The last thing Bode needed was complications. He got two. Pro snowboarder Bode Hayashi is desperate. Sponsors are dropping him, everyone wants to know where he’s disappeared to, and he isn’t ready to talk. So when his mom suggests renting out his spare bedrooms to her newest protege, it seems like the perfect solution. And the protege comes with a friend, which means double the rent money. How much trouble can a couple of wholesome, naive Nebraskans cause? A lot, it turns out. Lucky is in Colorado chasing her dream job. Wade is there chasing Lucky, not that he’ll admit it. And neither of them is remotely what Bode expected. And when the guys find out what Lucky has been drawing in her spare time, everything changes. A Field Guide to Wayward Roommates is a spicy MMF romantic comedy about a woman who thinks she has everything under control, and the two men who are very, very happy to prove otherwise.
Three lonely hearts, one mountain house, and nowhere left to hide.
Bode is already hanging by a thread when two new roommates step into the life he’s been avoiding. He’s burnt out, emotionally numb, and close to losing what’s left of the career that built him. Lucky arrives focused on control. Wade arrives warm, loyal, and carrying feelings he’s hidden for too long. What should be temporary turns messy the second all three of them start seeing too much.
As the walls inside that house come down, the tension shifts from awkward to loaded. Lucky’s private fantasies stop feeling distant. Wade’s devotion stops reading like harmless friendship. And Bode, who has spent months cut off from himself, starts feeling everything at once. What grows between them is tangled in secrecy, want, trust, and the risk of being known too well by people who won’t turn away.
What begins as emotional fallout turns into something hotter and more intimate than any of them expect. The sexual pull is strong, the power dynamics are charged, and every step forward forces them to confront what they want, what they fear, and what it means to choose each other without pretending any of this is easy. It’s a bruised love story built through honesty, craving, care, and the slow unraveling of three people who can’t keep hiding.
An ultra-steamy, emotionally intense why choose romance about three guarded people who stumble into intimacy through proximity, desire, and hard-won honesty, then learn that healing asks for choice, trust, and the courage to be fully seen. At its core, it’s about burnout, sexual self-discovery, and building a kind of love that lets them move beyond survival and into something mutual, messy, and real.
The Elevator Pitch: A burnt-out snowboarder, a guarded engineer, and the best friend who followed her to the mountains end up under one roof, where grief, desire, and old loyalties start pressing against each other in dangerous ways. As the walls between them crack, private fantasies turn intimate, friendship turns volatile, and every choice asks whether love can survive being seen too clearly. What begins as a temporary arrangement becomes a charged, emotionally messy entanglement about control, longing, and the kind of healing that only happens when nobody gets to stay hidden.
The characters in this novella are not only diverse but also intricately crafted, showcasing a range of human experiences that resonate deeply with readers. Each character embodies a unique blend of traits that make them relatable and engaging, drawing readers into their individual journeys filled with struggles and triumphs.
Bode stands out as a particularly compelling character. His humor serves as a coping mechanism, a way to mask the deeper issues he grapples with, including anxiety, depression, and ADHD. These struggles are portrayed with a level of realism that many readers will find familiar, as they reflect the challenges of navigating mental health in a competitive environment. Bode's desire to step back from the pressures of competition and reconnect with the joy of snowboarding is a poignant theme throughout the novella. This journey highlights the often-overlooked reality that intense competition can lead to burnout, stripping away the passion that initially drew individuals to their pursuits. The narrative effectively conveys the importance of mental health conversations, illustrating that articulating one's feelings can be difficult, especially when the root causes of those feelings remain elusive.
Lucky is another character who adds depth to the story. Her sharp wit and sarcasm are not merely for comedic relief; they serve as a façade that conceals her insecurities, particularly regarding her erotic art and personal relationships. Readers will find her journey relatable as she navigates the complexities of putting herself and her art out into the world, facing the fear of rejection and the desire for acceptance. Her character arc emphasizes the courage it takes to embrace one's identity, including the quirks and kinks that make us unique. Through Lucky, the novella explores themes of vulnerability and self-acceptance, encouraging readers to confront their own insecurities and to understand that sharing one’s true self is a vital part of forming meaningful connections.
Wade, often described as a "golden retriever" in personality, brings a refreshing positivity to the group. His character is multifaceted, showcasing not only his love and talent but also the exhaustion that comes from his demanding job as an orthopedic surgeon. Readers can relate to Wade's struggles with anxiety and the pressure to maintain a facade of happiness while grappling with the draining nature of his work. His relationship with his roommates serves as a grounding force, illustrating the importance of having a support system in place. Wade's journey also includes the humorous yet challenging process of learning how to snowboard, which serves as a metaphor for embracing failure and persistence in the face of adversity.
The side characters, including family members, friends, and teammates, enrich the narrative by providing a balance of humor and honesty. Their interactions highlight the significance of community and the role of support systems in overcoming personal challenges. These characters contribute to the novella's authenticity, showcasing the realities of friendship, love, and the importance of having people around who can nourish both body and soul, especially during tough times.
The settings within the novella are vividly described, allowing readers to be transported into the characters' world. Whether it’s the cozy atmosphere of the roommates' shared home, the exhilarating slopes of the snowy mountains, or the bustling environment of the office, each location is crafted to enhance the emotional landscape of the story. This immersive quality invites readers to experience the highs and lows alongside the characters, making their journeys feel all the more impactful.
The writing style is a blend of humor and emotional depth, with moments that are both spicy and heartfelt. The exploration of mental health is handled with sensitivity and honesty, making it a central theme that resonates throughout the narrative. The plot unfolds at a pace that keeps readers engaged, allowing for character development and the exploration of their interconnected struggles and triumphs. The romantic elements are infused with humor and realism, capturing the complexities of relationships in a way that feels genuine. However, there is a critique regarding the balance between emotional discussions and the frequent transition to intimate moments, which can sometimes detract from the depth of the characters' emotional connections.
The novella is notable for its exploration of diverse and spicy content, offering a range of intimate encounters that reflect the characters' evolving relationships. While these moments are well-written, some readers may find themselves longing for more emotional connection rather than an abundance of spice. This narrative choice raises important conversations about boundaries, acceptance, and the necessity of open communication in relationships.
Additionally, the representation of cultural diversity is commendable, showcasing characters from various backgrounds, including Japanese and Indian heritage. The scenes where these cultures intersect provide readers with a rich tapestry of experiences, particularly through food and dialogue, enriching the overall narrative.
"The Field Guide to Wayward Roommates" is a spicy, humorous novella that thoughtfully addresses mental health, friendship, and the complexities of work-life balance. It is highly recommended for readers who enjoy spicy narratives infused with mischief, humor, honesty, and heartfelt moments. The characters' journeys offer valuable lessons about acceptance, communication, and the importance of nurturing one's mental health while navigating the challenges of life and relationships.
Kristin Lance's A Field Guide to Wayward Roommates is another great addition to the Aimee Position series. Do not worry if you have not read the other books though. The characters themselves do not even know who Aimee is until about a third of the way through the story, so new readers can jump in easily. It works perfectly well as a standalone.
I do not know how Lance manages it, but she consistently balances the spice you expect from an MMF romance with strong, character driven storytelling. The heat is definitely there, but the real focus is the characters and their emotional journeys. When we first meet them, all three are hiding parts of who they really are. It is only when they come together that they realize there is no shame in the parts they had kept hidden.
Yes, the catalyst that brings them together involves erotic but empowering art. But it quickly becomes clear that the connection between them runs deeper than attraction. Each character brings something the others need, and watching them find that balance together is incredibly satisfying.
The story is witty, heartfelt, and spicy. This is a great option if you enjoy MMF romance that focuses just as much on emotional connection as it does on heat.

This MMF Why-choose rom-com was just the quick, fun, fast-paced feel-good heartwarming pick me up I needed. It was just easy to get into and read with entertaining characters, funny plot, and extra smutty. Lucky, Bode, and Wade had such a great dynamic together. Everything from the tender moments, the witty banter, and steam were all fantastic.
If you're in search of a relativily short, sweet, extra spicy why-choose where the boyfriends are also boyfriends, this was such a great time.
Book 4 of The Aimee Position can be read as a standalone.
Secrets Shared Between Three When Bode, Lucky and Wade end up sharing a house, what starts out as a roommate situation becomes so much more. I loved how these three needed to be “three” in order to be together and find harmony. Plus, Lucky’s domme-ing of Bode and Wade is red hot! Another terrific read by Kristin Lance.
Love, love, love this one. The main characters each have something different that they are going through. There’s discussion of mental illness but in a healthy way. Their stories progresses naturally, so beautiful. There’s spicy spice and a great HEA.

This story is triple POV, well written, and a fast-paced, sweet and spicy, friend/housemates to lovers, contemporary ménage a trois, erotic, romantic comedy between Bode, the male ex-Olympic champion snowboarder lead with ADHD and struggling with mental health, and his housemates, Lucky, the female industrial engineer lead with a private erotic art hobby who was just hired at his mother’s company, and Wade, the male orthopaedic surgeon lead and her college best friend who relocated partially because she did. I adored Wade’s golden retriever vibe, and the way he was so open in his engagements with people. I enjoyed Lucky’s career confidence and her enjoyment of her hobby. I empathised with Bode’s struggles and enjoyed seeing him work to engage with the world. I enjoyed the balance the three of them brought to a relationship and the way they supported each other to improve mental health and self-confidence. I enjoyed Lucky’s gentle pleasure-focused dominance in the spicy intimate scenes. I enjoyed the exploration focus of intimacy and the joy the characters found together. I adored the way both Wade and Lucky worked to provide mental and emotional space for Bode when he found the world overwhelming. I appreciated the acknowledgment that mental health issues are often ongoing and need professional support to overcome. I enjoyed the confidence all characters had in their future. I enjoyed the integrated and supportive secondary characters, especially Lucky’s work friend, who I’m hoping gets her own story.

I liked “How to Come Between Soulmates,” somehow I missed “How to Catch a Book Babe,” I loved “The Care and Feeding of Meddling Himbos,” but “A Field Guide to Wayward Roommates” is the best yet and I will read every book that follows. I can’t help but wonder if there’s a Patreon that inspired DeviDraws which made me wonder if there’s a podcast that inspired The Aimee Position. (and also, based on the blurb I was picturing art left around somewhere, but DeviDraws is so much better than what I was imagining!)
Even though this is triple POV, throughout the book Bode felt most like a “main character” and there was a conversation that happened toward the end of the book that sort of codified what I was feeling. I think, too, that each book gets better; more nuanced, character development deepens, and we continue to fall in love with the members of our throuples.
This episode of the Aimee Position deals heavily with mental health, fear and shame around kink and non-traditional relationships, and TW for grooming/gaslighting (of an adult, not on page), although I wish that some of this was talked about/addressed more, they were not all with the same level of depth.
Money quote describing Wade: He took up space like a friendly draft horse stabled in a space intended for a smaller animal.
BFF Emily – oh, Emily, your scenes are few but memorable. Y’all, I laughed so loud I scared one of my cats and he ran into the bedroom and the other cat looked like she was about to attack him.
This book is so good it makes me want to reread the previous!.

This is a fast-paced, emotionally rich, and delightfully steamy triple-POV romance that balances humor, heart, and heat with impressive ease.
At the center are three compelling leads: Bode, a former Olympic snowboarder navigating ADHD and ongoing mental health challenges; Lucky, a confident industrial engineer with a quietly bold creative side through her private art; and Wade, hthe best friend turned orthopedic surgeon, whose warmth and openness make him instantly lovable. Each perspective adds depth, making their connection feel layered, intentional, and real.
The story handles mental health with care and realism, acknowledging that healing isn’t linear and often requires ongoing support. Some of the most touching moments come from the quiet ways Wade and Lucky show up for Bode, giving him room to breathe when things feel overwhelming while still reminding him he’s not alone. The intimacy is both spicy and purposeful, with a strong emphasis on exploration, communication, and shared joy rather than just heat for its own sake. That emotional connection elevates every scene.
Overall, this is a thoughtful, sexy, and emotionally satisfying romance that delivers on both character depth and relationship dynamics. If you’re looking for a story that combines sweetness, spice, and genuine emotional support between partners, this one absolutely hits the mark.

An amazing reverse harem story. Bode is suffering from depression after winning the snowboarding gold medal. He has been living alone in his big house, so his mother suggests he take on a roommate. He also found a job in Elkhead but he hasnt told Lucky that. The moment he sees the house Lucky is renting a room in he decides to ask if he could rent as well. While he is talking to Bode, Lucky hears the conversation and is angry that Wade did not tell her about moving. Now Bode has 2 people staying at his house and living with them he starts to come out of depression. And when Bode tells Wade about DeviDraws, Wade realises he has to tell Lucky that he has always loved her. Wade also wants Bode and watching DeviDraws comics together, they get closer. 📚✨ A Field Guide to Wayward Roommates by Kristin Lance ⭐️3.5/5 | 🌶️3/5
okay this book??? cozy cabin vibes without the actual snowed-in trope (still would’ve been elite though)
Now let's see how many of the checkboxes this one hits: forced proximity ✔️ roommate chaos ✔️ “This might get complicated…” energy ✔️
triple POV and I actually really liked how it was done; I felt connected to all three characters, which lately I feel like has been a struggle in some of my recent books: Bode is just struggling, overwhelmed, trying his best. Wade is a golden retriever man. No notes. And then my girl Lucky is confident, creative, and quietly bold.
What I loved about this book was a lot: the relationship felt BALANCED (no one sidelined); MMF with actual bi rep-not just centered around the FMC; and LUCKY??? stepping into her dominant moment with TWO men…as she should
the spice here felt more exploratory + connection-focused, which I really enjoyed
I do wish some moments had a bit more depth because I was invested, but overall this was such a fun, slightly chaotic, sweet + spicy read
📖 reading mood: cozy cabin energy, oversized hoodie, something warm to drink, and ignoring all responsibilities
This is the story of 3 individuals coming together first in friendship, then as more. Bode is an Olympic snowboarder struggling with his identity after winner a gold medal. Lucky is the newest industrial engineer at Bode's mother's company. She also happens to be Bode's new roommate. Her best friend Wade is an orthopedic surgeon and secretly in love with her. After helping her move into Bode's house, he negotiates his way into also renting a room in the house.
There is an underlying theme of mental health which was beautifully handled. It never got dark and twisty but addressed a serious issue with grace. The theme affected all 3 leads in different ways, and we the reader were able to quietly observe as each tackled their issues, navigating towards a more healthy position.
Three strong personalities coming together: Strength. Joy. Passion. Individually they struggle but joined together they're able to find their stride and become more whole. This book was both uplifting and passionate. A definite must read.
Lucky is moving to to start working a new job with the help of her best friend Wade. She is not aware that Wade is staying and catches him asking Bode if he can rent the other room. She is beyond mad and hurt at Wade. He is her best friend and did not tell her is was moving too. Bode is dealing with some things since winning gold at the Olympics and really tries to not let these two in but that changes when he sees Lucky side hustle and her drawings are bringing something out of him that he did not know was inside of him and he is finally feeling some emotion which has not happened in awhile. Lucky has had feelings for Wade and did not Wade had feelings for her too and definitely not aware of him being attracted to men too. Could these 3 really have a relationship and how would that even work. This book kept you turning the pages all the way to the end. Love it and Kristen is such a great writer.

This was another fab addition to the series and I love how the author used the forced proximity trope of being snowed in. Three friends are together and each is very different from the other. Bode is a professional snowboarder but he's got some mental health issues on his plate. Wade, a surgeon, is such a golden retriever character and secretly in love with Lucky. Lucky is an engineer and she's so cool. She is chasing her dream and is so strong about it. I really liked her hobby of erotic art and her confidence that came from that. Told in multiple POVs, I really felt I got to know the characters well, and that let me be fully engaged in how their journey would unfold. Expect to feel the chemistry and connection as these three fascinating characters explore the side effects of their being snowed in that ends in a wonderful HEA. Good fun!
I really enjoyed this book. In fact i Android in a little too much. Because I only meant to read a little bit and ended up reading the entire book very quickly, when I had tbr books that were supposed to have been read first. Oops.
This series is a fave because the characters are enjoyable and without a lot of angst. If you want dark romance, this is not the series.
The supporting characters are also generally good people.
This particular throuple had interesting characters that I would want to hang out with so it was a fun read for me.

A Field Guide to Wayward Roommates is a charming, spicy MMF why choose romance that blends heart and comedy into heartfelt emotional moments. I love how Kristin Lance balanced the humor and spice beautifully to create three characters that each bring their own distinct personality into the relationship. It was a refreshing read and something that I'd heavily suggest giving a chance if you are looking for a lighthearted yet steamy rom-com escape with emotional depth.

3,5 stars - An enjoyable why choose story with a female dom for a change! I liked that each character was very different and had their own struggles and internal conflicts they needed to address. I also liked that the story showed how it can be a challenge to bring families from different cultural backgrounds together. So why not more stars? Sometimes I got thrown out of the story coz some things didn't make sense. It happened only a couple of times, and hopefully with some edits that will be corrected.

I usually enjoy why choose & poly amory books... but I was a bit disappointed in this one. It seemed a bit more about the bi aspect and more about the 2 men instead of the 3 of them.
It was an interesting plot, but it lost me when it turned from 3 to the focus being on the 2 MM.
Thank you to the author, publisher & Booksprout for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

This story is a journey about three people with very different personalities who not only find each other, but they find themselves in the process. While there are definitely some spicy moments, it was the emotional depth and the thoughtful character arcs that really stood out to me. The author beautifully blends heat, heart, and personal growth.

A great story about finding that missing piece to your puzzle that just makes life make sense. Loved the messages about accepting yourself for who you are and not hiding it, and the messages about mental health and burnout and how to properly take care of yourself in that situation. The steamy interludes balanced out the heavier subjects and I really enjoyed the entire story.

While was nothing inherently wrong with I just don't like domme content in books I've tried it and I just don't like it. While as far as I got it was just in fmc's artwork I'm going to assume it would have translated into the dynamic between her and the guys and that's just a no for me other than that the rest of what I read was fine. I wish I would have known that that was a part of this book and I just would never have picked it up in the first place.
Seriously hot, deeply touching, and unexpectedly moving, with delicious spice! Ever wonder if your closest chosen family will stil love you after you let your freak flag fly? Finding out has rarely been so much fun! Love these guys, but love them even more together!.

These three are more than just friends. Bode is a pro snowboarder who is finding his fair share of issues and could use a nice change of pace (in the form of some good roommates). He gets the perfect protege (Wade), who comes with a friend, Lucky. She is the hot girl chasing her dream.
