If you like non-stop action, eye-opening worlds, and stakes as high as they get, then you'll love Michelle Medhat’s gripping novel. Please Previously published as The Call and The Shift "Michelle Medhat takes on and pulls off a Herculean feat by seamlessly merging Espionage, Science Fiction and Thriller genres." Garrard Hayes, best-selling Author of Bourbon and Blood "Is it a spy story? Is it science fiction? Is it a thriller? Well, all of the above, and more. Get ready for a roller-coaster of a ride." "Spy thriller cleverly intertwined with a sci-fi part perfectly in line with the increasing belief that everything and everybody is connected. A timeless battle between dark forces and the light resting on the shoulders of a Mr and Mrs Smith of a new genre."
I don't normally read thrillers; I really am a fluffy romance type of a reader. However, I loved Connected, which included both of the author's first two stories, The Call and The Shift. This book was a cross between thriller with a romantic twist and paranormal.
The author was able to weave a complicated plot to keep me interested and guessing. So many emotions in one book. Terrorists, nano-bombs that literally scared the pants off me, corruption in both the CIA and MI6, a very unique story line unlike any other I have read, terrorists who were so smart and extremely evil I'd hate to run into any of the likes of them, torture and paranormal twists that I never could have made up in my life.
Sam is a sexy MI6 agent who is hot as hell and in love with his wife, Ellie. She has no idea Sam is an MI6 agent and when she finds out she flips! This secret, once exposed, starts off a series of events that are unraveled in many very short chapters, which I loved.
Perhaps the fact that this thriller had it all, such as a little romance included, is why I liked it so much. Perhaps it was because of the author's true writing talent that had me guessing and second-guessing and triple-guessing and then none of my guesses actually panned out except maybe one Perhaps it's because I believe this book would make an INCREDIBLE movie and the detail made me feel like I WAS actually watching a movie.
For a while there I was very worried about how the story would end, but I have to say I LOVED the end and literally cannot wait for the next installment to find out what happens next!
Seriously, this author should submit her novel to Hollywood to be considered for a movie...it's that good.
Both The Call and The Shift are extremely well written and the supporting characters are all too believable. The intrigue and corruption in high places on both sides of the Atlantic certainly rang true. The plot is complicated enough, but with all the twists and double twists you need your wits about you to keep up; just when you think you've got it, then Michelle Medhat throws you a curve ball. It's that sort of story. It's a different sort of story - a paranormal thriller with a dash of sci-fi and a hint of romance. The short staccato-like chapters keeps things flowing as the action unfolds around the globe. The Al Nadir terrorists and their dirty bombs are more than enough for Sam Noor to cope with; he carries on the fight for good over evil with Ellie his wife by his side. Is she just a pretty face? How could she possibly figure in a universal struggle between the light side and the dark side? Read the book and find out.
As this book is 2 books in one I will write about both separately. First review is for The Call:
I did struggle at the beginning of this book and had to backtrack a few times as quite a few characters. However, once I had sussed the characters out more (about quarter way through) I enjoyed being able to read from different characters perspectives and found the terrorist threat in the book could be a very real possibility. Strong characters, interesting storyline with some suspense, betrayal and tension. Recommend to fans of terrorist books. Rated 4/5 Review for The Shift:
I have to be honest this was a tough read for me, not because it was badly written, quite the contrary, but there was so much, too much to absorb for me. The characters have great depth and the spy aspects, including the terrorists, are well designed. This is kind of Clancy meets Fleming and I enjoyed the Fleming type moments a bit more personally than the Clancy type moments but that's just a personal preference. If you like spy thrillers you should enjoy this book.
This book is available on Amazon for only 99 cents as 'What Isn't She Telling?' and you need to avoid it if you value your mind.
This book starts out well but it was obviously written as a serial because it drags out details and then you begin to realise that it is not even to the halfway mark. Then there are tremendous levels of gore to contend with and vilifications of homosexuality as a 'perversion', before our heroine is given super powers by friendly aliens and her beloved turns out to be a reincarnation of her her eternal lover from ancient Assyria. If it were not so badly written, there may have been raw material for an interesting series, but this bundle takes far too long to wade through and the end result, the purported rescue of our planet, was not worth my evening.
This book is completely different than anything else that I have read. It is fast paced (accentuated by the many very short chapters—Book 1—The Call has 106 of them: Book 2 The Shift is made up of 120 chapters) and the plot complicated and filled with many different characters—most of them terrifying. It is a story of good and evil, betrayal and shocking violence, espionage and terrorism, a struggle for dominance on earth and as well as in a parallel plane where, Kudamun, a civilization of old, protects the universe. It also reveals a love that has lasted through the ages—from long in the past, to the present. The Call immediately introduces the reader to Sam and Ellie Noor. They are two busy people, whose jobs take them in different directions, but they are madly in love. One morning Ellie experiences something that affects her physically and emotionally-something that she doesn’t understand, can’t explain—something that terrifies her. Her gut wrenching screams fill Sam with terror, and he comes running into the room, alert and ready to protect her. The brief interlude of that morning changes their lives. Ellie is stunned to learn that Sam has lied to her about everything that he does and is. Can she trust him? Yes, they love each other, but can she accept the deception, the danger—will she ever feel safe and secure again? This occurrence triggers a series of incidences that throw her into a world of danger that she has no idea exists. The Shift pits Sam’s allegiance to the people he works for against his love for Ellie. He is faced with betrayal from the highest level, and Ellie is used as a pawn by his enemies. Torture and violence reveals an aspect of Ellie that he has never seen, one that confounds reality. When she is trapped, and facing a brutal death, Ellie is shifted into the world of Kudamun. There she learns that SHE is not who she has always believed she was. She is part of a master plan that has spanned the ages and she is destined to be the earths Protector. Powers that are unimaginable are awakened by Aby-od, the ruler of the kingdom. Ellie is filled with old wisdom; she understands that people's lives and destinies are pre-defined and cannot be changed. As she leaves Kudaman, she understands that she and Sam will be separated forever after she finishes her task. It tears her heart, but she also knows that she must accept it. She has many questions, but she has little time to save Earth, as it shifts into a level of darkness and evil that will cause it to be destroyed, and so she leaves to fulfill her destiny.
Michelle Medhat has an incredible imagination and she produced an extra-ordinary tale. This is a book worthy of a movie. I belong to a group that promotes a book each week, but there is no obligation to buy it or review it. To be honest, if it hadn’t been for that promotion, I probably wouldn’t have gotten this book—but I am SO glad that I did. I enjoyed it immensely!
I enjoyed this fast-paced read, the combination of Books 1 and 2. Sam Noor, working with M16, and his wife Ellie are an intriguing couple, up to their necks in trying to stop Dr. Salim Al Douri and his powerful terrorist organization, Al Nadir. That the story includes the president of the U.S., the Brit PM, and their assorted inner circles working to uncover the secrets of Nano technology, only adds to the international flavor of this thriller. Then throw in another world of powerful beings, who watch carefully as the earth shifts its balance toward the side of evil, with the supreme ability to either save or destroy the planet at the press of a few buttons. Medhat does a fine job weaving a rousing story about greed, power, good and evil, treachery, and ultimately love. It’s one of those action-packed books, full of twists and turns that I couldn’t put down.
Michelle Medhat is a gifted writer. I thoroughly enjoyed Connected: The Call & The Shift and recommend it to all. I'm looking forward to the possibility to read more of her adventures. What I want to say could be a spoiler, so let me finish with an assurance: You won't be disappointed.
