Rate this book
Princess Savitri thought she could do it all - be the perfect daughter, perfect wife, perfect princess. But when the cruel prophecy foretelling her husband, Satyavan’s, doom becomes a reality after the dedication she spent praying for his salvation, Savitri is determined to prove fate wrong and rescue Satyavan.

Aided by Suman, a well-meaning but clumsy archer with mysteries of his own, the two journey through the dangerous roads to Naraka, the Land of the Dead. Encountering dangerous animals, vengeful gods, and tragedies beyond comprehension force Savitri to acknowledge the feelings she'd been taught to bury under her perfect princess facade.

As her identity is challenged by these obstacles, and her feelings for Suman change from animosity to something she'd rather not acknowledge, Savitri is left wondering if saving Satyavan is worth losing herself.

As far as Indian mythology is concerned, we all know the tale of Savitri, a wife who brought her husband back from the God of Death himself. She tricked him into granting her the one thing that would not be possible without her husband: a child. But what if asking for a child with her husband didn’t mean the husband she had lost but a husband she was meant to have in the future?

Synopsis:

Savitri is grieving the death of her husband of one year, who was taken from her because of a curse. Unable to accept her fate, she sets out on a quest to save her husband’s soul from Dharmaraja, the God of Death himself, and right the wrong that was done to her.

While on her quest, she meets a young man not more than three years older than her, who admires her and offers to help her on her quest with the blessings of Sage Durvasa, his guru. Will Savitri be able to save Satyavan from Dharmaraja? Or will she have to accept her fate in the end?

Review:

“Saving Satyavan” by Shreya Northern is a myth retelling of the famous Hindu myth of Savitri, a wife who tricked even the God of Death into giving her husband back through her determination.

I loved how the twist to the story was written so beautifully that I wished it were true. We have all admired Savitri for her courage, determination, and devotion to her husband, which led to her getting him back from the most feared God of Death himself. But have we ever thought about what would have happened if she had accepted her fate and found someone who actually admired, loved, and respected her more than Satyavan ever did?

This story takes you through a tale of just that, where Savitri, on her quest, falls for her companion, who goes through hell (literally) for her to help her complete what she started.

Suman, the man that he is, is strong yet soft, brave yet scared, and he never backs down from doing anything and everything for Savitri. He makes her feel her worth and helps her understand that she is more than just a princess, just a wife, or just a daughter—she is Savitri. He walks beside her while annoying her as she grieves her husband and never once makes her feel guilty for it.

And Savitri—she is strong, determined, and confident. She refuses to bow before even the gods because she knows she has been wronged. I admired her courage, her ability to fight, and her determination to get her husband back.

Their chemistry was instant, their arguments were enjoyable, and their banter was unmistakable. I was laughing, giggling, and kicking my feet while also holding my breath at the same time.

The settings of the quest were written beautifully, with most of the elements making it feel as if we were walking beside the two of them. The threats felt real, the challenges felt difficult to overcome, and the emotions felt inevitable. Every action scene made my heart race, every threat had me holding my breath, and when they both finally accepted what had already been planned, it felt so unreal and heartfelt.

This story had a great message in it too: “God’s plan is always better than what you have planned for yourself.”

Overall, this is a must-read for fans of Hindu mythology who enjoy stories with a little twist on the original, grumpy × sunshine banter, a love story that feels inevitable yet surreal, and a good amount of action and supernatural quests.

What if saving your husband meant losing yourself in the process? 😭📚

Saving Satyavan is a beautiful adventure-romance inspired by Hindu mythology that blends destiny, self-discovery, and unexpected love into an emotional journey that kept me invested from beginning to end ✨

Princess Savitri has spent her life trying to be perfect — the perfect daughter, the perfect wife, the perfect princess. But when a prophecy comes true and her husband Satyavan dies despite everything she did to prevent it, she refuses to accept fate’s decision 🖤

Determined to bring him back, Savitri embarks on a dangerous journey to the Land of the Dead. Along the way, she’s accompanied by Suman, a well-meaning but chaotic archer who quickly became one of my favorite parts of the story 🏹✨

The dynamic between Savitri and Suman is filled with tension, banter, forced proximity, and gradual emotional growth. Watching their relationship evolve from annoyance to something much deeper was incredibly satisfying 😭🖤

What I loved most was Savitri’s personal journey. Beneath the adventure and mythology is a story about identity, expectations, grief, and learning who you are beyond what others expect you to be.

The mythology, emotional stakes, and character development come together beautifully to create a story that feels both epic and deeply personal ✨

Thank you to the author, Shreya, for the ARC! 🩶

The opening to this is strong and immediately hooked me, pulling me in and grabbing me without letting me go.

The level of detail in each sentence is so precise and lovingly written that the love for the craft of writing itself is palpable from page to page. Shreya’s love for her culture and retelling is also done with care and respect.

This was so enriching and magical. Emotionally evocative and you feel EVERYTHING Savitri goes through as if you’re truly in her shoes.

I love the subversions Shreya did that made this a strong retelling (I researched the original myth to get more background to appreciate and understand the work she put in and it’s glorious). I’m not as familiar with Indian stories as I’d like to be but I have read the Bhagavad Gita and a few other important texts. I think people will really love this. It’s such a rich world with fleshed out characters and I also love that Savitri is the warrior.

And without spoiling anything, her journey is really about finding herself and coming into her own and making her own decisions. She chooses herself after being the most selfless person and I read all of this in a day and my earc was over 500 pages lol.

It’s good, y’all.

I feel spoiled by all the good books I’ve gotten to arc lately and this one is probably one of my favorites if not completely up there. It will be hard to top this.

So proud of you, Shreya!
