Lobo (2026-) #1

Rate this book
VRRRRROOOOOOMMMMMMMM! The Main Man’s back, baby! And his ride is a motorcycle that moves at the speed of sound, but only if that sound is a rippin’ guitar solo, and you better hop on before he leaves you in the dust with all the bastiches he’s fragged for money or convenience! The Eisner-nominated creative team that brought you a fantastic parable of adolescence in the Midwest, the story of an artist who embraces darkness a little too closely, and the tale of a gunslinger with too much grit to stay buried brings you a classic yarn spun in the star-kissed threads of the cosmic DC Universe. It’s a guts-soaked path from DC K.O. to the end of the universe, where Lobo is going to scratch his name and number in the Source Wall with a cool knife. Don’t miss the mayhem, special guests, or tasty, tasty continuity! Don’t you do it!

Lobo #1 is exactly what it wants to be—loud, violent, wacky, and completely unhinged. Skottie Young leans hard into the meta humor and absurdity, and Jorge Corona’s art absolutely rips. Every page is chaotic in the best way, full of energy and detail that fits the tone perfectly.

That said… I’m not sure it’s for me. The book feels more like a vibe than a story at this point—fun in bursts, but a little too zany and over-the-top for what I usually look for. I can see this really clicking if you’re all in on Lobo’s brand of madness, but I’m still waiting for something to ground it a bit.

I’ll stick around for another issue or two, but right now it’s a solid, stylish start that just doesn’t fully land for me.

The story is not the greatest but man, the art.

Jorge Corona is perfect to keep going the legacy of Keith Giffen.

Loved it.

Ok.

So I didn't order this when I saw the advanced preview because I knew it wasn't really my thing. But, because I really love what DC are doing at the moment, I ended up ordering a copy just so I would at least have the initial Next Level #1's in my collection.

And I was right. There wasn't much I took away from this other than the impression of a second rate 2000AD serial (which isn't surprising considering the most emulated version of this character came from Lobo's Back which was co-written by Judge Dredd creator, Alan Grant)
So while the ultraviolence and subversive chaos seemed funny to me as a twenty something, it's very one note and tired out now. Also setting Lobo up as a reality star doesn't seem as topical and satirical as it might have been 15-20 years.

A couple of splash pages were entertaining enough to look at I guess, but really this isn't for me and I can't see the plotline having much gas to carry through for many issues.

DC has been doing a great job with jumping on points for their ongoing titles so I was curious about a genuine #1. Especially given a suggestion these will have an "absolute" vibe.
This book is tricky, I actually think they do an excellent job of delivering a "pure" Lobo comic. The problem is that I don't think I actually like him that much outside of his appearance in Superman the animated series. His schtick quickly tired me unless he's playing off a "straight" superhero as it highlights how he is a parody. In isolation he comes off as a bit annoying/dull.
Now there's every possibility this is what will happen with the rest of the series as the final page delivers a set up where they can highlight how ridiculous he is. The rub is that they may just revel in his loboness. I'll wait and see from other reviews which way they'll take it.
I've said elsewhere, that if something is meant to be a comedy it needs to make me laugh, and this book didn't, so I'm stuck with that. Comedy is subjective though and I wouldn't be surprised if others find this funny. The Wolverine Vs Deadpool barbs could be funny for instance.
Young does go out of his way to introduce the character so this may work well for people who may be interested in the character for Momoa's upcoming film portrayal. My problem was that it felt like an info dump and I'll be honest I couldn't be bothered with reading several pages of what felt like a class assignment/AI summary of the character's history.

The art is great and I genuinely thought it was Scottie Young so fans of that cartoony style will be really happy. It feels like movie Guardians mixed with 2000AD comics.

I think long term fans of Lobo can easily make this a 4* review and I'd encourage them to check it out. I also think new readers interested in Lobo because of the Supergirl movie will find this a good intro - although they may want to wait for the trade and until they see the movie (and whether the Film portrayal fits the comic version).

Overall = 2/5
Writing = 1/5
Art = 4/5

Will I read the next issue? No

Wait for the trade collection? Possibly, as the main story only really starts on the final page.

Did I need to read previous issues/series? No

YES!! THIS THE WHAT THE MAIN MAN IS ALL ABOUT. Young’s genius writing and Corona’s art fills with life mixed with Beaulieu’s vibrant covers just shot this up to be my favorite book. I feel a legendary run in the making from the first issue alone, absolutely glorious!! They do so much so well and I openly found myself laughing at so much when it came to anything Lobo was doing or any odd thing hanging around in the background. We start this issue with some standard Lobo bounty hunter activities Ashe rides his space hog, Dawg adorning it, to park at a chug n slug space pub. He is immediately accosted by a small green alien who points to the large no parking sign next to where Lobo parked. Lobo doesn’t even wait for him to finish talking before ripping off his arm and using the blood to replace the “no” in no parking to become “lobo parking” leaving Dawg behind to watch the hog. As lobo gets inside he grabs a drink but is interrupted by a few “caterbillies” laughing away in the corner. The bartender explains they are obsessed with a new another movie, prompting lobo to ask what that even is. It’s basically a villain that kills while making jokes with a shoehorned in honorable reason for doing it…Lobo can’t stand mindless guppy content like that to fulfill the needs of fraggers who think a bunch of gratuitous violence mixed with juvenile humor and a dash of outdated pop culture references is entertaining…doesn’t lobo have such a way with words and self reflection? LMAO. Lobo immediately bashes into their group and takes one of them by the shirt, prompting them to ask what his deal is. In a heavy puff of cigar smoke which spells out “once upon a time” lobo tells them his deal going all the way back to the near perfect planet of Czarnia until the man man literally busted into the scene. He was called a devil and they tried to teach him but nothing nice took (other than maybe his care for the space dolphins we briefly see, love those) and Lobo ultimately got bored and decided to relieve the universe of their perfection. This time his story for how he killed the entire planet was using putting his genocide pee in the water supply. With everyone else out he became the last Czarnian and spent the next few hundred years adventuring. He has met Santy Claus at the North Pole, he went to heaven and he’ll he got turned into lady Lobo, be met a guy who wears his underpants on the outside and did the swirly thing with his hair but acts like it’s natural (lol), and there is a period of his life during the new 52 where he was drastically different and he would rather just gloss over it. He’s brought people into this world took most of them out later (what’s up Crush) and more recently he fought a lady (Wonder Woman) who doesn’t even pretend to wear pants and he kinda crushed on. “And that’s the story of how I became the baddest mother-fragger alive!”

Except this r the story was a little unnecessary as the dude just wanted to know why Lobo was here in this bar right now. Lobo even admits that’s his bad as he explains he is here for a bounty, a dweeb named Whit Dusty…but wouldn’t you know it, the man he is currently talking to is Whit Dusty but he doesn’t have a bounty. But it is also true that he used to work for the Kintuk Yee Crime Syndicate…so he does have a bounty on him. Lobo immediately pulls out his very large gun with “look here” printed on the blast area…only for Dawg to show up and interrupt him, coughing out his ringing flip phone. On the other end is his boss trying to reach him to inform him the bounty had been cancelled. Turns out his bosses bounty business has been bought out, the bounty is officially off and Whit is free to go, and now if Lobo wanes to make this right and get paid he has to go to the “Omni Mega+ Entertainment Corp” HQ. They are the largest media conglomerate in known existence and as he makes his way to the packed lobby elevator, someone suddenly walks up and says help to him. But lobo doesn’t like people addressing him all casual like if he doesn’t know them, he is enraged by this and immediately whips around and blasts away everyone in that lobby. The person, with a giant tv screen configuration for half of their head, anticipated a response like this and actually approached him as a projection. Suddenly ushering Lobo to the elevator to meet Mr Kzzt, which I can only imagine is pronounced like tv static. Lobo is a little confused why the corp in charge of making the most schat movies and even schattier shows in all existence are the ones paying his unkill fee, but as Lobo gets into the office of Mr Kzzt he explains that there is a small correction to lobo’s confusion…as they have changed their corp name to Omni Omega+ Entertainment Corp as they are the galaxy’s largest omega corporation. Lobo really doesn’t care about that and instead cares about getting paid what he is owed and why he had to come here to do it. Well that’s simple…O.O.E.C. is now the pride power of the entire bail bond and bounty hunter business. They didn’t just buy Naco’s business, they bought everyone. Lobo and dawg both break down and fall to the floor in a laughing fit as that is the stupidest thing they have ever heard. But Kzzt assures them it was not a drunk night impulse buy, and in fact the anti hero business is the fastest growing sector for comment and they want to control all of it. They are about Kate to the trend with the other movie we saw people watching earlier, but the sheer mention of it enrages Lobo as he hates it and he wants his money before he kills everyone in this room. Kzzt continues to explain that the only thing their “viewers like more than escapist fiction…is realtity. Or a highly manipulated and controlled glimpse into what we sell them as reality.” But lobo didn’t care for the worlds being spit at him and as he talks Kzzt in his hand ready to attack him, suddenly lobo is surrounded by guards ready to take him down if he doesn’t comply. Lobo isn’t usually in the conplyin’ mood but with how they talk to hon he is ready to comply all of them!! He throws Kzzt back and whips out his hook in the most glorious fashion as he begins to rip and tear through all of them. As the elevator dings once more and he is surrounded by even more guards he call out:

“Y’all better call home and let yer significant others know you’re gonna be late for dinner ‘cause yer stuck in a meetin’. And by stuck in a meetin’, I mean dead.”

As lobo is rampaging forward he suddenly stops and whips around and locks eyes with a very scared guard after they shot him right in the hip. He lunges at them and continues to smash and break through all of them until he finally finished and Kzzt called for him to stop. Kzzt proceeds to explain that this is exactly why they want him at OOEC, and they he will be able to make more than he can every imagine by becoming the STAR of their new reality show where they pull back the curtain on the world of bounty hunting with the MAIN MAN as their guide!! HAAHAHAHA! GENIUS but no shot in hell this won’t crash and burn within a few issues, this entire “omega” corp has no idea what they are doing and I love it!!

I had a great time with this issue. I’ve always been a fan of Lobo; his over-the-top personality, chaotic history, and the mix of brilliance and absurdity that defines his lore. This issue serves primarily as an introduction, giving readers a clear sense of who Lobo is, where he comes from, and laying the groundwork for what this arc, or possibly the larger series, will explore.
The artwork is a major highlight. It perfectly captures the wild, unhinged tone that Lobo stories thrive on, leaning into the character’s zaniness without losing clarity or impact. Visually, it’s engaging from start to finish.
As for the story, I enjoyed it, but it definitely feels like a setup issue more than a fully developed chapter. There’s not a ton of forward momentum yet, but it does enough to hook interest and make me want to see where things go next.
At this point, I’d recommend it, especially for fans of Lobo, but I can also understand why his style and tone might not click with everyone.

Kudos to the big brut (Lobo) who talks his sh*t and takes names all in one breath.

This was slapstick comedy in a comic book. Lobo is fun in a dark, gritty kind of way. It was giving Gertrude (from I Hate Fairyland) and now I see why, they were created from the same brain in Skottie Young! The parallels are essentially hard to miss. And I enjoy some Gert so it's only right I'd find the same enjoyment with Lobo.He just doesn't GAF and I can respect it because he definitely backs up the sh*t he talks. Causing a ruckus everywhere he goes, I can't much blame him. This to me is a near perfect setup up for a great series to come. I thoroughly enjoyed it. 4.5/5!

Corona’s art is the main draw here - and it’s spectacular. Every page makes you want to pore over it for little sight gags and commands you to marvel at every line. His character designs are absurd in the best way, even for background figures that will only show up once and never have a line.

The story and dialogue are pretty good, and I found the satirical element to work well enough. I’m curious about how pointed DC will let Young’s jokes get. The setup here morris what’s currently going on with Paramount and Warner Bros, and that might start to hit close to home.

I'm no longer a Lobo virgin, so i need a cigar after reading this satisFRAGtory number one. I may have criticized Corona's artwork on the first part his Transformers run but i want it to be clear he's a good artist, I just don't feel like it fit with that title, however it more than works for the tone of Lobo, scratchy, blocky and comfortably messy fits Lobo to a T. more Main Man madness to come and im ready for it. Also shout out to Skottie Young.

Lobo is a unique outer space biker bounty Hunter created by Keith Giffen.

This is an entertaining version that tries to duplicate the Giffen art, the storytelling is similar but not quite the original.

In this story we find lobo going into a bar with his general bombastic attitude. He complains about some intergalactic superhero movie, ends up telling his version of his origin story. And at the end of the book he is drafted to be the lead star of a bounty hunter reality show.

Classic ****** time is back

Alan Grant (looking down) and Simon Bisley will be proud.
Great start to first ongoing Lobo series for a while (ignoring the new 52 disaster completely), loved Jorge Corona on Transformers and he is very welcome here.
Def be back for #2, now if it only DC could get Bisley on covers.....

I really enjoyed this. You can’t go wrong with Skottie Young. It seems like any other violence-filled antihero story, but the art and colors makes this such a fun read. I like that the story doesn’t take itself too serious, because neither will I. This can be a chill series to get through. I’m excited to see where this goes

This is a new story arc for everyone's favourite mother frakin anti-hero bounty hunter.
This issue only showcases the violent nature of Lobo and his origin story (in a couple of pages) for the new readers.
A super powerful media house offers to make Lobo rich by making him an offer to star in a reality show.
The main plot will begin from the next issue.

I have to be honest, I didn’t think this was going to be a good issue but it was. The art is amazing, and the story is compelling. Yea some of the jokes are hit or misses but overall it’s a good story. I’m interested to see where it goes.

My first time reading Lobo—and what an introduction.
Chaotic, brutal, and wildly aggressive, yet packed with dark humor and explosive visuals. This issue doesn’t hold back for a second.
It’s loud, violent, over-the-top space madness—and honestly, I’m all in.
Give me more. 💥

I am not, nor have I ever been, a fan of Lobo. I always felt he was overrated. That being said, this issue was great. It was funny and full of action. It also makes fun of the anti-hero phenomenon that everyone loves so much.
