Rate this book
Dashing, devoted, and deftly disguised, he needs to tell her his secret. Just not quite yet…

Though William Alwyn, a doctor’s apprentice, longs to propose to Belinda Everson, he knows he may be accused of trickery when Society discovers his true identity. So, he decides to hold his tongue on all matters of importance until he can irrefutably prove his honour and merit.

Secretly smitten, Belinda has watched Mr Alwyn tend to her ailing mother for months. While bidding her farewell, he kindles her hopes with an unexpected kiss, then disappears entirely in the weeks that follow. Determined she will not languish for a man who has forgotten her, Belinda goes to London with her aunt. But when a sudden malady brings Mr Alwyn to their doorstep, she fears her heart may break again.

Seeing Miss Everson in town, Alwyn feels pressed to lay bare the truth of his love and lineage. Just as the confession is on his lips, a grudging gossip appears, set on revealing him to all the world. When finally, Alwyn declares himself to Belinda, he cannot know if she will spurn the offer of his heart, or entrust her own to him forever.

Brimming with Victorian charm, With Pensive Admiration is a clever-words, kisses-only tale of a match that must be made!

This is a charming Victorian story that follows the various missteps and miscommunications during the romance between William Alwyn, a 24-year-old doctor's apprentice working and studying in London, and Miss Belinda Everson, a coach driver's daughter living in Trippingham.

Both are more than they seem. Belinda benefits from being the niece of Mrs. Rose Caspar, a former London actress who married Mr. Caspar, a wealthy gentleman, and lives in a fine London townhome. As a result of long visits with her aunt Rose, Belinda has excellent manners and received more education than the average working class girl. And Mr. Alwyn has a secret he hasn't even shared with Dr. Felix, to whom he is apprenticed. He has his reasons to keep his identity close to the vest.

Alwyn and Belinda have already fallen in love with each other when the book opens--though neither is aware the other shares the same feelings--over the course of his weekly visits to Trippingham treating Mrs. Everson for inflammation of her lungs. The patient has improved and no longer requires his services, so Alwyn realizes he must speak to Miss Everson during this last visit. He doesn’t feel right asking her to marry him when a mere apprentice does not earn enough to support a wife and family. It is now six weeks until his scheduled appointment with the Court of Examiners. After that, assuming he has proven himself worthy to be called "doctor," Alwyn will be able to speak plainly. In the meantime, he intends to continue his weekly visits, now with the aim of courting Miss Everson rather than treating her mother.

He drops some pointed hints about his future plans but never explains himself clearly enough for Belinda to understand his indirect message. Just before he leaves, he tenderly kisses her hand, encouraging her to hope he cares for her…

…until he fails to return, which leads Belinda to believe she must have misunderstood his intentions. After all, she’s only the daughter of a coachman, and he’s about to become a doctor.

She goes to visit her aunt in London to think about her own future. If she isn’t destined to marry the man she loves, she considers becoming a paid companion instead. Alwyn, obliged to stay and tend to patients in London with no time to return to Trippingham as he’d planned, is as frustrated as she is. They are startled to encounter each other again when he is called to tend to Mr. Caspar, who falls ill during Belinda’s visit.

All characters are richly drawn with distinct personalities, from the likeable star-crossed lovers, to Theodore Sliger (a well-meaning schoolmate of Alwyn’s), to Mrs. Ophelia Hartley (a kind-hearted but opinionated older woman), to Miss Dora Harley (her very visually-impaired daughter), to Dr. Felix and his dear wife, Aggie. Ms. Walnofer has a lovely way with words, and the pacing is just right. There are no villains here, just misunderstandings that keep Alwyn and Belinda from coming to an understanding until the climactic scene. The resolution may not be particularly credible, but the romantic in me couldn’t help finding it eminently satisfying. It’s a sweet, enjoyable read.

Content is clean.

I went into this only knowing minor details about the book & let me just start off by saying I read this in less than 24 hours! So, it must have been good! 🤩
This was my first romance novel I’ve read that takes place in the Victorian Era.
Alwyn was my favorite character. He is the SWEETEST man ever & his generosity when no one even knew about it was truly touching. He was hard working, ambitious, and the true definition of not knowing how truly great you are! This book was only 186 pages on my kindle & it packed a punch for not being terribly long!

Also, loved to find out there are real life people in history, briefly weaved into this story! So cool! (You’ll have to read for yourself to find out who 🤐😆)

Definitely recommend if you like Victorian romances or want to give one a try! I want to read more by this author now! 😄

I did receive a copy of this book from the author.
My review is honest and of my own opinion.

I am not, as a rule, a fan of romances. That said, I make an exception for Walnofer’s historical romances, because they are just. so. good. It’s a difficult thing to write a good historical romance. But Walnofer always seems to get it right. Her stories are historical without being pedantic and accurate without being dull. Her books are always a pleasure to read.

“Then please allow me to tell you that I have long been convinced that we are perfect for one another—or rather that you are perfect for me and I promise I will strive to be so for you.” As a glisten of tears formed in her eyes, he pressed her hand. “Can you not believe me sincere?”

This hidden identity story from a new to me author was delightful. It’s full of family, friendship, and a sweet romance.

Alwyn is intelligent, committed, and humble. I loved his secret! I loved his relationship with his Aunt. I loved his determination to prove himself as a doctor even if it postponed his happiness. He is generous and caring. He was so charming and I loved his interactions with Lindy even if they were a tad awkward at times. His devotion to winning her heart was fantastic. Belinda (Lindy) is gentle, kind, and besotted. I loved how much she adored Alwyn. Her disappointment and second-guessing herself was heartbreaking. I adored her Aunt and Uncle and her friendship with Dora was so special. Alwyn and Lindy’s ability to withstand their unusual circumstances and miscommunication was wonderful. Those last few chapters were a roller coaster but Alwyn and Lindy found a wonderful happily ever after.

A few more quotes:
“I think that fellow is… quite taken with you.” Belinda’s heart thumped, but she shook her head. “You mistake his purpose. He comes here to see you.” “Don’t play coy, poppet… I’m not blind… to these matters.”

“No, he is not mischievous. He wants to be a doctor in honour of his late mother. I cannot believe he meant to mislead anyone.”

“I’ve admired her for so long. Every moment I’ve spent with her has convinced me further how well-suited we are for one another, but I haven’t dared to speak of it.”

This book was provided by the author. I was not required to give a positive review, rating and opinions are my own.

Imagine my joy when I realized that Belinda and Alwyn were getting their very own love story! As someone who gets awfully attached to characters I am always grateful to get an opportunity to revisit familiar characters and get to know them better. A.E. Walnofer also writes some of the most delightful and multilayered characters. Alwyn, for example whose desire is to pursue an honest career as a doctor while hiding a scandalous secret from everyone he knows made him an even more charming and easy to love gentleman. The care that Belinda's aunt Rose and uncle George show their niece is always endearing and I love how this family cares for its own throughout all the stories I've read. I love that Belinda remains humble and isn't entitled or presumptuous even when she is enjoying time with her aunt and uncle. Though maybe a bit naive, she is still a lovely young woman intent on bettering herself. It is always fun to be strung alongside the love struck characters, unsure about how things are going to turn out and even getting upset when things aren't playing out as planned. It always makes the ending highly anticipated and might be why I simply couldn't set this book down. A new favorite of mine for sure! A great read for anyone who enjoys a wholesome romance.

“With Pensive Admiration” by A.E. Walnofer is a delightful romance novel set in the Victorian times.

I adored reading about the love story between Belinda (known to her family affectionately as Lindy) and Sir William Alwyn (who is actually William Alwyn Charford Wirth, the Viscount Farrmore). I enjoyed reading about the obstacles that arose between them and I had such sympathy for the circumstances that each of them were in the midst of.

Reading about the challenges, for both women and those who were not privileged to be born into Upper Society, was sobering. One quote that really stood out to me and I’ve been thinking about ever since I read it was said by Belinda: “‘Want’ is rarely a factor for women as they plot their lives, Mr. Alwyn.” It made me so happy that Lindy did in fact have some choice in her life.

It was so refreshing to read a kisses-only Victorian romance novel.

This was a sweet book, and I plan to read more by A.E. Walnofer in the future.

What a sweet story! As we are dropped into the lives/situations of Lindy and Alwyn, it was wonderful to see how the quest for genuine connection and being recognized for one’s abilities and “genuine self” outshone all of the social posturing often present in society.

This clean historical romance was a bit different than the normal one, and as such, a very fun read! I loved the two main characters with their awkward interactions and the character growth that made the happy ending so satisfying! The colorful side characters also created a vivid palate for the story to unfold. I received an ARC copy and this is my review.

With Pensive Admiration, a beautifully written historical romance, I was left with a warm smile. The author’s meticulous attention to historical accuracy made every chapter a delight to read. I particularly appreciated the clean romance, a rarity in contemporary literature. The story featured honorable men, proper ladies, and admiral doctors, all of whom I found endearing. I especially enjoyed the women and their limited choices during this era. But the icing on the cake was the sweet romance.

This was a sweet and easy romance set in the same world as the Whitehall romances were. I like to think of this as a “spin off” since this story had a dual POV instead of the multiple POV from the prior trilogy. While this is a standalone novel, I do recommend reading the Whitehall Romances before this one as many of the characters within this book are featured heavily in the prior trilogy.

Pros - One of my favorite things about this author is her characters are more “working class heroes” than your stereotypical historical romance characters.

Cons - The wait for the next in this series may do me in. It will be worth it though.

No spoilers but I’m wondering… Will Thaddeus get a redemption story? Or will the next book be centered on my two favorite side characters from “With Pensive Admiration”? 😉

Overall -⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2 stars

This is such a fun book! Walnofer has a strong suit in writing endearing characters rich with personality, no matter their role. I laughed a lot while reading and felt so bad for the characters when things weren't going their way! The female friendship in this was especially dear to me. I'm excited for the next book and am catching up on the others in the meantime!

I haven’t read about a nobleman doctor before. I didn’t even know it was possible for them to take up a profession besides managing their own estates (although Alwyn mentions he has a capable and trusted steward).

Speaking of Alwyn, his anonymous generosity and selflessness were truly admirable. His motivation for becoming a doctor, while sad, added even more depth to his character.

Belinda (Lindy) wants to be useful, but feels torn between two worlds: her life as a coachman’s daughter and the opportunities her wealthy aunt is able to give her.

This upbringing actually made Lindy a perfect match for Alwyn, since she would be well-suited for her role as a proper viscountess and as a doctor’s wife.

Despite the sometimes frustrating miscommunications, Alwyn and Lindy’s thinking remained fairly reasonable given the information they had.

They also weren’t suddenly rude to each other because of the misunderstandings, just uncertain and a bit confused.

If you don’t read a lot of Regency/Victorian romance, several words in the story would probably be unfamiliar. However, the context of the sentence usually made the meaning clear enough.

I honestly hadn’t considered a potential romance between Sliger and Dora. But they would be a fun couple! At the very least, he would let Dora wear her spectacles in peace 😂

Alwyn and Lindy are two of the most beautiful people portrayed in this story, inside and out. Lindy is a Coachman's daughter but with relatives in a higher class that adore her and dote on her.

Lindy struggles to feel like she fits in with any of that society, but she does her best when the time calls for it. Her mannerisms are quirky and endearing as she has a few moments of complete despair when she embarrasses herself doing something silly. Something as simple as cutting a string with her teeth lodges a sewing project attached to her mouth.

I was able to easily relate with her because of those elements of her character. She's mild mannered and cares deeply for those that she lets into her space. But she makes plenty of funny moments in her wake as well.

Alwyn is equally caring about those in his life. He's a doctor's apprentice and only weeks away from taking his exam and making it official. But as he's been helping Lindy's mother overcome her ailments, he has quickly fallen for Lindy. But he's holding a very dear secret that he can't tell her and he won't propose to her until he takes his exam, proving himself accomplished and worthy of her affections.

But this is a huge miscalculation on his part because this then leads to so many misunderstandings and missed cues that Lindy believes he is actually disinterested in her. The signals are all over the place and Alwyn spends the last few chapters trying to straighten out all that's been misunderstood.

A loveable cast of beautifully flawed characters that have to make a path to happiness their own. It's buried in the trees and only when the final result is seen, do they both realize how much they mean to each other.

Keeping Secrets . . .

William Alwyn is working as a doctor’s apprentice, determined to be appreciated for the work he does rather than the secret he keeps to himself. He finds himself attracted to Belinda Everson, a coachman’s daughter, but he won't propose marriage until he has completed his apprenticeship and is a successful doctor able to fully support them financially. Unknown to him, Belinda is likewise attracted to Mr. Alwyn as he takes care of her ailing mother. But completing his appointment one day, he goes to London and is delayed with caring for other patients. Belinda has no idea why he left her without any explanation and didn't come back. So she and her Aunt decide to go to London since she is not intending to wait around for Mr. Alwyn to decide to show up again. When William, still in London, responds to an illness, he is surprised to find Belinda answering the door! Will he tell her the truth about how he feels about her and will he reveal his real "secret" to her? Will she reject him if she fears society will scorn him for choosing her? Or will she accept his proposal once he feels he has earned the right as a doctor to ask her to be his?

With Pensive Admiration opens with Belinda and her quiet affection for Alwyn, a doctor‑in‑training who has been caring for her mother. Alwyn carries a secret he’s desperate to keep hidden, and Belinda isn’t sure whether the warmth she senses from him is real or simply her imagination. What if she risks her heart only to discover he sees her as nothing more than a friend?

I absolutely loved this book. The glimpse into the past is fascinating and makes you wonder what romance truly looked like in that era. The waiting, the longing, the hope tucked inside every letter — how different and how beautifully slow it all was. It made me want to bring that kind of romance back.

Watching these two young people quietly pine for each other was such a delight. It’s a lovely, tender story that captures the sweetness of early love and the charm of a bygone time.

This was a fun story from a new-to-me author! It was original and surprising in the best ways as it explored the relationship between a doctor and the object of his affection. I have never enjoyed misunderstandings more as Mr. Alwyn tried to insinuate his feelings without success.

"If I’m to be wounded again – and that seems certain – I must be my true self as it happens."

I enjoyed the clever writing and good pacing of this story. It gives some "Artful Dodger" feels with a twist and I found myself really celebrating the slow burn on their road to a HEA. I will definitely read this author again!

This is a charming historical, clean romance. I loved the character Alwyn, his strength, his determination and his humble demeanor made him the perfect gentleman. His only flaw was second-guessing himself. Belinda (Lindy) is a lowly coachman’s daughter, but has opportunities to socialize with the upper class. She is sweet and helpful and has resigned herself to becoming a ladies companion. The story is fairly mild, not a lot of drama or angst. A sweet romance with a few twist and turns. It makes for an easy quick read that will warm your heart and make you smile. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

With Pensive Admiration was a very different regency romance than I usually enjoy. The language was more formal, but the characters and plot took me in and it flowed well, making me eager to see how it ended. It definitely ended in a way I wasn’t expecting. It reminded me a bit of Julie Klassen style of writing.

The two main characters were both wonderful. I like how the story progressed giving you a little information about them at a time. I knew there was more to their stories and it kept me reading because I wanted to learn more about the characters as well as the plot.

With Pensieve Admiration is the first story I’ve read by A.E. Walnofer, and I was impressed. This was a wonderful book, and I thoroughly enjoyed both protagonists and their progression. I particularly appreciate the clean romance beginning immediately. They were both honorable and faithful to each other. The author did a great job at developing an interesting plot, and there some unique details that I think helped make the story stand out. Overall, this was a great story, and I recommend it to those looking for clean, Victorian romances.

I loved this story! It grabbed my attention from the beginning and made me feel part of the lives of the characters. It’s my first time reading from this author and it won’t be my last. This is a sweet and clean Victorian romance that’ll warm your heart.

Belinda is intelligent, kind and compassionate besides beautiful, and that struck our beloved William, the doctor’s apprentice. But there’s more to William than the profession he’d chosen, a secret identity he’s trying to conceal at all cost.

She’s only a coachman’s daughter and even though that’s not detrimental to William, she thinks he’ll be shut out of all polite society for choosing her. And that’s when he determines to show her, and the world, what he thinks of the so called polite society 😀

Belinda ❤️ William

I loved all the medical references with William being a doctor’s apprentice 💉🩺🔬🩸🧠💪🏻🧬📚

And it always fascinates me when authors include historical notes and/or facts and with their creativity they make some kind of seamless inclusions in their stories. I’m always looking for those at the end of the stories 🤷🏻‍♀️

I also loved, the Caspars, the Felixes, Aunt Joan, and Dora. All these characters make the main characters shine their virtues, whether is compassion and generosity or humor and wit, they all add so much to the story.

And that climax was unexpected 😉

I enjoyed this story very much.

This is book 4 in the Whitehall series.

*4.75 stars*

{265 print pages}

Genre: Historical
Tropes: Hidden identity, class differences, neither knows the other feels the same
Setting: Victorian England
Writing style: Dual POV, 3rd person, past tense
Tone: Insecure, light angst
Character- or plot-driven: Both

Romance: Yes
Clean level:
• 1 instance of knuckles plus wrist kiss mildly described over a few sentences, followed by a remembrance
• 1 wrist kiss as callback to the first
• 1 instance of looking at lips, thumbs pressing them before and moving to chin

Sensitive aspects:
• 2 quick references to nonsexual romantic arousal
• She notices his muscular forearms a few times, with 1 reference to ogling
• 1 instance of bloody

The writing style was just the way I like it, true to the time and full of expression. Highly engaging from start to finish. I’m eager to get my hands on the earlier series entries.

The characters are great, both protagonists and side characters, and I enjoyed their relationships and interactions — the friendship between Belinda and Dora; the love and dedication between Belinda and her aunt and uncle; how Dr. Felix has taken Alwyn under his wing and not only displays faith and trust in him, both as both a person and as a capable doctor, but also reassures him of them; Alwyn’s inability to allow the world to lose out on what Mr. Sliger will be able to offer as a doctor, merely due to issues of money that Alwyn can easily eliminate.

The different aspects of the plot worked well together, from the young lord’s determination to make a difference in people’s lives despite society’s expectations of what a nobleman should be, to the way circumstances first pull the would-be couple apart but later bring them back into proximity, giving them the chance to work toward their happily ever after.

The last chapter sets up the couple at the center of the next book, and I’m pleased and excited about the pairing choice.

In that moment, he may have loved me, but time and distance have cleared his mind.

That’s called infatuation, not love.

“You look worried, Alwyn. Are you afraid you won’t pass your examination?” “No, not at all,” Alwyn replied, then hoped his honest answer didn’t sound arrogant.

How is that arrogant? He asked you.

That is what he meant when he spoke of us spending the ‘future together’! It was not love for me that formed that phrase! [...] Imagine me as companion to Mr Alwyn’s aunt! Every time he came to visit, I’d have to sit with them and steady my hand whilst serving tea.

This is bizarre. I assume it’s meant to be insecurity, but how could her living alone with his aunt possibly be interpreted as she herself and he spending a future together?

Favorite Quotations:
• “As you may have guessed, it glanced off of the wood and sank deeply into my shoe.” “Oh! And how did your poor foot fare?” She was perched on her chair as if she were about to wrestle the appendage out from underneath the table to assess the damage for herself.
• “I’ll leave that up to you, but be sure you tell him today, as he thinks he’s off for home first thing tomorrow. And keep to mind that if you don’t abide by my terms, I’ll seek to lodge him elsewhere.” “Why’re you doin’ this for ‘im?” Training his eyes on the coin which felt very dear to him in that moment, Alwyn asked himself, Yes, why am I doing this for him? Because if I don’t, he won’t become the doctor he knows he’s meant to be.
• “Oh Belinda, mark my words — London is full of men who, meeting you, will be instantly besotted!” “Well, if they are as rash and irrational as that, then stop the carriage here, I beg you,” Lindy said archly.
• “I could set you up in a lovely place, anywhere you like — and late some evenings, I would come to visit you.” She cackled. “Imagine my ruination if the figure of a young man was seen slinking into my house at night!” “Well then, once I am licensed, I promise to blow a trumpet whilst climbing your front steps in broad daylight! What say you?”
• Steadying the hand that held her teacup, Belinda breathed, “Oh Aunt, the thought of being surrounded by any number of strangers…” Rose chuckled. “Well, I haven’t checked your closet for any elderly ladies in need of a companion, but none were hiding in mine, so it seems we must go out to find them!”
• “Ah yes! So did any old crones catch your eye?” “There was one woman who certainly caught my ear, as well as every ear around us,” she said[.]
• When Miss Hartley held the root aloft, the giraffe’s mouth was there already. Out whipped a black tongue, long and sinuous as a snake. Dora squealed, laughing as the carrot was snapped out of her hand and guided to the meaty lips that waited above. “And now it’s gone!” Belinda said as they all heard a quick crunch. “Down his lengthy gullet.” Dora asked, “Do you think it will arrive in his stomach by dinnertime?”
• “When I told you at our first meeting that I am called ‘William Alwyn’, a more complete introduction of myself would have been, ‘William Alwyn Charford Wirth’.” With a lift of his eyebrows, Felix shrugged. “If you are a notorious highwayman, your brigandry is unknown to me[.]

This was a refreshing take on Regency/Victorian romance. I don’t think I’ve read another story where a titled man actively seeks a profession. William Alwyn is fully committed to his role as a doctor’s apprentice, and I adored that about him. He’s capable, compassionate, and quietly determined to prove himself by merit rather than by name. There’s something deeply attractive about a hero who wants to earn his happiness.

Because he's titled, William has to conceal his true identity while pursuing his apprenticeship. This adds a constant undercurrent of tension. You understand why he does it—he wants to be valued for who he is, not his title—but you also know the fallout is coming. The internal wrestling: “I’ll tell her… just not yet” had me nervously turning pages.

Belinda is such a tender, steady heroine. Watching her care for her ailing mother, quietly fall for Mr. Alwyn, and then trying to steel her heart after he disappears? Props to her for deciding to go to London rather than sit around pining! Showing dignity, even when her heart is on the line.

I do think Alwyn waited too long to explain himself to Belinda, which made the angst drag on a little long for my taste, but once he knew he had to prove himself, nothing was going to stop that man! I loved so many of the side characters—Dr. Felix and his wife, Belinda's Aunt Rose, to name a few. I loved that Alwyn helped others anonymously; he didn't want or need the praise or thanks, he was happy to help because he could.

If you enjoy hidden identities, honorable heroes, quiet but resilient heroines, and emotional declarations that make you sigh…this one is worth picking up. I received a digital copy from Booksirens. All opinions in this review are my own.

This was a new author for me, but I really enjoyed this story. It was cute and sweet with just the right amount of angst woven into the love story. The premise is a hidden identity romance where William Alwyn, a doctor's apprentice, has fallen for Belinda Everson, a young lady who he believes is above his social standing. He's keeping his true identity a secret because he fears being accused of trickery when society discovers who he really is. The characters are so well done that I found it hard to put the book down because I was completely drawn into their story. Honestly, the prideful cousins were my favorite addition. They brought just the right amount of chaos and drama to keep things interesting.

Both Alwyn and Belinda are wonderful characters who match each other perfectly. Alwyn is such a noble hero who stays humble and constantly finds ways to serve others, and Belinda is much the same way. Watching them navigate their feelings while dealing with secrets and social expectations was really engaging. And let me tell you, Alwyn's grand gesture at the end will absolutely leave you smiling. I loved this sweet story and definitely plan to read more from this author. If you're looking for a charming and cute clean read with well-developed characters and a satisfying romance, this one hits all the right notes.

Thank you to the author for providing a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I have loved all the books by A. E. Walnofer that I have previously read. They are usually very emotionally deep, with characters rich in flaws and strengths, evident emotional intelligence, and have extremely well-written plotlines. I usually shed a tear or two reading Walnofer's books. I always wanted to reread them.

However, I am very torn in my evaluation of "With Pensive Admiration". It was a fun, but superficial read. The plot seemed thin against the author's other books. I can't say I would reread it again. I didn't have the emotional connection with this one. It wasn't a great historical book, but a quick romance with fun comedic moments with star-crossed lovers who kept getting sidetracked from each other by life and circumstance.

If you want to spend a few hours lost in a quirky, romantic story without a deep emotional expenditure, this one may be for you. Otherwise, try one of the author's other selections. I highly recommend those, especially "Out of The Bower", "The Whitehall Romance Collection", or my favorite, "With Face Aflame".

'With Pensive Admiration' kicks off a new series spun off from the Whitehall Romances. Even without reading the earlier books, I had no trouble following Alwyn and Belinda’s story.

At just over 200 pages, it’s a quick read, and I always appreciate an author who can deliver a meaningful story in a shorter format. While the plot isn’t as layered as a longer novel might allow, A. E. Walnofer still crafts a wholesome, engaging tale with an intriguing premise.

I especially enjoyed some of the fresh elements woven into the storyline. While everything didn’t quite come together strongly enough to make this a 5‑star read for me, it’s still an enjoyable start to the series. I’m already curious about the couple I suspect will take center stage next.

Special thanks to BookSirens for providing an advance review copy. I received this book for free and am leaving this review voluntarily. All opinions expressed are completely my own.

When I read an A. E. Walnofer novel, I expect historical precision combined with well developed characters, and With Pensive Admiration did not disappoint. Mr. Alwyn may have come far in developing his medical skills as he prepares to face his medical examines, but he is less sure in his abilities to communicate with the fairer sex. His bumbling attempts to convey to Miss Belinda Everson his desire to court her have left her more confused than reassured of the admiration she is almost certain she has seen in his eyes. Circumstances and misunderstandings create quite a complicated romance between the two. When the secret that Alwyn has been keeping is revealed, will these William and Belinda ever find their happily ever after? I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and I am willingly offering this review. If you enjoy historical romances, I highly recommend this book.

This was an enjoyable book. I thought that it was going to be really predictable. While it ended basically the way that I expected, there were a few things along the way that were unexpected. I appreciated that.

I'm always a little unsure about novellas. This kind of in the space where I'm not sure if I would classify it as a long novella or a short novel. Yet, it felt longer in a good way. I feel like novellas are almost always lacking when it comes to the plot. This book covered the story very well in such as small space. It's got misunderstandings. It's got friendships. It's got family relationships. It's got people doubting their own abilities. It's a full, well-written story.

This is a clean book. There's no swearing, sexual content, or violence. Even the kissing is very minimal. If you like clean, historical romances that can be read in a short time, this is a great option.

I got a free ARC from BookSirens, and I left a voluntary review.
