Mission Accomplished: A Two-Week Family Easter Devotional

Rate this book
Celebrate the Greatest Rescue Mission in History! Nearly 2,000 years ago, a simple wooden cross and an empty tomb served as the setting for the greatest rescue mission in history—the good news of a loving Father going to great lengths to save his broken children. Every year at Easter, with a joyful shout of "Christ is risen!" we declare again the climax of this great story. Although Easter Sunday only happens once a year, the truths behind it are big enough to shape our lives every single day. Starting on Palm Sunday, your family will spend two weeks (fourteen devotions) walking in time with Jesus as he finished the work his Father had given him. Extending your devotional time into the week beyond Easter Sunday will encourage your family to follow the risen Jesus as he calls his disciples on a Spirit-filled mission to spread the good news to all nations. Your family will learn that God calls every Christ follower to that very same task, promising that his power and presence will help us as we go. Each devotion takes just ten-minutes and is suitable for all ages of children. Included are suggestions for hymns to sing and family activities that give you a chance to remember and apply the truth that Christ is risen indeed!

"A delightful, biblical, practical help for family worship during the Easter season. It connects the passion of Christ with the purpose of God, beckoning families to play our part in the greatest mission in all of history—the redemption of men and women all over the world."

Great family Easter devotional that spans the week prior to Easter and the week after. Simple discussion questions, and loved the corresponding hymns.

An excellent family devotional for Easter! Loved how it went into the week after Easter and discussed the impact of Christ's resurrection and our mission more extensively.

I really enjoyed Scott James’ Mission Accomplished: A Two-Week Family Easter Devotional. Mission Accomplished: A Two-Week Family Easter Devotional is designed to be started on Palm Sunday and to finish the week after Easter. Each entry has a Bible reference, a “Think About It” section, a “Talk About it” section, and a “Pray About It” section. Each entry also alternates between a “Sing About It” section with a hymn that corresponds with the devotion or a “Family Activity” to do that corresponds with that particular devotion.

I am always on the look out for devotionals that help children celebrate Easter and Christmas and I believe Mission Accomplished: A Two-Week Family Easter Devotional meets that need. I like how Mission Accomplished explains certain aspects of the Easter Story so that everyone can understand what is going on. The book even suggests certain Bible translations to make the Bible reference easy to understand. I like how well the “Think About It” and “Talk About It” sections are intertwined. I also like how the questions in the “Talk About It” section also give guided suggestions on how to answer the questions if the kids get stuck. I loved how it introduces children to traditional hymns that they may not have known about.

I think Mission Accomplished: A Two-Week Family Easter Devotional is a good resource to help your family celebrate Easter. I believe that each devotion will help your family keep the meaning of Easter before you and that everyone in the family will learn a lot. I highly recommend this book!

An excellent two-week devotional for the Easter Season. It begins on Palm Sunday, and goes through the Saturday following Easter. A great mix of Bible-reading, explanation, prayer and activities/singing. Since my family does our devotionals before bedtime, we did not do the craft/activities (about every other one), but we did do the singing. Most of the hymns are very familiar ones, although if you are not from a traditional worship background, you might not be able to sing or use them. All in all, a great way to get a big picture of God's redemptive plan to save a people for Himself through Jesus' death and resurrection! We've now used it the last two years around Easter, and have enjoyed it both times.

This was our second year doing this devotional as a family. The book begins on Palm Sunday and leads you through holy week, then continues for a week after Easter, focusing on the importance of the resurrection. Each devotional contains a scripture reading, some guiding thoughts, and discussion questions. Some days include a family activity or song, but we did not do any of those. Each reading only takes about 10 minutes, and our family had great discussions in which the children felt comfortable speaking up. The final devotion left us a little confused on the author’s eschatology, but otherwise the book was biblically solid, and a great way to focus our minds during the Easter season.

This is a great family devotional. The content is really good and accessible for most ages. The only reason I wouldn’t give this a 5-star rating is because the songs used in the book might not be known to an audience who attends a service at their church which uses more “contemporary” music, so parents might not know how to sing the hymns with their kids. Some of the hymns are also lesser known songs, which might make it more challenging to learn.

I would like to try this one again in a few years! It was just a bit beyond my kids' comprehension (at 5 and 4).

This is a perfect little family devotional.

It is simply written and designed, but the simplicity is the "Jesus cast a look on me" kind, not the "box of chocolates" kind. The writing is perfectly gauged so that it can be read aloud and understood by all the members of the family without being boring or condescending.

Such simplicity looks easy, but is difficult to achieve. Scott James nailed it, to his credit. Here's a brief example.
The criminals on the two crosses next to Jesus show us that Jesus is ready to save anyone who has faith in him. One criminal refused to believe Jesus and remained separated from God, but the other criminal saw who Jesus really was and trusted in him as Rescuer.
Here, clearly, is a theology buff who talks to his kids intelligently but remembers their frames. Children are smart. What you have over them is experience and knowledge. Shepherding requires sweet simplicity. Eschew obfuscation, or even my temptation, which would be overwrought poesy.

But the writing isn't really the reason I got excited when I examined the book. It is its structure that is simple, beautiful, and useful.

The first half of the book covers Holy Week, and the second Easter Week. The brief devotions begin on Palm Sunday and progress through to the Saturday after Easter, what the Easterners call Bright Saturday. The readings and lessons, obviously, are relevant to those particular days. The children walk deliberately through death and resurrection in a well-thought-out way.

Each day's reading and lesson are brief and elegant, with a Think About It and a Talk About It section. This is followed by a Pray About It, which often has a personalized missional slant to it, reinforcing to the family that Jesus came to save the world and is even now accomplishing it through the commission he gave to all Christians, including our children.

And finally, the bit of the book's structure that really made me fall in love: each day includes stuff that you do with your body. Many of the days have a Sing About It section in which we sing familiar hymns such as The Church's One Foundation and Christ the Lord Is Risen Today. And many of the days have a Family Activity, which is usually a craft, but can also be a simple deed of love and mercy. The reason this struck me as particularly poetic is that Easter, along with Christmas, is essentially incarnational. And Easter is the validation of the Incarnation. The cosmos, the world, is made right, and even now is being made right. Our lives on earth are vindicated, and the things we do have meaning and purpose. So Scott James urges us to do things. This is what separates this particular Easter devotional from many others.

In our family we have devotional readings, and we do something more hands-on, like Resurrection Eggs. This book has integrated all of that in a easy-to-do format. I recommend it to you, brother.

Looking for an easy to use resource for helping your kids go deeper into the Bible story this Easter? Scott James has given us a beautiful resource in his book "Mission Accomplished: A Two-Week Family Easter Devotional" (New Growth Press, 2015). This book is intended to lead families through a devotional each day the week before and the week following Easter.

I’ll jump to the chase. Get this book, and order it now. Westminster Bookstore has it for only $10.50! You still have time to get this by Palm Sunday.

I haven’t seen another devotional that is as Gospel-centered and true to the text, nor one as helpful and clearly laid out, as this little two-week devotional.

Each day’s reading is organized as follows: a selection of Scripture to be read, a short devotional (about 1 page), discussion questions (with answers for the parents), a suggestion about what to pray about in response to the lesson, and then either a family activity or a song to sing that is related to the lesson. The activities are usually a craft that is engaging for young minds. The songs are hymns. I appreciate that the text is not included, this will help kids learn to interact with their own Bibles.

The illustrations by A.E. Macha are bright and cheerful, but not overpowering. The insights and connections with the Old Testament (particularly the Passover and the sacrificial lamb), are very helpful and simple enough for young children to understand. I suspect that elementary and middle school children will be most appreciative of the book, but it can be used with even younger children.

I highly recommend this work and trust it will be a blessing to Christian families everywhere.

***A terrific family devotional for Easter!***

Mission Accomplished: A Two-Week Family Easter Devotional, by Scott James and
A.E. Macha, New Growth Publishing, 2015, 978-1939946577, $13.99

Scott James, pediatric surgeon and devoted father wrote this fourteen day devotional, Mission Accomplished with families in mind. The first week begins with Palm Sunday and ends with "The Dark Day in Between," with Jesus in the tomb. The second week, "when Jesus' rescue mission seems to have failed," focuses on death's defeat and Christ's resurrection. His conversations with the disciples and the "marching orders" Christ gave to the disciples to spread His message to the world, what we know as the "Great Commission."
