I’ve been reading so fast lately that I haven’t been leaving reviews. But this book stopped that trend. I have to let everyone know that this book should be on your “next reads” list! It’s a true definition of a psychological thriller! I loved every bit! It’s gripping from the start and the pace continues to amp up! It’s not the over saturated domestic thriller. It has original plot lines! I highly recommend!
why did the hitman shoot the wrong person? ok the fmc moved seats. but who alerted the hitman to that exact seat? and he made eye contact with fmc, so he's just that bad at his job that he didn't recognize his target?
we're serious about mom being the villain? what a cheap "twist." she just so happened to be driving on this road, and she looked away at the exact right moment, ok. but now why the hell did she murder the grandfather? there's literally no reason? he's rude and needy but like that's it? mkay. wanted to "save her daughter" from perpetual grumpiness i guess.
and lawyer friend seriously hired a hitman to kill fmc in a revenge plot that he waited years for, but he wanted her to die before the dad met her? the hell kind of revenge is that? you didn't want to wait until they met and formed a bond? and the basis of this revenge is that your friend was driving a car that was ran off the road resulting in your wife's death... yet she was fine? ok so she must have hit her head resulting in a hematoma or something (idk because author didn't explain any of this). but like you didn't know there was anything wrong with her either buddy so you're just as much to blame.
and why are the chapters like 2 pages long. also i promise you do not have to end every single chapter on a "cliffhanger." cmon girl

April Read: The Last Seat by Jennifer Ruff ⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️. Haley James is an ER nurse dealing with a lot—she lost her father the year before, her mother is battling cancer, and she’s estranged from her husband, Adam. Her life takes a sharp turn during what should have been a simple train ride to visit her mother. After feeling uneasy about the man sitting next to her, Haley switches seats. Another woman takes her place, and at the next stop, a man forces his way onto the train and shoots the woman sitting where Haley had been. As an ER nurse, Haley jumps in to help, doing everything she can to save the victim—but that single moment sets off a chain of events that changes her life in ways she never expected. This story had plenty of twists and sharp turns & the ending was chefs kiss.
If you are looking for a thriller that keeps your heart rate up and your brain guessing, The Last Seat is an absolute must-read. This story is a masterclass in tension, delivering a fast-paced narrative that refuses to let go from the very first chapter.
For fans of Freida McFadden, this book is going to feel like coming home—if your home was filled with dark secrets and constant suspicion. Ruff excels at building that specific brand of "popcorn thriller" energy where the chapters are short, the stakes are high, and no one is who they seem to be.
One Of The Most Spot-On Descriptions I've Ever Come Across. So despite having this as an ARC for at least a few weeks, specifically because Ruff is a Lead Author in the Facebook group My Book Friends - which I've been active in since its founding several years ago - I only got to it about a week after its release due to some real-life issues happening these last few weeks and continuing through Summer 2026 or so. And yet my review won't have Goodreads' discriminatory banner against Advance Review Copy reviews since my review is coming in a week late. And yet, at least as of the time I'm writing this review almost exactly as this book completes its first week of public availability, that description right now really is exactly what I say in the title here - one of the most spot on descriptions I've ever come across. Which is pretty awesome itself. It means I really don't have to tell you much more about what to expect with this book.
Instead I'll speak more directly to my own experience with the book, which I always make it a point to do anyway, and tell you that for me, this was a very quick and engaging read. Yes, at a hair over 300 pages it can seem long to some readers (and short to others), and in fact for its genre it is in the shorter half of books - yet Ruff manages to pack quite a bit of actual story in here, with Tony Stark's quip about Nick Fury in the first Avengers movie - "his secrets have secrets" absolutely applying here. Which actually makes for a great quick read, one that right when any given thing starts getting anywhere near overstaying its welcome... bam! We're moving on to something else.
Indeed, the only thing that I could really nitpick on about this book is that at least some of the revelations and twists don't really seem to have any hints or breadcrumbs *at all*, and yes, I subscribe to the idea that *every* twist should have at least *some* level of foreshadowing. Instead, we get a version of a tale from a song that first hit number one over 5o yrs ago and then was done as a *cover* (as I only found out when writing this review!) that became a Southern staple nearly 20 yrs after its original recording. (In perhaps a bit of tragic history that at least to Southern kids of the 80s such as myself, this cover becoming a hit when it did meant at least *I* never knew of the original version of the song!) But this is as close as I'll get to naming this song in the review, and perhaps there are some of my own readers who can piece these clues together well enough. (I guarantee you it will make a lot of sense once you read this book and then look for songs that meet my clues above based on what you find in the text. ;) )
Ultimately this really is one of those books that reads faster than its not-that-long page count would suggest, which is awesome for those who are perhaps trying to squeeze reading in to whatever nooks and crannies they can find in their schedule. (Lines. Take your Kindle or even Kindle app on your phone in lines. You're standing there anyway. May as well read instead of doomscrolling. You'll be much happier. ;) )
“The Last Seat” by Jenifer Ruff is packed with secrets, nonstop suspense, and shocking twists that kept me completely hooked. What starts as one heroic action sends Haley’s life into a terrifying spiral she never could have imagined. Haley quickly finds herself in a situation where she doesn’t know who she can trust, which makes every moment feel tense and unpredictable. I found myself constantly yelling at Haley to be careful or not trust certain people, she had my heart rate up higher than normal! Every chapter raised the stakes and kept me on edge. This thriller is gripping, intense, and full of surprises. I couldn’t put it down and was shocked by where it all led.
Once again this author has written another spellbinding thriller that will keep you guessing to the very end. In "The Last Seat" an ER nurse witnesses a shooting on a commuter train and she assist the victim until EMT meet them at the next stop. This act of heroism reveals many hidden secrets about the nurse that could lead to murder. This book is brilliantly written with many unexpected surprise twist. It keeps the reader involved and quickly absorbing chapter after chapter. It is a quick read and like all Ruff books there is no smut or foul language, I appresiate that. I have read 12 of her books and have thoroughly enjoyed every one.
The Last Seat by Jennifer Ruff is the first book I’ve read by this author, and I really enjoyed it.
I liked that Haley is kind and tends to see the good in everyone. Even though it’s a thriller, the overall tone still felt surprisingly positive, which I think is hard to pull off—but it was done really well here.
The suspense was solid, the characters were engaging, and the short chapters made it easy to keep reading—I finished it in just three days. Honestly, I could have easily read another 300 pages.
Love that this book is set in Chicago, but I was a little disappointed with the ending. I kind of knew from the beginning that the protagonist was a bit psycho, so I was somewhat able to guess where things were going. Still, what a sad story. A family built on lies is never going to end well, and yikes, the ending was disappointing.
That being said, the book definitely caught my attention and kept me guessing, even if parts of it felt predictable. It was still very suspenseful, and I really enjoyed that part of it.
The Last Seat by Jennifer Ruff turned out to be a light and easy thriller to get through on a Saturday night. It was fast paced, easy to follow, and the short chapters made it really bingeable. I ended up flying through it pretty quickly because the story kept moving without slowing down too much.
Overall, this was an entertaining, low-stress thriller that made for a good casual reading session when you just want something quick and engaging. The ending was satisfying and had just enough unexpected moments to keep things interesting without feeling too over the top.
This is a new to me author and overall I enjoyed the story. I really liked the short chapters but every single one ended on some kind of cliffhanger. There was a lot of foreshadowing but very little was revealed until midway through the book which made it a bit hard to stick with. I was able to start figuring out some of the twists pretty early on but not everything. Because of that it doesn't rank high on the level of suspense for me. It was still an overall enjoyable way to pass some time though.
This book had such potential but didn't deliver. The twists were very predictable and silly. The characters were all like caricatures of people instead of fully formed people.
It was also VERY clear this author knows nothing about Chicago...so many inaccuracies.
SPOILERS!!!
What was the point of the Granite Global stuff? It didn't amount to anything in the end.
Haley's mother had no reason to kill Adam's grandfather...stupid plot point.
This is the first book I’ve read by author, Jenifer Ruff, and it definitely won’t be my last. I highly recommend this psychological twister that keeps you questioning who to believe. A train incident, deception, a targeted life, a life saved, and the determination to protect the ones you love all collide in this gripping story. “The Last Seat” will keep you guessing until the very end. An absolute twisty and unforgettable must-read.
I have read all of Jennifer Ruff's books and they never disappoint, and The Last Seat is no exception! A great cast of characters and throughout the book I had so many people in my mind of who could be capable of something devious. In the end, the devious person was not one I had picked! I loved this book and can't wait for another one from Jennifer Ruff!
I really liked reading this thriller. It started out brilliantly and for most of the book that level is maintained. Only the last part is feels a bit mwah compared to the rest. The characters are great and the way uncertainty and who to trust is described makes it a great suspenseful thriller
This is a very good thriller, The story is different and engaging. It keeps you on your toes as it gives you clues one at a time. 5here are a few twists and turns that have you leaning one way and then the next. Then it throws in a few real twists at the end. Highly recommended.
This book honestly irritated me in so many ways. The main character wasn’t the brightest of the bunch. The author switched POV midway through the book and didn’t even have the decency to notify you of the switch you just had to figure it out with context clues. The story has major plot holes. I’m so disappointed I wasted my day and stayed up late to finish this mess of a book.
This is an enjoyable thriller/suspense. I missed a little something towards the end but not the jaw dropping twist Hailey moves out of her seat on the train. The girl that takes her seat is shot and Hailey being an ER nurse moves into action and this starts the ball rolling in this edge of your seat tale
I read this book because someone HIGHLY recommended it… I’m confused why….. The writing style was awful. The story line read like a middle schooler. I just really really hated it. I’m surprised I even finished it. Please sit this one out!
Wow. This book had me hooked from the first chapter. I could not put it down. It kept me guessing the whole time. I enjoyed the plot twists. I could’ve easily read it in a day if I would have had the time to do so. Definitely recommend!
This was surprisingly good. Had no idea what is was about, but am glad I downloaded it. Kinda had it figured out but didn't see the end coming. Recommend.
I loved this book!! If you like psychological thrillers that are full of plot twists that you didn’t see coming then this book is for you. I highly recommend it!!
