Fooled Me: Shame Duet

Rate this book
We met as kids when my family moved in next door to theirs, back then they were just annoying boys who had cooties. Through time we became the best of friends, doing everything together. Then high school happened, they left me behind when their parents transferred them to a private school, leaving me to face my bullies alone.

I was dreading my senior year; knowing it was just going to be the same horrid treatment as the years before but then Josh happened and my senior was nothing like what I expected. My life had become exciting and terrifying; through it all Nolan and Kyle stayed by my side supporting me as my best friends when I wanted so much more.

I loved them, what we had was special. Then they ruined it and I needed protection from them.

This is a dark slow burn why choose where the MFC won't have to choose.

Shell is a shy FMC that has spent the majority of her school years being bullied, Nolan and Kyle are her next door neighbors and her best friends, until they’re not because Josh a boy at school and Lisa her main bully through school has a plan to break her. This book hits on party drugged, bullying, rape situation and friend betrayal.

A Gripping, Emotional Rollercoaster You Won’t Forget 💔✨

From the very first page, Fooled Me grabbed me by the heart and refused to let go. As a first time reader of T.L. Brien, I’m beyond impressed this was the perfect introduction to the why choose high school/college romance genre.

Be prepared… this book will put you in your feels.
I kept asking myself: how much more can Shelly possibly go through?

This is book one of a duet, and while it’s a quick read, don’t let that fool you this story is anything but sweet. It’s raw, emotional, and at times, downright painful. 💔

What you’ll find inside:

Bully romance with heavy emotional impact

Childhood friends turned something much more complicated

Brothers, neighbors, and tangled relationships

Dual timelines (past & present) that add depth and meaning

I really appreciated how the story moves between past and present, giving us the why behind the strained and messy relationship between Shelly, Nolan, and Kyle. Watching their feelings evolve and unravel was both fascinating and heartbreaking.

⚠️ Fair warning: this won’t be for everyone. Some scenes and dynamics may be difficult to read. But if you enjoy angsty, emotional romances with flawed characters, this will absolutely pull you in.

Josh? Absolutely horrible. No redeeming qualities there.
And Nolan and Kyle? They messed up badly. The emotional damage they caused Shelly is no joke, and let’s just say…

👉 they owe her some MAJOR groveling.

By the end, I was left desperate I need book two immediately to see how (and if!) they redeem themselves.

📌 Voluntary review. No compensation just one reader who was completely and unexpectedly hooked.

No, No, No how much more can Shelly go through. This may be a difficult read for some, but I enjoyed this duet so far. Josh is a horrible piece of work. So are his friends.
Nolan and Kyle have messed up big time and will eventually need to repair the emotional damage they caused to Shelly.
Shelly is a loner at her school who is bullied relentlessly. She had her two best friends who shielded her from some of the damage, but not all of it. They eventually are off at college and a different school and then a school jock Josh comes into the picture. He is sadistic and likes causing harm to the girls he is with more than BDSM (non-consensual) He takes Shelly out to a party and she is dosed with GSB and doesn’t know what happened. Towards the end of the book it shows she was assaulted, but it was made to look consensual. Then later on she was attacked by Josh who then files a fake report turning things around. Shelly receives multiple threatening letters over months. She and the guys have a poly style relationship and things move forward until the guys find the footage and think she lied and they leave her. The story ends at a huge cliffhanger. I hope that Josh gets put away and that the guys do lots of groveling and they all can have their happily ever after. I can’t wait for the second book.

Strong story from baby author, some minor points of development 😄
This has falls into a category I really enjoy dark multiple lover contemporary romance and it has some good tropes to it!
It started in the current timeline and so you get the aftermath of the big event, and then quickly reverts back to the lead up culminating in that boom of an ending 😳 it was good way of developing the overall plotline. It is well written, but does move quite quickly though to a point it was a bit jumpy at times and hard to work out timings between things happening. The characters are engaging and draw out emotions in you as a reader which engages you more with them 😄 for Shelley you wonder how much more can she go through and she grows in strength throughout the book. Kyle and Nolan are sweet boy next door types, Kyle the younger brother is the more outgoing and quick to act whereas Nolan is more measured and a calming influence! At times I just needed to be shown more about them rather than told to me by Shelley.
There’s a high level of drama and angst with the stalker, Josh and then holy moly the way those idiot boys acted in the end 🤦‍♀️ eagerly awaiting the next book.

Good start to a duet

Michelle (Shell) is a quiet, shy girl who prefers her books to socialising. Her two best friends are the Reed brothers: Nolan & Kyle, the boys next door. Throughout her time at school she was bullied & ridiculed & without her knowing Nolan & Kyle protected her from any male attention.

In her last year of school, Nolan is in college & Kyle was moved schools leaving Shell to manage her last year of school by herself. Along comes Josh who has developed an obsession with Shell & won’t be happy till he has broken her & reshaped her.

This is a fast paced, gripping book that will give you all the feels. I am left annoyed with the brothers for not believing Shell, after everything they have seen her go through. I need to read the second book now, to find out what she does. I hope she rips them both a new one!! Who is the mystery shadow man? I believe I know but I will just need to wait to find out when the conclusion come out

This hard hitting book brings to attention what bullying, revenge porn, stalking, ,drugging, S.A. to name a few things. We follow the story of shelly and her best friends.

Shelly always thought she was able.to handle the bullying despite the fact that she never new the reason for being targeted. When a boy suddenly starts defending her and showing an interest in her she hopes things might be change but instead take a dark turn.
When Shelly starts doubting herself and left scared when threatening letters start arriving she begins to be scared to even leave the house.

This is a hard hitting book that really brings to llight the dangers young women face with abuse, drugging, revenge porn, etc. It is very well written and the story flows smoothly, the Author done an amazing job with this book and really gets the reader invested in the story and what happens to the MFC. I look forward to book 2 of this duet for the conclusion of this story.

This should have been a beautiful love story, childhood friends to lovers and partially, it was. But it was also a tense, obsessive, stalker driven, scare story.
Reading it in real time, after the initial opener, made it that much worse. Most books that deal with this level of trauma do so in short flashbacks or character retelling. Seeing Josh’s obsession develop and in his own pov too was incredibly disturbing.
Shelly’s reaction to it all felt real, as did her parents. I loved Nolan and Kyle and how supportive they were of her, and I felt a connection with the three of them as their relationship developed.
And then the ending, omg I wanted to knock heads together. How could they be so stupid?
And then I had another thought, ‘Unknown’ could he have done more?
Could he be…….? 🤔🤔🤔

We start off meeting Shelly and lord we see her going through so many things. I love that we get to know her and her personality. Shelly is a bit naive but that truly does add to her personality at times. Nolan and Kyle are truly trying to protect her while they are at school but they can’t always be there and they don’t see all the bullying that Shelly has to endure. Shelly tries to handle things on her own but isn’t always sure how to handle things. Their relationships are growing throughout the story and at times you truly feel the pain that she going through. Their relationships story is extremely well written and developed. There are some really painful moments in her life that as we journey alongside her the pain explodes out of the story. Their relationships ending was shocking and honestly I can’t wait to what happens next.

Shelly is a very naive young lady with a kind heart and her head in her books. Shelly loves her next-door neighbors, the brothers Nolan and Kyle Reeds. Shelly is the girl that gets bullied at school, She tries to manage it by hiding in the library. In her senior year things start to change. A boy starts talking with her and showing her attention, but what is Josh’s real intentions? Why did Shelly get sick at the bon fire? Is all as it supposed to be? All of a sudden Shelly life is spinning out of control. Why is Jose doing what he is doing? Why is Lisa doing the mean things that she is doing? What is Jose doing with Lisa? This story of how bulling, first time of love, and cruelty of individuals can do unforgiving damage. I am waiting to see how Shelly manages with all that she has been through.

T. L. Brien is a new to me author, so this was the first book I've read by her. Well, I'm happy to report I loved it!
While this was a short read, it was very captivating! Once I began Shelly's story, I didn't stop reading until the end!
This was filled with drama, all the feels, humor, spice, and of course some really sensitive things.
I loved Shelly. My heart definitely hurt for her and what she went through.
I loved seeing the relationship between Nolan, Kyle, and Shelly develop. From neighbors to friends to more. Im not gonna lie though, I was really disappointed with them. I hoping we get some serious groveling in the next book.
I think this was an excellent start to the duet! I need book 2 as soon as possible!!! I need answers!!!

Couldn't put it down!

I devoured this story! Yes, there are some rough parts to read so definitely check the TW. Shelly is a bit naive, but then you really have to think about her age and inexperience. She just wants to be loved. She wants her first kiss and wants someone to experience romance with. She believes that people are good. With all of this, she's the perfect target for bullies. Kyle and Nolan have tried to protect her, but they can only do so much. I felt so bad for all that she endured, how much can she really take? You can help but want to wrap her in a bubble to protect her. I am totally invested in this story and can't wait for the next book! I have so many questions and need to know the answers!!

Wow just wow. I can't believe what happened. It brings you back so many memories of high school. We had bullying but nothing like that. Shelly goes through so much. And in the end the guys that are supposed to protect her and be there for her believe what they are hearing. This book is so twisted and gives you perspective of what true bullying is. And the biggest bully of them all is Josh. What a piece of work. I truly hope he gets what he deserves in the end. I can't wait to read the next book. I need to know if Nolan and Kyle actually redeem themselves. And please let Josh get what is coming to him. I'd love to see Shelly, Nolan and Kyle get their happy ending as well. Fingers crossed 🤞
The second book can't get here soon enough

Overall, for a brand new author, this book was great. I had a hard time with the FMC for the first like 40% of the book. This FMC is naïve to the max and I was severely irritated about the wishy-washiness, but I also haven’t been a teenage girl in decades. This poor girl got run through the wringer between all of the bullying and high school drama. My heart really feels for this FMC… But these boys-between the brothers, Josh and unknown… Good Lord gravy. I’m sad that I don’t already have the second part of the duet because I want to thoroughly shake the brothers… I know all of this emotional torment will be worth it in the end… But good Lord, that cliffhanger! There better be some severe groveling in book 2… Because WTAF… Dumb teenage boys… Can’t wait for book 2 ❤️

I was so engrossed in this book that I didn't even save a quote like I usually do once I started it I couldn't put it down.
Don't get me wrong I was a bit confused by the start but then I realised what was happening and that we needed the before story to understand the first part of the book.
Shell is the fmc she starts off as a young girl moving to a new town with her parents and next door to our 2 males MCs. Her best friend to start off with is a dog she found until her a boys become close.
What entails is friends realising they love each other and bullies who decide that they wanna make life hell for our fmc including a guy who becomes obsessed thinking she is more than friends with the boys.
Haha it sounds confusing but it's really good and I can't wait for book 2.

From the very first page, "Fooled Me" grabbed my attention and refused to let go! As a first-time reader of T.L Brien, I'm thoroughly impressed by her storytelling. This book is an excellent introduction to the why choose high school/college romance genre. The anticipation and build-up surrounding Shelly's return home are masterfully done, creating a suspenseful atmosphere that had me eagerly turning the pages. I was constantly on the edge of my seat, desperate to uncover what would happen next. Brien's writing style is captivating, and her characters are relatable and well-developed. "Fooled Me" is a must-read that sets the stage for an addicting duet!

I really enjoyed this book—it was my first time reading anything by this author, and it definitely won’t be my last. The story was easy to dive into, and the characters were incredibly likeable, even if they leaned a bit on the sweeter side at times. Still, it was a nice escape from reality, which is exactly what I was looking for.
The brothers completely drew me in—they were amazing… until they weren’t. At one point, I was so frustrated with them that I actually had to step away for a bit. I’m still unsure how I feel about Unknown, and I’m really curious to see how the brothers will redeem themselves.
Needless to say, I’ll be picking up book two as soon as it’s released!

I loved this read so much. I know my emotions were all over the place, but this was such a good read and worth it.

Poor Shelly has gone through so much, it just makes me rally that much more for her. Shelly is bullied so much. She had her two best friends that protected her as best as they could. But life happens, like going to college. There a new level happens to Shelly. Everything was good until the end when things take a turn and the boys think she lied to them. That broke my heart.

I cannot see where this goes in the second book. I know this, my girl needs to be worshiped after this.

An incredible story! But be prepared, it is rather dark and twisted in some ways. It is not your typical High School bully slash romance story. I really feel for Shelly, and all of the everything she went through.
Nolan and Kyle…loved them, then not so much, but then again…well, without spoilers, let’s just say, I believe.
Josh is a terrible person, along with his posse of bullies. It’s been a while since I disliked a character so much.
Anywho, I’m looking forward to what’s going to happen next. Exciting stuff, some (deserved) grovelling, and hopefully a happily ever after. Yet, hoping for some twists in the next one!

Shelly (FMC) is a sweet loner who was pretty much a social outcast within her school which made her a target for bullies. Her only friends are the brothers - Nolan & Kyle who live next door to her. They were protective as hell especially when the school jock - Josh started to show interest in her. He was a nasty piece of work that tried all kinds of dirty tricks including drugging Shelly and lying to get what he wanted. With that cliff-hanger ending that was brutal to read I'm curious to see where it will lead in the next book. My heart went out to Shelly big time. This was a great read.

Shell moves in next door to Kyle and Nolan they become best friends. Hiding their true feelings deep down, meanwhile Josh is plotting because he Shell is his obsession. No to mention “Unknown” who seems to lurk in the shadows as well. Once Shell, Nolan and Kyle finally move to their relationship to the next level, they allow ignorance to destroy them. Even though they know about that night and all the things that have gone down. Josh and Lisa were twisted and toxic. Book two can’t come soon enough for me.

I really liked this book. It was my first read from this author, and I would love to read more. The story was easy to get into and the characters were likeable, even if they were a little too sweet sometimes. It’s fiction, so nothing wrong with a break from reality. The brothers were amazing, until they weren’t. I was so angry at them, I had to walk away for a little while. I’m still not sure about Unkown or how the brothers will redeem themselves, but I will definitely be finding out as soon as book 2 is released!

Amazing start

This is an amazing start to this duet. Shelly is a shy and timid girl, who as the book progresses comes into her own and grows. She is madly in love with her 2 neighbors and best friends. There is some mystery in the book, and intrigue that keeps the pages turning to find out what happens. We end with the guys at the very beginning of finding out they made a huge miscalculation. I can't wait for the next book.

This story is intense and trigger-heavy, but undeniably gripping. Shelly’s experience with bullying is raw and unflinching, and although her two best friends stand by her, they can’t shield her from the worst of it—especially once Josh enters the picture and makes everything spiral. When everything finally explodes, Shelly is left on her own. The pacing, emotional stakes, and final cliffhanger kept me turning pages. I’m hooked and can’t wait for the next installment.

New ro me author. And I am not going to lie, I had to change one of the mmc names in my head while reading. Simply because it is my son's name as well. Once I got through that though, I was good to go. It's a hard read because you just feel terrible for the fmc. It was well written and the characters had alot of personality (even when you had the urge to shake them!). I can't wait to see where the story goes. Will definitely read more from this author in the future!

The plot and storyline to this story is really solid and I enjoyed it! The writing feels like it’s most likely a new author that’s just getting in there and getting their feet wet. This has all the elements of being a great story and I really enjoyed the characters and angst involved. I’m looking forward to the next book because there’s so many unanswered questions and I’m making a lot of assumptions based on what we know so far.

First and foremost, this was a decent book. I liked the premise of the story and the backstory. However I wasn’t a huge fan of the fmc or dialogue. Maybe that’s because of her age? She came off disturbingly naive when it came to Josh and a lot of what she said and did made her seem much younger than what she was. The other characters were ok. We got some humor, drama/stalking, and mystery. With the way it ended I am still intrigued enough to see where it all goes.

Love these types of books. Slow burn RH. High school sucks but more so for Shelly. It’s bearable with her best friends. Nolan and Kyle are the best part of school until they aren’t. They haven’t go to a different school. Now you’re stuck dealing with your bullies on your own. Will you make it out? I like how the story goes from past to present. I like that all 3 main characters have their own pov.
