Welcome to 1780. The Continental dollar teeters on the brink of total collapse. In its fifth year, the Revolutionary War drags on, leaving citizens squabbling like siblings and backstabbing like enemies. Tensions among the colonists are at a breaking point. Many have lost heart, and some have switched sides.
American war hero Major General Benedict Arnold is among those planning to defect to the British. Preparing to betray West Point and General George Washington, Arnold must first rendezvous with his co-conspirator, Major John André, Adjutant-General to the British Army.
In a fortuitous turn of events, Spymaster John André finds himself stranded in American territory rather than, in one glorious stroke, winning the war for the British.
But what if André had made it back to his warship, the Vulture, waiting on the Hudson River? Two Spies in Time explores that question.
What if the British had won the war?
Fast forward to 1980. HH, a first-year teacher, is suddenly transported from British Commonwealth Kansas to colonial New York City, where she meets the legendary spy Nathan Hale. He convinces her to join him on an impossible mission: help America win the War of Independence, a war it has already lost.

After twenty-plus years of teaching bright-eyed, enthusiastic pupils and tired-eyed, apathetic ones, and everything in between, Suzy realized each and every student had a story to tell—some even traumatic as her own. Her debut novel, Saving Summer, was born out of a desire to offer a bridge of hope for students, encouraging them to see themselves as victors rather than victims. Awarded Valley Middle School’s teacher of the year in 2020, Suzy now teaches 6th, 7th, and 8th grades at Carlsbad Seaside Academy. Two Spies in Time brought to life history I should have known but didn’t. I marveled at the near misses and unlikely successes that make up America’s founding story. Woven together with a fun 1980s tale, the novel gave me a grand adventure that highlighted the miracle of our nation’s birth.
I love early American history fiction stories and time travel adventures. So of course, Two Spies in Time by Suzy Ryan caught my eye just by its title. The story begins in the British province of Kansas in 1980. Yes, I did say British province! In this world, the red coats won the Revolutionary War! HH (Helen), a middle school teacher, is getting ready to go to the airport and catch her British Airways flight to New York, where she will meet her students for her school field trip tour of the city. HH has never been away from Kansas and is beyond excited. But as she dozes off during her flight, a young, handsome officer appears to her in a dream that will change the trajectory of her trip, and maybe history.
Suzy Ryan has not only come up with a genius storyline, but she has also shown off her awesome writing skills! Her main character introduction through little details like how HH chews gum, and her small talk dialogue, gave me a sense of knowing HH for real before her adventure began. Also, the way she parallels the different time Eras between 1980 and 1776 in the beginning chapters made it easy to read as the story flowed perfectly throughout.
The format and storytelling style also made the difficult and ambitious time-travel historical fiction writing project easy to read. Moving from first to third person narration voices within a story is not easy, and it can really create problems for the reader when not done properly. Suzy Ryan did it impeccably, and it made her story come through. It is a pleasure to read, allowing the reader to get lost in the captivating storyline and characters. The dialogue felt so true to the times and genuine to the characters’ personalities. The short chapters made the story move fast. It is not often that I find myself not able to put down a book. I did not want to put this one down at all, and felt my mind lingering on it even when I was not reading.
Suzy Ryan’s Two Spies in Time is a captivating time-travel American Revolution romance that hits all the check marks for an awesome, thrilling ride. I found it to be a unique piece of literature; it is both interesting enough to linger in your mind when done reading, and so entertaining that you will not want to stop reading it! A must-read book for all historical fiction lovers…and anyone else! Five Stars!
The quotes at the beginning of each chapter are worth the price of the book. Diligently researched and historically accurate. The role of Providence in the birth of our country is woefully omitted in today’s public schools. Two Spies would be a great book for an American History class. And anyone who enjoyed 11/22/63 by Stephen King would delight in HH’s time travel back to 1780!
