This was my first book by this author.

I thought that the concept was excellent and, although slow, very well developed and well written.

In the beginning I wasn’t so sure about this work, especially because a 22 years old character sounded like a 13 or 16, but the story gets better at 40%.

I wouldn’t call it a thriller or a page turner, but it held my interest after a couple of chapters.

There was a review that came too early, but it was perfectly placed.

The conclusion did not surprise me, even though there were no clues (or I was oblivious).

There are some trigger warnings but one that I must mention is abusive relationship.

An Absolute Masterclass in Suspense!
I am still catching my breath after finishing this book! If you love psychological thrillers that keep you guessing until the very last page, She Never Came Back needs to be at the top of your TBR list.
From the atmospheric, eerie setting of rural France to the dual-narrative tension between Sunny and Nanette, the pacing of this story is flawless. The author does an incredible job of weaving together a cold case, a modern-day threat, and deep-seated family trauma. Sunny’s desperation to find out what happened to her sister seventeen years ago is palpable, and the contrast with Nanette’s glamorous—yet precarious—life in La Baule keeps the stakes sky-high.
The characters are brilliantly drawn. "Happy Frank" gives off the perfect amount of unsettling, small-town suspicion, and the looming threat of a serial killer adds a pulse-pounding layer of urgency to Sunny's search.
It is dark, twisty, and deeply emotional. A brilliant exploration of toxic love and the lengths people will go to protect their secrets. I couldn't put it down and highly recommend it to anyone who craves a truly gripping mystery!

Seventeen years after her sister Melanie disappeared without a trace, Sunny returns to the same small French village hoping to finally uncover the truth. The recent disappearance of another young woman convinces her the two cases may be connected and as she starts asking questions, it quickly becomes clear that not everyone wants the past to come to light.

I really enjoyed the central mystery and the way the story slowly unraveled. There were plenty of twists along the way and while some of the answers were hiding in plain sight, I still found the journey satisfying. Watching Sunny piece together what happened all those years ago kept me invested, and I appreciated how the different threads eventually came together.

One aspect I particularly liked was the way the novel explored the lasting impact of a disappearance. Seventeen years may have passed, but Sunny is still deeply affected by losing her sister and it was heartbreaking to see how that unresolved trauma continued to shape her life. I also found it interesting how some of the villagers genuinely believed they were protecting the people they loved by keeping secrets, when in reality those decisions caused even more pain and suffering.

My only real issue was the pacing. Although the mystery itself was engaging, there were a few sections where I felt the story lost intensity, and I occasionally found my attention drifting. I wanted the narrative to hold onto me just a little more consistently.

Overall, this was an enjoyable psychological thriller with an intriguing mystery, strong emotional themes, and plenty of twists. While it wasn't quite a page-turner for me from beginning to end, I still enjoyed uncovering the truth alongside Sunny.

The cover definitely caught my eye! As someone new to this author, I’ve quickly become a big fan, especially knowing this story draws inspiration from real-life experiences. Creepy!

Seventeen years after her sister Melanie's disappearance in rural France, Sunny returns to uncover hidden truths. Meanwhile, socialite Nanette Montmartre faces a personal crisis. As more women go missing, fear of a serial killer grows...

This heart-pounding narrative unfolds through multiple perspectives, mainly those of Pamela, Sunny, Nannette, and Frank. Sunny is understandably frustrated that her mother won't take her back to France, where her sister went missing. Confused and desperate for answers, she runs away to do some sleuthing of her own, believing she has been seeing her sister and craving closure. Although Sunny wishes to keep her trip under wraps, this secrecy may lead her into trouble.

Nannette, Melanie's best friend, is roped in when Sunny’s mother, Pamela, asks her to keep an eye on Sunny. This request stirs up a whirlwind of emotions from the past. The author delves deeply into Nannette’s life, revealing secrets that become increasingly overwhelming. We also meet several other intriguing characters, including Pierre and Frank, and let’s not forget the dog! I love it when dogs play a role, bringing added protection for the innocent. The author skillfully differentiates each character, making them stand out.

The writing style is refreshingly unique! The suspense is palpable and kept me hooked, even though we learn early on what happened to Melanie and who might be behind her disappearance. But there’s more to the story than meets the eye. The narrative presents several versions before unveiling the truth, leading to unexpected twists and a gripping conclusion! At one point, I found myself torn about who to trust, continuously shifting my suspicions among several characters. What an impressive web of deception!

This book is a must-read for anyone interested in cold cases, amateur sleuthing, and a host of unreliable, morally ambiguous characters. If you can relate to complex family dynamics, long-buried dark secrets, and the pursuit of closure—and if you enjoy finding help in unexpected places with a keen gut feeling—then this story is for you! It’s an intense murder mystery that will have you turning the pages long after you should have gone to bed. As I mentioned, I’m new to this author, and I can’t wait to read more!

I’d give this one 3.5/5 stars. Overall, it was an interesting thriller with an intriguing premise, particularly for readers who enjoy stories centred around disappearances and a strong sense of place. I also really enjoyed the French countryside setting, which added a lovely atmosphere to the story.

That said, I never quite found myself completely immersed in the story. There was plenty to keep me curious and twists and turns, but I didn't feel as gripped or invested as I had hoped. I think part of that came down to the characters as I found myself getting increasingly frustrated with some of their decisions and personalities, which made it a little harder to connect with them emotionally.

The mystery itself was interesting, and I can definitely see this appealing to readers who enjoy thrillers with a disappearance at the heart of the story. For me, though, it didn't quite have that extra something that makes a thriller truly stand out or stay with you after finishing it.

Overall, an enjoyable enough read with an interesting premise and a beautiful setting, but unfortunately not a standout thriller for me.

This is perfect for fans of Claire Douglas and TV's show The Missing.

A brilliantly atmospheric psychological thriller filled with secrets, lies, and unexpected twists.

I loved the way the mystery unfolded through multiple perspectives, gradually revealing pieces of a tragedy that happened seventeen years earlier. Sunny’s determination to discover what happened to her sister made her an engaging and sympathetic character, while Nanette’s storyline added plenty of suspense and emotional complexity.

The French setting is beautifully described and creates an unsettling backdrop where everyone seems to be hiding something. Just when I thought I’d figured it out, another twist completely changed everything.

A fast-paced, emotional thriller about family, obsession, betrayal, and the devastating consequences of keeping secrets. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys character-driven psychological suspense.

No body was ever found, no one was brought to justice and the investigation eventually went cold. However, for Melanie’s younger sister, Sunny, the mystery has never truly ended.

Sunny has struggled for years with the uncertainty surrounding her sister’s disappearance. Drawn back to the French village where Melanie was last seen, she becomes convinced that returning there is the only way to understand what happened. She is taken in by a friendly local known as Happy Frank, but as she begins asking questions, it becomes clear that the village has not forgotten Melanie and that some residents would prefer the past to remain undisturbed.

Running alongside Sunny’s investigation is the story of Nanette Montmartre, a glamorous woman living an apparently privileged life in nearby La Baule. Nanette seems to possess everything Sunny lacks: security, confidence and social status. However, an urgent telephone call from England threatens to expose a secret that Nanette and her mother have spent years trying to protect. As the two storylines gradually move closer together, the reader begins to understand that Melanie’s disappearance may be connected to a much wider web of lies, manipulation and betrayal.

The French setting is one of the strongest aspects of the novel. The contrast between beautiful coastal towns, quiet villages and the darkness hidden beneath them creates an effective atmosphere. The location initially appears peaceful and inviting, but that sense of safety gradually disappears as Sunny discovers how many people may know more than they are prepared to admit. The isolated roads and unfamiliar surroundings also increase her vulnerability, particularly when it becomes clear that somebody is aware of her investigation.

Sunny is a sympathetic but complicated central character. She is emotionally fragile and remains deeply affected by her sister’s disappearance, yet she is also determined to uncover the truth. Her belief that Melanie is somehow calling her back to France adds an unsettling psychological element to the story. At times, it is difficult to know whether Sunny’s instincts are leading her towards the truth or whether grief and trauma are affecting her judgment.

I appreciated that the novel explores the lasting effect of an unresolved disappearance on the family left behind. Without a body or a clear explanation, Sunny has never been able to grieve properly or move forward. She remains trapped between hope and fear, constantly imagining what might have happened to Melanie. Her return to France is therefore about more than solving a mystery; it is also an attempt to reclaim control over a past that has shaped her entire adult life.

The chapters involving Nanette provide an interesting contrast. Her life appears polished and carefully controlled, but beneath that surface is a growing sense of panic. The relationship between Nanette and her mother is particularly important, as both women appear to understand that the truth about the past could destroy everything they have built. Their sections add tension because the reader knows they are hiding something, although the full nature of their connection to Melanie is revealed gradually.

The novel also introduces the possibility that Melanie’s disappearance was not an isolated event. When other young women begin to vanish across France, fears of a serial offender emerge. This broadens the story beyond one family’s tragedy and creates a greater sense of urgency. Sunny is no longer simply investigating something that happened seventeen years ago; she may be moving closer to a person who is still dangerous.

The narrative moves between different characters and time periods, allowing the mystery to develop in layers. This structure creates plenty of questions and gives the reader several possible explanations to consider. There are numerous secrets, suspicious characters and misleading appearances, and the author keeps the central truth hidden for much of the story.

The pacing is steady rather than relentlessly fast. The first part takes time to establish Sunny’s emotional state, the French setting and the different characters connected to Melanie’s disappearance. The tension increases as the links between the storylines become clearer, and the later chapters move much more quickly. Readers who enjoy slow-building mysteries may appreciate this approach, although I occasionally felt that the story could have reached some of its revelations sooner.

The book contains several twists, but some were more convincing than others. I guessed part of the connection between the characters before it was confirmed, and a few developments required some suspension of disbelief. There were also moments when characters withheld information in ways that seemed intended mainly to prolong the mystery. However, enough uncertainty remained to keep me interested in discovering the complete truth.

I would have liked slightly more development of some of the secondary characters. The village contains several people who could potentially be involved, but not all of them felt equally memorable. Happy Frank is an intriguing presence because his kindness offers Sunny a sense of security, while the nature of the story makes it difficult to accept anyone entirely at face value.

The themes of toxic love and family loyalty are handled effectively. Several characters have convinced themselves that hiding the truth is necessary to protect someone they love, but the novel demonstrates how that protection can become another form of harm. Secrets do not disappear simply because they remain unspoken; instead, they continue influencing relationships and decisions for years.

The final section brings the different strands of the story together and provides answers about Melanie’s disappearance. The conclusion is dramatic and contains some genuinely tense moments. Although I had anticipated elements of the truth, I was still interested in seeing how the various secrets connected and what consequences the characters would face.

Overall, She Never Came Back is an enjoyable psychological thriller with an atmospheric French setting, a compelling unresolved disappearance and several interconnected family secrets. Its strongest elements are the sense of place, Sunny’s emotional connection to the mystery and the gradual convergence of the different storylines.

Some pacing issues, familiar thriller conventions and less convincing twists prevented it from becoming a standout read for me. Nevertheless, it remained an engaging mystery and should appeal to readers who enjoy cold cases, missing women, complicated sisters and apparently peaceful communities hiding disturbing secrets.

Ok- mixed feelings here. Mystery- good! But the method and way Sunny decides to begin this search is....not realistic!

This story is set in France, in a small town. 17 years ago Melanie went missing. Her family vacationed at her grandparents house in this small village every year. However, after her disappearance, her grandparents sold the house and moved to the UK. None of the family ever returned. Her sister, Sunny, was extremely affected by this. She felt that her family wasn't looking hard enough, and simply gave up on finding Melanie. At the time of Melanie's disappearance Sunny was 7 years old.

Sunny has never given up on looking for Melanie. The trauma that she has gone through has affected her life. At 22, she is an alcoholic, has become angry, has no future, and her relationship with her family is delicate. Her parents divorced shortly after the disappearance, and her father remarried and had another family. One day her mother tells Sunny that she needs to go into rehab. Sunny decides she does not want this, and steals a credit card and money from her grandmother and takes off for the village in France to search for what happened to Melanie.

There are some strong characters in the book. Although I found Sunny to be annoying, I understood that she was dealing with a lot of unresolved trauma and feeling that she was alone. Due to this, I felt that her character read as authentic. Along the way, Sunny meets Frank Howden, who is the current owner of the chalet her grandparents sold; Natali, who was Melanie's best friend and with her on the night she died; and Rolph, Natalie's disgusting, abusive husband.

I was curious to find out what happened, and found that part to be very interesting. Although I thought I knew what the ending would be, there was one detail that surprised me. The mystery part was engaging.

However, the book fell apart for me after the first couple of chapters. I know that Sunny is in trauma, but after what happened to her sister are we really supposed to believe:
A) She breaks into her grandmothers old house because the owner left a note saying he will be back in 2 days for the milkman?
B) She makes dinner and sleeps in her old bedroom?
C) Upon his early return, she tells the man that she doesn't have a place to stay, no one knows that she is here, and she wants to keep it a secret where she is????

Even though Sunny is dealing with a lot of issues, since the disappearance of Melanie affected her whole life, I just don't think she would have made these unsafe decisions that she did. And because of this, even though I wanted to know what happened, I had to suspend belief about how Sunny decided to take on this journey.

So overall it was an interesting book when focused on the disappearance. However, due to the unrealistic beginning I just could not rate this higher.

Dixon has a talent for taking deeply emotional stories and wrapping them in an unsettling, can't-look-away psychological thriller, and She Never Came Back may be her darkest yet.

Seventeen years after her sister Melanie disappeared during a family holiday in rural France, Sunny returns determined to uncover the truth. What follows is an atmospheric, tension-filled mystery packed with buried secrets, complicated relationships, and the lingering trauma left behind when a loved one simply vanishes.

I loved the French setting, which felt both idyllic and quietly menacing. The multiple points of view slowly peeled back the layers of the story, constantly making me question who could be trusted. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, Dixon expertly pulled the rug out from under me. There were plenty of red herrings, and although I suspected one piece of the puzzle near the end, the full reveal was still shocking.

This is definitely one of Dixon's darker novels, tackling difficult subjects including abuse and violence with sensitivity while never losing sight of the emotional heart of the story. Sunny isn't always an easy protagonist to love—she's impulsive, flawed, and deeply scarred—but her determination to finally find answers for Melanie kept me completely invested.

Fast-paced, atmospheric, and filled with twists, She Never Came Back is a gripping psychological thriller that explores grief, family, and the devastating consequences of long-buried secrets. If you enjoy character-driven thrillers with emotional depth and plenty of surprises, this is one to add to your TBR.

She Never Came Back had me hooked from the start, and boy does it pack a punch.
Patricia Dixon doesn't hold back with her storytelling and for this I'm eternally grateful.

Sunny was just a young child when her sister Melanie disappeared from their grandparents home in Saint-Luc France whilst holidaying with them as they did every year.
Melanie was never found, and after awhile her grandparents decide to sell up and move back to the UK.

Seventeen years later and Sunny's life is a total mess,she can't hold down a job, her only friends are her drinking buddies and Vodka.
After another stint in A&E her mum decides enough is enough and wants to put Sunny in rehab.

Sunny feels her sister everywhere and believes that she is still in her old grandparents village in Staint-Luc, after stealing some money and a credit card from her grandmother Sunny heads back to France.

After arriving back at her old grandparents house, she discovers that the owner is away for a couple of days, with nowhere else to go and very little money Sunny breaks in and Hope's that there maybe some clues to her sister's disappearance.

When the owner Frank returns back early, Sunny explains who she is and needs to find out what really happened to her sister.
Frank an ex foster carer has sympathy for Sunny and agrees for her to stay with free bed and board in exchange for housekeeping and helping him out with his pie business.

Things start to take on a sinister turn when Sunny discovers that other young woman have been going missing for several years, determined for the police to reopen her sister's case.

There are so many twists and turns throughout the book and the ending is brilliantly written.

She Never Came Back by Patricia Dixon is a gripping psychological thriller that kept me hooked with its emotional intensity, layered mystery, and steady stream of twists.

From the very first chapter, there's an unsettling atmosphere that makes you question everything. Dixon does an excellent job building suspense, revealing just enough information to keep you guessing while holding back the bigger picture until the right moments. I found myself constantly changing my theories about what had happened, which made the book incredibly hard to put down.

The characters are one of the novel's greatest strengths. No one is entirely straightforward, and each person seems to be hiding something. I especially enjoyed how the story explored grief, guilt, and the lasting impact of secrets. The emotional side of the mystery gave the book more depth than a typical page-turner and made me genuinely care about the outcome.

The pacing is strong throughout, with short chapters that keep the momentum going. There are plenty of twists along the way, and while I guessed one reveal before it happened, there were enough surprises to keep me fully invested until the final pages.

Patricia Dixon's writing is engaging and accessible, making this a quick read despite the heavier emotional themes. She creates a believable sense of tension and uncertainty that lingers throughout the story without relying on over-the-top drama.

What a book this was! This was my first Patricia Dixon and it won't be my last.

Initially, I hadn't been convinced - the thing that stops me giving this a perfect 5 star rating was I felt the start was a bit slow and didn't initially grab me. But as the book went on, everything came together so wonderfully and it worked!

The book centres around a disappearance that happens in rural France 16 years ago, where 17 year old Melanie Carter vanishes while on a family holiday. In 2026, we see her family still struggle with her disappearance, and her younger sister, Sunny, travels back to France to find out what happened and get some closure.

Patricia Dixon does an amazing job at demonstrating the sort of society found in this rural French town, and how it fits with the decisions they make. I also really loved how the story was told with several twists throughout that continuously changed your perspective on everything. You are left questioning each character and their motives, and what is true/isn't true. Rather than allowing one huge climax at the end, pieces unravel bit by bit, keeping you captivated the entire time. The book also does an amazing job at showing character progression and demonstrating growth, particularly in her main character, Sunny. Furthermore, I loved how, for the most part, each character was complex in their own way, with their own individual reasonings that were well explored and expanded on.

Huge praise for this book and I can't wait to read more from Patricia Dixon in the future!

Patricia Dixon, what have you done to me? This story stirred my emotions so deeply that tears were never far away.

It begins, in a sense, at the end, which only highlights this author’s incredible ability to capture her readers imaginations and hold them captive for hours—time ceases to exist from the moment the first page is turned.

When Sunny was six, her older sister Melanie went out one night and never returned. Too young to act then, Sunny has never stopped thinking about her, and the loss has haunted her and her family ever since. She believes more could have been done to find Melanie, and when she hits rock bottom, she decides the only way forward is to return to France and piece together what happened that night. She has never given up hope that her sister might be found.

The story is rich with layers, each one crafted with care and depth. Sunny isn’t perfect—she’s taken risks and put herself in danger, trying to numb the pain of her past. She’s bold and unafraid to challenge others, yet underneath it all, she’s still the frightened little girl longing for her big sister.

Over in France, Melanie’s best friend Nanette is trapped in an abusive relationship, leading to some truly harrowing moments. Mrs Dixon always handles these scenes with remarkable intelligence, compassion, and sensitivity.

OMG - then there’s the twist—completely unexpected, leaving me stunned and in awe of the author’s dark and brilliantly inventive mind. Patricia Dixon hasn’t just captured my heart with this book; she’s secured her place as an exceptional storyteller.

This is a novel that will remain firmly at the top of my list.

This was a twisty read that moved at a pretty fast clip. It centers on Sunny, who is struggling at home with her parents and her job, so she runs off to France to see if she can solve the mystery of when her sister Melanie disappeared ~15 years ago. You also get chapters told by the POV of Nanette, Melanie's close friend who has her own secrets to hide from that fateful summer.

The characters in this book felt very real- Sunny was surly and self-centered, but in a really believable way, and her enduring love for her sister was evident. Even without lots of text focused on everyone's thoughts, everyone felt very well developed. I thought it was an interesting cast of characters that also opened the door for many red herrings as we try to determine what really happened to Melanie. The twist at the end was surprising- I had considered and abandoned that particular person as the villain, so while I was KIND OF right, it definitely gave me a good twist. I thought the ending of the book was good- it tied up loose ends and also felt like a realistic way to end the story. If I had any nit, I wish I could have gotten a little further into the head of the villain and what made them tick before everything was exposed.

Overall, I thought this was a good read and it held my interest throughout. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

She Never Came Back by Patricia Dixon is about a young girl who goes missing while on vacation. Sixteen years later, her younger sister, Sunny, returns to the small town where it happened, hoping to finally uncover the truth about her sister's disappearance.

I really enjoyed this one. The writing was solid, the pacing kept me turning the pages, and the characters felt well developed. Sunny was an interesting main character, but she honestly drove me crazy at times. I completely understand that losing her sister at such a young age would leave lasting trauma, but it felt like she carried a chip on her shoulder and took her anger out on everyone around her. I wanted to sympathize with her more, but she made it difficult.

The supporting characters were fantastic and really helped bring the story to life. About halfway through, I told my friend that if the author went in a certain direction with the story, I was going to hate it. Well...she did exactly what I was hoping she wouldn't do. To my surprise, though, it actually worked. I ended up liking how everything came together.

This book took me on an emotional roller coaster. I was sad, happy, frustrated, disgusted, and completely angry at different points throughout the story. I always think that's the sign of a good book—it made me feel something.

If you enjoy small-town mysteries, family secrets, and emotional thrillers, I'd definitely recommend picking this one up.

A brilliantly tangled web of family secrets – a solid 4 stars!
As a massive fan of psychological thrillers, I am always on the hunt for a story that genuinely keeps me guessing, and She Never Came Back absolutely delivered.
The book is told through three different viewpoints: Sunny, the troubled sister searching for answers seventeen years after Melanie vanished in rural France; Nanette, a glamorous socialite with a buried past; and Pamela. Switching between these three distinct voices added a fantastic layer of tension. Just when you think you’ve got a handle on one perspective, the next chapter shifts and pulls the rug out from under you.
Patricia Dixon does a wonderful job with the atmosphere. The contrast between the eerie, quiet village of Saint-Luc and the glossy, high-society life in La Baule works perfectly. The pacing really picks up when the whisper of a serial killer enters the frame, making the danger feel incredibly close and immediate.
My only real gripe is that a couple of the twists towards the end felt slightly rushed, but the sheer momentum of the plot and the toxic family dynamics kept me hooked the entire time. If you love a dark, slow-burn mystery that explodes into a pulse-racing thriller, you’ll love this.

Sunny Carter is 22 but was just a young child when her sister Melanie disappeared, 17 years ago, when spending the summer with her grandparents in the village of Saint-Luc, France. Her parents have since divorced and neither of them will talk to her about Melanie. Sunny has gone off the rails and her Mum and Grandmother want her to check into a rehabilitation centre but Sunny has other ideas.

Briefly, after stealing money and a credit card from her grandmother Sunny has returned to the place Melanie disappeared. After breaking in to her grandparent old home, and being discovered by the new owner Frank, he agrees to let her stay. When Sunny finds out other young girls have been disappearing she starts to wonder if Melanie, whose name isn’t on themissing list, was one of them. Meanwhile, Nanette Montmartre, Melanie’s best friend when she disappeared, is hiding her own secrets.

There are plenty of twists and turns and some very good red herrings in this dark and mysterious family drama. It’s sad to see how Sunny has been affected by the loss of her sister but she is quite annoying in the way she treats people trying to help her. So many people are hiding secrets it made me question myself more than once about the potential killer. An easy read with a shocking final twist.

This book lingered in my soul. When I had to set it down to go do adulting things, it lingered. When I finished and closed the book, it lingered. This story and these characters might live in my heart for a very long time.

I read this quickly, with wide eyes, a held breath, a racing heart, and at times tears streaming down my face. Patricia Dixon does something so effective here, telling the story of Melanie's disappearance seventeen years after it happened, and yet every flashback, every ounce of pain and loss and unanswered question feels as fresh as if it happened yesterday. That contrast between time passing and grief staying frozen is one of the most powerful things about this book.

Sunny is the heart of this story. She lost her sister and simply could not accept a cold case as the final answer. She spiraled for seventeen years, and I loved her from the very beginning. Her pain was so evident that I could not blame her for losing the will to do much else with her life. She never stopped holding onto hope, and nothing was going to stop her from finding the truth.

Nanette's story broke my heart into a million pieces. She was Melanie's best friend, and the aftermath of that loss turned her own life into a nightmare. You need a strong stomach for her chapters, and even then it is a challenge. I could cry writing this, remembering everything these women have been through.

What stayed with me most across this entire cast is that even the characters with wealth and status, who look like they have it all together, are quietly carrying grief, trauma, or their own personal demons. Nobody is untouched.

At its heart, this book is about abuse and how little is truly done for the victims, whether emotional, physical, or otherwise. It is far more common than we would like to believe, and victims are rarely protected or, in some cases, ever found. Patricia Dixon does not look away from that truth.

I would recommend this to readers who are not afraid to read about sensitive topics that are real and gut-wrenchingly raw. Please go in aware that this book deals with themes of abuse.

I was immediately drawn into Sunny’s fragile, determined search for answers. Her return to the village where her sister vanished seventeen years earlier feels both eerie and inevitable, and Patricia Dixon captures that sense of being pulled toward something you’re not sure you want to find. Happy Frank is a standout character—warm, odd, and quietly compelling—and the contrast between Sunny’s world and Nanette Montmartre’s glossy, privileged life adds a delicious tension as their stories begin to converge.

The French setting is beautifully done: rural, sun‑bleached, and threaded with menace. As rumours of a serial killer surface and more young women disappear, the novel tightens into a genuinely pulse‑raising read. Dixon balances emotional depth with suspense so well; the family secrets and toxic relationships feel just as dangerous as the external threat.

It’s gripping, atmospheric, and satisfyingly twisty. A psychological thriller that lingers after you finish, full of darkness hiding in plain sight.

Taken in as a friendly local known as Happy Frank, Sunny begins digging into the past - and edges closer to the secret that someone will do anything to keep hidden. In nearby La Baule, glamorous socialite Nanette Montmartre looks to have everything she ever wanted. But an urgent call from Britain threatens to expose the truth she and her mother buried after that long-ago summer. As young women begin disappearing across France, fears of a serial killer surface. And in Saint Luc, the danger is closer than anyone thinks.

This is a slow-burn, but it's worth sticking with it. The characters were interesting, believable and well-developed. Secrets are being kept. There were lots of twists, red herrings and I never saw the last twist coming. The story is told from multiple points of view.

She Never Came Back drew me in from the very beginning.
Sunny is a troubled young woman which is not surprising as her elder sister, Melanie disappeared when she was six years old. Before that, Sunny, Melanie and her parents spent idyllic Summers staying with her grandparents in rural France.
Once Melanie disappeared things were never the same again. Her Mum and Dad divorced, her grandparents returned from France and now only Sunny, her mother and grandmother remain in Manchester. No one really talks about what happened all those years ago. Sunny can’t keep a job and relies heavily on alcohol to get her through. Finally, her Mum and grandmother who are at their wit’s end make the decision to pay for Sunny to go to rehab. Sunny is having none of that and decides to secretly go to France, to the last place she saw Melanie. In her heart she just needs to find closure and see if there is any trace of Melanie.
This book has so many strong characters, a gripping storyline and a really eerie setting. I enjoyed the ride and never guessed what was coming even though I was waiting with bated breath for something to happen!

With the seventeenth anniversary of her older sister’s disappearance coming round again Sunny Carter decides that now is the time for her to return to France and go back to the same rural village where her sister was last seen. However, in order to get some sort of resolution Sunny must confront the demons of the past, uncovering huge secrets, and devastating lies, always in the hope that the truth about Melanie’s disappearance will finally be revealed.

This complex story is told through several characters who have all had to live with their own sorrow about Melanie’s disappearance, from the thought processes of her best friend Nanette, to the torment of Melanie and Sunny’s mother, Pamela there are deep underlying secrets which refuse to go away. It is only when Sunny starts to disturb the equilibrium that the toxic secrets, so long buried, can finally come to the surface.

There are twists and turns a plenty in this fast paced psychological thriller, some of the twists had my heart pounding as I read faster in order to get the final conclusion, which, when it came didn’t disappoint. Cleverly and intelligently written this is a gripping story, well told from start to finish and with set of characters who, whilst not wholly likeable, certainly command the reader’s attention.

Every chapter felt like walking through thick morning fog—you know something is watching, you just can't see it yet.

Patricia Dixon weaves family secrets, missing women, and simmering danger into a psychological thriller that had my pulse doing cartwheels. Sunny was easy to root for, and the colorful locals—especially Happy Frank—added just enough warmth to make the darkness hit even harder. The writing is rich, atmospheric, and deliciously unsettling, wrapping around you like a cold mist until the twists come crashing in. If you love thrillers where every smile hides a secret and every answer opens an even darker door, clear your schedule...because this one isn't giving your Kindle back.

Seventeen years ago, Melanie Carter vanished on a lonely road in rural France. The blurb for She Never Came Back continues and draws the reader into the mystery of whatever happened to Melanie and why she never returned or was heard of again.

I thought the blurb was brilliantly written and promised “a pulse racing psychological thriller”.

I think She Never Came Back is an OKAY 3 star read. It plods along and is told from multiple points of view making me wonder why after 17 years anyone can be bothered. There are many hints that things may get interesting or juicy but never peak. This is not a gritty psychological thriller but a calm unfolding mystery. All the characters make errors of judgement, you expect one person to drop the ball but not everyone. I feel this story lacks realism and my hopes for a gripping read were quickly washed away. The ending is nothing to write home about either, especially as the prologue gives you sufficient clues as to the outcome. If this was a film, I would call it a B-Movie - second rate but it passes, hence my 3 stars.

I really enjoyed She Never Came Back (Kindle Edition) a psychological dark thriller by Patricia Dixon.

Seventeen years ago, Sunny's sister, Melanie is considered a cold case, as her body has never been found. in France. Sunny has visions of Melanie in the present day which eventually takes her to the same village in France where she had vanished without trace. Even Sunny and Melanie's parents have given up on ever finding her.

Sunny seeks refuge with a local butcher and baker, known in the village, as "Happy Frank." Sunny helps pay her way by helping with the chores around Frank's home.

Unbeknown to Sunny, Nanette, a socialite married with two young boys and an abusive husband who lives in France has kept a mind blowing secret between her and her own Mother.

A lot more young women go missing as a serial killer is on the loose. Can Sunny garner more information to find her sister before her own life is in jeopardy too.

Well Patricia has done it again! She never fails to astound me with her books. The remarkable characters, the settings so well explained, making you feel you are there, and of course the amazing storylines that have you gripped from page one until the end.

Sunny is a problem child, due to the fact, that on a holiday at their grandparents in France, her sister Melanie disappeared. Sunny feels like she is the only one who cares, so decides to run off to France to try to find Melanie. Not wanting anyone to know where she is, she is taken in by Frank Howden, the guy who bought her grandparents house and who Sunny quickly trusts, a man liked throughout his village, a compassionate, kindly and helpful man.

We get to meet an assortment of characters, including Melanie’s best friend Nanette, but who can we trust and who knows more than they are saying? You end up not knowing who Sunny should have faith in, who will help her and who should not be trusted.
Then we have the end … or is it?

I received an ARC of this book from Boldwood Books via NetGalley in exchange for my honest feedback. This was my first book from Patricia Dixon but will certainly not be my last!

There are so many secrets & twists here. About halfway through it seems like we are going to find out what happened to Melanie, and I was thinking - how are we getting a resolution so early on? Will all the rest be about the current missing women? But then it just spirals and you can't trust anything that is supposedly being revealed.

I did not even remotely suspect one of the villains, but once we found who it was, I had a hunch of exactly how dark Ms. Dixon was going, and I found out in the last couple pages that I was correct. OMG. So disturbing!

I was sad at the outcome for one character who already suffered a lot and I wanted them to have a happy ending.

Sunny was honestly a bit whiny and stubborn, but even though I didn't love her, I still enjoyed the book.

This was my first Patricia Dixon novel, and it definitely won’t be my last. From the opening pages, she creates a tense, fast-paced story that keeps your pulse racing. Her writing is incredibly immersive, making it impossible not to feel for both Nanette and Sunny as they face everything thrown at them. Their emotions feel so real, and I found myself completely invested in their journey.

If you love psychological thrillers packed with suspense, tension, and twists that keep you guessing until the very end, this one deserves a spot on your TBR.

This gripping domestic thriller kept me hooked from beginning to end as Sunny sets out to uncover the truth behind her sister's mysterious disappearance. I loved Sunny as the main character—her determination, resilience, and refusal to give up made her so easy to root for.
The story is packed with family secrets, betrayal, and plenty of suspense, with the tension building steadily throughout. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, Patricia Dixon delivered a brilliant plot twist that genuinely gave me chills!
If you're looking for a twisty, atmospheric thriller with compelling characters and plenty of shocking revelations, She Never Came Back is one to add to your summer reading list. A gripping, addictive read that I thoroughly enjoyed.
