Three Words That Describe This Book: cinematic, slasher w/ folk horror roots, duology
I reviewed the first book in this duo logy and LOVED it -- Summer Fun Massacre: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
What I loved it about was the new perspective on the typical slasher-- having the normally bubbling police office who hinders rather than helps be the hero, the one who believes the final girl and fights like hell to stop the monster. I also loved the Hungry Hare, a true folk horror monster.
However, this time, while I enjoyed the conclusion, it did not feel it was as strong. First, I know this was always marketed as a duology but I think if the author allowed for a trilogy the second book wouldn't feel as rushed. And that made the ride to the conclusion less satisfying. But the conclusion itself was good.
Also there was a lot of time spent recapping what happened int he first book and the story behind the Hungry Hare that happened in the first book. The recaps at the beginning were great but there was a lot of repetition. With only 2 books to complete the story, there needs to be time to let the readers do some of the work.
Finally, the rushing also led to the time frame for the Hungry Hare's return -- historically over generations as every 10 years to be sped up to 3-- with never really a reason given. I didn't love that. The spacing could have been ten years here, easily. I understand why it would be a different book and the character development and some of the resolutions wouldn't make sense the way they are so then we need a better reason as to why the Hungry Hare was back so soon.
Here is what I did still really enjoy-- Keeping Tom the now Sheriff as a POV from the first book and then adding in Laura our finals girl from last time as she is a deputy only until the Hungry Hare issue is resolved. And this point which I liked- their dual perspectives and what they have learned about thmelseves and how they have grown in three years was great and would not make sense if there was a 10 year break.
The pace and action is faster here. The Hungry Hare attacks multiple times in this book and kills A LOT of people. The stakes are raised, the danger more palpable, and the terror more immersive. I think it might have been too much.
But also, it means people finally start to believe what Tom spent so long researching in the first book -- that the Hungry Hare is real, he is a ghoul, he is undead but he is also tightly connected to the community. That back story was great. And the fact that this slasher is 100% supernatural based, that the story as to why the Hungry Hare stalks and kills has an emotional connection to the town and who he targets, etc.... all of that makes this better-- in my opinion than a human killer with a vendetta.
The conclusion here is emotional and honest. Not everyone survives and no one is left unscathed. I did appreciate that.
This is a slasher for fans of I was a Teenaged Slasher by SGJ. Books like that which understand that the best slahers don't make sense without some supernatural. But ones that also have 360 degrees of emotional connection, for the victims, the town, and the killer.
And it is a Folk Horror for people who like Jennifer McMahon's Stay Buried. There is town history, great characters, lots of emotions, and some supernatural.
Over all this duloagy is with your time. Read them close together because as 1 book it works better.

I ADORED this! I think it even outshone Summer Fun a bit, and I loved getting back to all the characters. Get ready for a crazy ride with this one. The Hungry Hare is back and he’s pissed! I felt like this one was more gory but still dealt with the characters trauma and pain masterfully. The ending was a little shocking but I definitely understood it. I’ll be sad to let these characters go. By far, some of my favorite works by this author. I’d give more stars if I could. If you love a supernatural slasher DO NOT MISS THIS. Coming November 2026, although the first part (the summer fun massacre) is out now.

Just a few months earlier this year I ripped through the first book in this duology - The Summer Fun Massacre - and loved it, though I did note that I was slightly annoyed that Summer Fun was marketed more of being book one of two and that book one was going to end on such a massive cliffhanger.
Well, I didn't have to wait long for that cliffhanger to be... uh... uncliffed?
The second book of the two is getting launched down our throats just in time for the snow to arrive, unless you live where Craig lives and the snow should be arriving by the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend!
'The Yule Day Slaughter' is a book you can't go into without having read the first one. And because of that, if you've not read the first one, this review will be rife with spoilers from book one. Sorry! So, HALT. YE SHALL NOT PASS HERE (unless you've read the first one). And don't worry, this review will be spoiler free for book two!
What I liked: SERIOUSLY. If you've not read book one, turn back now. Last warning!
The book picks up a three years after the events of the first. Tom's taken the vacated role that Buddy Jackson had, now the new sheriff and Laura, the teenager who he saved from book one in the Hungry Hare massacre, is now a police officer, though she's dealing with PTSD and not sure how to manage it. She fills the darkness with alcohol and strangers. Life's found a balance. Until that balance is tipped. Winter is coming, festivities are planned and all seems well until the killings begin.
Tom at first doesn't suspect it can be the Hare, though Laura knows its them. The ghoul's returned, far sooner than the previous time between prior massacres.
Because a prominent family in town was slaughtered, all but one, Tom calls in The Texas Rangers to help and this adds another layer to the novel. One thing Craig's deftly done is create a full, broken picture of Tom. He's struggling to hold on and do what's right for the town, even when inside he's breaking. And when he makes an unlikely love connection, it makes things even harder for him to compile what must be done versus what he wants to do.
One thing I really loved about this novel is that it feels like DiLouie manages to fit 1000 pages of story into it. We get a lot of characters coming and going but none of them feel glossed over or simply there to die. Laura grows throughout the book, gaining strength and courage, even more than she had coming into this one, and really becomes her own person. Tom's character is effectively beat down and him partnering with a key Texas Ranger worked really well to highlight his physical disintegration but also his mental focus on completely the job.
The ending was a lot of fun and the setting Craig chose for us readers was phenomenally cinematic. I think a lot of readers are going to be giddy when they get the final scenes and see what he's done here.
What I didn't like: I think the only thing that I struggled with - and this is probably because I'm getting older and I struggle to accurately figure out how old teenagers are - was the transformation of Laura from book one to book two. I had a vision of her being mid-teens last book, though she was older, so at the beginning I grappled with her transition to now being a police officer. Again, that's on me.
Why you should buy this: Rarely does the second book in a two book series (Will there be a third? We'll see!) elevate the events in the first book while also actively increasing the lore and smashing the readers expectations, but this one absolutely does that. DiLouie's world within this book, and the first, felt real. Felt familiar. And he made us know these characters which aided in delivering emotional wallops when different folks died. This book was far more cinematic than I expected and its atmosphere and delivery reminded me a lot of Craig's exceptional 'One Of Us' novel.
A folklore slasher with plenty of blood and heart, I suspect this book will become a holiday horror classic over the next decade or so. Until then, it should prominently feature on many bookstagram and booktok accounts as the leaves turn and the snow falls.

I LOVED the first book in this series and was so excited to read this second installation. Summer camp slashers and Christmas slashers are my fave. We see the return of the hungry hare in this book and he slaughters again. Will Tom Bailey and Deputy Laura be able to stop a supernatural killer?? I know I couldn’t wait to find out!

DiLouie does it again with Yule Day Slaughter.
As in his previous book, Summer Fun Massacre, we see murder and mayhem vicariously through the eyes of a small town sheriff's department. The Hungry Hare is back and he's still hungry for human flesh and revenge.
I won't go into details about this book, or its predecessor, in an effort to not spoil either for future readers. What I will say is that the second book, in my opinion, is better than the first. While we still have the sheriff's department at a stalemate with supernatural horror, we lose the politics and pick up a fair amount of backstory about the Hare's origin. Which I appreciated because we all love something juicy we can sink our teeth into.
Is there blood? Is there gore? Sure. It's a slasher. But not as much as you would expect. It's there without actually having the heads thrown in your face. (Well, maybe a couple of times, but that's picking nits.) It's not gross-out fiction, is what I'm trying to say. The imagery is excellent. The writing grabs you by the shirt front and drags you, kicking and screaming, into the story even when we don't really want to go where we're being taken.
A solid win for DiLouie. I enjoyed the book immensely.

The Yule Day Slaughter is fast-paced, brutal, and absolutely gory read, pulling you right back into the Hungry Hare's world where he's set his sights on the entire town of Ledger. The story pulls us deeper into the legend behind the ghoul, revealing the dark history behind the local folklore the town has known for generations.
The whole book was wild from beginning to end and didn't let up. The kills were vicious, unpredictable, and unhinged. The previous rules went straight out the window and I was completely hooked. Tom Baily was determined to put an end to the Hungry Hare once and for all (even if it kills him); watching him piece everything together while trying to stop the killings made for one hell of a wild ride. I flew through this one in two days because I genuinely couldn't put it down.
There isn't really much more to say without giving away spoilers, but I will say this sequel definitely delivers! It brings the story full circle and you won't be disappointed. Craig DiLouie absolutely nailed it!

Christmas has officially been ruined.
There’s something wonderfully messed up about taking the holiday season—one of the most comforting times of year—and dropping the Hungry Hare right into the middle of it.
What caught me most was the idea that Sheriff Tom Bailey has spent three years waiting for the monster to return. Then a family is found slaughtered, and the crime scene looks exactly like something the town hoped it had left behind. That setup alone had me thinking, “Oh no… not again.”
Bringing Laura Turner back into the story is also a great choice. As the only survivor of the Summer Fun massacre, she isn't just another character hunting a killer—she knows exactly what they're dealing with. That makes the confrontation with the Hare feel much more personal.
And I love the twisted simplicity of the threat: the Hungry Hare isn't finished. It came back for revenge, and this time nobody is safe.
For anyone who enjoys slashers with relentless killers, dark holiday settings, and that “something terrible is coming” feeling, this sounds like exactly the kind of Christmas story you probably shouldn't read alone at night.

I haven't read The Summer Fun Massacre yet, but after finishing this book, I'm definitely going back to read it.
This was a fun and creepy horror read that kept me hooked from start to finish. The Hungry Hare is genuinely unsettling, and every time it showed up I was freaked out. The story had a good mix of slasher horror, suspense, and action, and it never felt boring. The small-town setting and winter atmosphere added a lot to the creepy vibe.
Even though this is a sequel, I was still able to follow along and enjoy the story. The ending had me turning pages as fast as I could to see how everything would play out.
If you like slashers, creepy monsters, small-town horror, and books that keep you on edge, I definitely recommend this one. And now I need to go back and read The Summer Fun Massacre!

This was such a gore filled, kill after kill sequel that didn’t have a dull moment. I was on edge the whole time and the development of the story from the first one was very well built. It allowed growth and more story for the characters. You get a bigger picture of the curse and what it’s really about as well as who the killer really is. The ending had me crying, and I think it was the best outcome it could’ve had. I enjoyed this series a lot and I would definitely recommend it, especially if you’re into folk horror and slashers.

Similar to the first novel this is beautifully written with some segments that really get under your skin. Different from the first novel, this one reads much more like a conventional slasher (despite the high quality writing being far above what you'd normally see in a slasher).
Contemplative, tragic, and full of broken people trying to do their best. A great sequel and truly one of my favourite reading experiences of the year!

I enjoyed this book more than Summer Fun Massacre. I really liked the bond between Laura and Tom after the previous book and what all they both have gone through. Tom’s character was written exceptionally well.
I liked how this one is called Yule Day Slaughter and the killings take place in and around Christmas time. With Summer Fun we got the tale end of the murders and I wanted to have that campy feeling with it.

this may be due to the fact it’s summer and that’s all I want to consume and think about but this one really didn’t work for me. I think the summer one was a fun slasher that didn’t require much thought as I read it. I didn’t find this one as fun and I was as invested in the horror elements. I found character development lacking as well.

So excited to get this sequel of The Summer Fun Massacre. Another great slasher with an incredible atmosphere of tension, horror and fantastic campy nostalgia! Enjoyed revisiting the characters and their continued battle with the Hungry Hare. Did not want it to end. Hoping the author comes up with something similar, as I will be first in line to read. I enjoyed this book. The Slasher Season books were not what I was expecting but overall they were highly entertaining with a supernatural twists. It gave you all of the 90s slasher feels and this book made you really love the sherriff and was an easy read that did get creepy at times. It was a perfect ending to the slasher season books and I would recommend them!!! Received an ARC copy from NetGalley.

I loved this book! It was definitely like no other Holiday Slasher Book I’ve read and I really appreciated that! A little horror mixed with some out of this world being. There was lots of deaths and tragedies which I enjoyed. The character storylines were built up perfectly and kept me intrigued with their lives and what was going to happen. I like this one a lot more than the first. It felt more fast paced, and had more exciting elements to it. It also gave final girl vibes with luara coming back as a deputy. Would definitely recommend the other horror fans

Wow this was so much fun to read! I absolutely adored this! The storyline was so good, characters interesting and the gore was 10/10. Horror slashers are some of my favorite reads and this hit every mark for me. The twists are excellent and I devoured this book so easily and quickly. This author is now hot on my horror list after this read. A great supernatural horror!
