She witnessed an execution sanctioned by the state. Now her only shield is a man the state has branded a traitor.
Forensic accountant Eva Morales has a gift for finding patterns in numbers. But when she uncovers a “Ghost Load” on the northern border, she stumbles into a secret worth killing for. After witnessing a cold-blooded execution by a high-ranking official, Eva plunges into a sub-zero wilderness with nothing but the clothes on her back and a target on her name.
Caleb North is the lead handler for the elite North Star K-9 Unit. A man of silence and stone, he’s haunted by a failure he can’t outrun and bonded to a Belgian Malinois who trusts no one. So when Bane breaks every rule of his training to protect the half-frozen woman Cal pulls from a ravine, Cal knows two she’s telling the truth, and his own agency wants her dead.
Trapped in a remote outpost as the blizzard of the century closes in, Cal and Eva are forced into an intimacy neither of them wanted. He’s built walls no one has breached in years. She’s learned that trusting authority is a death sentence. But as the Pipeline’s shadow network tightens its grip and the heat between them becomes more dangerous than the frostbite at the door, Cal faces an impossible follow orders, or follow his heart.
In a world where every track leads to a trap, trust is the ultimate gamble. And the heart is the only compass left.
A pulse-pounding clean romantic suspense where where loyalty, duty, and redemption collide in a frozen wilderness — and the only thing more dangerous than the hunt is the truth.
I have a new favorite author. Tracks is a fast paced, exciting, adventurous, story that kept me turning pages. Discovering the layers that make up Cal and Eva enhanced the story. Everyone who reads this is going to want a superhero canine like Bane. Excited for book 2.
I really enjoyed the pacing of this book. The best part is that it was written using short sentences with a rhythmic pacing. This completely complemented the tactical and calculated style of the story. It made the story keep at a steady and quick pace. This added to the impact of the story and was a really great move by the author.
I love Bane. I'm all about the dogs in books and this dog's pack mentality with the two human characters added so much to the emotion of the story and broke up the constant action in the most wonderful way.
The only part that was hard for me is that the dog does get injured. It is realistic but as a Shepherd owner (Note: Bane is a Malinois) this broke my heart just a little. The little moments where Bane is such a beautiful soul balanced this out very nicely and I was able to put that aside as the story moved forward.
This is an exciting and quick read that you will want to keep reading in one sitting. I am very much looking forward to the next book!
Tracks is an action packed edge of your seat read that you will not put down until the last page. This author's worldbuilding is amazing as it forces the reader into a world of snow, trees, and dangers. The storyline is enticing and intense as it leads to lies, threats, mistrust and espionage and suspense that is neverending. The character development will lead you into 2 people whom the system has failed one of them Eva has known that from the beginning but Cal has just begun to mistrust the system he works for. This couple have to learn to trust each other the way Bane trusts them. Hard hitting suspense, mystery, mistrust, and finding their true North and a happy ending is all up in the air until the last page. I laughed, cried, and believed these characters from the beginning. Cannot wait to read the next book. This author kept this book real with the pacing, the flow of the story and the characters. Well done!
Caleb North and his K-9 Belgian Malinois, Bane, are on the team to find DHS accountant Eva Morales, so they can bring her in to testify. The problem is that parts of the department and Caleb's colleagues are trying to stop her from telling the truth. The other issue is that they are stuck in a blizzard and might be completely on their own. The book had plenty of action, as they were on the run for most of it. There isn't much dialogue, but I loved K-9 Bane. Unlike a lot of books, the dog in this book is a real character and a strong member of their team. I found this author and series through a Facebook group and have enjoyed starting the North Star K-9 series by receiving the ARCs from her.
This story starts with a bang and never lets up until the end. Reading this book was an edge of my seat, nail biting experience. This is my first book by this author and wow! What a plot! Loved Eva and Cal with Bane the dog being a significant character in the story. The bad guys get what’s coming to them and there is a lovely happy ever after.
Intriguing story of a federal agent who finds a woman on the run (from his agency) who he is supposed to detain. His K-9 decides differently and the hunt for both of them starts there. Hypothermia, exhaustion and hunger plague their escape and then they decide to fight back. Some continuity problems but still enjoyable.
Eva and Cal’s story with Bane mixed in was a great book. It has action and suspense and a happy ending. Can’t wait for the next book. I received an advance reader copy for free, and I am leaving this honest review voluntarily.
