Seeking Solace is a collection of sixty poems that span a variety of topics and touch on universal aspects of modern life, from nature and war to friendship, love and grief, with many others in between.
From the very air we breathe to the wholly make-believe, regardless of whether inspiration has come from the world around us or the most whimsical of dreams, the one common thread that unites them all is a desire to create poetry that is both approachable and relatable.
Based in Scotland, Callum McLaughlin is a writer of words, a reader of books, and a lover of cats. He operates on a freelance basis, producing content for blogs, websites, and magazines. His fiction and poetry have also been featured in several literary journals, both online and in print.
I adore this collection of poetry by Callum McLaughlin. It is the kind of book you can refer to time and time again, and though I have my favourites, each poem is powerful in its own way. They are all inspirational, and I love the fact I can open the collection to any page and be drawn in by the elegance of the words. There is no doubt Callum has a gift. It is evident in the powerful imagery, the musicality and the rhythm. Poems like 'Introspection', where each line speaks to the heart. Then there are the those which form a special connection, like 'Just for You' or 'Light Bringer.' One of my favourites, 'Remember,' contains a strength and hope which lifts the sprit .
Other works force you to reflect and are powerful representations of the society in which we live - great poems such as 'Marionette' and 'Grand Cosmos'. Similarly there are pieces which show us what we are capable of, like 'Rise'. The poem 'Shine' is a glorious portrayal of the strength and beauty within.
As is evident, the power of this collection lies within the heart of each poem; they are relatable, connecting us through words. Examples of this can be found in 'War' and 'Goodbye' - both blew me away, so powerful they had me in tears.
I highly recommend the collection. It will make a perfect addition to any bookshelf and is handy enough to carry around so it is always on hand!
After just ending my read on Seeking Solace, all I can say is wow and smile, completely fulfilled. I thoroughly enjoyed this compilation of poetry by Callum. He's so talented! His gift of word through poetry moves across your mind in song with an emotion that gives you pause for reflection of what was just read. I've always enjoyed his poetry via his blog, but this buy was well worth the money. Expertly crafted, he certainly has a poetic future ahead of him.
Some of my personal favorites where: Marionette War Vespertine Heart Goodbye The Seasons Teardrop
Seriously I could go on and on listing more. I've highlighted and noted so many poems and brilliant lines written from Seeking Solace, in my Kindle version it was hard to choose. Enjoy it and soak it in - poetry worth having in your collection. Seriously - I'm a tough bird to give 5 stars and it was worth it!!
The Good The poems in this book were poignant and rich with emotion. They flowed nicely into one another and when I got to the one for with the entire collection is named, it was... Well it was interesting to find the emotions that poem evoked...
The Bad Thanks to the style of the poems and the formatting ebooks make based on the size of the device you're using, some of the lines seemed to run into one another, but this is more a note based on personal observation rather than the poetry itself. I really found few faults in the poetry. Poetry is a rather personal thing.
The Review I'm not a huge fan of poetry, and do not understand it most of the time. For some of the poems within this collection, the same was true. Still, I was able to read and enjoy most of the poetry because it was relateable.
A lovely, lyrical book, filled with musical language that lifts the heart and opens the eye. My favorites include Light Bringer, Rise, Will You, and Annual. I lean toward the uplifting aspects of these, though there is a lot to be said for the impact of some of the darker lines. A wonderful collection that I'll be reading again and again, I'm sure. And I'm looking forward to more from this poet, who puts his soul out there for all to see.
Really really good poetry that will make you feel all we were made to feel: a complete collection of emotions: pain, love, joy, hate, disgust, anxiety, lost—and through it all hope even amongst the hopelessness, amongst “a world full of shadows” (“Salvation”).
Some of my favorites: “War”; “Society”; and the perfection of simplicity of “Teardrop”.
