A MESSAGE FROM THE AUTHOR:
I've always loved science fiction, fantasy, and horror, but it wasn't until I combined them with pulp thrillers and noir that I found my voice as an author. I want to leave my readers breathless, want them to feel the desperate longing, the hope and fear my heroes experience as they struggle not just to survive, but to become something more.

Have you read anything by one of the Masters of YA Horror, Jackson Dean Chase? Does he manage to make you cringe, wince or feel terror? Did you want to check under the bed before turning out the lights? It’s all in the delivery, the timing, and the words that are being etched into your brain. That is the difference between being a writer and writing a story.
Some people just have the gift of gore, of making a simple action become dark and sinister, horrifying, even. Jackson Dean Chase has the confidence in his writing ability as the creator of chaos that he has put together the Horror Writers’ Phrase Book filled with a few ideas and thoughts from his own experience, as well as a multitude of phrases for every gory occasion. I’m not saying that “He was stabbed,’ doesn’t make you flinch, but “The knife thrust deep into his belly, rendering his skin useless to contain his spilling intestines,” can paint vivid soundtracks and visuals. NO! Mr. Chase did not write that, I did, but, see how an idea grows?
Directed toward writers looking for that” tag” that electrifies their readers and jolts their senses, Mr. Chase’s handy little book of horrors will help jump start the twisted creativity of those who are fleshing out their own tome of doom. Kind of like bouncing ideas around with an author buddy. I read the entire book, who knows, if a party gets a little dull, I may figure out how to use some of them, even if it’s just for charades.
I received this copy from Jackson Dean Chase in exchange for my honest review. My dark and twisted side thanks him and my light side says this is an author who advocates for ALL authors.

Some of the most ridiculous prose phrases I have ever read.
Based purely on this book, I am boycotting EVERYTHING else this guy has ever written or will ever write.
The fact that two of the reviews here are by the author is a dead giveaway of the total lack of professionalism involved.
Total, utter cr#p.

This book is so much fun! With phrases like 'The baseball bat hit a bloody home run across his face', 'She became a human candle of sizzling fat and cooked flesh', 'Melted brain leaked out of the corpse like clumps of gray jam', or 'She sank her bloodstained teeth into the living meat, ripping off a hairy chunk of his arm', it's sure to get your imagination pumping.
I especially enjoyed Part 5- Words of Power. Who hasn't wracked their brain searching for the perfect word for green?
I commend the author for being generous with his work, and find the idea of using the phrases book as writing prompts interesting. It's broken down into sections like 'Burning', 'Impalement', 'Mental Problems', and 'Scary Places' to name a few- which is so useful. As an aspiring writer who always wonders how far to push the envelope to get to the more visceral aspects of my work, I found this book enlightening! If you aren't a writer, the sheer entertainment value is worth the purchase. Pick up a copy, and take a look. If you dare.

The Horror Writers’ Phrase Book by Jackson Dean Chase is an invaluable guide to writers who want to write horror stories, dark fantasy, paranormal fiction or dark fiction in general. This reference book is a stylized and fun way to get more out of your writing. It gives ideas for more dynamic phrases and a livelier sentence structure.
Each section covers phrases and ways to make your scenes more descriptive too. There are segments that cover how to write everything from gruesome injuries, murders and murder weapons, dead bodies, fighting styles, disaster, personal tragedy, exotic locations, emotions and more. Chase really seems to know how to write fiction that may be on the more disturbed and morbid side of writing. The author gives you innumerable ways to frame scenes and gives the professional and the budding writer everything they might need for these kinds of stories. I highly recommend this for anyone who wants to write dark fiction.

I immediately homed in on this book as I had found books like 'Sybrina's phrase book' and 'The Emotional Thesaurus' very useful in my writing pursuits. So, to have one specifically focused on horror was a no brainier for me. I wasn't disappointed. Jackson Dean Chase has produced an easily navigable e-book, thoughtfully laid out and full of rich phrases that you can either use out of the box, or (as in my case) as mental stimulation to come up with new, original descriptions. The big advantage of these type of books is that they allow a writer to plough on with a first draft while still writing satisfying prose. I can't recommend this book more highly for all horror and dark fantasy writers. Keep a look out for his other genre phrase books too.
