Entertaining enough popcorn read much like earlier volumes with a decent plot and characters. Not an overly big fan of the powerup, something with such a vague downside feels a bit too much like a deus-ex-machina. Otherwise it fitted expectations.

The crew is at its best when the action is urgent and the drama is paramount. Recent installments of the light-novel series have deprived the team of the fragrant danger endemic to such adventures. And yet, for what feels like an interlude, an imminent threat to captain and crew makes this story dynamic once again.
REBORN AS A SPACE MERC v15 is much better than recent volumes, but the ephemeral nature of its drama falls short of any true, trajectory-setting story details that might instruct readers on the quality of adventures yet to come. The current volume steps up from the realm of entertaining-but-uncompelling and into the strata of very-cool-but-short-lived. Perhaps, after fifteen volumes, that's all one can expect from this series.
In narrative terms, Hiro and the crew venture into the Klion System at the behest of the empire and Colonel Serena Holz' pirate-hunting team. A border conflict between the Grakkan Empire and the Belbellum Federation has since nudged several star systems into play, and both sides are shielding their interests by way of pseudo and clandestine operations. The federation is hiring pirates to sabotage imperial interests, and the empire is hiring mercenaries to safeguard regional outposts in lieu of official defense posturing. What could go wrong? Other than war, of course.
But the book's focus isn't really on the greater war scenario, the book's focus rests on Hiro's intuition when it comes to hounding duplicitous pirates, analyzing data pulled by local mercenaries, and sounding the alarm on corrupt nobles. Readers aren't treated to very much actual space combat, but they do catch a glance of the type of fighter Hiro is when he proves his mettle by sheer accident (e.g., hypothesizing on different pirate skill levels, deducing pirate attack routes, contextualizing the web of relationships between nobles).
At this point, REBORN AS A SPACE MERC v15 proves a little too clever for its own good. For example, when Hiro offers a detailed breakdown of how to outsmart higher-class pirates, Colonel Holz pushes back, offering a strict military perspective. But Hiro stays the course and realizes that despite the reach of the empire, no pirate-hunting data analysis has existed until he stepped into the game ("So how is it possible that elite career strategists in the military haven't come up with anything by now?" page 71). Hiro's observation is fair, but comes far too late to be of consequence. If he came upon this analysis by the novel series' second or third volume, then perhaps the character's capacity to encounter, fight, defeat, or lose to elite pirates would have proved far more challenging and intriguing than the novel has thus far born out.

It's the kind of overpowered action the genre is generally known for, and the author actually delivers. Hiro fights to save several crewmembers in peril, and he shows no hesitation when it comes to ripping people apart and crushing them with every ability he has on tap. The chapter is appropriately labeled, "Pandemonium," but sadly comprises only 50 pages in the middle of the novel.
The volume makes a few small changes otherwise, including the inevitable coupling of Hiro and Serena, which feels awkward and contrived, and doesn't play to either character's predominant, individual traits. If the only way for these co-protagonists to come together is through myriad circumstances involving episode characters and their impractical designs, then perhaps the story is working too hard to reach the proposed solution.
Serena's post as a soldier of the empire is one of the novel series' main subplots, but the author hasn't found much use for it after more than a dozen volumes. Perhaps instead of thinning the dynamic, the author should have severed it entirely. Contriving a scenario such that readers can have it both ways (i.e., Serena is a tool of the empire; Serena is dedicated to a mercenary) feels less original and less compelling.

Love it
Can't wait for the next installment to see what's gonna happen. Will Serena join the crew? What about Chris know that she got thrown into this? He said he has enough money to buy a bigger mothership know and he'll probably get more money when he goes to the capital for his service too. So is he going to get a bigger mothership that he could dock all three of his ships in. Maybe a battleship and he'll put Serena in command of it. Also if he buys land why bother building a mansion when his ship can serve as one. That be awesome. Especially when thinking what it be like inside the ship since he always makes it supper comfortable. Just thinking about it I'm thinking battleship appearance outside and luxury cruise liner inside. I wonder if it be too much for a pool that way get more swimsuit scenes. Can't wait to see what the author does. Also loved rampaging Hiro scene especially when he decapitated that guy mid sentence. Nothing better than knocking a proud smug character off there high horse.

Ryuto nos ha regalado otro volumen brillante del mercenario espacial. Hubo acción trepidante, expansión del mundo, desarrollo de la trama principal y el momento más esperado por los fans: . Además, la mesa quedó servida para el volumen 16 y para muchos arcos futuros porque a este mundo todavía le queda mucha tela que cortar.

It only took our protagonist about 15 books to finally get with Serena. Despite being a Japanese light no but I never expected this book to be like a harem lit novel. It feels in a lot of the common enemy, tropes targeted for single men and teenagers. Sometimes it’s OK to mix it up.

Enjoyed the series but this book brought a fun twist. Granted the way the author went about getting Serena and him together was a bit cliche ignoring the questionability of it. I would still say this is a worthwhile read.

About time!
This volume has been a long time coming! It's a great read, with an intense action sequence, it makes me even more excited for the Anime in October!

Another good volume, although Hiro’s power scaling is becoming even more unbalanced. We finally get some progress with the Colonel, so looking forward to the consequences in the next one.
