Before Rose enters the tournament that will change her fate, she’s fighting a different kind of battle – one she can’t afford to lose.
Cast into the slums after Prince Kyor’s lie shattered her family, Rose is barely surviving. With her parents gone and her younger sister facing a future as bleak as the frostbitten alleyways around them, Rose will do anything to protect what little she has left.
So when a ruthless underworld queen offers Kay a respectable job in exchange for a single favour, Rose takes the deal. The task? Steal a deadly plant from the Goddess’s own temple garden – a theft punishable by death.
The heist forces her into the heart of Wrohelm’s sacred rings, where priestesses tread softly, wolves sniff out lies, and the Goddess of Life watches from every shadow.
And when the night twists into bloodshed, Rose discovers that even the smallest choice can stain her hands forever.
OMG, this is very promising!! Looking forward to continuing to read this series. I love Rose for now, and I can't wait to see what is happening with her in this incredible, entertaining world
4.5 stars. Very rare that id rate a novella 4+ stars but this was so good. Pace was perfect, love all the characters that I met and I’m super interested to see what happens in book 1. Jumping straight into Web of Vows and Vengeance!
Quick read. I wish i would have gotten this before reading book 1. I think it would have been more invigorating. It did give some more incite on a few world details BUT i would not call this a must read for the series to make sense.
The perfect prequel and start to a brilliant new series! This prequel will whet your palate, your taste buds, and you'll be salivating for more! Right off the bat, the FMC, Rose, settles soundly into my heart. The storytelling skills of Aria Ashbrook, is guaranteed to blow your mind! You'll feel the desolation, you'll absorb the desperation, you'll be riveted and enthralled throughout.
This read introduces us to Rose and her sister Kay, living in the slums, in the most appalling of conditions. It wasn't always that way for them, they used to live in the High Hold, held in high esteem, until, they, and their entire family is stripped of their status, their magic, their life and ousted to the slums. All because of a lie....The bleakness of this world is so stark, I swear I can feel the cold permeating through the pages. That is how well written this is, you FEEL it in your bones.
I love Rose, hell, I could feel her desperation to do something, anything to help Kay. She has to be the best sister on the planet, nothing is off bounds to make life easier for her sister, even associating herself with very shady characters, even theft, if that means Kay has a better future. Oh my heck did this read have me clenching my fists, my teeth, my innards at what Rose agrees to do. But.... sometimes one does the wrong thing for the right reason and this reason was rightly wrong. The authors set it up that even I would have done the same. Bargains are fickle in the slums and she ends up doing way more than a simple (well, not so simple!) theft. Although Rula, the person Rose bargains with, dupes her, I honestly liked her character. Unapologetically hard but with a sliver of compassion, she surprised me. There were a few really great stand out characters, some shrouded in mystery, some not as they appear at face value, but all super enticing. Where do I start with them? Rose? I've already established that she's stolen my heart. Kay? Her naivity is endearingly and sweet, she exudes positivity. Reuben? Well shoot, I absolutely adored him! What's not to love? He's gentle, kind, considerate, and utterly in love with Rose, although he'd never tell her so, he keeps it well hidden from her, their relationship was supposed to only be 'friends with benefits'. Great benefits too, not only helping Rose, ummm...set her hormones right, his magic, though not powerful, has the ability to warm anyone he hugs. Literally. We even get a really yucky character, Tells, who I would gladly have ended myself, a pompous self serving, full of importance so and so, with nefarious thoughts aimed at Rose and Kay. A few breath stopping moments ensured, which the authors twisted superbly. And sets it all up beautifully to get real insight into Rose, what motivates her, and the stage for the Retterheld, a deadly trial to gain the favour of the goddess, is perfectly presented for Rose to chew on.
Golly, so much is going on in this read, fast paced, emotional, heart stopping, bleak, dark but with a glimmer of light and a heap of hope, I was like someone watching a tennis match, my eyes flitting from left to right across all the pages. I cannot express how magnificent this read is, how incredibly real the characters are, how immensely riveting a read it is. My thoughts are still churning from this fast paced and emotional read. A superb debut from very talented authors, which promises to be a spectacular series!
Veil of Web and Ruin to prequel do serii Hirathean Path, który w oryginale można zdobyć tylko zapisując się do newslettera autorki. Czy jest niezbędny aby zrozumieć fabułę z pierwszej części Web of Vows and Vengeance?
CD RECENZJI: Pewnego dnia Rose dostaje zlecenie wykradniecia silnie trującej rośliny z ogrodów jednej z bogini i musi stawić czoła konsekwencjom jakie przyniesie jej ta wyprawa. Peeps!
i wiele innych o których opowiem Wam w recenzji 1 tomu Web of Vows and Vengeance
As a prequel novella, Veil of Web and Ruin by Aria Ashbrook really delivers on what it sets out to do. It’s not a full-length story, and it doesn’t try to be, instead, it focuses on giving a sharp, emotional introduction to the world and its characters, and it does that incredibly well.
Rose’s backstory is easily the strongest part. Everything she’s gone through feels intense and personal, and for a novella, it builds her character quickly without feeling rushed. Her resilience and determination to protect what little she has left made it easy to connect with her almost immediately.
Because it is a novella, some aspects aren’t as fully explored as they could be, and certain plot points feel more like setup than payoff. But that’s very much the point, it’s laying the groundwork for the series rather than trying to resolve everything.
Overall, this is a strong and engaging introduction that leaves you wanting more. As a novella, it succeeds in hooking your interest, building emotional stakes, and setting up a story that feels worth continuing.
What lengths would you go to protect the only family you have left?! What lines would you cross, when you have nothing left to loose?! Rose has had it worse then most, her family accused of a death they didn't cause, all family members stripped of their healer powers, her young brother "taken", a mother and father dead, and she's left to survive and protect her sister alone. I do love the slight on a priestess with the hypocrisy that comes to light, it really makes her stop and think. I truly understand how Rose also sees how she suffers in a different way, since she was towards the top before and knows what life can be like, while most have only known the "slums". It is the best backstory setup and introduction to the characters. This Prequel is perfect for its purpose, I'm on the edge of my seat salivating for the next book of the series!
This prequel novella is only available through Aria Ashbrook’s email newsletter, and honestly it was such a fun quick read. The story flowed easily and pulled me right in from the start. Rose is fiercely devoted to her sister Kay and willing to do absolutely anything for her… even help facilitate a murder. 👀 I really enjoyed the darker underworld elements and the ruthless queen who seems to have Rose completely under her thumb. I kept going back and forth trying to figure out if she genuinely cared for Rose or was simply using her for her own gain. I also loved the slow build of the friends-to-lovers dynamic forming with Ruben. Their chemistry already has me invested, and now I’m even more excited to start book one. If this novella is any indication of what’s coming next, I’m ready for the chaos, secrets, and morally gray characters. 🖤
For my first ever e-book that I have ever read, this one particular romantasy had my hooked to the point I have a new favourite genre.
Considering I had the opportunity to read this prequel for free, I have to admit the writing was a lot better than I had expected, and knowing that I have finished on a cliff hanger frustrates me.
Knowing that I have finished this prequel, I will be buying the rest of the series because it just feels illegal to finish it, especially when I need to know who killed Tella, how Kay’s new job goes, and if Rose and Ruben ever get together which really hope they do at some point in this series.
I highly recommend this prequel because without this one, I would still be in my reading slump and be unaware of my new love for romantasy.
I loved this prequel to this new series. It was a quick read, full of action and emotion and I loved the main character, Rose. She was determined and feisty, loyal to her sister for whom she would do anything, even stealing from the Goddess's garden.
Living in the slums is hard, even harder for Rose and her sister Kay when they were once something more, having been stripped of their magic, money and status by the king and forced to leave the only home they had known. Rose has to do what she can, making potions in exchange for some meager coin and what little food they can afford to buy. At least she has Ruben to keep her warm occasionally!
This one holds lots of promise for the series and I can't wait to read the first full book in it next.
This is a tinny whinny novella in the world of The Hirathean Path série. This follow Rose's adventure to get Kay a proper job in the slums. 💪🏻
I normally get disappointed with novellas because the story is often quite simple and doesn't actually add anything to the main story. In this case I thought that the novella, if read before the first book, really sets the tone and Rose's reality before the first book starts. 😊
I like the little story and it is important for us to understand some interactions between characters. It is not a need to read, but will improve the overall experience.
A dark and gripping prequel that pulls you straight into a harsh, unforgiving world 🌑 Veil of Web and Ruin shines in its atmosphere—every page feels heavy with tension, from frostbitten slums to the eerie beauty of the Goddess’s temple 🌿✨ Rose is a compelling heroine, driven by loyalty and desperation, and her choices carry real weight 💔⚔️ The story is fast-paced and immersive, though I wished for a little more depth in some relationships and world details. Still, it delivers an emotional punch and sets up bigger things to come 🔥 A strong 4⭐ read—perfect for fans of morally complex heroines and dark fantasy with high stakes 🖤
I’ve read this prequel after reading the first book in the series.
But I loved looking back on Rose’s life and the things that happened before the first book.
Rose is still one of my favorite FMC’s. The way she does everything she can for the people she cares about, she’ll put herself in danger if that means that her loved once gain something from it.
She is such a strong powerful woman and I love that about her. The story was written so amazingly and lines you up perfectly for the first book in the series.
This is a 100 page prequel novella for Web of Vows and Vengeance. This book gives us some background information for the FMC Rose and her sister Kay and how they are living after the death of their family.
Rose is given a job to do, in exchange for a single favour to better her sister’s life. This job is to steal a a deadly plant from the goddess’s temple garden.
I think this has set up for the next book perfectly and can’t wait to dive into that next.
Veil of Web & Ruin is the perfect little prequel that gives us a deeper look into Rose before everything changed—before the Retterheld, before the chaos, before the choices that shaped her.
I absolutely loved how this story expanded on her dynamic with Ruben. Their situationship has so much tension and complexity, and getting more insight into their past made everything feel even more layered and emotional.
It’s a quick read, but it adds so much depth to the world and characters. I flew through it and enjoyed every second—definitely a must-read if you loved Web of Vows & Vengeance!
4⭐️ Before the tournament Before the vows Before vengeance
I’m so glad I read the prequel in advance of Vows of Blood & Deception. I knew I gravitated to Rose’s character in book 1 Web of Vows & Vengeance but I love her even more having read this prequel. The lengths she’s willing to go to keep her sister’s innocence is painfully beautiful.
This prequel dives into life in the slums for Rose & Kay after one lie turns their whole world upside down. It’s a story about grit and survival. I would honestly feel incomplete if I had not read this.
Solid 4.5 stars rounded up. This was a fantastic Novella! It wasn’t very long, but the pacing was perfect, and it never felt like anything was missing. The storyline was solid, fast paced and intriguing. I really loved the deeper dive into Rose and Kay this novella provides. It gives us a much better understanding of why Rose is the way she is and why she’s so hell bent on winning the Retterheld. If you enjoyed Web of Vows and Vengeance, definitely read this novella. It worth your time for sure.
This book was really short and gave some context into the "slum" life that Rose and Kay lived in prior to the retterheld. Although i was hoping for some more context about what all happened with her mom, the story of how her and Jonah met, or even the stripping itself. Not a whole lot of extra knowledge, and honestly not sure its really needed for the plot of book 1. Either way, glad i read it.
Thank you to the Authors for gifting this to the ARC team as a little bonus for book #1.
I absolutely adored getting a little from Rose’s life before the Retterheld, I think it’s shows the desperation of what led to her entering. And you know who I want more of??? - RULA!!!!! That is a formidable woman and I have a feeling there is so much more to come - or I hope so! I can’t believe how much information Aria was able to pack into this novella, and I have questions!
I would probably recommend reading this before book 1 as I think it gives a fantastic insight into the lead up to events!!
This was a whirlwind Novella and I’m glad I discovered it before diving into Web of Vows and Vengeance. This Novella sets the stage for what I believe is going to be an astonishing new series for me! It gives us some character buildup and background into Rose and her life after being stripped of magic and forced to make do in the slums of the outer circle. I’m fully invested after just 100 pages and taking the deep dive into book 1 immediately!
Yes. The FMC is living a rough life compared to the beautiful one she once had. A single lie is what tore it to shreds. She does all she can to protect her sister. She's given the chance to do just that, and that's where her journey begins. There's a few side characters, one you'll love, one you'll hate, and one you just deal with because you know you have to. Quick short read and I define recommend.
A very intriguing and promising start. Rose has lost everything and is trying to protect her sister, but it doesn't go the way she hopes and after stealing hemlock and being involved in the death of a powerful if nasty man, and the death of a man called Tella who tried to get it on with her, she wonders what fate has in mind for her.
This is the Pre-quel story to Web of Vows and Vengeance.
Great background and character build leading into the events of WOVAV, gives you more insight into how Rose and her sister were living in the slums before Rose enters the Retterheld Definitely reccomend to read before Web of vow and vengeance
For a novella this was actually really good I was shocked at parts I wish it kept going just bc I think the ending needed more but that’s the point of a novella. It did remind me a bit of the beginning of quicksilver with the stealing and protecting a younger sibling. I read it in one sitting I will most likely continue with this series!!
Rose is deemed an outcast from her mother's attempt to save the Queen, when Rose and Kay are left alone on the streets in the slums. Rose will do whatever it takes to ensure Kay has as good of a life as she can. Losing her magic, hair stripped of color, Rose must do the impossible. Cannot wait to start the next book!
Omg what a prequel! I caught myself thinking about this story days afterward, i was sad when it ended and immediately downloaded book one of this series. I am so intrigued by the magic system and the world building was brilliant. I think I have found a new favourite author! Full review on my instagram melandbeccas_books
