About the author

Ravish Kumar is an Indian TV anchor, writer and journalist who covers topics pertaining to Indian politics and society.
He was born in a small district called "East Champaran" with its headquarters at Motihari, in Eastern State of India, Bihar. He studied at Loyola High School, Patna , and later on he moved to Delhi for his higher studies. He graduated from University of Delhi and received a post-graduate diploma in Journalism from the Indian Institute of Mass Communication. He published a book named देखते रहिये ("Dekhte Rahiye") in 2010. His next book, titled "इश्क़ में शहर होना" ("Ishq Mein Shahar Hona") was published by Rajkamal Publishers in 2015. He also writes articles for a number of daily and weekly news and literary publications in Hindi, several of which are also published on his website. He has received the prestigious Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Award for Hindi Journalism and Creative Literature for 2010 from the President of India (awarded in 2014). He was honoured with the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Award for the Journalist of the Year 2013 (Broadcast). He has also won the Indian news television award 2014 for Best News anchor in Hindi

'एनडीटीवी वाला रवीश' के नाम से विख्यात रवीश कुमार सिर्फ पत्रकारिता ही नही मगर लेखनी में भी काफी रोचक अंदाज़ रखते है। उनके एंकरिंग करने का ढंग नायब एवं काफी नवीन है। कुछ इसी तरीके से उन्होंने अपनी 'प्रेम की लघुतम कहानियों' की नई एक शैली इज़ाद करने की कोशिश करी है जिसको लप्रेक नाम दिया गया है। गुलज़ार की त्रिवेणी और अब रविश की लप्रेक, हिंदी भी काफी प्रयोगात्मक भाषा है जनाब! फेसबुक स्टेटस के द्वारा अपनी लेखनी साझा करते करते रविश की ये शैली बनी और उसका मिला-जुला रूप है 'इश्क़ में शहर होना'। फेसबुक फिक्शन श्रृंखला के रूप में प्रस्तुत की गयी यह किताब करीब ९० छोटी-छोटी कहानियां बयान करती है। कहानी तो क्या है, बस कुछ एहसास है और शब्दों का चालाकी भरा उपयोग कुछ मनभावन दृष्टान्त रचते है। मगर अफ़सोस यह कला फेसबुक पर ही ज्यादा दिलचस्प लगती है। पल भर का मनोरंजन और हलकी सी मुस्कराहट, बस बन गयी बात। मगर किताब के रूप में अगर देखा जाए तो कहानियों पर थोड़ा सा काम और होना बनता था। खासकर की उन लोगो के लिए जो दिल्ली, या कहें की दक्षिण दिल्ली से वाक़िफ़ नही है। जगह और उसके एहसास पर कई कहानियाँ है जो 'नोन-देल्हिऐट्स' के लिए समझना थोड़ा मुश्किल होगा। बहरहाल जनाब ने दिल्ली को एक अलग ही अंदाज़ में पेश किया है, जिसे ज़ाहिर है की उनका लगाव इस शहर से इश्क़नुमा है। रविश की दिल्ली खुशवंत सिंह या फिर विलियम डारिम्पल की दिल्ली से अल्हदा है। इनकी अपनी एक माशूक़ है जो हर दिल्ली के नौजवान की होती है।
किताब सिर्फ रविश-अंदाज़-प्रेमी या 'हार्ड-कोर-दिल्ली-फैंस' के लिए है। बाकी के पाठक निराश हो सकते है, और कई इसी सोच में हैरान पड़े रह सकते है की हिंदी का इस्तेमाल इतना क्रांतिकारी कैसे हो सकता है, बेहद क्रांतिकारी टाइप्स वाला!

Experimental genre of extremely small stories of 4-5 lines each, all about Delhi and its romantic youth couples.
Frankly I found it meh! One extra star for the illustrations for each story, which were good. But not quite good enough to be compiled as a book.
Reco: Avoidable! Delhites may slightly like it...

इश्क में शहर होना। बड़ी उम्मीद थी इस किताब से। कुछ रेखाचित्त्रो को छोड़ कर कुछ याद नहीं रहता इस किताब से। एक ही बात, एक सी बात हर पन्ने पर। अधूरी बातें, अस्पष्ट बातें, बेतुकी बातें। सतही और बेकार सी।
बिल्कुल मज़ा नहीं आया। था क्या यह?

I am a fan of Ravish Kumar of NDTV prime time fame.

I bought this book from Amazon purely based on his name.

These are called laprek i.e. Laghu prem Katha. One page stories set in Delhi.

I read the stories and didn't like them much. They have no plot except some names of Delhi's localities.

Maybe i am not able to understand the context or the hidden message.

Still didn't work for me.

Some books should not be translated at all.Ishq mein shaher hona is one of them.The essence of most of the micro stories is gone.The book is only enjoyable in moments and the stories seem fake when read in English.After all Delhi is in India and most of the characters in the book don't speak English.It was a literary crime to translate the book in English.No one should waste his or her hard earned money and invaluable time on this rubbish English translation.Read the original Hindi version or don't read it at all.

रवीश कुमार कह रहे है, किताब जितनी मेरी है उतनी ही विक्रम नायक की भी है| जब किताब खोली तो विक्रम नायक सबसे पीछे दिखाई दिए तो मैंने उन्हें आगे करते हुए, पीछे से किताब पढ़ना शुरू किया|

यूँ क़ुतुब मीनार पर दूरबीन लगी है, इश्क़ दूर जाना चाहता है, दूर तलक जाना चाहता है|

किताब शुरुआत में जंतर मंतर सी लगती है और अन्ना महसूस होते हैं लवपाल की चाहत मेट्रो सी लगती है| जब मेट्रो वैशाली के जंगल में प्रवेश करती है मंगल कलश के बराबर रखा दीपक उम्मीद सा लगता है| बारीकी से पकड़ा गया है, उस वैशाली से इस वैशाली तक का सफ़र|

अन्ना, रैली, मीडिया पुरानी दिल्ली और नई दिल्ली के बीच प्रेम पसीज रहा है| प्रेम का झंडा छितरा रहा है, दिमाग का पर्चा उड़ रहा है मगर जोड़ा नहीं बन पा रहा है| मैं अभिभूत हूँ अभिव्यक्ति पर|

बाइक वाला चित्र गूगल ग्लास हो गया है| साऊथ दिल्ली आँखों में बस गयी है और बाइक हकीकत की ओर जा रही है| साथ जा रहे है मगर साथ भी तो नहीं जा रहे, मगर जो तो रहे ही हैं| जोरबाग छूट रहा है, मगर दिल्ली मुड़ कर भी तो नहीं देखने देती| दिल्ली शतरंज ही तो नहीं है, दिल्ली में प्यादे नहीं खेलते|
दिल्ली की निगाहें आपको देखती नहीं है तो अकेले भी तो नहीं छोड़तीं| सीसीटीवी कैमरे हों या ऑटो| दिल्ली एक पिंजड़ा ही तो है जिसे आप पकड़ना चाहते हो और जहाँ से आप उड़ जाना चाहते हो| दिल्ली जहाँ कोई आप नहीं आता मगर हर कोई देख लेना चाहता है|

कुल मिला कर दिल्ली के तमाम पुल फ्लाईओवर और मेट्रो दिल्ली को जोड़ ही नहीं पाते| दिल्ली दिल सी तो लगती है मगर रहती दिल्ली ही है| दिल ऑटो सा छोटा है, फुर्र हो जाना चाहता है|

मैं विक्रम नायक की नजर से दिल्ली देख रहा हूँ| उनकी दिल्ली इश्क़ नहीं है, दिल्ली इश्क़ हो जाना चाहती है| मैं आखिरी चित्र तक पहुँच गया हूँ| दिल्ली शहर नहीं दिल्ली हो गई है| यह चित्र विक्रम नायक की दिल्ली का भव्य दुखद प्रारूप है| मैं इस चित्र एक अलग किताब की घुटन महसूस करता हूँ, मगर यही एक कौने ने रवीश कुमार अपने हस्ताक्षर कर देते हैं| यहाँ मेट्रो की आवाजाही में प्रेम लप्रेक हो रहा है| मुखपृष्ठ पर रवीश हाशिये पर है| आखिर जिस प्रेम को वो लिख रहें हैं, वो खुद हाशिये पर ही तो खड़ा है| रवीश कुमार का प्रेम करावल नगर सा ही महसूस हो रहा है| अब रवीश कुमार को पढूंगा मगर लिखूंगा नहीं| मैं बुराड़ी नहीं होना चाहता|

विक्रम नायक के लोगों के लिए किताब रोहिणी है, रवीश कुमार वालों के लिए द्वारिका| जिन्हें दोनों को पढ़ना है, उनके लिए जोरबाग| मगर पढ़ने से पहले अगर पैदल ही कनॉट प्लेस से चांदनी चौक का चक्कर लगा आयें, तो किताब रायसीना हिल्स सी लगने लगेगी|

Interesting experiment but as someone said, what works on FB doesn't work that well when compiled as a book. Requirement to have at least 70-80 pages makes the collection feel repetitive. Some stories and some sketches are lovely.

Many stories make little sense for someone not familiar with Delhi. A map of Delhi or a brief introduction to localities mentioned would have been really useful. Leaving out some of the stories and instead including "Locality Varnan" would have made the title more fun and accessible at the same time.

But the concept is enticing. I would still read another if one comes out based in Bangalore.

हिन्दी भाषा में भी प्रयोग की एक प्रयोगशाला लगी - इश्क़ में शहर होना। दरअसल फेसबुक पर लिखे स्टेटस से लगने वाले अहसासों को उतारकर करीब 90 नन्ही-नन्ही कहानियों, बल्कि कहानी भी कुछ बड़ी होती ही है इसलिए कहना चाहिए इन्हीं करीब 90 नन्हे-नन्हे अहसासों को अपनी ही अलग लेखन शैली में न्यूनतम शब्दों में जोड़कर एक नन्ही पुस्तक का सृजन किया है जो फेसबुक फिक्शन श्रृंखला का एक हिस्सा है। इस श्रृंखला को 'लप्रेक' नाम दिया गया है यानी लघु-प्रेम-कथा।

पुस्तक में लेखन शैली तो बेहद पसंद आई लेकिन मूल रूप से यह दिल्ली के भीतर इसके विभिन्न कोनों और प्रसिद्ध स्मारकों एवं हिस्सों पर प्रस्फुटित होते प्रेम-प्रसंगों के छोटे-छोटे कैनवास उकेरती हैं और किसी बाहरी निवासी या यों कहें किसी ऐसे शख़्स जो दिल्ली से रूबरू न हो, के लिए यह बेहद कठिन हो जाती है क्योंकि इस कैनवास के रंग उसकी समझ से कुछ पर हो जाते हैं। यानी यह पुस्तक मुख्य रूप से एक दिल्लीवासी के लिए है। हाँ, दिल्ली जो इस पुस्तक में है वो उन तमाम दिल्लीओं से अलग है जो अन्य लेखकों ने अपनी-अपनी पुस्तकों में दिखाई है, किन्तु फिर भी यह दिल्ली सिर्फ कल्पना न होकर वाकई वैसी है जैसी असल दिल्ली है।

कहानियों में शब्दों की माँग कुछ और थी और जो लेखक ने शायद इसलिए कम रखी क्यूँकि यह कहानियाँ न होकर अहसास मात्र थे। हर अहसास के साथ विक्रम नायक की चित्रकारी उसे कुछ और गहराई देने की अच्छी कोशिश लगी। पुस्तक के प्रारंभ में प्रस्तावना के तौर पर दिया गया 'शहर का किताब बनना' किसी भी कहानी (अहसास) से ज्यादा अच्छा लगा। आपको पढ़ने के लिए कहना तभी चाहूँगा गर आप दिल्लीवासी हों।

रवीश की पत्रकारिता फॉलो करते हैं, तो सोचा ये भी देख लिया जाए. लेकिन वो बात नहीं है. या तो हमारी समझ में नहीं आया, या निहायत ही उबाऊ है. अच्छी बात ये की छोटी किताब है, तो ज्यादा देर नहीं उबियाएगी. कई दोहराव हैं, या यूँ कहिये की अधिकतर में एक ही जैसी बातें कही जा रही हैं. भीड़ में एकांत, लोगों की निगाहें और ट्रैफिक, इन्ही के इर्द गिर्द घूमती हैं सारी प्रेम कथाएँ. कई बार तो समझ ही नहीं आता की कहना क्या चाह रहे हैं, और कई बार ये लगता है की जान बूझ के मुश्किल बना रहे हैं चीजों को. बहुत सारे रेफरेन्सेस हैं जिनका मतलब समझ नहीं आता. कुछ रेखाचित्र अच्छे बन पड़े हैं.

रवीश को फॉलो करते हैं तो पढ़ लीजिये, लेकिन कुछ ख़ास है नहीं. 80 रूपया भी मंहगा ही लग रहा है हमको तो इस किताब के लिए. रवीश पत्रकारिता ही करें तो बेहतर!

Love, lover and the city. Ravish's book is a unique experiment of telling love stories in the backdrop of a city (Delhi). All stories are less than 100 words small and had been written in social media style writing. Some stories give really deep insights into the city locations and what they mean to the lovers. The book mainly focuses on middle class lovers and their social and economical background. But somehow I felt that the stories are victims of their limited format style and fail to set enough context or impact to the readers.
PS: I'm not a Delhiite, the book may mean and speak something totally different to them.

it is hard to relate to this book if you are not familiar with Delhi. I am not and did not enjoy it much. A lot of it is about 2 lovers finding space to be alone with each other.

Unlike Ravish, I've lived in cities all my life. To fall in love in a city is inextricably linked to falling in love with the city. For most of my life, that city has been Kolkata (it was ticklish to find the story set in Prince Anwar Shah Road, a stretch I've frequented almost regularly for the last six years).

One also longs for cities. Six months in Pune encapsulated, as my partner-in-sharing-Pune put it, "the wingspan of a life". When you know you're going to leave a city, the last few weeks become a longing in itself - like being in the arms of your lover and longing for them.

Cities compare poorly with each other, but the weak heart cannot help it. A city without "parental guidance" (which may have nothing to do with parents) opens up differently. A city visited only twice, on two separate days, once for templehopping with relatives and once for citywalking and seagazing with a dear friend, becomes two cities, two spaces in the heart.

Loving in cities is also loving in the face of a spycam. I like the fact that Ravish acknowledges this, but ultimately does not bow down to its dictums.

The writing is really good in bits. It's the artwork, however, that lends the book some real weight.

This book written by Ravish Kumar is a new concept of writing. Written in a story form compiled in small paragraphs. After reading i realised it could have been more elaborative and had abrupt endings as if each story wanted to tell more, all based on places in Delhi maybe because the title itself declares "Ishq mai sheher hona" meant falling in love with one city or falling in love with someone in one of the cities.
Moreover each story abstracts new generation's inclination towards love.
The book did justice to its title, but was abrupt in few of its writings yet one can give it a try if they are into new forms of writing, it is concise and maybe will make you travel back in time to "Delhi".

A few pages into the book, I realised that it is intended for a very specific set of audience.
You have to be a Delhiite, or more specifically, someone who knows the city through and through. (I am a Delhiite, yet I have no clue how does one reach Ghaziabad from Ghazipur) You should have also had a relationship and the freedom to roam around the city during the college days (when you're managing romance on a limited budget). Otherwise, the references just don't make any sense.
Some of the stories are quite straight forward while the others are too abstract to understand. Furthermore, there's no distinction between the dialogues and sentences.
A couple of times it happened that, as soon as I started getting invested in a story, it ended. The book is not capable of holding your attention for long, and after a point of time, you are bored of the "need" of the lovers in a sheher.
There lacks a common thread binding all the stories together.
It took me a while to understand that not all the Laprek are Delhi-based. And the use of Hindi transcription for English and Bangla words made it further confusing.
The positives? The stories aren't pretentious or far-fetched. Also, the amazing art that accompanies each Katha!
To be honest, the format was better suited for social media postings (which was where they were original put up). As a book? Not too sure if it works.

I really really admire Ravish as a ideal Superb journalist with his prime time face and superbly witty and truthful interview. This book is far away from politics and hatred. It is about dil walo ki dilli. though, I am quite a regular follower of his blog, this book comes out with the Idea of लप्रेक - लघु प्रेम कहानिया (Short Love Story) but the problem with the love stories depicted in the book are too short that it will end before it starts. The book is like a series of pictures which photographers clicks while roaming in the streets of Delhi. Best part is the sketches attached with every story and for fluent Hindi Readers, this can be completed within 2 3 hours.

Ishq main sheher hona! the title gives away the whole of the book. Each and every story is poetic and the metaphors that the writer has drawn throughout can be breathed by each one of us. The way Ravish Kumar has seen our city, and Vikram Nayak has penned every sketch, you feel the attachment, their penetration in Delhi and how deeply do they understand the pulse of the city. It's an easy-to-carry little pocket book which has a distinct voice and a strong imagery.

लघु प्रेम कथाएं या लप्रेक का अच्छा लगा, छोटी कहानियों के द्वारा रविश कुमार ने अपने परिचित अंदाज़ में लोगो का शहर हो जाना दर्शाया है। हलाकि कुछ कहानियां इतनी छोटी हैं की उनका मतलब आप समझ नहीं पते परन्तु सभी का भाव समझना कहीं भी मुश्किल नहीं लगता . I would not rate this book because,
1. I feel that every drop of essence of this book has been lost in translation.
2. Even though the original hindi edition might have been wonderful but I doubt even then whether I will be able to comprehend the version of "Love" the author is portraying. It seems too unworldly for my taste.
Almost like a joke which is very witty, so witty that no one gets it.
I am not criticising his version, but I will stick with my version of that "thing".

अब तो रवीश कुमार भी आ गये हमारी बुक शेल्फ में! आज ही डिलीवरी मिली ❤️ और आज ही दो घंटे के भीतर ही इसका अर्थ भी समझ लिया कि क्या होता है “इश्क़ में शहर होना”! इश्क़ में डूबे इंसान के लिये सारा शहर एक समंदर होता है जिसको वो अपने साथी के साथ इश्क़ की कश्ती से पार कर लेना चाहता है, उसे घर पहुँचने की जल्दी हो न हो सफ़र से भी उसे इश्क़ हो जाता है। ये “लप्रेक - लघु प्रेम कथा” का संकलन है, जिसका अनुभव कुछ कुछ कविता की मानिंद है जिसकी खुमारी काफ़ी लंबे अरसे तक नहीं छोड़ती। छोटी-सी नन्हीं-सी कथाओं में हँसना रोना मुस्कुराना गाना सब कुछ है! शायद नये आशिक़ों को इसमें कुछ प्रेरणा मिले कि किन पगडंडियों से होकर इश्क़ की छकड़ा गाड़ी को ले ज़ाया जा सकता है, वहीं पुराने आशिक़ों को भी उन गलियों की सैर करवाती है जिन्हें वो या तो सालों पहले छोड़ आये हैं या अपने हमसफ़र के साथ अभी भी उन गलियों में ही ग़ुम हैं!

इश्क़ रश्क की चीज़ है, और इसकी शुरुआत मुश्क आने से पहले ही हो जाती है, मुझे भी अपना कुछ कुछ ताजा हो गया गोया कल की ही बात हो। ये वाक़ई एक नया सा कुछ है जो मुझे बहुत प्यारा और क्यूट लगा। 😊

Lord - reading in Hindi takes me tiiiiiiime! This was alright. Check out my review of the English translation of the book where I essentially said :

"I mean, it's okay. Short fiction (one page max) about love in a city - specifically in Delhi. Makes sense if you're from the city or know it well because a lot of it was mentioned and referenced. Some good lines but otherwise a bit of a disappointment. "
