About the author

I've been writing as long as I can remember and all of my stories always held a thread of romance (even when I was writing about a prince who could shoot lasers out of his eyes). I love creating unique characters, love giving them happy endings and I even love the voices in my head. There's no other job I would rather be doing. In September 2002, when I got the call that Silhouette Desire wanted to buy my first book, Desert Warrior, it was a dream come true. I hope to continue living the dream until I keel over of old age on my keyboard.


I was born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand. I also spent three years living and working in Japan, during which time I took the chance to travel around Asia. So far, I've worked as a lawyer, a librarian, a candy factory general hand, a bank temp and an English teacher and not necessarily in that order. Some might call that inconsistency but I call it grist for the writer's mill.

I'm so excited, it's finally happening!

Amara has always been a favorite of mine ever since her introduction in Hostage to Pleasure. I love the complex relationship she has with her sister and the Darkriver pack. I hoped Amara would get her own book but didn't think it would happen since it's been so long since her introduction.

And don't even get me started on Pax Marshall, I have been waiting for his book since the Scarabs were introduced. Every new book that's announced my best friend and I discuss who we think it will be and I've been saying that I hope its Pax's book every time- finally it is!

This will likely be my favorite book in this series, thank you Nalini ♡

There is nothing about the newest book in Nalini Singh’s fantastic Psy-Changeling Trinity series. It’s a story full of surprising warmth and much needed hope, centered on two unlikely heroes: a self-proclaimed psychopath with obsessive tendencies and a man with a ravening madness slowly but surely stealing his life. Whatever expectations I had for this book, they were exceeded by sheer dint of the fact it made me cry, made me feel, for a couple who shouldn’t have worked, who some may argue should never have been given their own book in the first place.

The sheer scope of Singh’s Psy-Changeling world is such that in order to fully appreciate this story, you’d benefit from reading—or re-reading—several of the books that have come before it, starting with Hostage to Pleasure, the fourth book in the original Psy-Changeling series, in which our FMC is first introduced… as the villain. Of course, I didn’t just re-read the one book, nor did I stop at re-reading Wolf Rain, Resonance Surge, Storm Echoand Primal Mirror, all of which feed into the Scarab storyline and establish who Amara Aleine and Pax Marshall are. Instead, I re-read the entire series—over two dozen books and novellas—because I need very little inducement to do so. This is my favorite series by my favorite author, after all.

This is both a very different and very much the same book when looked at alongside all the others. Similar in the familiar faces—we are spoiled with cameos galore—and the storyline that resonates despite its paranormal nature; in the intricate world-building that expands with every story but never forgets where it started; in the emotion that permeates each page as all the pieces come together to propel the series forward, answering questions, but asking them too.

And different? Well, Cold Redemption takes two Psy who are fundamentally broken—typically, at least one of a pair has a foundation of goodness or feeling to build on—and asks the question what if we can be better? Singh doesn’t shy from the dark places in either character, but also gives them depths unexpected, pasts that are heartbreaking in different ways, and stilted but genuine moments of growth. They come more alive with every interaction, every fumbling moment of feeling, every painful flashback, and every formal footstep away from Silence. And yet, they remain who they always were: a little bit crazy, haunted by “the badness”, obsessive, and stalked by ghosts of Grandfathers past. Two brilliant, bent-but-not-broken minds that find emotion together—good and bad—because of their flaws, not in spite of them.

I could not put this book down because I wanted to know how it would all play out, what the answers would end up being, and whether redemption is possible, cold or otherwise. I don’t regret reading it quickly, but I am sorry it’s over—I enjoyed my time with Pax and Amara far more than I anticipated. And Cold Redemption does read a little like the Trinity arc is close to wrapping up, there are still questions left unanswered, characters yet to find their mate or their comeuppance, and readers (like me) who want and need more, so I’ll wait with bated breath for whatever comes next—and maybe do another massive re-read in the meantime.

When I read Nalini's newsletter announcing that the main couple was Pax and Amara, I immediately began stalking NetGalley. Like, how does this even work????

I think my feelings about the Trinity arc have been well-documented so I went into this very skeptically. Like, I had kinda come around after reading Atonement Sky and realizing why I struggled with the arc, but there's been a lot of crazy stuff happening in this arc. How on Earth was Nalini going to pull off taking a well-established psychopathic character and making her into a believable romantic heroine? The relationship between Theo and Pax showed that Pax is not really devoid of all humanity, so I wasn't as concerned about him, but he is, after all, terminally ill.

So there were two very major obstacles that Nalini had to overcome to make me buy into this.

It probably comes as no surprise that I ended up going all-in. Is this my favorite book in the Trinity arc? No. That honor probably rests with Last Guard. Is typing up this review making me want to re-read Cold Redemption again? Hell yes. I've actually been scrolling through the book and I'm going to put a quote behind spoilers, which I think illustrates Nalini's genius. It's towards the end of the book:

"I'm not the best person to ask," Amara said. "The best I can do is suggest that you put her into a permanent light sedation--but that probably doesn't line up with your ethics."

"I'd do it," Pax said with a shrug. "But Theo..."

Amara's gaze was far more open than it had been the rest of this day when she looked at him. "It's a problem having a sibling with a conscience."

One of the things I loved the most about the Psy-Changeling series is how Nalini would seed things in and the plot point would bloom later on. Okay, I'm going to talk about the relationship now, so I'm going to stick it another spoiler cut. There's Scarab stuff happening while the relationship is developing, but to me, the point of the book is Pax and Amara, so spoilers.


Nalini makes Pax and Amara work, not by dramatic changes to their personalities or "fixing" them, but by building on what's already been established.

We know from Hostage to Pleasure that a) Amara experiences emotions via her mental connection with Ashaya and b) her perceived "evilness" drops away when she's no longer exposed to the corrupted PsyNet. We know from Wolf Rain that Amara is undergoing therapy with Memory and Sasha. The therapy is not necessarily intended to make her something other than a psychopath (I honestly think Amara is more of a sociopath, but Nalini refers to her as a psychopath in the book), but to make her cognizant of how her actions affect those around her. There's also a mention of how Amara started seeing her colleagues as people in their own right. So the building blocks for Amara to develop an emotional connection to Pax have already been established.

Pax, on the other hand, would have been a cinnamon roll type of hero, if his abusive grandfather hadn't beaten it out of him. Despite the abuse, despite Silence, despite his mental abilities depending on rock solid control, he cares so much. We see it in Wolf Rain when he realizes he is a danger to people and breaks down his conditioning to ask for help. We see it in Resonance Surge when we see more of his relationship with Theo. Despite dealing with Scarab Syndrome himself, he tries so hard to protect and comfort the other victims. Once he learns about the rehabilitation clinics, he works to create a better life for those victims too.

So what happens when a gradient 10 telepath who is desperately trying to take care of everyone before he dies meets a woman who becomes fascinated by the scientific challenge he presents and, gradually, by extension, him?

Magic happens, that's what.

Amara gives Pax someone who understands the darker parts of his soul, the hard choices he had to make to keep the majority safe. She doesn't judge him for those choices because she'd probably have made the same ones. Pax gives Amara another emotional connection, but unlike Ashaya who felt smothered by Amara's need, Pax wants to feel the connection, he wants to feel needed. So he's all in and now she's experiencing new emotions that she's not entirely sure what to do with, but thanks to her therapy, she's open to the possibilities. She chooses him.

Here's another quote from the beginning of chapter 45 that illustrates this:

"It appears Sascha continues to be right--to beat the badness, I must make conscious choice after conscious choice.

"It was a lot easier when it didn't hurt."

I mean, COME ON. How do you not root for a self-aware person who knows they are psychologically messed up, but continues to choose to be better?



I'm done with the relationship talk now. So yes, be sure you read Mine to Possess, Wolf Rain, and Resonance Surge before you pick up Cold Redemption. It probably wouldn't hurt to also read Storm Echo just for the Scarab stuff, but the important character stuff is in the other three books.

I get the sense we are nearing the end of the Trinity arc, which makes me nervous, because despite my issues with the arc, I don't want to say goodbye to these characters. Yet I'm also hopeful that maybe we will be returning to the concept of a brighter future. I want books featuring the next generation, starting with Kit. Fingers crossed!

Cold Redemption has left me spectacularly wrecked and exquisitely overjoyed! There is nothing more utterly perfect then the absolutely incredible characters within this phenomenal journey who miraculously transformed the lives of those they touched around them by allowing their heart to lead them. Those in need went from a whimper of confusion and need to a confident shout of joy and hope that resonated to everyone they came in contact with. The shock of sizzling chemistry and the overwhelming urge to fix became a life changing mantra that completely healed and utterly transformed not only those they loved, but it also became a catalyst that slowly yet methodically shored up a failing system that took their own people from the brink of annihilation to a brand new beginning that held extraordinary potential and unending promise.

Pax Marshall knows his time is limited, but his hope is to find a cure for those who suffer like him. He is determined to find something that will help to cure or at least sooth the pain of those whose suffering is a tremendous threat not only to themselves but to those around them. If he could solve their problem with his unlimited wealth or out of sheer will, he would have already done it a hundred times over. Amara Aleine was born perfect by some standards and yet severely broken by most. She is not suited to work with people other then her twin who knows her inside and out and yet still loves her. Her strength comes from the powerhouse of a clean and methodical mind of pure science. More then anyone, she is the only hope that Pax has in finding a cure. Will Pax prove to be her undoing and ultimate demise since her ego has never met a problem or challenge that she couldn't best, or will this partnership push her condition to the point of no return?

Amara finds herself eager to meet this new challenge that she her sister have agreed to take on. This is a challenge like no other in her life, and she is determined to solve it like a fun new puzzle that will require full commitment and hyper focus. However, when Pax's life is threatened and Amara has a chance to take a big step toward her new normal, she finds that what follows is anything but the expected. Watching her and Pax adjust to their new crazy normal felt more fluid and natural then I would have ever guessed possible. The only reason that they were able to work like this was because of their existing relationship with their twin. Both have a twin sister, so they understood the link and bond that developed between them while not normal was not unfamiliar or something completely foreign to them. Pax and Amara took each step with such a natural flow that there was never a misstep between them which allowed Amara to better monitor her patient and Pax a chance to experience a type of love that he never knew outside of his fierce love and devotion toward his sister.

The progression of their shocking and unorthodox love made this story sumptuously decadent and extraordinarily satisfying. I was not expecting the wonder and awe of their growing connection and tender bond in light of who they are and where they came from. However, watching them learn this strange yet satisfying dance was beautiful to behold in its honesty and vulnerability. I must admit that any story crafted by Nalini Singh is one that is sure to wondrously delight and undeniably transform any reader who discovers it. Her precious books are incredibly transformative and exceptionally moving. For the rest of my life, I will never grow tired of savoring the beautiful pieces of her heart, infusing into my heart the sense of community and love highlighted by her incredible characters, and enjoying the depth and breath of her fascinating worlds that only grow in their splendor and mystery.

Every time I pick up a new book in this series, I am reminded how much I absolutely love it and why it remains one of my favorites. We return to this world and it’s Amara’s story! I never imagined we would get Amara’s story. We met her in the early days of this series before Trinity and I gotta say what a change it has been. Amara has grown so much in this series and in this book specifically. I loved getting to know her and to see just how much she has changed. And for her to fall for Pax? Wow! I adored these two. So, we find Amara and Pax at the center of the Scarab issue. With Pax being Patient Zero. Pax knows he is running out of time. But his twin won’t give up on him. Not after they were finally reunited. And Pax won’t give up yet either but they need some major help. And who better to tackle the impossible task than Amara and her own twin? With Amara taking point, she is always up for a challenge. She just never imagined it becoming so personal. Pax understands her more than any, including her twin, has ever understood her. His mind is beautiful and she finds him interesting, when so little holds her attention. And after so much time around E’s and the work they have done with her? She may just be in a position to fall for someone. Not that she would call it that just yet. And for Pax, his connection to Amara is one he has never felt with anyone. And the more they work together, the more he feels. He won’t let go. Not yet. But can they solve this puzzle before his time is up? Loved it. We get so many familiar faces in this story. And like I said, I was so intrigued to see Amara get a book and it was absolutely perfect for her. Another amazing book in this series. And I cannot not wait to see what is coming next!

As someone who has never read any of Nalini Singhs works before, I admit I was a little nervous going into this book. I've of course come across her books in the wild (the wild being the library or B&N) and have always been curious about jumping into the worlds she creates, but I've always felt slightly intimidated about jumping in because of how many books she's written in this universe.
When I came across this book on NetGalley, I was super intrigued with the book summary and decided to take the leap.
I am very glad I finally leapt.
Singh wonderfully weaves world knowledge/information into her books, I didn't feel like I was missing critical information as a first time reader of her works and I was able to fully enjoy this reading experience.
I loved watching the relationship between Pax and Amara form and getting to read about Amara growing and learning who she is becoming. Amara is typically the type of character I have a harder time relating to bc I 100% would consider myself an empathetic person who picks up on peoples moods or emotional being, but I found myself loving her and her logical mind. I adored Pax bc he didn't try to change Amara and just accepted the reality of who she was, who she is, and who she becomes.
Their approach to intimacy was very healthy, and my only wish is that we got more of those scenes.

I adore Amara and Pax. Two perfectly imperfect halves of one whole. They found the one person who would understand them and it made me so happy. I've been dying to know what would happen with Amara since Ashayas book and I'm soo happy and satisfied with how everything turned out for her. And Pax, I can't think of anyone more deserving of this love after a lifetime of brainwashing and abuse from his grandfather. My little heart was breaking during pax' flashbacks. I can't handle it when innocent bb psy get hurt and no one rescues them 😭 he finally found someone to stand by his side in Amara.
These two are perfect for each other. And the way pax loves this women and she loves him (in her own way) 😭

It was all of that and it was more—it was adoration, obsession, love, and it was friendship, loyalty, fidelity.

I was so excited for this book and it did not disappoint. We had previously met Amara Aliene, a Psy scientist and known psychopath, in earlier books of the series. She's tasked with finding a cure for the Scarab Syndrome. Pax Marshall is patient zero, and volunteers to be her test subject. They find they have much in common, and embark on a relationship.

It was so interesting being in Amara's head, and seeing how much progress she's made in her life. She's been working with the empath's and now recognizes her previous way of thinking was wrong. I loved seeing her connect with Pax, and that they both truly saw each other. Their journey into intimacy was so clinical and Psy like, it was humorous. Only Amara would analyze the act of sex to the degree she did.

I liked how much more we learned about Pax, and really saw what he went through. In previous books he was only known as a stone cold silent business man. There was actually a lot of depth to him. His determination to be better than his horrible grandfather was admirable.

The healing of Amara's relationship with Ashaya was wonderful, and I loved being able to catch up with characters in the SnowDancer and DarkRiver packs. I truly enjoyed the book and the world Nalini has created. I want to thank Berkeley Publishing and NetGalley for the copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to leave a review.

I've been waiting for this one, and it absolutely delivered. Nalini Singh continues to prove why the Psy-Changeling series remains one of my all-time favorites.

One of the biggest strengths of this book is the characters. I loved spending time with them, watching their relationship develop, and seeing how perfectly they fit into the larger world of the series. Singh has an incredible talent for creating emotionally complex characters that are easy to become invested in, and this story was no exception.

The balance of romance, suspense, and ongoing series development kept me turning the pages. It was wonderful to revisit familiar faces while also getting a deeper look at characters I've been eager to know better. The world continues to evolve in meaningful ways without ever losing the heart that made me fall in love with the series in the first place.

If you're already a fan of the Psy-Changeling series, this is another fantastic installment that won't disappoint. I loved every minute of it and can't wait to see where the series goes next. Highly recommended!

Nalini Singh is an auto-buy author for me. I love this series and have read every single book in it. When I heard that Amara Leine and Pax Marshall were the the main characters for Cold Redemption, I was a little taken back. Amara is so cold and only feels anything at all about her twin sister. Pax is the classic cold psy despite his twin sister. But while I was unsure how this book would come together, I had no doubts at all in Nalini Singh's ability to pull off an excellent read.

I want to make it very clear that these characters didn't change into emotional beings who fell all over each other. No these characters experienced something that shifted their world view just enough to feel things for the other while keeping true to their personality. Nalini Singh does not force her characters, she puts them in situations that allow them to experience growth and have us marveling at them.

Amara was drawn to Pax's clean, orderly beautiful mind. Pax was desperate and willing to endure work with Amara to find a cure for Scarab Syndrome. Not for himself but for those he cares about, his scarabs. As they spend time with each other, their are cracks in each others cold shell. It happens slowly as you would expect for these character. This author is a master at crafting the right story for every character. Amara and Pax are still themselves, I was amazed.

I enjoyed the world this story is set in. Most of the time we are in the Snowdancer or Dark River territory so a lot of my favorite characters make appearances. It's always a homecoming for me to see those characters that I fell in love with in previous stories. It's a credit to this author that this world holds so many wonderful stories and never gets old.

This author has a great writing style that I enjoy reading. The balance between romance and plot is always perfect for the couple. I enjoyed the banter between these two. Amara needs her space and isn't shy about getting it. It was fun seeing her put in uncomfortable (for her) situations. Pax is dying and he's not holding back. It was a great mix that surprised me.

If you love this series, don't be afraid to dive into this one, you will love it. If you have never experienced the Psy-chanllenge world, I have great news for you! There are a lot of excellent books to enjoy in this amazing series.

This book was everything I wanted. Two Psy MCs who are still figuring out who they are in a post-Silence world, interesting family dynamics, twins!, and of course a few check-ins with my favorite changeling friends. I have been waiting for years for Amara's book and was worried we'd never get one but Pax was worth the wait.
First up— Amara who is not anymore (but maybe?) a psychopath, still lacking in many emotions, kind of still obsessed with her twin and oh yeah has to find the cure to Scarab Syndrome.
Then there's Pax who has Scarab Syndrome, is maybe the alpha of the Scarabs?, tying to rebrand the Marshall image after everything his grandfather did during Silence and oh yeah he's got a few weeks left to live.
I loved everything about this story I never wanted it to end. The twin bonds were great, the changelings we got to see from SnowDancer and DarkRiver were so fun and I'm also so curious which book will be next I can't wait!

In this book we finally get an answer to 2 questions that have likely occurred to readers who have enjoyed this series. What will happen to Pax and what will become of Amara? Pairing those two together made for a fascinating read. 2 characters who considered themselves a danger to others have to learn how to function despite their flaws.

I have always been a big fan of Nalini Singh, despite the fact that I don't typically care for romances. Her worldbuilding, characters and pacing make for wonderful books and all of them (especially in this series) build on each other. Singh is a expert at taking a small fact or minor character mentioned maybe several books ago and fleshing them out gradually book by book until they are ready for a book of their own. Singh is in a class of her own and this book makes for another fantastic edition to her Psy Changeling World.

I've been waiting for this book for a solid... fifteen books, and I do think Amara's story was handled a lot more deftly than I thought Singh would. I've commented in previous books that the series has shifted focus from romance to world issues, and that remains true, but it works better with Amara and Pax due to their limited emotionality.

That said, I struggle to see where the world goes from here - in this novel Singh appears to have resolved the last lingering conflicts in this society, and given the time line of the books (note: which is wild actually) none of the second generation characters are going to be viable for another 25 books...
