A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I was born into a family of Star Wars nuts. I have a lot of siblings (somewhere I lost count but I think there was more than could be numbered on one hand) and being one of the young padawans I was subjected to Star Wars marathons, on a regular basis. If you've read any of my books you'll see there is often a reference to said movies as a small homage to my upbringing. May the force be with you and all that jazz.

I started writing when I realized I didn't want to grow up not believing in magic, or not believing in creatures everyone else said didn't exist. That being said, I have never seen a fairy, unicorn or dragon. I had a neighbour who swore they fed the leprechauns in their garden, but I never caught the little buggers no matter how long I lay in wait. (And consequently had to help the neighbours plant new flowers to replace those I killed waiting for the leprechauns to show their faces.)

Along the way, I found my husband who is the rock that keeps me from floating away into my dreams, and we have a little boy who is the centre of our world. Living on a farm keeps us busy (as if the writing wasn't enough) and I have more than my share of stories about wrestling with cows, helping birth calves and ending up in the creek during the process, falling in the mud (we'll call it mud but we all know that on a farm, mud is rarely mud) and chasing escaped livestock in the hopes the four legged convicts don't make it to the highway.

I've taken up archery, and the goal is to move into horseback archery in time (you know, when I can hit the target on a consistent basis) and when no one is looking, I love to bake (this doesn't happen often as it's hard to keep the sweet treats in stock with two boys in the house.)

As to what's coming next for me? More stories (since those never stop inside my head, I might as well share them with all of you!) and more adventures. Pretty much, when the fancy strikes, I'll jump on it. Leap before you look I'm sure that motto was created for me.

Or was that . . . think big and dream bigger, ready, set, pull the trigger . . . yeah. That one is a good one too. But only if you have a gun. And are hunting elephants. Which is not cool because of so many reasons. Let's stick with the first one with an addendum.

Leap before you look and let your dreams carry you on their wings. And that, my friends, is me in a nutshell.

Amnesia is one of my favourite trope, add in to it a kickass and powerful heroine, top tier found family, dangerous dystopian world and an enigmatic and broody hero- you have a winner!

I was hooked from page 1 and I enjoy it a lot.
Mallory was such a cool heroine. She had kindness and empathy but is also dangerous and powerful. I loved her resilience.
Even after finishing book 1, Veyyer is still a mystery. He’s cunning but grumpy and so very mysterious. Some of his actions raised my BP but then he will turn around and will do something thoughtful and protect Mallory. I can’t wait to see where the story goes especially with the surprise introduction of Zane.
I especially loved the animals companions in this book. It also had a dash of greek mythology which was incorporated well. Loved Stheno. Harrison, Rana, Lucky, sorrow, Thren and Laz were also amazing.

It also had some quests and challenges which made the book more interesting. That ending was unexpected and left so many questions unanswered. Can’t wait to read book 2.

-Post apocalyptic Urban Romance.
-Amnesia.
-Found Family & animal companions.
-Power couple that hate each other.
-Reluctant chosen one.
-KU, TW and recommended.

"Riftborn" by Shannon Mayer is a total knockout! From the very first page, I was hooked by the mysterious main character who wakes up with amnesia in a shattered world. Her skills are off the charts, and the action is non-stop as she battles monsters and tries to piece together her past.

The relationship between her and Veyyr is so intense! The author does an amazing job of building the tension and making you want to scream at Veyyr to just tell her the truth already! The world-building is fantastic, too – you can really picture this broken land and feel the desperation of the people living there.

What really sets this book apart is the main character's internal struggle. She's not just fighting external enemies; she's battling her own lost memories and trying to figure out who she really is. If you're looking for a thrilling, action-packed fantasy with a strong female lead and a touch of romance, "Riftborn" is a must-read!

Such a fast paced and fun story with tons of character. I especially loved the brilliantly written lore, character development, and plot. I had such a fun time reading Mallory's story. I usually don't like amnesia but this one is well done, as it starts with amnesia and she works to unravel the reasons for it and who she is. I loved the extra characters and it felt playful and light while being a serious plot. There was a good amount of yearning and tension but I didn't believe the love interest pieces. I never got the depth from MMC. It felt like it was lacking something. But despite that, overall it was just a lot of fun to read. The twists and unknown kept me in the story.

Since it's an arc I'm not sure the level of editing to follow, but it did have distracting errors that made it difficult to read.

From the first pages of Riftborn, readers will be thrust into an action packed, post-apocalyptic story that will grip you. Riftborn is the newest release from Shannon Mayer and introduces us to Mallory, a strong FMC without a memory. Mallory finds allies on her journey and gets the feeling that one of them, Veyyr, might know more about her than he is letting on.

This story was incredibly action-packed. I felt like there was never a dull moment and the world-building really drew me in. From magic systems through to a slew of ancient mythological beasties and some new ones, this book has it all. For the first book in a series, it sets up the story well and has left me wanting more….I am highly anticipating the second book.

While Mallory does have amnesia, I loved that the story didn’t quickly resolve her lost past. There is still a lot to learn about Mallory as the series progresses. Shannon Mayer writes the best found family stories and this one was on point. I enjoyed Mallory’s interactions with Harrison, Rana and Lucky. It brought a lot of comfort in such a treacherous world.

Thank you to Shannon Mayer for gifting me with an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

Hello, people!
First of all, let me mention that this book is the first book in the Of Sorrows and Blades series.
The books that remain engraved in my heart are those that have a lot of tension and suspense and those that are read breathlessly, because they captivate me with the torrential words of each author and the strong plot. Here, then, we have a combination of these.
The dystopian environment and the post apocalyptic world full of fantasy creatures are super wow.
Readers walk and walk along with the main heroine, Mallory, in order to learn along with this story, her past.
The author's writing is stormy, cinematic, shocking, captivating and so, so subversive.
I hope the sequel comes out soon because I can't wait for the second part of the series. If you're looking for something fast-paced, heart-pounding, and adrenaline-pumping, then this book is for you!

Many thanks to the author and Crowns and Chaos PR for the eARC!

This is my honest review!

I loved this book! If I could give it more stars I would. I absolutely demolished it as I couldn’t put it down.
I didn’t know I was missing this world until I was back into it. Really don’t want to give anything away, but if you love Shannon’s characters you won’t be disappointed.

Storytime... I've been feral for this book since reading the first chapter in Shannon's newsletter several months ago. She sent subscribers a total of 11 unedited chapters, one every week or so, and I'm not ashamed to say that I gobbled it up and pleaded for more. (I guess I'm ungrateful that way, but Shannon, as well as her amazing PA, Erica, should know by now how greedy I am for anything she writes.)

Riftborn is the perfect post-apocalyptic, urban fantasy! Full of action and rich world building, it captivated me from the very start.

After pulling herself from a large rift in the earth, Mallory finds herself in a desolate place with no memory of her past. Determined to discover who she is, she pushes forward, not letting anyone or beast best her. Despite the negative things she hears about herself, she refuses to give up. With rough edges and a tough exterior, she portrays strength and independence to those around her. However, that toughness hides a softness for those she’s come to care about, along with a need to protect them, something that has come to the forefront and would surprise many who knew her before.

Veyyr is broody, frustrating, and at times unlikable. He’s also fiercely loyal, protective of those he cares for, and will stop at nothing to fulfill his quest, which Mallory has become an integral part of. He’s such an interesting mix of conflicting personality traits that you’ll find yourself wanting to dig into the heart of him, only to discover that he’s a complicated puzzle, wrapped in a conundrum, all tied up with a paradox. (Close your eyes and imagine that.) I find myself intrigued and frustrated by him. He’s a multifaceted character that you will distrust, hate, swoon over, and love.

Riftborn follows Mallory and Veyyr's journey through a desolate post-apocalyptic world fraught with danger, and to survive, they must learn to trust each other; otherwise, their lives are forfeit.

I ate these two up! At times, they're so different, I questioned how they would work, then I'd glimpse how perfectly they fit together, like two sides of the same coin.

The last quarter of the book kept me on the edge of my seat, gasping, praying, and so full of questions. It flipped everything upside down, leaving me conflicted, anxious, and questioning everything. Before posting this review, I reread all my notes and highlights, including thoroughly searching keywords, because I was determined to find clues to things I missed and hoping to find possible foreshadowing of what was to come.

I. Am. Unwell.

Shannon Mayer hit a grand slam with this one, and it's going to feel like a living beast is raging through my brain until the next one releases.

Now, I must find a therapist to help me with my trauma, a clairvoyant to tell me how this series ends, and a book full of banter, rainbows, sunshine, and a happily ever after to make me laugh and smile, not necessarily in that order.

Favorite Lines & Quotes:

"Hope is like that weed, it’s not always pretty, but it doesn’t give up, no matter the odds.”

“Listen, lady. You can promise to ride the fuck out of him, and give him children and a crown, until you’re hoarse, but I’m who he’s fighting to get to. I’m the one he knows will stand beside him while the world burns around us. I’m the one he can give his back to and know I’ll keep it safe.”

“It is something else I think, something more binding than your magic, or my scars on your body. Something that has been building since before I can remember. I will not deny I don’t understand it either. But it is mine, and whatever it is, it is ours.”

This book, Wow. I loved it. I read it in one night. Yes I stayed up until three-ish in the morning to finish it and yes, I paid for that the next day, but it was so worth it.
The world building is fantastic! The character development is incredible and you get to watch these characters grow and evolve as the story progresses. I love books where the characters grow and change, I dislike a main character that never grows or changes.
This book is a Post Apocalyptic Urban Fantasy. The book opens on an action scene and the action just keeps going. I hate spoilers so I do not want to tell you much more about the book.
The main protagonist is a strong woman but one that has forgotten her past. She doesn't know why she can fight or where she learned the things she knows.
Veyyr is the man that can give her the answers she needs. He is strong, full of powerful magic, he isn't very friendly and wants nothing to do with our female protagonist. Unfortunately for him he knows about her past and she wants answers.
The world isn't safe and the creatures in it are often deadly to humans. The humor in this book made me laugh, I love a good sassy and snarky main character. This one will have you on the edge of your seat, and it has all of the feels.
The only problem I had was finishing it so late and not being able to talk about it with anyone.
If you love a book full of action, danger, new creatures and maybe some normal creatures and if you have read some other books from this author you might be in for a few surprises.
You really need to grab this one.

Shannon Mayer has done it again! I don’t usually go for urban fantasy but I loved Neverthorn and had to give this book a chance. I’m so glad I read it! I absolutely loved this book! I’m currently on a cruise while writing this review, and I may or may not have gotten a little sunburned because I was far too absorbed in reading to notice. I just had to know how it would end… only to be left sighing at that cliffhanger!
The world the author created after such devastation feels vivid and immersive. Every detail adds depth, and the creatures she brings to life are both fascinating and unforgettable. But my absolute favorites were the animal companions, especially Sorrow, who completely stole my heart.
The relationships throughout the story feel authentic and heartfelt, offering a beautiful representation of found family. The attraction between Mallory and Veyyr is definitely there, but what I loved most is that romance doesn’t define the book. Instead, we get action, magic, emotional depth, and a story that truly grabs hold of your attention and refuses to let go.
I highly recommend this book, especially if you’ve been hesitant about diving into urban fantasy.

UMMM SHANNNNON!!!!! This book is phenomenal and #IYKYK had me kicking my feet and flipping pages so fast. I ate the plot and the characters up and didn’t want it to end. It’s days like today that make me glad that Shannon is a powerhouse of an author and I know we won’t have to wait years for a sequel, because I neeeeeeeeed the next book!!!

If you love books with a post-apocalyptic magical dystopian vibe, tension and slow burn romance, a magic system filled with creatures that are so unique and frightening… this book is PERFECT for you. Mallory is a baddie and I freaking LOVED her, I want Lucky to be my new bestie, and Sorrow is the sidekick we all need!

Love love LOVED this book so much!!

One word – YYEEESSS! This is such a great read and I need MORE! This is so much fun to read and devoured it within 24 hours. I loved getting sucked in to this post-apocalyptic world where monsters roam and magic seems normal. I love the characters and how each and every one of them brings something extra to the story. The humor is amazing and the banter had me grinning. Mallory is feisty and determined, Sorrow is the sidekick I never knew I needed, Lucky I want as my own best friend, and Veyyer still seems to be a mystery I need to know more about. Not to mention I NEED every one of Lucky’s shirts made so I can buy them all. This is fast paced with a lot of action and so many easter eggs throughout. I’m still questioning some and thinking about them days later! I can’t for book 2.

If you love urban fantasy, post-apocalyptic, found family, reluctant chosen, one, and steamy slow burn then this is for you and I highly recommend it.

Oh my heart.... A story of lost memories, finding your way in a new, sometimes terrifying world. Mallory, as she comes to find is her name based on dogtags she is wearing, climbs out of a hole/rift in the ground fighting wolf like monsters. She is now on a journey to find out who she is, how she has memories of things she does not know, while helping a "stranger," Vyyer, on his quest. This Vyyer, knows her from her previous life, yet the spell on her prevents her from hearing anything about this past, even if he would tell her.
This is an amazing journey in a new, well laid out world that is perfect on its own. And ends in quite the cliffhanger!
If you are a longtime Shannon fan and have read her previous series, this book is going to hit a whole lot harder. I cried where someone of no knowledge of the other series would. A must read for anyone who love post apocalyptic stories with paranormal thrown in to round it all out!

Riftborn is a new post apocalyptic urban fantasy that is coming in HOT! The book gets you at the jump, bringing you in and getting you invested completely right away. Mallroy, our main female character, wakes up in the Rift, seams of Earth that can open overnight and house all kinds of nasty creatures. She is unaware of who she is and her memory comes only in tantalizing spurts throughout the book. Who is she? What happened to her? How does she fit in this post apocalyptic world? Then add in mysterious, powerful and snarky Veyyr, and you get not only pretty great banter, but a ton of romantic angst and edge of your seat adventure. I loved this new series and all I can say is as you continue to read, the surprises and easter eggs surround you! If you love Shannon's other books, you are going to LOVE Riftborn! It is FIRE and I cannot wait for the next book in this series!

I liked the irreverent nature of the FMC Mallory, and how she led with her heart and really cares about the people around her. She is even compassionate to the Gorgons, which I loved!

I love the found family aspect, and the animal companions. Such heartwarming tropes that I just love!

We’ve got quite the slow burn between Mallory and Veyyer! The push and pull between them throughout their adventures was great, and I was just waiting to find out more about who they might’ve been to one another, and for them to give in to each other.

While I did enjoy the sassy and humorous vibes, at times some of the dialogue, thoughts, etc. were a bit too colloquial for me. But I did still like the way the plot was unfolding and I wanted to keep reading.

3.5 stars rounded up!

Thank you to Crowns & Chaos PR and Shannon Mayer for the e-arc!

Loved:
Post-apocalyptic world with many types of magic and magical creatures
A badass and painfully compassionate FMC
A journey of self-discovery frequently interrupted by life-threatening challenges
An entire cast of amazing side characters, especially Lucky and his tshirts (IYKYK).
True enemies-to-lovers
A raven-like familiar
Help for the FMC from the unlikeliest of places

Notes:
I was hesitant at first because I don't usually love when a plot centers around memory loss of the main character but Shannon absolutely nailed it.
The tension between the MCs is insane but he warned it is not yearning as you might be used to.

Thank you to the author and Crowns and Chaos PR for the eARC.

This book was everything I knew it would be and something I didn’t see coming.

Mallory is a bada$$, whether she remembers or not. She knows how to fight and how to survive. Her muscle memory is intact even if her actual memory is not. On a journey to find out who she is, she meets a group of people that become her “found family”.

If you are a Mayer fan and have read her other series, get ready for some kick in the gut emotions. When bits and pieces of Mallory’s past come through, you are going to need some tissues.

The ending of this book is going to make you scream, and probably throw your book/device. I definitely was not expecting that and really hope all is not as it seems. I’ll need book 2 sooner rather than later Ms. Mayer…

I voluntarily reviewed the book.

What a start to a series! While I’m not always a huge amnesia plot line fan, the way Shannon has done it in Riftborn is interesting and well written. I really enjoyed Mallory and getting to know about her past at the same time as she learns about it herself. Shannon always writes strong female leads and Mallory is no different. She’s tough and badass. I loved the side characters as well - Lucky is a hoot and Sorrow is a fun familiar. I didn’t feel quite as attached to our lead man, though. I feel as if his depth was a little lackluster. That said, there was some spice towards the end after a slow burn buildup! The book is fast paced, full of magic and mayhem, and filled with lots of banter. We’ll see where it takes us in book 2!

Must read! Gahhhhh

For long term fans of Shannon, this will be amazing and devastating. For new fans, strap in, grab on tight, and then dive head first because this is a wild ride!
A post apocalyptic world, some mythical creatures, a main character with no idea who she is, found family, and a mystery that deepens. I loved the storyline, the characters, the setting, the pace... I dont think there's anything I didn't enjoy except hitting the end. I need more and cannot wait to get Soulrift in my hands. I was turning pages much too quickly, devouring every word, so the end came up long before I was ready.
I need more Sorrow and Lucky, more Rana and Harrison - Lucky especially had me laughing. These character will not easily let you go!

Wait, who am I again?

There’s something about finding out what happens to some of your favorite characters that just sits right. Mallory wakes up with no shoes and no memory in a world that is not meant for softness. She’s trying to figure out who she is while keeping herself safe.

She’s struggling enough to begin with and then enter the human embodiment of trouble to make things even more chaotic. Shannon Mayer never disappoints in her storytelling and this book was no different.

I’m looking forward to not only finding out what happens to these characters but also getting to know them and their backstories a bit more! Bring on the next book!

Wow, this book is action-packed and hard to put down! The characters and world building are awesome and the story is addictive. Imagine waking up, with the world broken, your memory gone, and only muscle memory pretty much intact. Mallory wants to focus on protecting others, so the first order of business is to find weapons! Thank goodness, she remembers how to use weapons and battle! This book is action-packed, with danger, magic, monsters, dragons, Rifts, Sorrow, Shadowsteel, traitors, Tracker, a curse, witches, a quest, Sylphs, Gorgons, new friends, attraction, betrayal, wit, and battles!

I am so excited to be back in this world! For old fans of Shannon Mayer this is such an incredible gift. Even if you have never read any of the previous series connected to this you will be drawn in to Mallory’s story from page one. As Mallory wakes with no memory she fights to find her way and herself in a harsh and unforgiving “new” world. When she runs into a dark stranger thats somehow seems familiar Mallory knows she has to follow him to find out what he knows about her past. An action packed page turner that will have Mayer fans going oh oh oh, and will make new fans want to read all the previous series! Masterful, and can’t wait for more!!

First in this series and what a doozy. I have been really into post apocalyptic stories recently and this is the best one I have come across to date. Love the family found aspect and the storyline really captures my imagination. Mallory has lost her memory and rebuilds herself along the path she is currently on. It is full of twists and turns as well as full of action. It is also one that is family found and really pulls at your heart strings. I can’t wait for the next book to come out to find out what will happen next. Loving all the characters and the world building that is happening. I want more.

This one had a strong world building dynamic when we talk about the MCs. This was the first time I read this type of book so I wasn’t sure about the genre of an urban fantasy in the sense that it was a post apocalyptic fantasy. It was interesting in that the FMC had amnesia and had lost her memories and this worked well when interacting with the MMC. Veyyr (MMC) was compelling. This was also a slow burn romance and it worked for me.
While I enjoyed the structure, it didn’t emotionally hook me. I was intrigued but not fully invested in the book. Overall, the book was a good start of the series for people who enjoy a post apocalyptic urban fantasy with mystery and story world building.

wow!

What an amazing start to a new series!
It took a minute before a few things started slotting into place when characters from a previous series started showing up, then when things did connect in my little old brain I was like, whaaaat?! Brilliant!
Ugh, so much I want to say, but I’d be spoilering left right and centre 😆 so I’m just going to say this is fabulous and I’m sooo looking forward to the next book and the rest of this series. In the meantime I’ll be going in for a reread of the origins series to re-familiarise myself with stuff cos it’s been a while.
Oo this is going to be goooood!💖 Thank you Shannon😁🙏🏽

In this urban post-apocalyptic world there is magic, monsters, vampires, and more. The FMC, Mallory, wakes up not knowing who or what she is but instinctively knows how to fight.

The side characters are great. Lucky a funny, loveable ogre and Sorrow a loyal, talking bird to name a couple of my favorites.

The plot twist at the end came out of no where. I didn't see it coming. Can't wait for the next book in the Of Sorrows and Blades series.

This was so fun to read. What is an amnesia FMC supposed to do when she crawls out of a rift with demon monsters chasing her? Protect those around her, kick some butt and try to find answers.

This book started out with a bang, and kept me enthralled for the whole book. Slow burn with the stranger who seems to know her, but won't give her any answers. I'm also loving the found family and Sorrow her feathered companion. This does leave me hanging off a cliff! Shannon, I need the next book ASAP!!!

I am obsessed with this book!

Wow! 11 years ago I read a series by this author that I absolutely loved and this book had echos from that realm!!!! I was so excited to realized that this book had the same magic that the first series had for me! Mallory is the heroine that has me reading as fast as I can to see what happens next. She’s a powerhouse with skills that she doesn’t even know she has since she has no memories of her past. She is POWERFULL but she fights for others even if it puts herself at risk. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!!!!
