Attractive Nuisance

Rate this book
Camilla Sweeten is serious about her job in the County Attorney’s office. She’s even working up the courage to ask her boss to consider her for promotion to deputy.

Then, into court walks the gorgeous Zane Holyoake, and disaster strikes—in the form of a total brain fog right in the middle of her closing arguments. In front of both her boss and the meanest bear of a judge in the county, Camilla hears herself saying, “Like, I totally made my point,” as though she’d flown in from1980s California in a time machine airplane.

Now her boss will never consider her for deputy—especially since Zane turns out to be a new lawyer, possibly brought in to steal her dream job.

But when a notorious criminal is caught in their county, Camilla must focus on getting the thief convicted and not on Zane, who smells heavenly and is bent on distracting her with lunch offers and wacky Boy Scout stories that may melt her many resolves.

It’s going to take incredible willpower to ignore this attractive nuisance.

Attractive Nuisance is the first book in the Legally in Love Series by best-selling romantic comedy author Jennifer Griffith.

I love a story that ends with a kiss, whether it's a book or a movie. That's the big payoff! So that's the kind of books I like to write, and I call my style "cotton candy for the soul"-- light, sweet, gone. We all need a little escape from reality for a while, and escapist fiction can be the perfect remedy.

I'm a moderately bad housekeeper, I have a black thumb, and it takes a small miracle to get my hair to curl. My handsome husband and I live in the Arizona desert where we're raising our five children, who never let us stop laughing.

4/18--This book was completely re-written but it has the same title. Reading it again, I think I enjoyed this version more. The chemistry is off the charts and the connection is real. Zane and Camilla work well together and fit into each other's lives in a natural and easy way, especially as they compete for a promotion together, work to solve a mystery, and live in the same house (separate floors, of course). This is such a fun romance.

************

I love a persistent and determined man who knows exactly what he wants and that's just what Zane is. When Zane walked into the courtroom, all reason flew out of Camilla's mind and she ends up making a fool out of herself.

In a way, these two remind me of the Loony Toons characters PePe Le Pew and Penelope. Camilla is desperate to avoid the clutches of Zane and will do anything possible to shoot him down, avoid him, and escape his presence. Zane, on the other hand, will do anything to trick Camilla into a date, to woo her with his charms and good looks, and to capture her time and attention. He's not perfect and does things to drive her crazy, but she has a hard time resisting his smooth charisma.

Camilla is very committed to work, since she doesn't have a family. That kind of loyalty is good, but she takes it too far, leaving no room for romance. It's explained why she does this, but I still had a hard time understanding it. Zane doesn't take much seriously and has very good reasons for his light heart. I enjoyed their banter and the way they learned to work together, trying to capture a criminal. I'm looking forward to what else this series will bring.

Content: mild romance (kissing); nothing else of note. Clean!

Camilla keeps having dreams...and they keep coming true!

Ok, if that were me, I might have a little panic attack, or a giggling fit depending on the dream. Well Camilla's dreams are definitely not giggle inducing dreams, and probably not quite panic attack worthy. Definitely some swoon worthy dreams. So how does she react when the man from her dream shows up? The man she was kissing quite intently in her dream. And, when she's in her final argument in court. Oh, man. Talk about a funny scene. I would probably have been very tongue tied and shocked, to say the least.

Camilla and Zane both have past insecurities and sorrows dealing with their families. They both have some healing that needs to happen, but these two were well written for each other and to be understanding and loving to help the other heal.

There is plenty of chemistry in this book. I think I liked all the unexpected moments of surprise when their paths continued to cross at the beginning. I enjoyed seeing them work together through some of the more intense moments of the book. I couldn't decide what I thought of their boss, Falcon. Both Camilla and Zane, along with a few other co-workers, are candidates to fill a big position and are put through some interesting situations/tests to see who the best candidate is. Of course their boss is trying to find the best candidate but some of the ways he went about it, had me wondering about him for a little bit of the book. But as the team works together, they are able to prevail and uncover certain facts that help Camilla and Zane solve their latest case.

I listened to an audiobook of this and enjoyed the narrator. He did a great job bringing these characters to life and adding in little things that made listening to this story a fun experience.

Content: Clean. Some more intense kisses but nothing further than kissing. A couple moments of peril but nothing graphic.

I received a free audiobook code from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
I have a personal kindle copy I got from Amazon.

Happy Reading!!!

When prosecutor Camilla Sweeten starts working with too-good-looking-for-his-own-good fellow prosecutor Zane Holyoake her heart catches flame -- too bad it feels more like heartburn than a burning heart. She drives a BMW, he drives a monster truck. She is the hardest worker in the office, he is known as the slacker.

Camilla can hook guys but not reel them in, and Zane is definitely un-reelable so she constantly turns down his lunch and dinner invitations. But he finds a way to counter her blocks. She has a hard time trusting him, but he is pretty determined and the more time she spends with him the more she discovers there is more to him than she originally thought.

This is a predictable story line, but I still really enjoyed watching these characters interact. I especially loved the interaction between the main characters and how they balanced each other out.

Attractive Nuisance is the best contemporary romance I've read this year. Smarty, witty, and tender, it balances sizzling chemestry with poignant moments. The characters are instantly likeable, with challenges that make them human. I highly recommend this G-rated, adult romance to readers of all ages.

This was seriously one of the cutest fastest reads I've read in a while. It was hot and sexy and so squeaky clean! I'm a new fan of Jennifer Griffith. A great story teller and yummy hero and no yucky stuff. LOVED IT!
Totally recommendable. Headed on to the second!

The major positive for this offering is that it is a clean romance. However, this novella was a bit of a disappointment for me. The overall story line was enticing, but the protagonist characterizations turned me off as neither came across as true to life for me. Camilla came across as a needy, pessimistic heroine who continually looks toward anything and everything that could go wrong. She dwells on the fact that her parents delayed having her until her mother was in her forties and were then take from her when she was still rather young. She touts the idea that at the age of 27 she is too old to start a family. This scenario comes across as contrived simply to create drama. The hero, Zane, is supposed to be a cracker-jack lawyer. Yet, Camilla keeps harping on his bad English grammar. Since a lawyer’s stock in trade is exceptional language skills in court and since Zane is portrayed as being exceptionally skillful in persuading juries, this dichotomy greatly detracts from his appeal. Like the only other Jennifer Griffith offering I have read, the best I can offer is three stars for this novella.

Attractive Nuisance was a fun read! I immediately loved Camilla's character and voice full of lots of sarcasm. I loved her work ethic and that she's learned to find family among her co-workers. I also loved the humor and the way Zane totally throws her off her game. Zane took me some time in getting warmed up to. He's so different from Camilla and kind of flies by the seat of his pants. I wasn't sure if I liked that or not and if I felt he was good enough for her. In the end, he proved himself. Thank goodness.

Definitely worth picking up as a quick and fun chick-lit with some swoon-worthy moments, humor, and characters that I enjoyed.

Attractive Nuisance had an interesting plot idea. Two attorneys working together, fighting for the same job. The overlying competition for the same job and the focus on the case helped to move the plot along. I liked Cami and Zane, but I did have a hard time following the flow of the story or Cami’s thought processes, to the point where I had to go back and read again. However, there were several humorous moments and it was a sweet clean read. I liked the end. Overall a clean, quick read. If you want something light to read, this is a good book to choose.

I wanted to love this book but I just couldn't. It was really wordy and there were inconsistencies in the book. I hate when that happens!! I liked Zane but Camilla rubbed me wrong. She was being so ridiculous about her age!!! She was over 20 yrs younger then her mom was when she started having kids. Yeah. That was weird!

Camilla Sweeten is a very smart, hardworking, accomplished attorney. She works long hours and doesn’t know the meaning of play. Her boss has a weird sense of fun, and requires the firm to camp outs every year. All attorneys and staff must be present with their significant others and families. One year Camilla was so desperate and embarrassed to go alone she hires some guy she met at the laundromat to pretend to be her boyfriend. This year Camilla has no plans to go whatsoever, then comes good looking, sweet-talking, and charismatic Zane. An attorney that has transferred into their firm and has caught Camilla’s attention, so much so that she stops mid-sentence in the middle of closing arguments when he walks into the room. Ordered to work together to bring down the “Beemer Bandit”, Camilla finds her walls and structured life is beginning to crumble. Zane is going to win this case and her heart if he has any say.

I enjoyed the writing style, but the characters had me extremely annoyed. An accomplished attorney wouldn’t stop mid-sentence and get tongue tied over just the looks of a person in the middle of court. Not only is Zane so good looking that Camilla becomes a tongue-tied idiot, he also can charm the pants off all juries and judges without lifting a finger to research what the case is about. It annoys me that Camilla is so scared of having children at her “old age” that I’m extremely surprised that she’s so ancient at the age of 27. I would be expecting that fear with someone in their late 30’s not there 20’s. What grown man changes jobs just to get the chance to meet a woman? I just couldn’t enjoy this book. I know it’s not reality and it’s a work of fiction, but I just couldn’t believe the characters and their actions.

By midway through chapter three, I am laughing so hard — aloud and, by myself, mind you — that I had to put the book down for a while and hit “pause” on my Audible app. This book is deliciously romantic and totally hysterical!

I just loved Camilla and Zane. Each of them has a personality that the “world” sees and yet, up close and personal, are wildly different people. In many ways, each of them are a bit lost and deeply misunderstood individuals.

From the time they meet, although they are competing for the same position, the pages just sizzle with their magnetic attraction, charm and positively delightful humor.

Although this is a quickly moving romance, Camilla’s “prophetic” dream prior to meeting Zane, as well as mysterious and unexpected situations thereafter, lend a good bit of momentum to the trajectory and speed of their relationship.

This sweet romance will make you smile, laugh out loud, and sigh as you root for Zane and Camilla to get their HEA.

3.5 stars

I listened to the audible version. I loved the end where it said the author’s husband is the lawyer she’s in love with. How sweet that her hubby’s occupation inspired these courtroom romances.

I wasn’t sold on the male narrator. He did a fine job, but the main male character’s attraction to the main female character seemed pretty lusty, and may not have come across like that if it’d been read by a woman.

I honestly wasn’t expecting a mystery, and that was a good addition to the story. It was nice to be kept guessing for part of the story.

The relationship seemed to come on quickly, but the characters were well developed and things flowed well.

On a Jennifer Griffith kick

I'm struggling with how to rate this one. I read this series backwards. Book three was really great. Book two was good too. This one was okay. I think the ending felt too rushed for me.

Content: Clean
Language: Clean
Religious: Great values, but not religious. I liked that about this book.
Overall story: Again the ending was rushed. Also the main female character didn't make sense to me with her marriage doubts and kids. I'm glad the main guy helped her realize how silly those doubts were. Her way of thinking just didn't add up on my mind--28 and too old to have kids? No way. I still really enjoyed this book.

Happy reading!

A wonderfully well written clean, flirty romance. It is full of funny interactions and enjoyable banter with plenty of twists and fun lighthearted comedy keeping me engaged from the start. Zane and Camille were relatable characters with great chemistry and a fantastic group of supporting characters. I was on the edge of my seat, Zane and Camilla have secrets and confessions that need to be shared if they are ever going to get their HEA. A bonus of descriptive breathtaking scenery and a glimpse into small town life. I also have the audible version were Glen Pavlovich did an awesome job narrating this lighthearted romance making the story all the more interesting and fun.

Sometimes a dream is gone at the break of day, and other times it comes back to you again and again, and you know it's important. Camilla Sweeten had a dream, and slowly through the day, all of the details came true.

This lovely story of true love is woven around a legal career, a mystery, and family. It's probably too good to be true, but I wanted it to be real. The characters were unpredictable and interesting. The legal cases were varied and kept the reader's interest.

Jennifer Griffith is a talented author, probably a little biased towards lawyers, and always makes the reader glad that they read her well written stories. I loved reading this book!

County prosecutor who wants to move up has to prove her worth to her exacting boss that she is the one who deserves the promotion and that she has worked the hardest for it. Then the boss makes it a game with six people competing for the position and includes one man who throws her off kilter in the worst way (but also the best). Super clean, but very much a romance story and it has plenty of plot twists that you don't see coming (also a few you totally DO see, but still great!)
Too many coincidences to be realistic, but still very fun and readable and the characters are great.

Great HEA story!

A great HEA story if I’ve ever read one. Although getting there was more fun. I’m a Jennifer Griffith die hard fan now that I’ve read a few of her books. I promise if you pick one up you couldn’t go wrong. I like the way she tells the story from both POVs plus there are many unexpected surprises along the way. Keeps you interested so you’ll keep flipping those pages. I highly recommend this book for all clean romance lovers everywhere.

Winning Combination

Zane and Camilla were or were not destined for one another.
Romance, mystery, family, and legal issues run together seamlessly in this terrific book.
It's hard to find something to say about it that would not create a spoiler, as plot point and plot twist pile atop one another.
Griffith wins the case.
Recommended for all readers of clean romance and mystery.

Camilla has spent two years trying to impress her boss with her legal skills. When a higher position becomes available he hires someone from another firm, is it for the job she wants? Zane and Camilla are put in some pretty strange situations, as they get to know each other they also help each other with some personal issues. I enjoyed Zane and Camilla's chemistry and compassion.

Not the best book I’ve read but a pretty fun read.

My take:
-Zane is quite confident and flirty, which I like.
-I like that the book was clean.
-I’m not a big fan of how many times the book mentions Zane checking our Camilla’s legs.
-Totally would have written the peak scene at the campout differently. It was rushed and I was thinking there would be more confrontation.
-It was near the end when the book mentions Camilla’s hesitation about getting married and it was a pretty weak excuse.

Overall, I don’t think readers would be disappointed if they read it.

A County prosecutor, Attorney Camilla Sweeten has the dubious pleasure of being the boss’s favorite. When he asks her to go on a blind date with the son of his frat brother, she refuses – which, because he’s prosecuted so many sexual harassment cases, he knows he cannot force her. Camilla is a dedicated attorney, intent on seeing justice served. She works hard and enjoys a nice win rate. With the deputy county prosecutor position opening soon, she is encouraged by her colleague and friend, Sheldon to put her name forth for it. As he puts it, she is the hardest working person in the office, so she should push for it. Never mind that she is too new to the office to realistically gain it.

Her professional life is turned upside down when a new attorney joins the staff. Zane Holyoake is handsome – so handsome that she loses her train of thought and forgets her closing argument when she first catches a glimpse of him. Zane is her direct competition for the deputy position and while she finds herself attracted to him, she’s determined to beat him and gain the promotion she wants.

I did not like Attractive Nuisance. For one, I do not know a single attorney who is not only confident in the courtroom but also in their professional and personal life. Sure, an attorney may be more subdued outside of the courtroom, but not to the extent Camilla demonstrates. It is refreshing that Ms. Griffith understands how rare it would be for an attorney of Camilla’s level to gain a deputy county attorney position – but it is disappointing when that is ignored in deference for the plot. I’d be okay with that if it were not the further complications Camilla is given. Zane is allowed to convince Camilla to let go of some deep seated pathos that have destroyed her former relationships.

But perhaps the biggest issue is that it is not clear why or how the two even gain a relationship since as near as I can tell, they were simply attracted to each other (a good basis to start a relationship) while also rivals (hello trope!) with the majority of the book focused on the court cases in which they were involved. Show me some character development. Show me how all of this ends in a happily ever after, but all that Ms. Griffith did was tell me.

Camilla Sweeten is serious about her job in the County Attorney’s office. She’s even working up the courage to ask her boss to consider her for promotion to deputy.

Then, into court walks the gorgeous Zane Holyoake, and disaster strikes—-in the form of a total brain fog right in the middle of her closing arguments. In front of both her boss and the meanest bear of a judge in the county, Camilla hears herself saying, “Like, I totally made my point,” as though she’d flown in from 1980s California in a time machine airplane.

Now her boss will never consider her for deputy—especially since Zane turns out to be a new lawyer, possibly brought in to steal her dream job.

Camilla is incredibly hard on herself. Zane seems to be totally self assured. They are asked to work together on a case--with the promotion on the line. The more they work together, the more sparks fly-in anger, frustration, and attraction!

I dislike Camilla's lack of self esteem. She is doing her job--and doing it well-- but assumes she is about to get fired. She talks about all the awful things that happened and how awful her life was. BUCK UP! She is so down on herself, I found myself not liking her.

Zane, on the other hand, wears his heart on his sleeve. He is a "what you see is what you get" kind of guy. He makes no pretense about chasing Camilla. When he finally gets his moment to share his story, it seems to be glossed over and forgotten.

Overall, I was underwhelmed by this story. I actually picked it up to read and realized I had read it a month ago. It was just forgettable enough that I hadn't remembered reading it. The story just didn't grab me. I would be willing to read another story by Ms. Griffith, but I won't be seeking any out.

Camilla is a complete perfectionist, eager to impress her boss into earning the new position that just opened up. She spends too much time working, going over every detail over and over, aiming to be the best she can be. She is on the right track until she messes up the closing argument during a hearing due to the wonderful Zane Holyoake.

She does not need any distractions right now, certainly not Zane, the gorgeous and ambitious attorney also out to get the position of Deputy County Attorney.

Yet she finds herself struggling to resist his charm and great looks. Slowly she starts to question her own relationship reservations, and wonders if Zane is worth taking a chance on.

This book was the perfect romantic comedy, that kept me turning the pages, eager to find out where it would lead. I found myself laughing out loud several times throughout the book due to the witty dialogue between Zane and Camilla.

The supporting charaters are very entertaining, and make for a great extra dimension to this read. Each carather is portrayed in such a way you get a vivid image of them, and you find yourself connecting to them immidately. I could feel along with Camilla due to the great naration skills of Ms Griffith.

I really enjoyed this read, and look forward to reading more of her work.

This book was really fun! One of the first things I noticed about this book was the clever chapter titles. They are all legal terms, so fun for a book about lawyers. Camilla is a really interesting character, she's kind of boring at first because she's working so hard at her job to get a promotion. But once Zane shows up on the scene, it's all she can do to string two sentences together. I love how she keeps trying to convince herself that she wants nothing to do with him, almost looking for reasons why he's not perfect. Things like his vehicle of choice, a jacked up monster truck basically. Or the way that he tries to get her to go out with him. All. The. Time. It really takes her a long time to realize that he's real and perfect for him, but that makes the story all the more fun.

Zane was a great character, he's pretty much the hot guy next door. I really loved their boss, Falcon, wow! He is a quirky character, I liked how Camilla never knew just where she stood in the office in relation to him, was he mad at her, was she one of his favorites, who knows! I was kind of in awe of the stuff he pulled at their work party, make sure to read this scene! I'm pretty sure my jaw was dropped open during the whole thing. Really well-written!

This is a really cute, clean, fun romance that you can read fairly quickly. You won't want to put it down, I know I didn't!
