I'm Not Scared - Part One: Masked Men of Fear Island

Rate this book
Welcome to Fear Island.

Nobody gets through those gates without an invitation and nobody gets an invitation without us knowing exactly who they are first. So before you take another step, understand that we already know your name, your history and your fears that keep you up at night. You were chosen for a reason and I hope you find what you’re looking for.

Let me be clear, when the sun goes down. This is not a theme park. This is not a haunted house you walk through and don’t get touched. The hunters behind these masks are not performing. What they are, is exceptional at finding exactly what makes you come undone and they will find it, I promise you that.

The contracts in your inbox? Take them seriously.
The wristband waiting for you? Never take it off.
Your safe word? Remember it.

Here is how tonight works. You? No rules. None. You can run, you can hide, you can fight back, you can scream until your throat gives out, you can do whatever your instincts tell you to do when something much bigger and much faster than you decides it wants you. The island is yours.

The hunters however, have two.

Don't kill anyone. And only chase the colour on your wrist.

Some of you will last five minutes. Some of you will surprise yourselves. And some of you will walk out of here and never be satisfied with ordinary again.

Step inside, if you dare.

I'm not scared is part one, there will be at least two parts for these characters. I will be rapid releasing them a few week apart. This book does end on a cliffhanger.

OH HOT DAMN. Am I surprised? No
Jaye continues to make me throw whatever I’m reading on the back burner to inhale her work. I love that this feels new while keeping all the things I loved about her Masked Men series included. I LOVED Vero and his brain. I loved Kayla’s no nonsense attitude and how she held her own against the guys, especially against Clay.
Ares is an interesting character and I hope we get to know him and his quirks a bit more.

The ending definitely hit a peak with a shock value cliffhanger and was not expecting that after Vero and Kayla’s moment in the prop closet.

-“Most people want to fix it.” “I’m not going to fix it, but I will sit here with you until you are ready to move.”
I loved this moment

If this is part 1, I can’t wait to continue and see how their story plays out and hopefully see some more characters, the scarecrow has me intrigued 👀

✨️ARC REVIEW✨️

“Paper-cut Princess, fear isn’t about being scared ... It’s about what you enjoy before you realise you should’ve run and not involved yourself with monsters.”

Thankyou to @jayeprattauthor
for yet another arc copy. I am so greatful. 🫶🏻

WOW! JAYE! You freaking did the thing with this book! Hands down my favourite book by you so far! 🙌🏻 It was funny, SO DIRTY and it held such deep emotions and touched on confronting topics in such a respectable way. The vibes and atmosphere were so good and right up my alley! 😍 The writing had me deeply immersed from the first page. Those chase scenes? I honestly felt like I was right there amongst it all. Such a wild time and such an addictive read. 🤭

The way the really confronting topics were represented with Vero was done with alot of care and respect, which made his whole part of the story hit so emotionally hard. 🥹 I love everything about him as a character. I loved his relationship with Brawley and his energy was just so fun. I felt so deeply for him through his bad episodes, ugh my little heart. I just wanted to dive into the book and hold the guys hand. 🥹

The relationships building between Kayla, Vero, Brawley, Ares & Clay were all so great and I love how Jaye always makes each connection in her why-choose harems feel unique and distinct from one one another. 👏🏻 Other than her connection with Vero I think my the dynamic I loved most was definitely between her and Clay. Just with how their relationship started off on the wrong foot with misinformation to "she's not my girlfriend but she's mine." vibe were just delicious! I think so far I am 100% a Clay girly.🥵

To wrap it up... Lets talk about the ending cause I feel like Jaye just mic dropped and walked the fuck out...🤣 Like WHAT DO YOU MEAN SHE SAID THAT! 😳 My heart has been torn out and thrown on the floor and maybe stomped on a couple of times... 😫 I need part 2 like last week! I cannot wait to see where this series goes.

P.S. Is it bad that the cornfield has me more excited than terrified? 👀

4.5 🌟 3 🌶️

This book was so damn good. A darker, more twisted version of Jaye’s original masked men series this one will leave you breathless (though hopefully not in the same way as our FMC :p) and begging for more!
I loved the darker nature of this story and the all the characters who are clearly not quite right in their own ways. Unhinged and out of control, our MMCs all have very different personalities and ways of seeing the world whilst our FMC Kayla is looking for something out of the ordinary and a more than just some “light spanking and mediocre hair pulling”.
I love the idea of fear island, a family friendly amusement park during the day and an adult's only playground at night. All the different locations, like the asylum and the cornfield and the cemetery, they paint a very clear picture of the atmosphere and I was loving it.
That cliff hanger left me very sad though, as I wasn’t expecting it to end right then and now I am HANGING for book 2!!

I was not prepared for the emotional damage this book inflicted. Is it spicy? OMG, YES. It is filthy, chaotic, with one lucky woman getting more “D" than should be legal (honestly, I’m jealous). Amongst all the heat and fun is a vulnerability that recognizes the depth of these damaged souls and the agony of watching a loved one suffer.

Kayla’s life has been dull until she meets Vero. Instantly drawn to his chaotic energy, she finds herself swept into his orbit. His damage seems to call out to hers. Infatuated with his "Papercut Princess,” (AKA Kayla) he decides he isn't letting her go.

The rest of the Fear Island Crew adds that extra spice we all love to see in a good romance novel.

Brawley, Vero’s broody, possessive partner who will "unalive" anyone who poses a threat to his partner. Wanting to see Vero happy, he cautiously allows Kayla into their lives.

Clay, the island’s head of security is your typical egotistical "Alpha-hole.” He is visibly frustrated when Kayla refuses to be intimidated by his antics.

Aries, the mastermind behind Fear Island is a wild card. On the surface, he is friendly, observant, and always seems to know exactly what everyone needs. However, behind the mask is a monster everyone should fear seeing.

After signing an NDA Kayla wonders what type of danger happens "after dark" to require such secrecy. With the excitement of the unknown, Kayla accepts her invitation. Fear Island opens up an erotic, adrenaline-laced experience making her feel more alive than she ever has. Seeing kindred spirits in Vero, Brawley, Clay and Aries she starts to feel a part of a family.
While the spice is lit, the character complexity is what truly hooked me. The interpersonal relationships feel real, with a level of intimacy rarely seen in real life. Unfortunately, life is messy, hard and not always pretty, and this story isn’t any different.

The vulnerability illustrated amongst these broken souls made becoming emotionally invested with the story, but more importantly the characters easy. The author has an awareness of the complexities that come with mental illness. This awareness allowed her to paint the stark reality of battling our inner demons while not being able to trust your own mind.
Vero is definitely my favorite character. I felt his damage on a visceral level and even though he is a fictional character, I’m still attached to him. He will now be a character that lives in my head rent-free and I have decided he must be protected at all costs.

There are still two more parts to this story, and I’m already thrumming with anticipation for part 2. You seriously need to read this book.

This book was SO good! I couldn't put it down, I had to know what was going to happen with the characters from when I read the first page. I'm Not Scared-Part One follows Kayla, Vero, Brawley, Ares, and Clay. The guys all live in the same house and Vero and Brawley have a relationship together prior to Kayla coming into their lives.

Kayla is a bartender who doesn't put up with other people's bad attitudes. She has an ex boyfriend that is trying to make her jealous with his current girlfriend which is the sister of Clay. One night when she's walking home she stops at the gas station down the road from the bar, where she runs into a mysterious man who is discussing the fact that paper bags at the grocery stores make trying to unalive someone impossible and she makes a joke about unaliving someone via papercuts.

Vero has mental health problems and has figured out how to live with it. He has his friends and coworker at Fear Island where they live and work to help him when he needs it, he also has Brawley his serious boyfriend who he can obsess over. One night he runs into Kayla and can't get her out of his head. He talks Brawley into letting him invite her to Fear Island to chase her.

Brawley is a fighter who is a giant of a man with big muscles that he knows how to use. He has an obsessive love for Vero where if another man touches him he gets violent! He sees Kayla as disposable and a passing fancy for Vero, until Vero has a mental episode and he sees that she's different and cares for Vero.

Clay is full of anger towards Kayla, after getting some wires crossed he thinks she is a threat to one of the only people he cares about: his sister. But he can't get her out of his mind after being apart of her Fear Island experience.

Ares is different, he doesn't see people the same way as the others, he's very internal and trier to get the upper hand when it comes to personal relationships where they trust him and feel like they owe him for something.

When they come together it's a thrill of running away and dark passions. But when they think the Vero is better from his mental episode and the guys leave him alone in the house he goes off the deep end again but this time publicly and in a way that hurts Kayla without Vero meaning to.

This is book one in this series and should be read in series order because it ends in a cliff hanger. For me this is a 5/5 star read and a 4/5 on the spicy scale. This is a darker romance and you should check the content warnings just in case.

This is the first book in a new and darker masked men series by Jaye Pratt. It is so unique, a bit unhinged, spicy with MM, and has a great mix of characters!

So for me, this book was like if the Midnight Mayhem series by Amo Jones had a baby with Jaye's masked men series. It's a great mashup of the vibes and atmosphere, and that like suspense or adrenaline that comes with the unique circumstances these characters are in. It's dark but not too dark. I love the whole premise of it being on an island that is a family-friendly theme park during the day and a dark, suspenseful, primal adult chase at night.

The characters, even the side characters that will hopefully have their own books in the future, are all so different and each has their own "thing". Whether it's a mental disorder, a love for spiders, being a hunting scarecrow, or feeding off violence, they all have something that makes them perfect for playing their part at the park. The MM in this book with Brawley and Vero is amazing! It's possessive, obsessive, raw, feral, and absolutely unhinged. They hold nothing back.

I really enjoyed reading this book! It's just different than anything I've read. The chase scenes are suspenseful and go through many different locations. The characters are all unique with something special about each one. The cliffhanger has me desperately needing the next book to see how everything gets resolved!

Having read all of Jaye Pratt's masked men novella's, I thought that they could not get any better.
BUT, I was wrong! I'm not scared is in a whole new wheelhouse of expertise.
Written in such a manner, that yes there are definitely triggers that some may not be able to sit and read, but are written with such respect. #mentalhealthmatters
The unhinged Vero, who obviously suffers a mental illness, is surrounded by other unhinged monsters, that enables him to blend in and stay hidden. There is a reason he left his family behind and found his little bit of "Paradise" that suited his needs.
Brawley is Vero's and Vero belongs to Brawley. A great MM dynamic with plenty of spice.
Playing games on Fear Island once the sun goes down, Kayla is invited to attend. And she accepts, not sure what she is getting herself into.
There is a lot happening within the story. Kayla and her stalker ex. Clay and his sister. Ares with his secrets. Vero and Brawley with their own obsessive behaviour!
Vero saw Kayla and knew he needed to see her in his playground on Gear Island.
She has no fear! Or does she?
Having multiple POV's...Clay, Ares, Kayla, Brawley and Vero is a show of a great storyteller, and Jaye does it well.
Loved this story from the very first page right through to a cliff hanger I never saw coming.
Bring on Book 2! Cannot wait!!

Kayla Doesn’t Fold

Some books you read. Some books grab you by the collar and refuse to let go. This one? Yeah… it’s the second kind.

I went in expecting to enjoy it because Jaye doesn’t really miss, but I didn’t expect to get this hooked this fast. It pulled me out of everything else I was reading and basically said, “nope, you live here now.”

What stands out most is how it manages to feel familiar and completely new at the same time. You can feel the DNA of the Masked Men series, but it’s not repeating anything. It’s evolving.

Vero is the kind of character that creeps up on you. One minute you’re curious, the next you’re fully invested in how his mind works. Kayla balances him perfectly. She’s sharp, grounded, and doesn’t bend for anyone, which makes every interaction feel charged, especially when she’s going head-to-head with Clay.

Then there’s Ares… who feels like a question mark I want to solve. There’s clearly more under the surface, and I’m already impatient for it.

And just when things start settling into a rhythm, that ending hits. Hard. What starts as a moment between Vero and Kayla turns into a full stop, “wait—WHAT just happened?” kind of cliffhanger.

If this is only the beginning, I’m already locked in. And honestly? I’m going to need more from this world… especially Cave. There’s a story there, I can feel it.

If this was just part one; I cannot wait for part two!

This is a much darker masked men novella than any of Jaye’s previous books - but I’m totally here for it.

I love Vero so much, & his relationship with Brawley is as unhinged as it is wholesome. Clay & Ares have their own dark tendencies, ones they feel no one will ever be able to handle.

After Vero has one conversation with Kayla, he knows she’s supposed to be his. When he brings her to Fear Island to look around, her anticipation rises, & Ares follows them around on the tour quietly watching & taking in everything she does. When she doesn’t flinch at Clay getting into her personal space, you know they all feel the same pull.

When Kayla gets the invite to the after hours Fear Island, she jumps at the chance. The experience is everything, it’s too much & too little at the same time.

But when Vero spirals & she’s just present for him, she isn’t prepared for his reaction when he turns up at the bar she works at. Brawley, Clay & Ares arrivals don’t do anything to help Kayla as she comes to terms with what’s happened.

This novella is left on a cliff hanger, & honestly it could end up anywhere in part two! What a ride, I need more!

✨ “Most people want to fix it.” “I’m not going to fix it, but I will sit here with you until you are ready to move.” ~ Kayla ✨

Wow, Jaye has done it again! I haven’t picked up a single one of her books that I didn’t absolutely devour. While there are multiple characters, the ones who stood out most to me were Brawley and Vero; the way they claim and obsess over each other is everything.

Vero and Kayla share a special understanding that’s both sweet and intense in its own way. As for Clay and Kayla, there’s definitely something different there, but I just couldn’t figure Clay out.

This book tackles a lot of mental instability, yet it’s written in a respectful, non-degrading way. It’s amazing how much plot and depth Jaye can pack into under 200 pages—she’s truly a master at it.

This was only part one in the series, and let me tell you, I need part two yesterday. That ending completely caught me off guard. This book releases April 14, 2026, and it’s one you’ll definitely want to add to your TBR.

Fear Island is a real scream - it'll either make or break you!!

By day, it's a popular family tourist attraction, but once night falls, for those who have been selected and have signed the NDA, that's when the real excitement begins.

This dark, why choose novella is an adult's kinky playground.

Vero's uniquely quirky personality completely steals the spotlight, and his relationship with Brawley is raw and passionate, fueled by mutual obsession.

Vero meets Kayla, and they both seemingly have a strong connection towards each other.

Kayla's the ultimate bad @rse – a fearless, no-nonsense FMC who knows exactly what she wants and isn't afraid to go after it.

Thoughts -
🪦I want more ASAP!!
🪦Jaye, Jaye, Jaye... that ending though?!
🪦It's dark, but not too dark - perfect for a pellet cleanser or for dipping your toes into the unknown.
🪦110% Approval.

I would like to thank Jaye Pratt, for this fantastic opportunity. I received this advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest opinion.🖤🖤

ARC READER REVIEW

OH MY GOD! Jaye I need you to publish part 2 IMMEDIATELY! I was left hanging at the end and wanting more! How could you leave it like that? As with all her other books, I absolutely loved these characters! Especially Vero. I identified with him so much, knowing how hard mental illness can be. I just wanted to protect and help him.

Each of the guys has their own personalities that make you love them. I wanted Kayla to start a reverse harem with them from the start. And this is why Jaye got me into the why choose trope. She has such a talent for making you love her characters and not wanting to choose just one. Thankfully, she never makes you choose.

I got an ARC copy of this novella and I am so grateful to be able to read and review it before release. It was most definitely worth it. If you're reading this review then make sure you get your copy of I'm not Scared when I releases. It is so worth the read!

This is part one in the Masked Men of Fear Island series. Fear island during the day focuses on fun for families and at night the focus is on an adult paradise. Kayla is a fearless and quick-witted bartender who is invited to Fear Island after dark by one of the workers. Clay is the rigid security guard, Vero is the highly energetic scare actor, Brawley is the obsessive fighter, and Ares is the observant bartender at Fear Island. I loved how Kayla was so understanding and her connection with all of the men, especially Vero and Brawley. This book was hard to put down, the chase scenes were fun and spicy. I can't wait to read what happens next and to learn more about the characters. I recommend this book for readers who like why choose unhinged masked men and audacious FMCs. I received an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

Thank you Jaye Pratt for giving me an early copy of I’m not scared.

““Paper-cut princess, fear isn’t about being scared.” A small smile curves his mouth. “It’s about what you enjoy before you realize you should’ve run and not involved yourself with monsters.””

This book was soo good!!! I can’t wait for the rest of the series to hit my kindle! All the MMCs are AMAZING and very morally grey, Vero has to be my favourite. He made me laugh out loud so many times and his relationship with Brawley is so sweet 🥺
If you’re a dark romance reader, PLEASE pick up this book!! This series is going to be AMAZING and I can’t wait to see other people’s thoughts on this one 😍

4 ⭐️ ARC review kindly from Jaye as part of her street team 🥰

This is a new masked men series from Jaye Pratt that is kind of like a horror style Halloween theme park on a little island. The main characters so far are Kayla, Vero, Clay, Brawley & Ares. Vero meets Kayla and decides he needs to invite her to their island where they run an adult night horror themed fantasy experience. This is where things get interesting as Clay hates Kayla and Veros boyfriend Brawley doesn’t want to share.

The characters in this story are different but work, it was a good little short story but does end on a cliff hanger for the second part of this series.

If you like Jaye’s books you won’t be disappointed 🥰

This is the start of moving away from Jaye's other masked men series with a whole new set of masked men

This world is much darker than the previous series with alot more in-depth with the mental health of the characters and i am here for it

In the first book we meet some characters who work at a theme park during the day, but at night it turns into a fun adult version, where you get chased and defiled

I gotta say I think I am in love with Vero and I need so much more of him and the rest of the team. I love the FMC Kayla she is badass and totally herself

I wish this place was real, as I feel like I have found my best friends haha

Can't wait for more from this series and more spice as Jaye just knows how to hit it every time🔥

Suchhhhh a good ARC and a great change in the masked men collection. I did wonder how this would differentiate from the previous masked men books but this new series is going to be SO GOOD.

Vero being pretty central to book one feels like a great choice he is what I can only compare to an unstable Golden Retriever….

Each character had enough development and hinting to storylines that I’m wanting to know more about all of them but they all played a satisfying part in book one.

Loving the eerie hints to Cave, so hopeful he will become central to another book!

The whole vibe of this book is so different to previous and I imagine it will continue to be a great series.

Another fantastic novella from this author. I really enjoyed it , it was filled with plenty of steam and some very interesting characters. I am so intrigued by the whole idea of this place where anything and everything can happen. I can't wait for more in this series with that ending and I'm keeping everything crossed we get to see more from the other characters and we get to see them get their stories told. Loved this start to a brand new series by this author , im so excited for what's to come next.

Jaye Pratt brings a new and exciting level of depth and derangement to her characters in I'm not scared. Whether it is Vero's Mania or Ares' psychopathy, the level of acceptance that is found by all the characters on fear Island is beautiful to see. They don't need to fixed, they just need an environment that they are free to be themselves.

Your mental health matters and Jaye has provided a wonderfully thought out and detailed content warning so if you have any mental health concerns, please check these out before reading.

I can’t believe how much I loved this book!! I mean I am always a fan of Jaye Pratt, but this was a whole other level. Everything in this book fits perfectly together allowing for so lay different character personalities and traits. The writing is well thought out and makes you feel everything the characters are feeling. I am so disappointed it was only part 1 because I am already ready to read the second part. Everything about this met my dark romance desires !
