The opening to this is strong and immediately hooked me, pulling me in and grabbing me without letting me go.
The level of detail in each sentence is so precise and lovingly written that the love for the craft of writing itself is palpable from page to page. Shreya’s love for her culture and retelling is also done with care and respect.
This was so enriching and magical. Emotionally evocative and you feel EVERYTHING Savitri goes through as if you’re truly in her shoes.
I love the subversions Shreya did that made this a strong retelling (I researched the original myth to get more background to appreciate and understand the work she put in and it’s glorious). I’m not as familiar with Indian stories as I’d like to be but I have read the Bhagavad Gita and a few other important texts. I think people will really love this. It’s such a rich world with fleshed out characters and I also love that Savitri is the warrior.
And without spoiling anything, her journey is really about finding herself and coming into her own and making her own decisions. She chooses herself after being the most selfless person and I read all of this in a day and my earc was over 500 pages lol.
It’s good, y’all.
I feel spoiled by all the good books I’ve gotten to arc lately and this one is probably one of my favorites if not completely up there. It will be hard to top this.
