Overdue Changes: An M/M Changes Hockey Novella

Rate this book
Logan

A year ago, I made a choice. A bad choice. Out of the blue, I got a shot at moving up from the ECHL to the AHL, probably my last shot at a higher hockey league at age 33. Except at the same moment, my boyfriend came out publicly. I was supposed to be at his side, but professional hockey still wasn't welcoming to gay men, despite a couple of out players. I decided I had to pick between the career I'd been working for all my life, and my boyfriend. I didn't choose Miles. Now, a year later, I know what a fool I was, but Miles is engaged to a woman and there's no way back for us.

Miles

I don't regret coming out. I can't, given how many kids, and adults too, have contacted me to say what it meant to them to have even a retired pro-football player stand up as a gay man. I wish I'd come out earlier, when I was active in the NFL and could've been more of a role model, but I'm not sorry I did it now. My only regret is that somehow, in the stresses of that moment, I lost the man I loved. Logan froze me out, I was angry, and… somehow, we said things we couldn't take back. Now I'm living my out gay life, and that's important, but I miss Logan. Taking care of my friend Rachel's fiancée, acting as her beard till she can get away from her father, makes me feel useful, but I can't help wishing it'd been Logan at my side in those society photographs.

Overdue Changes is a 42,000-word novella set in the Changes hockey universe, but with two new MCs who blew up their relationship a year ago, and aren't sure there's a way back.

I get asked about my name a lot. It's not something exotic, though. “Kaje” is pronounced just like “cage” – it’s an old nickname, and my pronouns are she/her/hers.

I was born in Montreal but have lived for 30 years in Minnesota, where the two seasons are Snow-removal and Road-repair, where the mosquito is the state bird, and where winter can be breathtakingly beautiful. Minnesota’s a kind, quiet (if sometimes chilly) place and it’s home.

I’ve been writing far longer than I care to admit (*whispers – fifty years*), mostly for my own entertainment, usually M/M romance (with added mystery, fantasy, historical, SciFi…) I also have a few Young Adult stories (some released under the pen name Kira Harp.)

My husband finally convinced me that after all the years of writing for fun, I really should submit something, somewhere. My first professionally published book, Life Lessons, came out from MLR Press in May 2011. I have a weakness for closeted cops with honest hearts, and teachers who speak their minds, and I had fun writing four novels and three freebie short stories in that series. I was delighted and encouraged by the reception Mac and Tony received.

I now have a good-sized backlist in ebooks and print, both free and professionally published. A complete list with links can be found on my website "Books" page at https://kajeharper.com/.

You can find me and my book reviews on my author page here on Goodreads - I hang out on Goodreads a lot because I moderate the Goodreads YA LGBT Books group. I also post free short YA stories on that group, more than 50 of them so far.

DNF quite early.

Love this author's work a lot, but this one's not for me. Two-year "in love" closeted relationship. Then, one MC is a coward and not just that, totally cruel, letting his own fear be the reason he leaves the other hanging at an event he was supposed to support him at and stand by his side, and he never shows, leaves town (for a team trade), doesn't ever let the man he "loves" know he's alive/okay. And he never does. The other MC, who was coming out as gay at the event (and wouldn't have pushed the other MC to also come out if he changed his mind, mind you!), does it alone, while fearing the worst. When he finally learns he's been ghosted but good, he spends months living his best gay F-fest life. Fair enough.

The thing with second chance is, you've got to want them to have a second chance. But there's nothing here to root for, for me. They'd be better off meeting someone new/else.

Well, I tried, but this is not the story for me.

I was very intrigued by the blurb: Miles,l a retired hockey player who decides to finally come out with his boyfriend (a hockey player as well) at his side and Logan, the boyfriend, who ditches him to have a shot to play for the AHL.
I was expecting a lot of hurt/comfort, but I got quite disappointed instead.

Things that didn't work:
How Logan left Miles: I'm not questioning his choice to not to come out, everyone has the right to do it when they feel ready. But ghosting him and then gaslighting him was not cool

Miles' double standard: h was pissed at Logan, rightfully so, and I'm glad he didn't call him ever again, he needed to follow his own path. So why did he let Avery walk all over the hard work he put into finally living his life out of the closet? For a year he did a hard work to bring attention over the toxic homophobia surrounding athletes and then and then he was painted like a liar because he was suddenly engaged to a woman. And he never scolded her for ruining his reputation.

Avery, the ultimate brat: I didn't like anything about her. She was such a spoiled girl, using daddy's money and complaining about him at the same time, refusing to accept Miles' financial help (because she was oh so independent) and then not having a single thought about taking advantage of him declaring they were engaged. They were friend and she knew what Miles went through before coming out. And she ruined it all.

Miles and Logan seeing each other for the first time after a year: bland and anticlimatic.

I did like this author's writing, though. I think I'm going to check their other works.

A nice addition to the “series” (it’s a standalone, but set in the Changes series, with cameos from characters of the other books), centered on a second-chance relationship. The MCs are two older guys: Logan “Vally” Valliere, 33, is an average hockey player in the ECHL, a good guy who loves the game but not talented enough to move up for more than a couple of games (especially after a knee injury that didn’t heal well), still in the closet; Miles Buckner, 37, a former football player in the NFL, who came out a year before the beginning of the book (six years after he retired).
Logan and Miles had been secretly together for two years and
It’s a good book, about nice people trying their best to do the right thing despite their flaws and mistakes. It’s classic Kaje Harper, the kind of story you want to read to restore your faith in humanity without choking on too much sugar and unrealism.

(In case you’re wondering how I’ve read this more than a month before the publication date, that’s because the author made it available for free as part of a multi-author promo. That’s also why my review sounds like notes taken for myself, it’s because they are, I wrote them when I was waiting for GR to get on with the program and add the book)

Life choices

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I love Kaje Harper books. Her hockey ones are especially good. So when I heard she was writing a new one in her Changes world, I rubbed my hands in anticipation. Worth the wait! Miles and Logan sort of broke my heart and Kaje put it back together with her brilliant storytelling.
I’ll explain.

Miles is in a tough spot. A pickle. A bind. He loves in best friend Rachel, and so when the love of Rachel’s life needs help, Miles steps up. Avery’s also in a tough spot. Young, stuck under her father’s thumb, and needing to find courage. Most people would struggle with that. Miles steps up. To his own detriment. But that’s the kind of guy he is.

His greatest regret is losing the love of his life – Logan. But Logan made a choice and Miles had no choice but to accept it. Now he’s pretending to be someone he’s not. With no easy way out.

Logan knows a thing or two about pretending to be someone he’s not. He’s in love with Miles. They were together for two glorious years. Then Miles decided to come out. Five years after leaving the NFL – but better late than never. Logan, who is getting to the end of his hockey career, plans to be brave and to come out as well.

Then he gets called up. Unexpectedly. And, believing coming out might ruin any chance he’s got, he flees.

Words are exchanged. Things are said in the heat of the moment.

All is lost.

Until the night Logan calls Miles - and Miles needs him.

In that instant, things look possible.

Except, despite there being several out NHL players (see Kaje’s previous Changes books), hockey locker rooms are still pretty toxic. Logan has to make some tough choices. Miles has to decide if he’s willing to go back to being a secret.

Avery and Rachel need to sort out a whole pile of complicated.

There’s a ton of story packed into this novella. Plus cameos and potential future books. I think it’ll serve as a good bridge between the first three Changes novels and anything Kaje decides to write in the future.

Anyway, highly recommend.

Overdue Changes - Logan & Miles

‘Logan stirred as I slid under the covers. “Y’okay?” “I’m fine.” I eased him back into place against me. “Go to sleep.” “Missed you,” he murmured. “Tell me that when my alarm wakes us before dawn.” Logan pulled my arm higher across his chest and pressed my hand over his heart. “Worth it,” he mumbled, before his breathing softened into snores again. So worth it. This time, I dropped off with my boyfriend safe in my arms.’

Hockey player Logan’s heart broke when he chose hockey and hiding, instead of the love of his life, over a year ago.

Retired football player Miles helps a friend, becoming her ‘Beard’, but still misses his lost love.

A chance call, and a helping hand pit these two back into orbit, all while Logan is finally ready to choose love, in Kaje Harper’s M/M novella.

**********Contains Spoilers**********

I rated this 3.5 stars, so I rounded it up to 4 stars. I enjoyed this novella and thought that it was another good addition to the Changes Series. I’m glad that Logan & Miles found their way back to each other after Logan put his hockey career ahead of his and Miles relationship two years prior. When Miles came out Logan was meant to be standing up next to him but he had a change of heart as he got called up to the AHL and wasn’t ready to come out publicly.

Logan said some sh*t over text that he regretted as soon as he sent the text but it was too late. When they reconnected Logan got to finally apologise for the way he acted two years prior. Yes, their relationship moves at warp speed but I don’t blame them since they’ve been away from each other for the last two years. I’m looking forward to reading more books by Kaje Harper in the future. I’d recommend this book, series and author to others.

I have wanted to read their books but mmm is not my favorite genre But when this option came out I tried it immediately. The story was solid and I did not feel I had missed much backstory. I love the way bullying was handled though part of me wouldn’t have minded a haymaker being thrown either.

I really enjoyed reading Overdue Changes and even though is part of the Changes series you don't have to read it to enjoy this.
