This missed the mark on body positivity big time but the romance is sweet and steamy.
Gotta be honest I wanted to DNF and withdraw from reviewing on the first page because I didn't want to leave a bad review for the author, they deserve honest feedback and I was feeling pretty negative about it immediately and didn't want to be a downer but the app I got this arc from did not let me pull out.
I was NOT feeling the immediate gross body shaming inner monologue of the female protagonist. From the synopsis I thought this would be a slightly dark body worshiping sexy romp for the curvy ladies, but within the first few lines it's pitting women against each other and that doesn't make Maya's personality particularly appealing at all.
In a story specifically about body positivity you'd think they're be less hateful stuff from the protagonist but she's thinking some pretty nasty thoughts immediately like:
"She sounds like a woman who eats three almonds for lunch and considers a bowel movement a personality trait."
and
"She looks like a skeleton wrapped in spray-tan"
before we have even witnessed that the sister is equally nasty with the fat shaming these comments are in the first two paragraphs and our first introduction to Maya.
Body image isn't a war and I'm just not feeling this thin vs fat angle and pitting women against women but since I have to review I did finish it and the actual romance is nice.
The great parts:
- Maya is actually plus sized with sensual descriptions of rolls, stretch marks and cellulite rather than just the typical lubbly jubblies and round hips on an hourglass figure a lot of "curvy" FMC's are described as.
-Franklin is a big growly man who instantly stands up for Maya and falls first and hard.
-age gap is real, Franklin is 52 Maya is in her 20s
-after he's done condeming thin women also, "they’re just mannequins made of meat" the way Franklin describes Maya's body is definitely worshipful.
"I've spent my life making things beautiful. But I’ve never seen anything as beautiful as you"
-Sex scenes do not shy away from realistic descriptions of Maya's body, how her breasts swing, how her stomach ripples.
-Franklin is deliciously morally grey in pursuit of Maya in that there is some light stalking, lying and voyeurism but he's not irredeemable and it doesn't veer into really dark romance territory (although there is one "look but don't touch" group voyeuristic scene that came out of nowhere and seemed out of character for him)
-Franklin has a very short refractory period for his age, he's insatiable, our girl Maya is getting thoroughly debauched.
I think the actual romance between the two was satisfying, the steamy scenes were an ode to curvy women, and the set up was interesting, I just think there was a lot of unnecessary vitriol aimed at thin women it by far outnumbered anything negative said about Maya herself and that made it rather hard to actually like the characters. They both had some pretty nasty misogynstic thoughts about other women's bodies throughout and it didn't really get any better in that respect. If you took all that out the romance itself was fun.

Well Roxie does warn us up front that this is a work of fiction and in effect not to try it at home. Very true as in essence as the MMC you would be liable for a prison sentence one your actions are revealed. He is a middle aged tailor cum dressmaker who becomes obsessed with the curvy sister of a bride to be, so of course he decides to stalk her, in effect hold her prisoner and then have sex with her with only dubious consent.
For the purposes of the story Maya is strongly attracted to Franklin and after a small amount of doubt and reticence she decides that he is the man for her.
It is weird and at times quite funny, so once you get past the morally dubious plot it is fun.

'Be warned: This one’s pure smut! Expect an age gap, a plus-sized heroine, and a possessive, obsessive anti-hero.'
The characters were very appealing and likeable and perfectly steamy together. Plot was intriguing and pretty straightforward. World building was solidly drawn and impressive. Thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend!
Grab a copy, kick back and enjoy!.

A quick and easy read that’s perfect for a lunch break. It was easy to get into, moved along well, and made for an enjoyable short read when you want something light and entertaining without a huge time commitment.

This book was wild. Edge of my seat, gripping my iPad, sweet and spicy heat. Loved both the main characters. Loved that beautiful woman and how she was described AB’s worshipped. Absolute great read.
