, actually devastating.
It did fall into the second book trap for me. It felt like a information gathering quest where not much happened which is insane because a lot did happen. I think it was because they spent most of the book in one location and the first one they traveled a lot more.
I find this authors writing style to be very comforting and it feels familiar, it's strong and well developed without being too overwhelming. Even though this is only the second book I've read of hers it feels like she's an author I've been reading for years. It's very similar to how I felt when I first started reading Ali Hazelwood books.
I received an early copy of this book from the author.
I truly wanted to love this book after enjoying Vitalia, but much of Dysporhia felt predictable, slow-paced, and dry to me.
Naevyn remains a highlight—her sassy, tell-it-like-it-is banter injects much-needed energy into the story. Unfortunately, the rest of the characters felt lackluster by comparison. Cairos, who was brooding and morally grey in the first book, now comes across as almost annoying, and like an insecure boyfriend, especially with the repeated "eyes up here, love" during intimate scenes.
While I appreciate the dual perspectives between Cairos and Naevyn, which help move the plot forward, the narrative suffers from excessive repetition and frequent rehashing of previous chapters. This made large sections of Dysporhia a struggle to get through.
It’s disappointing, because the Circus of Soul series does offers incredibly unique plot points and imaginative worldbuilding. More so, in the second over the first, with the new areas of exploration and realms. As this was something Vitalia didn't dabble much in.
With more polish and finesse, the writing could truly shine. I did love the concept of the bond/soul separation, and the circus from book one, and I still think this stands out as one of a kind series.
Thank you Eliza for the eARC. This is my honest review and I did it voluntarily.
Dysphoria is the continuation from the ending of Vitalia. Sadly, IMHO this book suffers a little bit of the second book syndrome. The arc of this book feels a little bit dragging in the middle, and suddenly the pace is going faster. (That's why I took off 0.5 points).
Cairos and Naevyn make me frustated that I just want to slap their heads 😅 Or just put them in a place and push them to talk. They really need to talk without distraction. They know exactly what they did/plan to do. And yet, they are not talking.
"Working it out requires trust. Trust requires honesty."
Spicy scenes: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
On the other hand, my fave character is still Fenric. He only shows up in a few scenes, but he really could give a punch. 🤭
Gileon.. I'll give him a clap. Every time he shows up, I want to know what he will do this time 😆
The ending... The turning point.. I didn't see it coming 😳 I know that there must be some explanation regarding the problem with the bond, but wow.
This was just as good as the first book. I need the next like Yesterday ! So many things happens in this and i feel like I have to reread it right away to find out more. And I also dont know how to put into words how much I like this, what I liked without spoling things. So I will leave this with a few words and my recomandation to read this series if you like dragonshifters and dragons, fae, worldbuilding that is told through the story and not in the first few chapters, a little bit of magic and portal travelling, some other creatures, mate bond, a story that captivates you from the very first page!
A few words of what i really liked without spoiling: The chemestry between Naevyn and chairos is hot! I love the development she goes through throughout the story. I love that we get to know them better in this. And the world building gets even deeper in this book. I love this Universe that Eliza has build and I am all for it! The first book left us with a sweet cliff hanger where it felt okay to wait for the next. But this one has left me with SO many questions that I need answers to so the wait will be terrible!
What a fantastic continuation of book one! And I absolutely loved the cliffhanger!! I can’t wait to read the next book!
From the tension, plot, characters, adventures and challenges, I really loved the whole story!
**Spoilers ahead!!**
I found the adventure and challenges within this book are very well crafted. Just when book one ended with Valthaeron trapped in Shadowstone, you think they’d have a brief interlude. But, nope! Book two starts strong with the revelation that Naevyn’s mother has been trapped in shadowstone for centuries, and now it's a race against time to save her before she dies. And the price that needs to be paid to save her? UGH. It wrecked me! I felt all the emotions the characters were feeling as they were happening.
The tension between Naevyn and Cairos is just as strong (if not stronger) than book one, and I am a sucker for good tension between characters! I love how in-depth we get to see characters' back stories, especially Bellamie! And learning that the true dragons live within the world, but below the ocean?! Never would have seen that coming.
While I didn’t find it as fast-paced and attention-grabbing as the first book, I still loved every minute of reading it!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Ok excuse me what the heck was that ending??? I have so many emotions over the events leading up to the end of this book, but I'm also left with so many questions that I really need answers to! The first book in this series, Vitalia, already had me hooked with this world, it's beauty, the characters and the plot. This second book just built on that so much more. The writing was captivating. the world was just so uniquely beautiful and we got to explore so much more of it. We meet some new characters and I just loved the journey with them so much. In this book we get both Naevyn and Cairos' POV and I loved getting to see things from his perspective.
We get so many more twists and turns, and after the twists at the end I absolutely can't wait to get my hands on book 3, I need answers, and things cannot end that way! Can I also just say I loved the extra spice we got in this books, oh boy seeing that side to Cairos was just 🔥🔥
If you like a good Dark Romantasy with tension, more spice, such beautiful world building and twists that will make you stay for the rest of the story then definitely check out this series, Circus Of Souls.
Thank you Eliza for the opportunity to read this before release. It's truly such a privilege 🙏🏼
Omg, we get put right were we left off in Vitalia. Naevyn and Cairos do not catch a break like they were hoping for and go straight into action onto another quest but this time they're searching for the true dragons.
This was indeed, a wild ride. Eliza knows how to suck you in and make you feel like you're there in that adventure. The world building is absolutely fantastic, the characters are amazing, you never know who to trust and nothing is quite as it seems. I loved that we get to see Naevyn trusting herself, after seeing her struggle throughout book 1, it was a nice to see that even though, she's alone (kinda), she is finally able to trust herself and her instincts. I was soooo very proud of her. The decisions that she has to make are not easy, they are absolutely devasting, and will cost everything.
The last 15% of the book had me sobbing, for many different reasons, and I was also blown tf away. Ughhh listen, if you haven't read Vitalia please go read it and then read this because it is a masterpiece of a series. 🤌🏽🤌🏽 now we gotta wait for book 3 👀👀
Review of Advanced Reader Copy received from the author.
My rating is actually 4.5. Let me just say that Dysphoria was a much welcomed sequel to Vitalia and added some of the world building and depth I felt were missing in Vitalia. That being said, I still would love some more character development, especially with Naevyn’s siblings (more in-depth appearances) and Hessa. I loved the interactions and banter between the characters, however.
This book had me hooked from the start and I love how it picked up from Vitalia. The way it ended has me craving the next book and I absolutely cannot wait for it to be released. I need to know how the cliffhanger is going to be resolved and what impact it will have on the characters moving forward.
And of course more of the intense bond between Cairos and Naevyn made me feel so many things. I love their dynamic and the way that they continue to grow and learn from and about each other. The way Eliza writes their interaction feels so true and natural and it makes me swoon. Looking forward to book 3!
"Because I love him. And loving someone makes you stupid about the choices they don't want you to make."
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Dysphoria, and it definitely didn’t disappoint.
The author’s writing style is chef’s kiss, it's engaging, immersive, and strong from start to finish. The dual POV worked really well, adding depth to the characters and creating subtle cliffhangers that kept the tension high throughout.
The pacing felt a bit uneven at times. Book 2 started incredibly strong, the middle section slowed down a little, and the ending ramped everything back up at breakneck speed.
And that ending… I hate it (in the best way). Not because it was bad, but because it leaves you hanging so hard. Now I’m stuck waiting for book 3 to see how it all ends.
If you enjoy strong writing, dual POVs, and high stakes, this is definitely one to add to your TBR.
Thank you to the author/publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is my first ARC review so thank you Eliza for the opportunity. I loved this series and cannot wait for the next book.
This was a great sequel. I loved the world building and love how the story was straight to the point with answering questions that were left off in the first book. It does kind of drag a bit towards the end but overall a great sequel with a cliffhanger. Hopefully the next book keeps up the momentum and Cairos and Nayven can solve their bond issue.
I loved seeing Nayven and Hessas friendship grow especially with her being away from Cairos. It allowed her to grow a bit in confidence but her she made some terrible choices in the end regarding how to save Orlia. She did the same thing that Cairos did to her and she kept it from him. Not cool 🙄 I don’t understand how she could have kept something that important from him. I thought she would have found a different way. I did love the angry spicy scenes they had tho 🌶️😂
“I think you want to finish this as much as I do.”
This the the second book in the Circus of Souls series. It, as the first book, follows Naevyn and Cairos. After the events of the first book they find themselves in the fae realm where they must navigate the political intrigue, curses and enemies to save their friends and break the bonds that needs breaking. This book in another great example of how a fantasy book is supposed to be written. I truly enjoyed reading this. I did find that this book had a couple of parts that were harder to comprehend. So in retrospect I loved book 1 slightly more. I loved how the bond between Naevyn and Cairos was further utilized, it made it feel like such an important part of them. The world that Eliza drew in the first book managed to draw me back into it, like I never left. So vivid. Naevyn and Cairos’s journey is full of twists, prophecies and emotional intensity, making this a must read for fans of fantasy romances.
Wow! Eliza Benner has done it again! The writing in Dysphoria is superb, the characters and locations are really brought to life by Eliza's descriptions. This book makes you feel a range of emotions from happiness to anger to sadness to hope. Dysphoria is the second book in the 'Circus of souls' series, and it picks up where Vitalia left off. Naevyn and Cairos are a formidable team, but they have more challenges to face and overcome. We see both characters in new ways, such as getting to see Cairos's more vulnerable side. The journey this time is to the underneath, in search of the true dragons and their soul magic. Naevyn hopes to free Bellamies mother Olia from her shadowstone cell of 6 centuries. Can or will the dragons help? We have new characters that will frustrate you as well as make you laugh. I'd highly recommend this series, and I know with this talent, Eliza will do great things.
I was lucky enough to be a part of Eliza's ARC team for Dysphoria, and I'm so greatful I had the opportunity, I truly am in love with this series and the characters!
Wow! What an ending! That’s what I call a cliffhanger!
Thank you so much for Eliza Benner for sending me an early copy of this book! I absolutely devoured the first book in the series and I was so excited to read this one. The story picks up where we left in book1 and although the pacing is slower the characters and the story is still spot on! Cairos is an exquisite MMC! He is possessive, cocky, strong and determined. He has shown only his good side during the entire book and I still love him! Naevyn our FMC haha faced a very difficult decision in this book and to her credit she handled it like a queen. Was I happy with the decision she had made? No, not really but it was an impossible one. She has shown again how far would she go for the people she cares about but regardless of how would have chosen someone would have suffered the consequences. The side characters haven’t been a lot in this book, it really focused on the development of Naevyn’a story so I am looking forward to seeing more of them in the next book. The banter once again was excellent! Overall I really liked the second book and can’t wait to dive into the next one in this series!
The king has been trapped, and there is a moment of peace for Naevyn, Cairos and their friends. But it can't last. They need to find a way to permanently get rid of the king without losing their dragon forms or harming Orlia, keep peace between the factions, and save the queen. Just a small "to do" list! They decide to find the true dragons for help. The world building in this book was once again fantastic. She brought us to a new realm that was beautiful and magical. Her descriptions of the worlds are great, and I am always able to picture them perfectly in my mind. But there's still something about the characters and their relationships that doesn't click for me, and I can't figure out why. I just don't connect to them like I usually do when I read. Naevyn frustrates me. She should have more confidence and strength at this point, but doesn't. The only time she truly showed conviction was when she was lying to her mate and making an awful decision for the both of them. Overall though, I enjoyed to book and I will read the next one to see what happens.
This book continues right after the events of the first book. Through the first half of the book I was really confused on why they were doing what they were doing. However all pieces truly started to come together and everything started to make sense. Book ends on a cliffhanger but not one that hurts to bad but one that makes you believe there is still hope you know? Lots of character development as well as new world building that continues to flow well with the overall story. Naevyn can be a frustrating FMC through this one but like again towards the end it’s like her decisions make sense and things needed to happen the way the needed to. This story feels new and fresh for the fantasy genre. I really enjoyed this and the broody/shadow daddy MMC is growing to be one of my favs!! I am so happy I got the opportunity to ARC read this one and can’t wait for the 3rd and final book to close out the story!
