An uncharted island. A vanished crew. Something in the dark that refuses to die.
Travis Pates has been sure of one the end of the world was his fault. He never should've gone out for hot cocoa.
Two months after a distracted driver killed his wife Rebecca—and the child he never knew she was carrying—Travis is barely holding himself together in the rain-soaked mountain town of Kettle Creek, Washington. He's burning through bourbon, getting sidelined at work, and haunted by nightmares that won't let Rebecca rest.
Then a routine search-and-rescue mission pulls him back into action. A massive oil tanker has gone missing off the Washington coast, thirty souls aboard. When Travis and his elite C.E.R.T. team descend from a helicopter onto the abandoned vessel's storm-lashed deck, they find only one survivor—a single crewman, badly mauled and delirious with terror.
Moments later, everything goes wrong.
Stranded on a remote, uncharted island, the team finds warning signs carved into every tree and something moving in the dark between them. Something that bites. Something that doesn't stay dead.
Cut off from the outside world, running low on supplies, and unable to trust each other, Travis must face a threat unlike anything his training prepared him for—while still carrying the weight of everything he's already lost.
I really enjoyed this. Good character building, with a good story - very Resident Evil-esque. I don't want to go into details as it may spoil things for future readers, but if you like Resident Evil style stories then you'll like this. Short chapters keep the action (when it starts) quite punchy and keeps you glued to the pages.
The only thing with the book is it could do with another look over in terms of formatting. One chapter (37) gets repeated right after itself, there's no chapter 41 (it goes from 40 to 42), and some chapters near the middle are without page breaks (so the chapter doesn't appear on a new page), whereas the majority of the book does have them.
Overall though, I had a great time with the story.
