She doesn't believe in monsters . . .

Myth-busting ethnologist, Sheba Reynard's life's work is proving that destructive paranormal beings don't exist. But while exposing hoaxes, she's also hiding from the frightening shadows in her past that say differently. To find the missing pieces of her memory that continue to haunt her dreams, she must face the truth behind the nightmares . . . a truth that could lead to madness or even death.

He doesn't believe in death . . .

Frank Cobb knows monsters are very, very real. He's pursued a wily vampire into the jungles of Peru, prepared to face the demon with only his very human skill set. But are his motives-to bring the creature back for government research-purely business or for revenge? Either way, he's not happy to have an annoyingly strong-willed-and utterly irresistible-woman getting in his way.

Forced together by circumstance, they venture into the shadowy unknown. Only it soon becomes clear that one of them will have to surrender their quest . . . if the other one is to make it out alive.

“Ms. Gideon continues to run in the fore-front of the vampire romance genre. Non-stop action and passion combined in an exotic setting will definitely thrill fans, leaving them craving more. -Kathe Robin, Romantic Times

With over 72 sales to her credit since her first publication in 1987, Michigan author Nancy Gideon’s writing career is as versatile as the romance market, itself. Her books encompass genres from historicals and regencies to contemporary suspense and the paranormal. Her works have been published overseas in Romanian, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Danish, German, Icelandic and Chinese, among other languages.

Also listed on the International Movie Database (IMDB), she collaborated on the indie horror films In the Woods and Savage with screenwriting and ADR script credits, and even played the character “Bar Extra.”

A national speaker on writing in general and romance in particular, Gideon is a Western Michigan University honors grad with a major in journalism and minors in history and communications. She’s a member of Novelist, Inc. and the Mid-Michigan, Greater Detroit, PASIC and FF&P chapters of Romance Writers of America®, and is former vice-president, published author co-liaison and award-winning newsletter editor for MMRWA.

The mother of two grown sons, one married and proud producer of her grandson and the other shanghaied into being her occasional assistant, she 's retired from 18 years as a legal assistant.

A prolific writer, Gideon who also writes as Dana Ransom and Lauren Giddings, attributes her creative output, which once peaked at seven novels in one year, to her love of history and a gift for storytelling. She also credits the discipline learned through a background in journalism and scheduling writing time around diaper changes, Scout meetings, band lessons and outings to the Zoo Boo...and, of course, OCD. The due date for her third book and her second son were on the same day...and both were early! When on deadline, she'd turn on the laptop between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m. to get a chapter in before work.

While the pace is often hectic, Gideon, a Gemini, enjoys tackling diverse projects. One month it’s researching the gritty existence of 1880’s Texas Rangers only to jump to modern themes of intrigue and possibly a legal thriller or two. Then, it’s back to the shadowy netheworld of shape shifters, vampires and movie serial killers. When not working on her latest plot twist before sunrise, even now that she no longer works 9-5, she enjoys indulging in Netflix, hosting her critique group, and feeding all things fur, fin and fowl. And, of course, reading.

Three men battle through the Amazon forest in Peru to the tomb of a king that was buried with gems and gold from 600 BC when the last footed traffic had been in this tomb. The men found the tomb they believed they had been looking for. Mano was the smallest ,and so he was to enter the structure - with a rope around him so the other men could pull him out-to see what he could find in it as the structure's entrance was small and he cleared away another wall of stone. He found a golf ball sized nugget of gold and kept that for himself after all he had to go in by himself he deserved it. Mano then dropped several feet down and the chamber he was now in was huge. There was a large creature made of wood adorned with rubies and gold. Then Mano sensed something and when he turned there was a fateful scream The other two men brought Mano back up to the forest but he was clearly already dead. Several places in Texas at different time frames animals were found dead with all the blood drained from their bodies. Then the same thing happened in Puerto rico and a name is given to the legend - The Chupacabra= and this was blamed for the deaths of about one hundred and fifty animals all drained of their blood. Then there are the same kind of incidents in Michigan and rural Miami and back to Texas. Sheba came to Puerto Rico seven months earlier. Sheba ‘s life work was exposing hoaxes. Sheba stared at the timeline before her and the huge stacks of notes she had gathered since her arrival. She had done a thorough investigative research approaching the topic more like a scandal journal list instead of the scientist she was. Sheba had talked to the people with haunted eyes who had found their animals dead and drained of all their blood. The Puerto Rican government had supplied Sheba with a grant to find out the truth and the truth was there was no monster involved. Then Sheba got a call from Paulo letting her know he was back home in Peru and he wanted to know when she would be back. Even though she wasn’t sure why Sheba would never go back home to Peru. Then Paulp told Sheba they had found a tomb in the jungle and maybe the tomb. Paulo called Peru home but to Sheba it only meant death. Frank Cobb takes a job with him running into Sheba. Then they both go to the jungle and Sheba will have to face her past.
I couldn’t really get into this book.It dragged for me too much for me and definitely could have been a little shorter. This book just wasn’t for me but I am sure there are others who will really enjoy this book.

Midnight Shadows is book 7 in the Midnight paranormal vampire romance series. It follows the events of book 6, but I think this book works as a standalone. Unlike Ms. Gideon's other books in this series, the male and female lead characters in this story are mortals rather than vampires. Yes, there are vampires, but they seem to take more of a secondary role. Frank Cobb, still recovering from his heartbreak from book 6, takes on a job that results in him crossing paths with Sheba Reynard. Their adventures together take them down to the jungles of Peru where Sheba confronts the mysteries of her past. Not surprisingly, the two wind up falling in love. The author did provide some resolution in the end. Overall, the book was predictable and a little drawn out at times.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Book 4 in her Vampire Romance Series. Good. Hard for me to recall anything else though... too long ago, but it is still on my keeper shelf.
